Although the X5 and X7 share so much, is it possible that one is the clear winner for your hard-won dollar?

2019 BMW X7 vs 2019 BMW X5 - 2 great choices, 1 clear winner
Both the 2019 BMW X7 and the 2019 BMW X5 are made in Greer, South Carolina.
The 2019 bmw X5 vs X7 battle is based on variations of the same CLAR or "Cluster Architecture" platform shared throughout the BMW lineup from small convertibles to full-size SUV's.
The BMW X7 and BMW X5 share the BMW B58 inline 6 cylinder "Modular" engines making 335 horsepower. The X7 has 332 lb-ft of torque while the X5 makes 330 lb-ft of torque.
The BMW X7 V8 features BMW's N63 "Hot V" V8 engine with 456 horsepower and 479 lb-ft of torque. This engine earns its nickname from having both turbos between the 2 cylinder banks. This engine is not part of BMW's modular family.
The off-road package features a clutch-type rear differential lock while the V8 has a more modern electronic locking differential.
BMW is introducing Continental's MK-C1 brake-by-wire braking in the X7.
The 2019 BMW X7 is 9 inches longer than the 2019 BMW X5 with a 5 inch longer wheelbase and standard 3rd row seat.
The Dynamic Handling Package features rear wheel steering, bigger brakes, active anti-roll bars and the electronic locking diff on the V8.
The BMW X7 tows 7500 pounds in either 6 cylinder or V8 models.
Cool tech: The around view cameras anticipate road imperfections and adjust the suspension actively for a smoother ride, even over potholes.
The roll bars are active to anticipate to anticipate your next move and keep the big X7 flat.
The M Package is shadowline trim instead of chrome, a chunky steering wheel and alcantara headliner.
The BMW X7 power seats in the 1st, 2nd and 3rd rows are infinitely adjustable. All X5 and X7 SUV's feature the ZF 8hp70 8 speed automatic transmission.

I've been driving a 2013 X5 for around four years now. Bought it with 40k kms and it now has around 150k kms. It has been a great daily driver in every way. I've even had it up to 240 km on the highway, and routinely cruise between 160-180 with ease. Absolutely beautifully designed SUV. My only complaint is that interior cabin space is a little tight. It's great while driving (and parking) in the busy city of Vancouver, BC, but on a weekend road trip with the family things can get cramped with the kids, dog, luggage, etc. Looking forward to buying wifey an X7 for the next daily.

People complain about BMW's relatively poor resale value but smart people like you Robert come and scoop up a 4 year old dream car for 50% off and when you're done you'll scoop up a $100,000 X7 for about 30 grand and swear it was the greatest purchase you ever made...and you'll be right.

From car enthusiast, my current daily driver (‘11 BMW M3 4dr manual) and our family suv/wife’s daily (‘15 4Runner TRD Pro). Also, we were on Big Island in April, stayed in Waikoloa it has been our favorite island for past 10 years. Hello from not so summary Puyallup, WA. Already looking forward next trip back to Big Island :)

You got the engines completely wrong, the 6 cyl is Inline and not a V !! Modular applies only to the I4 B48 and I6 B58.

The air suspension on the X7 doesn't operate the way you describe when the vehicle encounters a pothole.

Recently test drove the x7 and loved the soft, luxurious and quiet ride. But it’s just too big for my daily use. I’m going to order the X5. But felt it didn’t ride as well on steel springs. None of my nearby dealers have air suspension version available to test drive. Do you think by adding air suspension and acoustic window, the x5 will have a similar ride as the x7?

It's a completely different ride with the air suspension. I haven't been in one without acoustic glass but that would seem like a must-have. The X7 has a more relaxed ride than the X5 but with the air suspension they're pretty close.

I kind of disagree with you I drove both the x 5 x 7 5.0 M sport package with 22 inch wheels the X5 much faster better handling on corners X7 not as fast and a big boat in corners chose the X5 5.0 22 inch wheels upgraded the software and put K&N air filters blows away my 2018 Range Rover Sport supercharged that I had in service multiple times air filters blows away my 2018 Range Rover Sport supercharged that I had in Service multiple times
