After reading the comments, I think Saudis and Australians share the same concept for Toyota Hilux, which is the top selling small size pick up truck here in Saudi Arabia. In my opinion, yes it has the least options and tech, mainly in the safety department, but it is the most reliable truck in this category with high reselling price as used truck, reasonably cheap parts and easy maintenance. When people buy a small truck, they usually focus on the practical part more than options and other stuff.

and now you will have a bad reliability and resale. Granted Ford's driving experience can't be beaten. But you arnt buying a luxury family sedan. It's a work horse. I think sales figures don't lie. Toyota H, out sells the competition here by miles. And we all know why.

+No Way Sales figures are a result of the depth of the marketing departments pockets. When common sense begins to prevail, people will begin to see that the world of Utes is passing them by. They were the best of the best and created a fantastic product which earned and deserved the King of the Hill badge but the competition has taken note and started to do something about it. Hills is simply resting on its laurels. Only 5 speed in auto and manual, are you kidding and they released this after everyone else had their new offerings out. If that is not arrogance, then I don't know what is. You talk about resale value, that one thing alone will effect the resale value drastically. Who in their right mind is going to buy a 2016 5 speed ute with less power, less torque and less towing capacity than half the other vehicles on this review, in 2 or 3 years from now. No, forget about that, who in their right mind is going to do that, NOW and then pay more for the privilege. In my humble opinion, buying one of these vehicle is going to be one of the most expensive items most people are going to buy so why not get the biggest bang for your money.
@hazz5699 жыл бұрын
+No Way The Ford ranger is the most sold vehicle in New Zealand. The Hilux is 3rd. I think we all know why. Most ute drivers today also want a comfortable experience, and many just use them as lifestyle vehicles rather than for work. Expect to see Australia follow the same trend as New Zealand. At the moment all signs point to the Ranger outselling the Hilux in Aus.

It all depends on what you need your vehicle for. I don't need to go offroading constantly or in harsh terrain. I do need a vehicle with decent ground clearance and a soft rid. Most of the time the bed is empty so I will go with a multi link suspension. Like the looks of the Nissan best over the rest of the vehicles. Chose to buy one because it fulfills my needs the best. That doesn't mean is the best truck, but it is the truck the suits my needs the best. Hope it does not come with quality and reliability issues I had with my past Navara. The last version was crap.

@jollygoodyo9 жыл бұрын
Rangers would make good trucks weekend warriors who don't push their vehicles to their limits. There's a reason why overlanders still prefer their trustworthy Toyotas. Personally, if looks were out of the picture, I would have rated the Isuzu to be the best truck of the lot. With a reliable engine and probably the nest low range torque amongst the lot, it's definitely the most practical in real world use.
@MrAkwaholic9 жыл бұрын
+marcustya88 You are Joking, right. 380Nm of torque and a 5 speed auto transmission. Its barely a middle of the pack runner. It can tow 3500kg on a braked trailer, so thats nice otherwise there are much better options available. If you think of it objectively, wouldn't you want more features, more power, more torque for the same amount of money? I know I would...
@jollygoodyo9 жыл бұрын
6 speed actually! Which is amazing. But if it breaks down in the middle of a third world country while you're on an overlanding trip, bless you. So really , depends on what you use it for. Also, you should check out Isuzu's flat torque curve and great fuel efficiency combined with it's lower weight- guarantee for a top performing truck. If you're rtruly looking for a pick up truck and not a pick up car, that is.
@MrAkwaholic9 жыл бұрын
+marcustya88 Its a good job then that Im not planning any long overland trips in third world countries. I live in a 1st world country where if anything went wrong, the roadside assistance would be there in a few hours at worst. I have seen the flat torque curve and it concerns me. It seems a little artificial to me, as if it has been restricted in some way. Maybe to ensure the inferior design of the chassis or the transmission doesn't fail under the extra torque that the power plant can produce. Don't believe the hype.
@MrAkwaholic9 жыл бұрын
+marcustya88 And on the fuel efficiency, its pushing out less power and torque so of course its going to be more fuel efficient. Also, Ive just been to the Australian and New Zealand Isuzu websites and I can't find mention of a 6 speed transmission anywhere. Please show me where it does and I will stand corrected.

Is your info coming from your heart or by doing some real research like comparing the vehicles and doing test drives and speaking to other people. Those can all shuffle down below the Bt-50 and Ranger. I think you have the Amarok in the right place but who really cares, your shortlist should only have 2 vehicles on it, right. Ford and Mazda. They are at the top of the pile at the moment. I hope the others can do something to improve.

@MrAkwaholic9 жыл бұрын
Sales figures are a representation of how successful the marketing campaigns are. Toyota has simply spent more money on advertising the Hilux over the years and thats why its number1 in sales in a lot of countries. Recently people have begun to educate themselves more before spending the big bucks on a new truck and they are starting to realise that what was once the best is not so anymore. You will see Hilux slowly slide down the rankings.

Technically you're right, there was once that distinction, but we're too lazy to think of another term for the other stuff so it's all utes now.
In the Hilux did you use power mode, because when you start it, the Hilux is automatically in standard mode which is not as responsive as power mode.
@MrAkwaholic9 жыл бұрын
+jamie clark Power mode or not, Hilux is underdone on every measurable criteria and the people are beginning to notice.
@thedescriptions66469 жыл бұрын
+Dean van der Merwe are you a Ford guy
@MrAkwaholic9 жыл бұрын
No Jamie, Im a common sense guy. I don't care what the badge is. I don't like paying more and getting less. Its that simple. Toyota is charging more money and offering less for it and the people are paying it because of the hype surrounding the reliability of Hilux. they have done a stellar job convincing you. For every story of sensational reliability with Hilux, there is one of equal reliability with Ford or Mazda or Holden Ill bet that Mitsi has them aswell as VW and the others. On the other side of the argument there are just as many Hilux owners crying about this and that going wrong as there are owners of any of the other brands. If you are having a good experience with owning your Hilux then I am happy for you. I mean that sincerely. The ute segment is very strong at the moment, it hasn't always been that way. Hilux has been the king for a long time and has built a good reputation for reliability. over the last few years the other guys have noticed and started doing something about it and they are putting up very good examples of what people want in a ute. Hilux has kinda been resting on their laurels a little and I think its going to hurt them. The thing that really surprised me about the Hilux is that they were the last ones to release their new model and they have come up short of the mark. They knew what all the others had put up. They had a great opportunity to put up the market leader and they blew it. The previous model is 10 years old so if history were to repeat, this new model has to last 10 years before the next release. Wouldn't you want to be the market leader when you are entering a new phase of life instead of somewhere down the list knowing that the others are only going to get better. Think about it objectively considering all the brands, where they are going how often they develop and put out new products and what they are actually putting out and then make up your mind. I did, and Hilux wasn't on my short list this time. I hope they do something about it because I actually like their styling over the others but that stuff is only skin deep. This time the BT50 won my money and that was only down to price. I got a much better deal from Mazda than I did from Ford and I think that was because of the current trend toward the Ranger. Their product is in more demand at the moment so they are less likely to discount it. Thats the way it goes, supply and demand but the BT-50 is the same vehicle under the hood. Thats why I don't care. I got what I need. Market leading equipment.

Secondly, the Amarok stood up if not better than other UTE's regarding front, rear and side impacts. The rear children did not bounce around or have major jolting compared to others in its class. In my view a safer UTE by far. And the children and airbag is the excuse given for the no. 2 spot?????? No mention on servicing, repair costs, part availability, warrantee, long term use and costs with real world milage...... WOW!!!! Which company paid the most money for this review then :) ?

@gregj44789 жыл бұрын
+Kenneth “Nightwatch” O'Malley Ouch, my bad. I actually meant Ford Bronco, not the Everest. Everest is a 3-row SUV sold primarily in SE Asia (I live in the Philippines) and is based on the same chassis as the Ranger. An all-new version was just released for 2016 (the previous version was ancient) and the front clip is the same as the 2016 Ranger. If you search KZbin you will undoubtedly see some reviews of it. Yes, no doubt Ford can say they are "considering it" all day long, but the proof is in the pudding. But I'm quite sure they are not going to concede the market to GM when Ford have a solid product available (Ranger) that is ready to compete (or nearly ready, pending safety and emiisions changes for the American market).

Great review, Toyota would be well advised to retire the Hilux brand in Asia (as the new model is average at best and still over the top expensive) and release the Tacoma, especially now the mining industry in Australia cant keep propping up their over all sales numbers............just a thought.

+CarAdvice.com.au Are these figures for Auto or Manual
@spydoorman75839 жыл бұрын
+CarAdvice.com.au Wow the Ranger is fast, quite surprsing considering the Holden Colorado 2.8 is supposed to be the strongest engine and the Mazda BT-50 is slower than its twin.

@@Drivecomau I don't believe that the bt50 with the exact same powertrain is 1.3 seconds slower 0-100.

Great video guys...well done. I have been a loyal Toyota fan 4 ever I am on my fourth Hilux Invicible Auto and ready to change...I never thought I would drive anything else but I cant stand the look of the new Hilux..what have they been doing at Toyota for 10 years to come up with this? Lazy? I dont like the style it is no change from the old and it is uglier...how have they managed this? I have a Ranger Wildtrak on trial for a week and from what I have heard it is so much better...never had a Ford but this just might be their time.
@ehupnowthen8 жыл бұрын
+Joel Mammachen How right you are....I have just had the Wildtrack 3.2 for a weeks trial and it breaks me to say this vehicle is far superior to the new Hilux it is a more refined engine it is a better ride it is more comfortable it is a better ride with a ton in the back it tows better pulling our 2.8 ton mini digger..it breaks my heart to move away from Hilux but that is what I have done I have ordered the new Ford Ranger Wildtrack in white with every extra available £38.700 will it be as good in 4 years? as the Hilux time will tell.

I reckon that started happening when they started building the Hilux’s in Thailand.

+sauberbeast No sponsor necessary. Its the best for a reason. If you remove emotion from your decision making process and compare of measurable criteria. There is no argument.
@sauberbeast9 жыл бұрын
Dean - let's see how emotionless you are when your ranger turbo throws a cooling line and cooks the engine? Or when the gearbox decides to shit itself in the middle of no mans land? Or when you unknowingly drain the oil for longer than 10 minutes and destroy the engine on startup? The ranger is pretty, but she is poorly tested and guaranteed to let you down - go do your research.
@MrAkwaholic9 жыл бұрын
+sauberbeast There are no guarantees in life, including a guarantee to let you down. There are plenty of Ranger drivers who have been doing do for years without issue. There are just as many driving other brands who are just as happy. The opposite is also true where there are drivers who have horror stories about their vehicles, be it the Ranger, Hilux Amarok or any of the others in this review. I understand that a lot about buying a ute is personal taste and a lot of buyers do so without actually comparing one over the other. I have done a lot of research because I don't want to have to do it again because I made a mistake. In my journey to select a ute I drove lots of them spoke to mechanics, read endless amounts of blogs and reviews and in the end my opinion was that the Ranger was the best vehicle at the time. The Mazda BT-50 was a very close 2nd and then the Holden Colorado. The Holden was dismissed due to the uncertainty of the brand in our region.
@MrAkwaholic9 жыл бұрын
+sauberbeast In the end Mazda offered me a better deal and I couldn't justify the marginal difference for the price difference. I'm happy with my Mazda but I still think the Ranger is better.

I didn't here them say that the hilux is the only 4x4 there with reinforced back doors for safety. And that the resale value is much better to. hilux for life. 08 hilux 255 000km of tough driving and when I say tough I mean it and she is still going strong, hate to see her go but I just love the new 16 hilux.

@michaelduong38529 жыл бұрын
+Dean van der Merwe That is your opinion... i dont even need the ute for what it is capable of because i dont work in an area where i would need it or at least require to carry heavy load... i only have a ute to park in loading zones and thats it... so to me i dont give a fuck about the power or capability and care about how it looks because i will be seeing it on my drive way every day and not in the mud...

"D-Max 8.1L/100km 10.9L/100km 35 per cent over" Funny that I own 2 Dmax's 3L, owned 3 Rangers T6, Old Hilux and Amarok. While the Isuzu has a harsh ride and alot of engine noise.... it sure have better fuel consumption than quoted in your test!!! Maybe your calculator has issues.
