Great review. I'm in the same place right now. I currently have a 2019 Tacoma. I have 3 kids and the midsized just isn't cutting it anymore. I don't like the 2019 generation. I absolutely love the 2016-2018 generation. Looking at at 2018 LT Z71 right now that's listed at $32k with around 35,000 miles on it. I was hesitant about the 6th seat center console, but after seeing it in your truck and realizing the 3 kids can sit in the back with the wife and dog up front, I think the functionality of it is great. I can' wait to pull the trigger on one. Thank you.

My 2000 Silverado had the buckets seats, and after getting the flip up center seat in this truck I don’t every want to go back. We have used the center seat in a pinch a several times for 6 people on short trips. I like having both the upper and lower storage it offers, and it still has 3 cup holders. For long trips my legs feel less crowed with the center floor section open. It is also nice to have the open floor space for a small cooler or the wife’s pumpkin pie on the way to Thanksgiving!

Andy Morton I love the double storage feature. That’s awesome. I have 3 kids and a dog so the times I have the whole family, the dog can sit up front. I used to think I wanted the full front center console, but I couldn’t agree more. I want the flip up console.

The truck has been good. I just past 36,000 miles on it, so my bumper to bumper warranty has now expired. I had one minor warranty repair that was done just before the warranty expired, and that was to replace the HVAC control panel, due to a burned out backlight bulb on the A/C. Not something that I would have even messed with replacing if it was out of warranty.

Great video, I've been researching trucks for months. I quickly dismissed Toyota and Nissan (low inventory in PA, too sporty, higher mileage held higher pricing) Fords are the new grocery getter in my opinion, somewhat complex and bulky motors/tight engine bay, RAM is a little flashy in and out but still nice and nicely priced. Chevy represents work to me, practical design, simple interior, legendary reliability and motors. "Like a rock"

After putting spacers and the suspension (leveling kit) and getting an alignment afterwards. Would that be enough to prevent issues on the long run? Lots of people tell me that even after alignment it will damage prematurely components of the truck. Any advice?
@andymorton17376 ай бұрын
I think it has a lot to do with the height of the leveling kit used. A lot of trucks are running 2.5”-3” leveling spacers, since that is what it takes to make the truck level when empty. My truck only has a 1.5” spacer. I did that for 2 reasons: 1) to minimize the strain on the suspension, 2) I like to be able to haul stuff in my bead without it look like the truck is being squared. Any spacer is likely going to had some strain and wear to the suspension, but I’m looking as my suspension, I don’t feel that the 1.5” spacer is cause the angles to be too far out of spec, and I have had no issues to this point.

It's been 4 years almost 5. Do you still own the truck? Did you get another Chevy or some other brand?
@andymorton17379 ай бұрын
I still have the truck. I need to do an update video on it. But the short answer is that it just turned 80,000 miles and no issues to report (knocks on wood). I just dropped the transmission pan this past weekend to change fluid and filter. With all of the transmission issues I hear about I was expecting a lot of metal in the pan, but was happy to see that it was really clean. I did install a sure-cool by-pass valve for the trans cooler while I was doing the fluid change and that has made the trans temp run about 30-40 degrees cooler. I did buy a new 2024 Chevy 2500HD (will need to do a video on it as well) that is my daily work truck, so the 2018 1500 is going to hang around at this point for weekend/trip duties, so the mileage will probably slow down on it.

@andymorton17375 жыл бұрын
So far no mechanical issues with the truck at 9000 miles. Just finished a 1700 mile road trip to Colorado for a ski trip, snowed off and on the entire time we were there so I got to use the 4 wheel drive probably more than I will in the next year in Texas. There have been no complaints from the back seat passengers about the lack of air. There are actually air ducts under both the front seats that put air into the floorboard of the rear passengers, as long as the air is set to go to the foot setting. The wife’s Equinox is the same way, so we just always make sure we have the air set to a setting that mixes on the floor vents as well.

Android auto is all you need for navigation. Nice review, saw you on TFL great job. Did you consider a f150 or ram?
@andymorton17375 жыл бұрын
I do use the Apple car play feature, I just don’t like that it is dependent on having cell signal for the maps to work. It was not a deal breaker for me but would have preferred that the truck had nav. If you look in the back ground in a couple of the shots you can see the 2018 Ram company truck that is my daily driver. It is a good truck that I should do a review on soon, but I didn’t see the need for two Rams in the driveway so that kind of ruled that out. I did look at the Ford F-150 with the STX package and the 5.0, I liked the truck but just preferred both the interior and exterior design of the chevy, so that is the direction I ended up going.

@commonsenserulesall95005 жыл бұрын
@@campbell0162 I call BS on not costing much more. To get a similar package truck you are looking at around a 10k price difference. 2011 Lt ext cab in 2011 was around 35-36k with the all star package. That same truck now is 44-46k. Now unless you are comparing two different trims then your statement may be true as you can get a 2019 silverado with similar features to a 2011 (upgraded to 2019 standards) and only be spending about 4-6k more.

@@commonsenserulesall9500 well his truck is a base model Cheyenne Edition with a chrome package and side steps, but other than that it's pretty base as you can get. It's also a crew cab, and the new 2019 Sierra limited and Silverado LD are double cabs, so that affects the price substantially

I don't know where the false narrative of the 5.7 hemi will run circles around the Silverado. The 2018 4x4 RAM does 0-60 in 7 seconds. The quarter mile times are also near identical.
@andymorton17374 жыл бұрын
I have not drag raced the two trucks, but I do drive both of them daily and I can tell you that the 5.7 hemi and the 8 speed have a much stronger seat of the pants feeling than the 5.3 with the 6 speed. The Hemi has 40 more Horsepower and 2 more gears so it really isn’t that surprising.

I traded my 16 Denali for the 2018 Z71...The 8 speed transmission on the Denali would on occasion make a loud clunking sound as if it was unsure what gear to it should be in...I would start out in the morning with the tow button on and that helped...I agree with you the six speed transmission paired with the 5.3 is the way to go...Great review...This truck has everything I need and I like the looks of it. In my opinion the Range device may extend the life of the factory lifters in some cases, but at the end of the day unless the lifters themselves are replaced with non AFM/DOD lifters (which I believe requires changing more than just the lifters to make it work) then they are probably going to fail at some point.

I will try to do an update video soon, to discuss my one year opinions on the truck. I now have about 17,000 miles on the truck (not huge miles as I only drive it on trips and weekends). So, far the only issue that I have had was with the annoying Active Fuel Management. In March of 2019 I purchased a Range + AFM eliminator and it has corrected my drive ability issues with the truck now that it stays in V8 mode at all times. Another nice side affect of staying in V8 at all times has been about a 1 mpg increase in fuel economy. My overall average has improved from 17 mpg to 18 mpg since installing the Range + module. The truck served the family well this year on approx. 6000 miles worth of road trips.

I’m planning on buying a 2017 1500 z71 with 24k miles & with all the videos I’ve seen im planning on buying the range technology module beforehand so I can pop it right in when I leave the dealership. But I’ve also seen people say to get a thermal bypass aswell? so then the truck can run good and will last how it should
@andymorton173710 ай бұрын
@@jrgyy3681 I am currently at 80K, and knock on wood this truck has never been to the shop for anything. I have had the range module on since about 10K, and I fully recommend it. I have not done the thermal bypass on the transmission, but my transmission stays 190 degrees or less, and I don't tow anything with this truck. All that being said, I expect that I will have transmission and lifter issues at some point if I keep the truck.
@jrgyy368110 ай бұрын
@@andymorton1737 any idea what causes the lifter and trans issues? I picked up the truck and love it so far. Also got a warranty that’s good till the trucks at about 110k good for the engine, transmission, and what the dealer man said everything so I’m not really worried

I got the same truck last week in white, practically the same deal/price. Found a dealer with 12 leftover 2018’s here in SC. I feel the same thing when mine transitions from 4 to 8cyl. Other than that, it’s a great truck. Coming out of a 250 I had for 14yrs the ride quality is very nice. Good job on video.

Two Cookin and Two Lookin what dealer in sc?
@scoffroad5 жыл бұрын
Stivers Chevrolet in Columbia. They are giving direct supplier discounts on top of all rebates. My 2018 LT was one of two that had heated leather seats, power slide rear glass. Internet price was $36,226. With taxes, tags, etc it came out to $37,580. I had sold a F250 back in Dec and was waiting to find a truck under $40k. All the F150 I found were$40-41k. This was too good to pass up.

I ended up getting the Range AFM elimination module, V8 mode all the time and drivability is much better.

I’m interested in getting one. Andy Morton Is that warranty friendly?
@andymorton17375 жыл бұрын
It stays plugged into the ODB2 port. I am told that if you unplug it before you take it to the dealer that they will never see that it was installed. It doesn’t change anything except keeping the truck in V8 all the time. Best $189 I spent on the truck.

Whats better in gas your Z71 or your Ram w the hemi?
@andymorton173711 ай бұрын
Comparing the 2018 Ram 5.7 Hemi vs. the 2018 Chevy 5.3, the Ram on paper had more power, which you could feel and the fuel economy was typically 1-2 mpg better. One thing to keep in mind was that the Ram was (no longer have) 4x2 and the Chevy is 4x4, so that could be the 1-2 mpg difference between the two. Also, the Ram had a low front air dam, where I had leveled and removed the smaller front air dam extension on the Chevy. So, in reality stock for stock on similarly equipped trucks I would expect the fuel economy to be about the same.
@IrishNew11 ай бұрын
@@andymorton1737 the 5.7 requires mid grade gas. The 5.3 requires regular 87. The dodge is heavier than the GMC so should get worse mpg. Hmmm…thanks for your input bro.

Does the leveling kit mess with the ride
@andymorton17375 жыл бұрын
The 1.5” leveling kit did not noticeable change the ride/drivability of the truck. One of the reasons I went with the 1.5” vs. the more popular 2.5” was my concerns about changing the factory ride.

My 2019 Colorado Z71 has been awesome and I still absolutely love it, but the interior is just too tight for a family. My daughter’s rear facing car seat doesn’t fit behind me or I wouldn’t be able to drive it, and with it behind the passenger seat, anyone who sits over there has their knees in the glove box. So your choice in the Silverado was definitely the right one, as here I am shopping full size trucks.
@andymorton17372 жыл бұрын
I actually was really interested in the Colorado, so I drove the Silverado and the Colorado back to back on the day I purchased this truck, and obviously you can see the direction that I went. While the driving and parking of the Colorado was nice, the cab and bed space was just too small for my needs.

DFM is far better then the AFM system. Never noticed it cutting cylinders once.
@andymorton17374 жыл бұрын
I have wondered since they came out with the DFM if part of the reason was to improve on the downfalls of AFM. In my opinion there are definite drivability issues with the AFM, as well as some lifter failures that I have heard of. Knock on wood mine has been great at now 30K miles, since the AFM on mine is disabled.

Great review. If you were towing a mid sized rv, would you go with the Silverado or the Dodge?
@andymorton17372 жыл бұрын
I still have the 2018 Silverado and 2018 Ram both in the driveway, and I have to admit that I have not towed with either of them, but my feeling is that the Hemi with the 8 speed would definitely out pull the Silverado up the hill, but not really sure on which would actually handle the trailer better.

I heard the transmission on this truck was slipping? Has it happen to you if so, have you fixed it?
@andymorton17374 жыл бұрын
I have not had any transmission slippage issues with mine, but I have not towed with it at all and it only has 19,000 miles on it. Only issue I had was with the Torque Converter constantly locking and unlocking when it was going from V4 to V8 mode. That was corrected with a Range AFM module and now that it is V8 all the time it drives fine, added bonus to V8 all the time is a 1 mpg improvement in fuel economy, which I attribute to the truck being able to just run in 6th gear all the time without all the shifting back and forth. Before the V4 delete the tachometer was constantly moving up and down 300-400 rpm literally every time I made any movement of my foot on the gas pedal. There is no way that is good for the fuel economy.

I have thought about doing an update video, but fortunately at this point I don’t really have much exciting to say about the truck, other than it has been trouble free for 55,000 miles, and I still enjoy driving it just as much today, as the day I brought it home. I did get some of the “Chevy Shake” that some talk about, but a re-torqued my rear axle u-bolts and it immediately went away. They were surprisingly loose in my opinion.

Is this a double cab or crew cab? It was hard to tell when you were filming the back area. I know the crew cab has more rear legroom than the double cab. Thanks for the video. Loved it, and it gave a good insight about the truck.
@andymorton17375 жыл бұрын
This truck is the crew cab. I am 6 foot and in the crew cab I can sit behind the drivers seat in the position that I drive and have a couple of inches between my knees and the seat back. I tried a double cab and I could not sit behind myself with the driver seat in a comfortable position for me to drive. The double cab is great for hauling kids, or just for extra stuff, but if you plan to regularly haul adults in the back I would go for the crew cab.

how's that bed cover holding up? I was thinking of getting the retrax, but from the looks of your video your roll up cover doesn't appear to have the clumsy box up front that eats up bed space.

Unfortunately, I can’t recommend the bedcover. The vinyl is cracking across the entire cover and pealing back on the edges as well. It is 2 years old with a 3 year warranty so I will see if I am able to get any help with it from Bak.

@@andymorton1737 Thanks! Guess I'm going back with the retrax. I had the polymer one on my 06 Sierra and it lasted great without leaks till I sold the truck in 2018 when i bought my new truck. My tuck always sits outside as both of them are too long to go in the garage.
