You guys need to start looking at long term reliability and running cost. Nobody owns a ute/bakkie just for 3 days. Here in South Africa most of them don't even make 100k km without having problems.

Lots of 2.0 liter Amaroks here have over 200 000 kms, with very little problems, and the 3.0 V6 has proven itself in other VW's and Audi's. If you maintain it well enough it is very reliable, the 3.0 Isuzu has proven it can easily go to 300 000 kms and beyond. The 3.2 Rangers does seem to have a few problems though. The new Hilux and Triton is still unproven since they are only a year or 2 old.

First of all,there Ute are tough. If you use it more often with family go Nissan . It’s the most suv like. If you use it to its death,go damx.Proven engine proven gearbox. If you use it to work and little bit of family, go Hilux. If you use it to catch eyeball,and the power it deliver but will sell it after it’s warranty go ford ranger. If you like the power of ranger ,but worried about the small issues. Go Mazda (not a fan of zoom zoom face) If you have budge issue go triton.super select 4wd is great by the way. If you use it for ……… No ,no Holden.

Interesting test. I tried the most. My No. 1 is still Amarok. Amazing engine and gear! 100% climb performance @full load! No rear Airbags - okay that is not good. But remember Amarok is certified for max 100 kg roofweight at a high speed - others have max.50-80 kg @ lower speeds. So you get an optional airbag in the rear, but your roof could be crushed much easier...Amarok is rocksolid. Pricetag... I ordered the V 6 with 204 hp with auto and many nice add-ons like rear diff.lock, etc. and I bought it from a german dealer brandnew for 42.400.- Euros. Okay you have to wait for about four months...😊 Thanks guys! Frank

You need to actually drive one first in the same conditions. Find muddy road, Engage 4H in your triton, find a sharp bend, turn without doing a three point turn. Now do that in a Hilux or a Ranger

A point not mentioned in the test on the Amarok is that the engine is torque limited to only 200Nm in reverse gear to protect its transmission from failure. A very important point for people who intend to tow the maximum rated load or drive in deep sand. The vehicle is able to reach the stall point of the converter and refuse to reverse. I had to tow a friend out of sand on Fraser Island when he got bogged going forward and then couldn make the wheels turn in reverse. Short of an un-warrented ECU remap, there is no VW 'cure' for the issue.

do you know the restrictions on the transmitions of the other brands tested.... geeeez car manufactures commonly do this to protect there gearbox. i think you nees to write a letter to ZF (the best gear box manufacturer in the world. used by all of the top performance car manufacturers for heavy duty off road use.) and tell them you would like to replace there head technical engineer. because you know better.......🤔

Rick Albest Ha ha ha. You're hilarious. I'm not the one offering a 4wd that is incapable of reversing in soft sand or backing a boat up a sloping driveway. All the other brands in the test above can do this with ease. VWs choice of transmission supplier and lack of low range leaves them out of the race as a tow vehicle or serious 4wd tourer. Fantastic to make 550Nm, but that will take you places going forwards that 200,Nm can not come back from in reverse. Think about that before jumping on the keyboard.

Here's my ranking: 1. Nissan Navara, maybe I'm biased because I bought one, but it was excellent value for money and comfortable. Rear room was very cosy for my family. 2. Toyota Hilux, bold reliability, bold design, bold reputation, but boring interior design. Very tough it cannot go wrong. 3. Mitsubishi Triton, GREAT value for money, but design can be ugly depending on how you spec your ute/pickup. 4. Volkswagen Amarok, solid German feel, very road friendly, but very fragile and delicate. If something goes wrong, prepare to pay a fortune repairing it. 5. Holden... lost identity, badge and character doesn't say much, but nice design. 6. Isuzu D max... basic, but gets the work done. Many gardeners fancy them. 7. Mazda BT, it's a Ranger. 8. Ford Ranger... unreliable, bad dealers, bad customer service, excuse me but I had a horrible experience with Ford... avoid them

I bought a new Nissan Navara here in Belgium, and I love it! Great kit and gears on board, plus great deal, and vast choice of Nissan dealers. The other pickups are rather scarce. Although the Toyota Hilux and VW Amarok are just as amazing, the Hilux is not as cosy as the Navara and there aren't many available dealers. Whilst the Amarok boasts strong presence in Belgium, it's not at truck-like or rugged feel as the Navara. Looks like the most fragile and delicate out of the bunch. The Mitsibishi Trition (L200) is only famous wherever their dealers are, elsewhere they're not that spoken of. The Ford ranger is pretty known here in Belgium, but they're not very reliable as the Japanese rivals.

Congrats on your new Navara! Looked at a Navara Delta Edtion before i bought my current truck, but the front seats are mounted way to high! for my 196 cm body, ie. Terrible seating position.. I live in Norway and bought a 2018 Isuzu Dmax Arctic Truck AT35 back in January, very happy with it, only missing out on the adjustable steering rack... Had a 2015 Hilux d4d 3.0 sr5 Arctic Truck AT37 before and the Isuzu is much faster, and way more nible n better to drive. Where i Live, the Navara unfortunately falls through in the 2nd hand market with poor resale value..

@@bikerman6907 Thank you! Yeah I can understand that the Navara historically suffered compared to the Hilux. The previous generation Navara (2004-2014) had severe quality and reliability issues. But now I can tell the Nissan has stepped up its game with the Navara, which is why I chose it! Now the truth about the Navara is that it's built to accommodate road use. In this day and age, it's almost become a fashion to drive a pick up truck. the Navara and Ford Ranger would be best at this, although the Navara prioritizes reliability and functionality, whilst the Ranger prioritizes appeal and being big at everything (big 3.2 engine, high power, slightly bigger in every dimension, etc...).

Interesting review in australia and appreciated. I live 50% of my time in Thailand where most of them are manufactured. I needed a vehicle in Thailand for going to the supermarket; taking equipment and chemicals to the farm and going for the occasional 500 km to the seaside or Bangkok (5 of us). I was buying this pick up truck to use for at least 10 years. The Thai girlfriend that drives is only 5 ft ( 1.54m) so the driver's seat would have to be able to go up high to see out and steering column adjustment would be useful. The VW Amorac would not be contemplated in Thailand, there is 200% import tax as not manufactured in Thailand. I had heard that there had been problems with the Ford Engine; so that crossed off the Ford and Mazda (same engines). The Nissan has coil rear springs and was informed not so good for carrying weight and anyway Nissan is owned by Renault and I would never buy a French vehicle. I just don't like the appearance of the Mitsubishi Triton but swear by Mitsubishi engines having had 3 Mitsubishi vans in the UK. I actually never contemplated the Isuzu for some reason but would consider it now as simple and strong engine. Toyota have the largest network of garages in Thailand and the most popular pick up truck in Thailand. Toyota engines seem to me the strongest and most reliable. I have been in a taxi in Bangkok that had done 1 million kms. I read (and watched on TopGear) that the Toyota Hilux is indistructable. Toyota has a high second hand value; hence I bought new as couldn't justify what was being asked for a two year old vehicle. I therefore bought the Toyota Hilux Double Cab but only with the 2.4 Diesel engine and only 2 wheel drive (PreRunner) as that is the most common configuration in Thailand. I went for 6 gear manual as I always think that you have more control with manual and less problems mechanically. I have had it only eight months ( 5,000 kms) and no problems and can confirm Toyota service in Thailand is great. My choice now would be (1) Toyota Hilux, (2) Isuzu Max, (3) Ford Ranger, (4 ) Mazda.

As Isuzu Dmax ls - m 2017 owner I think it’s a great Ute, awesome one fuel 76 dollars to fill and great value for money also good room in the back seat and front seats, great engine and awesome off road. But there’s a few things I don’t like 1. The seats are hopeless on long Journeys 2. Not much after market stuff for the Ute 3. The under sling rear tire gets caught up 4. The interior is starting to fall apart in some areas 5. And sometimes it will do strange and wonderful things while driving 6.The vinyl scratching and gets chewed up easy 7. There no reach adjustment on the steering wheel 8. Interior scratches really easy. In saying this I’m just being Nit picky, it’s a really good Ute also good strong driveshafts and engine, gear box 6 speed man really cheap to run also with services,really economical to run in my opinion.

That’s good for a larger Diesel engine , and yes the manual transmissions are cheaper on fuel for sure , I have a 3.2 Mazda and it’s up there also on fuel economy but I’ve never had any of the issues that the ranger seems to have, and I’m looking forward to the upcoming Isuzu/Mazda partnership.

Good comparison video, but it really only compares the features. A big factor in deciding which Ute to buy is reliability. Join any of the Ford ranger Facebook groups and you’ll be quickly scared away. Ranger/BT50 have a concerning amount of major engine issues, some wildtrak owners only getting 20,000kms before the engine gives up. Although the Dmax didn’t score too well in this comparison, it’s the ute to buy if you actually want your $50,000 to last you some time.

Hi guys great review. Yes the Amarok dose not have rear passenger airbags but it has one safety feature that is always overlooked. It is the only Ute with constant all wheel drive. This when driving on slippery roads alone should be a major feather in its cap but is never mentioned, let alone towing in the wet.

I think all of the utes featured here can be put in to all wheel drive for wet conditions. Constant all wheel drive nearly killed me once in a Suzuki grand vitara, its bad for dry conditions in a swerve and correct situation it just grabs the road and feels like you are steering a tank out of the shit fight of a situation some else puts you in. I had ALOT of rear drive utes asses try to sneak their way up the front out of a wet corner but never ever have i felt in danger like i did that day in the Grand Vitara during optimum driving conditions, it was literally the first and only time I was shaken and left thinking "how the fuck did that happen? How the fuck am I not dead?" in a vehicle.

I Looked at two utes. hilux n dmax. ended up going with the dmax for simplicity, larger displacement 3l and proven reliable engine. like all cars has it's cons too i.e. weak paint work and cv joints. What put me off with the hilux is the issues with the dpf.

I agree and it makes this review fee a littlel like amature hour. The Ranger and the BT-50 have the same base, engine, gear box and basically share just about everything even down to being assembled in the same factory for the Asian market (Unless Australia have their own assembly plant for one or the other). The biggest differences are mostly esthetics and which dealership you feel you will get the best service with. Putting one as the top pick and the other as last only speaks volumes about their ignorance. The Hilux in terms of reliability is and resell value is great otherwise the Ranger and BT-50 are nice Utes to own and will perform great both as a daily driver and in the rough, at least if you get the bigger 3.2 L engine.

At the end of the day, they are still just a duel cab ute. None of them offer the comfort of a wagon. For the price of them, they are near the price of a Prado and I would much prefer to buy a Prado which is similar money and much more comfortable. And yes, I've had a duel cab ute before. It's just my opinion so please don't give me a hard time for my thoughts if they differ from others, thanks.

One tends to see a lot of Rangers and I think the reason for it's popularity is the fact that it looks like a proper tough truck, especially the wildtrack. Obviously it must also be a good vehicle since it wins a lot of these comparisons.. Yep, they got the styling right from the get go, unlike that hideous BT 50.

its just a joke when you can get most European diesels down as low as 5L/100km yet here we are paying for excess diesel burning for more safe emissions?? doesnt make sense if you burn less you emit less lol my last ute was the superchaged 5.0 ford coyote whilst it wasnt great in the city (avg 16L) but on the highway in stock form was getting 10L after a tune bigger wheels was close to 500rwhp and still got 8.6L yet my np300 same road struggles to get 10L with a quarter of the power and near the same weight

The problem I have with the rear seats on any ute is that they're too upright due to the lack of space in the cabin. I know firsthand there's not alot of padding in the back of the rear seats of the 7th Gen Hilux, I'm not sure if they've fixed this in the latest version.

Interesting that the Colorado lack of diff lock is always mentioned as a major failing without acknowledging has a brilliant LSD that works full time, unlike the part time diff locks. On a greasy road the LSD is much better that the single spinners.

I would also like them to take each vehicle into a dealership with a similar problem and see what after service you got. did they argue about it or fix it lend another vehicle etc

5:35 pretty much sums these guys up, the dude has a flanno on as this is what he thinks the buyer of this vehicle considers regular attire, and yet he is still clad in his obnoxious hipster hat. You might as well get the country women’s association to review these vehicles, will be much tougher and more worthy than you tarts.

i owned hilux 2.5g 2015 and hilux 2.8le 2018, no major complaints. but i like 2.5g 2015 more. direct feel of power transfer. and no reluctant feeling to dive into the bushes rich roads..

Always look at servicing costs and intervals, plus insurance, tyres, fuel tank size and also brand aftersales reputation, ie. which carmaker/dealer will look after you the best and who do you trust the most.

As they mentioned, it struggled at this price point, but it the lower models may do better. I'd pick a Colorado LS over a Ranger XLS for instance.

Arun K if you plan to do a lot of km, tow or keep the ute for a while. Stay with the Dmax, most of the others can't match the durability. It does everything you need well, just not outstanding at anything except fuel economy, reliability and durability.

Thanks gil freitas. I have heard the same comments about the DMAX in the market. Seeing them do serious mileage without any major issues. In the tough terrain here performance is exceptional.

Does anyone have any experience with any of these offroad carrying a considerable high load? I'm planning on mountaing a 700kg camper cell on the back of one for offroad touring, and have yet to find a high-load offroad comparison. My current top contender is the Ranger, for its power and load capacity + low range, but clearance isn't its best asset, as is the entry angle. Anyone with experience have any suggestions? Cheers!

Was up in the Flinders on some pretty rough tracks on the weekend. My povo pack Ranger handled the off road better than the 'Rugged X" Hilux. Who are these guys?

Have a drive out in the sticks, the only dealerships you see are toyota, holden, ford, mitsu and sometimes Isuzu. What does that tell you?

If you take to long draining your rangers engine oil or bt50 you will end up blowing your motor as the pump is not self priming which is crazy design fault in 2019 Make sure you don't drain to long or new motor and not covered under warranty if your local mechanic don't know about it

This is not a fair review. These guys are a bunch of ranger, hilux and amarok fan boys period. The Triton is a serious off roader capable of going anywhere, even further than the hilux! I've seen it already. I have a Triton and a Prado and I'm telling you that Triton goes anywhere. It's really capable even when it's stock. I've taken the previous model up a 40 degree muddy slope with deep ruts in low range with no lockers and it just walked up that slop with absolutely no problems. And the Firestone destination at tires were 60-70% worn.

at the scrap yard cos the panel beaters cant get replacement parts. If you dent them then they get written off (make sure you are fully insured).

As mentioned below. Nobody mentioned the ranger design faults. After 120k you might be back to ford for a new engine. The amarok will hurt your wallet worse off when maintenance is not kept up. The winner is the hilux. Simple yet bulletproof.

The main purpose of a Ute is that I be a work horse mainly Ye they are becoming a family Ute but they winge about the suspension being to stiff well it’s a tradies Ute champion there not going to put soft springs in them so when they have 800+ kg in the back they sit on the floor shit like this annoys me

Great review, but I do find 2 points missing about the top 2. No rear airbags in Amarok, and still the issue with the Ranger's dpf. Those reasons should knock them off the top step to be fair.

Lack of rear airbags in the Amarok is in there twice - 5:55 and 9:24 ...but the ute is so solid. To add to what someone else mentioned, 2011 onwards ANCAP rating (5 star) shows less injury for the rear occupan,t as the compartment retained it's shape. This is compared to not only the Ranger, but the Triton, HiLux and Navara (same year) which were all fitted with rear airbags! Still, just put them in there I say eh... One would hope, with close to 60K Rangers being recalled last year that they would be sure to have rectified the dpf with the 2018 models. Ditto with the Mazda BT-50. Still, I would pick the HiLux overall, but I'm totally bias after previously owning one for 15 years :)

One might have a beer or two when deciding to comment (yep, me). Rear air bag isn't an issue really when it comes down to final decision, but that bloody Ranger is still being manufactured and sold with a known (potentially fatal) fault so I don't know why it always scores so bloody high.

I own a 2016 Hilux man dual cab, and its the best by far. Ranger has to many electrical problems, tritons break in half and lack performance. Hilux has 5 star ANCAAP rating, my utes use for what its built for, and still out performs the others.

I have a 2012 Amarok, just when it was released in Jamaica and I will be getting another. It's absolutely a good bargain. They need to hurry with the rear air bags.

Having owned a few hiluxes over a decade or so, I ve come to the conclusion that the hilux is unbearably uncomfortable (extremely stiff suspension) especially for 6.5 feet plus people like myself. Practically unusable rear seats for similar sized blokes and marginally unstable than other utes whilst unladen. On the other hand, its got exceptionally high resale value, unbeatable reliability and a plethora of aftermarket parts to customise it to your liking. I'd still prefer it over a ranger though, haven't tried the amarok yet.

I live in Thailand and was looking for a Pick Up Truck. I spent hours researching which one I would buy. I did not need a 4 WD as 90% would be on tarmac roads and the other 10% on dirt tracks to the farm. I had read that the Ford engine has had problems. I did not like the design of the Mitsubishi Tritron. I did not know much about the Isuzu at the time. I was sold on Toyota due to teh reliability of Toyota engines and on the hilux from watching Top Gear where they made out they could not kill it. I opted for the Toyota Double Cab 4x2 PreRunner with the 2.4 diesel engine with 6 speed manual. I have had the pick up truck one year now and absolutely no problems. Living in Asia now, I would probably only buy a Toyota or Honda vehicle now.

I own a new v6 Amarok Highline with option of heated leather seats. Much cheaper price than the top of range ultimate and more sensible wheels and sports bar. Beautiful to drive every day. It’s replacing and combining the roles of both an Audi A4 Quattro and an older Mazda BT 50 ute. Just wish it had a few things like the rear airbags although we don’t have kids we do drive with our dog inside. Plus it could do with folding door mirrors and would love a remote lockable tray. I added a tow bar which should be standard. Plus added a lockable tray cover. Shame these are not packaged better as VW doesn’t haggle on the accessories

CarAdvice was trying to conduct a test on lifestyle Utes and had picked the 8 most popular/mainstream models. Also the Toyota would fall behind in every category except off-road compared to these Utes and as I had mentioned before, since it's a lifestyle Ute test, it would be thrashed (I believe)

That SR5 vehicle on test is pretty is early production unit I think. The new SR5's and TRD edition Hilux have a retuned suspension for better ride

It's because these women dont know how to use the 4x4 system, look at them. It takes no more than 10 seconds to be in 4LLC and max 5 seconds for 4H. Not to mention Triton offers 4H full time like Amarok but with option for 2wd. And also 4HLC!! That's pretty impressive for 10k less

Perception is different from reality. I will go pick isuzu dmax, toyota hilux or mitsubishi triton. We own a triton and 160,000 km odo and still running like new. The only parts we replace is the timing belt, fuel filter and air filter. And we got isuzu dmax 2004 model and 420,000 km odo and still running.

The tests used in the review would be a good guide for the majority of buyers that do a mix of different stuff with there utes. If you sol purpose is extreme off roading a stock high-line dual cab is not the vehicle for you. It would have been the icing on the cake if they also included some night driving and gave a score for the headlights both high and low beam and the lighting of the instruments as its hard to get a test drive at night.
