Yamaha jumpstarted the liter-class sportbike segment 21 years ago with its original ‘98 YZF-R1. Over the years it evolved, at times teetering toward a more street or track focused design depending on model year. But for its 2015 major redesign (www.motorcycli..., Yamaha had its sights set on track performance first and foremost.
--
Right away it was apparent the Tuning Fork company certainly did its homework, engineering a competent sportbike for setting fast laps at the track. But how does it perform on the road, on the way to work? We find out in this episode of MC Commute.
The YZF-R1 is powered by Yamaha's ferocious 998cc crossplane-equipped inline-four engine. Compared to other inline-four configurations, Yamaha's CP4 mill offers a rowdy powerband that feels like a cross between the punchy feel of a V-twin and the screaming high-rpm performance that I-4s are renowned for. On our dyno, the 2015-2018 generation R1 engine belts out over 160 hp at the business end of the Bridgestone Battlax tire.
The engine is hung in a racy chassis with ergonomics that follow the lines of the Doctor’s YZR-M1 bike. It’s also loaded with capable and easy-to-manipulate electronics that truly complement the engine and chassis allowing the rider to set fast laps with ease. For 2018, engineers tweaked the functionality of its wheelie control (Yamaha calls it “Lift” control) as well as adding auto-blip downshift functionality allowing the rider to downshift without the clutch at lean. Will these gizmos help us wield the R1 from stoplight to stoplight? Find out now this episode of MC Commute.

@@mystummyhurt2115 I would disagree, especially if you're tall. I'm young and I've ridden bikes with a more aggressive riding position for long periods of time, and they fucking kill my wrists and back after a while.

nomadben I actually agree with you now, I’m selling my R6 for a more comfortable option. It’s fine if your rides are less than 30 minutes in length, but long rides are awful on the R6. It really is a machine purpose built for the track, and you’re reminded of that every time you hit the road. I’m either getting a CBR 600RR or a super moto next

I demo'd a new R6 last summer, and it was a fat kid torture device. I was miserable the entire ride, but determined to give it a fair shake. The Yamaha demo rep said the R1 was a little more roomy, but I am not sure I'd even want to ride one if I was given the chance. Those things are track weapons, and I can't imagine owning one for street use. I realize it is a subjective thing...but IMO you've gotta be somewhat fit to enjoy a supersport even a little bit.

Fitness definitely plays a role in riding a super sport. The better your core is the more comfortable you will be. I ride an R6 and I have test ridden the R1. I find the R6 more comfortable and also smoother because it has the inline 4 without a cross plane crank. That however may be because I am pretty much molded to the R6. One benefit I find with SS bikes is that the air flow is much smoother than any other large fairing and windshield setup including touring bikes and adventure bikes. I've pretty much test ridden all the large adventure and touring bikes and I find the turbulence and buffeting much worse than on the R6. I wish Yamaha would release an R1 without all the electronic nannies. They add thousands to the price and nothing to the riding experience. Bottom line is if a rider needs the electronics to be safe and ride well then this is the wrong bike.

For anyone who is curious, the Yamaha is fast on track while putting down less peak power than other bikes, because the crossplane crankshaft makes the bike easier to ride. The firing order increases grip out of a corner. Most racers cant give a bike full throttle out of a corner. There is not enough grip on the side of the tire. Having more time between combustion bursts allows the rear tire more time to grip the road. This is how the Yamaha is actually faster on track than bikes like the fireblade or panigale which make more power. There is literally more rear grip on a Yamaha r1 because of the engine

But I have rode it over 300 miles in one day we did a trip to Canada and back and yea I was sore but just commuting to work you will be fine after a couple hours of straight riding I will have to stop and stretch for sure . I love the bike tho I go to the track so I wanted a track focused bike ..

@@justinporetta1803 incredible Justin thank you for taking your time to reply me, I know it's not the most practical bike and i may not go to the track for now because we don't have one here in Singapore the nearest is in Malaysia about 200 miles out and we have to get a tow truck and tow bikes there.. but the heart wants what it wants. Thanks mate for the info I was about to ask about FC and other stuff but i don't wanna bother you I'll find that out myself. Ride safe brother 👍🏽

Been a while since I've ridden the newer Superbikes with the exception of the new ZX-10R. I'm still happy with my old Fireblade (07). Still, I maintain this is probably one of the best newer sportbikes I've ridden. If I was to put money down on a new Superbike, I'd reckon I'd still go this over the Aprilia.

Very nice digital display on it. Next step would be to put a few cameras like in front and back and 360 degree views both for recording trips and for evidence in case of accidents. Would not be much of a stretch to add them although greedy manufacturers will probably up the price quite a bit.

a few suggestions maybe a minute more taking a look at the bike the front end fear end lighting and the dash and handlebar controls would be helpful to understand the bike a little more

Hey love your review. I’m really looking into 3 bikes. All 2020 Yamaha r1, s1000rr, Ducati v2. What do you think. Monthly track days and daily driving on and off. Price wise I love the Yamaha haha. Same price as the v2. But that bmw though.

I got to sit on one at my local dealership and while i really liked the seating position i felt that the bars needed to be set wider, but then again im used to my cbr600 track bike and i set my clipons pretty much as wide as they were capable of going lol. Would love to actually ride one on track though to see what it’s all about. If i were to get a new liter bike it’d have to be between this and the cbr1000

I would love to ride the new R1, I daily ride a 2012 R1 in northern Nevada even though the winter. Morning temperatures are very often below freezing with ties sometimes not above 45°F, why are one gave me a lot of trouble starting if it got cold. Otherwise it’s made for a great bike Even with the terrible gas mileage, I averaged around 25 1/2 miles per gallon.

I'm riding 20km to work and the same 20 back. Traffic is moderate to work and better on my way home. What is your opinion if i get this for a daily driver? I ride a Yamaha R3 2015 I think it's a great bike but recently I did a 200+km ride to Malaysia and my back was killing me. I've heard plenty of bad reviews for its street use but I'd like to hear from a 2015-2019 Yamaha R1 owner myself, what's your genuine opinion friend?

Exactly my thought . Yamaha made the R1 to give the customers the feel of a MotoGP bike everytime the bike is revved . They achieved it perfectly from the beginning . Might be the s1000rr or the rsv4 are better overall bikes ( atleast for me ) but they can never replace a R1 for me .

@Sparty081

You still have to use the clutch to starting rolling with the bike. those quick shifters will work going into 2-6 gear. No clutch starting out in 1st = stalling

Awesome video and even more awesome bike. I've owned 2 Yamahas, a 2004 YZFR6 and now I currently own a 2012 YZFR1, both in Team Yamaha blue. This 2018 YZFR1 in Team Yamaha blue is gorgeous. I don't mind the track ergonomics because it's not a daily commuter for me.

The best commuter sport bikes are d675 and the old Panigale L-2 Why? The reach to the handlebar or clippons is super short on them which results in an upright seatjng position compared to say the r1 and bmw s1000rr where you are laying over thr fuel tank at all times just to reach the clippons. They are also super narrow which make it easy to flatfoot the ground even though the seat is quite high up. The high seat position with pretty low rearset compared to japanese sportbikes make it comfy for the legs as the knee angle is not super agressive and you can ride for hours if you can deal with the heat. Nothing today beats d675 and the old Panigale when it comes to touring friendly sportbikes.
