Interesting how the switched 12v lead doesn’t get power at the connector until the car is on. On my 2021 Tahoe I’m finding that every fuse in the panel is hot. Looks like GM May be using the ECM to distribute the power to the end connectors. Makes for a harder time when trying to wire both switched power and constant power for parking mode on my dash cam. Might need to wire switched power to the mirror as you have and run another lead to the fuse block for constant power.
@DmitrysGarage4 жыл бұрын
I found the same thing on my Sierra. Every fuse is hot at all times. I think they're just essentially running a digital power supply and supplying power as needed vs. using traditional relay/fuse.

@DmitrysGarage Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the kind words! I have not tried doing that, but I suspect it needs more than power. I believe it will need whatever other harnesses/modules it uses to get the signal from the rear camera. It also doesn't use the lift gate camera, it uses the one on the back of the cab. Not sure that camera comes on the non-live mirror trucks. You can run two devices off one power source. You should double check how much amperage they draw, but most radar detectors and dash cams draw way less than even 1 amp. As long as they're small electric loads it should be safe to tap in there.

I have a new Silverado with the same mirror. I have a Cobra dash cam with both front and rear cameras. Is there a way to wire it and use the camera mirror as the rear camera instead of running the rear camera that came with the cobra? Thanks, Randy
@DmitrysGarage4 жыл бұрын
Good question Randall. In theory I think anything is possible, however I doubt there is a practical way of doing what you seek. There is going to be the question of how the signal is fed. Is the cobra expecting a digital signal or an analog signal? Analog signals are easier to split, but I'm fairly certain the truck uses a digital signal. If both use digital signals and they both used the same encoding (i.e. TMDS like HDMI) you could theoretically split the signal i.e. think $10 HDMI Splitter that mirrors a signal to two different TVs or monitors. You'd send one back to the truck and one to the cobra. The challenge there would be media conversion. Neither the cobra or the truck are likely to use an HDMI cable that could simply be unplugged and split via a splitter from Best Buy. If we assume the truck and Cobra signals are compatible the challenge of tapping will be figuring out what media (cable) the mirror uses to send the digital signal to the truck's infotainment system. Once that is established you would have to figure out how to get in the middle of it (i.e. disconnect it at one end). Then you would have to convert it to a media that can be split by an off the shelf $10 splitter. Then coming out of the splitter you would have to once again media convert both ends to match the truck and the cobra. In an ideal world the truck would just let us record all its cameras to an SD card in the glovebox. Or at least offer an HDMI output that we could connect to a video field recorder. Without either of those options I honestly think you will have a much easier time just running the cable and camera the Cobra came with. This is an interesting thought experiment though. EDIT: Just for fun I googled to see if GM was working on anything like this: The Surround Video Recording System, sometimes referred to as Surround-View Video Recording System, is a General Motors technology that enables users to record video around their vehicle to enhance situational awareness, safety for the driver, as well as vehicle security. Captured footage is stored on a standard SD card in the trunk of the vehicle. Owners can choose to save certain captures indefinitely on the SD card or they can view or save the video files onto their personal computers. The recorded videos can also be played back while in the vehicle. Currently, the only GM vehicle that offers the Surround Video Recording System is the Cadillac CT6.

This worked for me but I had a heck of a time getting my ferrule pins to stay in the wiring harness. I pushed them in pretty hard but there was no friction in there and the pins would just slip back out again. I tried sharpening the pins to a point and that didn't really help. I couldn't think of another good way to keep tension on them to keep them secured. It's working but I'm afraid that I'll hit a bump and lose the connection. Did anyone have this issue and what did they do to keep those pins tight in the harness?
@DmitrysGarage3 жыл бұрын
Bryce, I think the big challenge is having the right size pins. If they're too thin they fall out, too thick you can't push them in. If the connection is too loose you may want to employ another tapping method like a splice and crimp + heat shrink to isolate it.

@DmitrysGarage2 жыл бұрын
The constant power wire is for dashcams that are meant to run while the vehicle is off. Mine is setup for switched power as I dont really park anywhere unsafe very often or for very long. If you don't need the constant power you can just isolate it so it wont arc on anything I imagine.

Nick, unfortunately I don't but really it's very simple. You just need the little transformer kit to step down the nominal 12V to the 5V USB power the dash cam needs. It's just wiring two wires (hot/ground) same as the radar detector. Those kits can be found on amazon, just look for dashcam hard wire kit 5v 12v.

@@DmitrysGarage hey thank you so much for the reply, can’t say I’ve ever had someone actually reply back with advise. So it wires in the exact same ports as the radar detector ? @DmitrysGarage2 жыл бұрын
@@nickbryant6472 No worries. Yep, they use the same pins. The radar detector and dash cam in my video are on the same "circuit" meaning they both share the same hot and ground wire for power. That detector is pretty good, I've had it for a few years now. I am intrigued by the Uniden R8 as well. False alerts are going to happen, unfortunately that's just part of the game. You start to learn the difference in how the signal ramps, the directionality (arrows), and interpret the severity of the threat. This one has GPS lockouts so it will block the K band radar sources it sees repeatedly which keeps it quiet once you've driven around a specific area a few times.

One question for anyone... where is best to route the wires from inside the plastic housing? I went along the mirror cylindrical beam, but it felt like a tight squeeze. Did anyone file down a little tunnel/arch on the plastic? Thanks!!
@DmitrysGarage4 жыл бұрын
Thanks Jonathan, glad you liked the video! Yea that's basically how I did it, along with the mirror beam. On other vehicles I've filed down tunnels, sanded and even painted to match. I usually see how much the part I want to ruin is so I don't ruin anything expensive. That way when I sell the car I can just replace it. On the Audi I had I filed it down because it was a $20 part and the squeeze was too tight. I think it just depends on the build tolerances of the parts, the Audi wouldn't let me put anything around the plastic, it was either a perfect fit or no fit. With the truck I could still snap it back and have enough room for the cables to get through. If your harness is thicker you may want to consider the tunnel, I doubt it's a super expensive part. I just wouldn't want a future buyer to be like "oh man what's this stupid gap in the plastic?

Are you sure you didn't trip a fuse? I would check all fuses and the harness connection first, disconnect any custom harness you may have added in case you have a short there. If you were using a multimeter you could do some continuity testing as well. I'm not familiar with the 2021 Yukon, was the wiring the same otherwise? Hmmm like the rear view mirror or the backup camera? I have not had any issues with my setup. I don't believe it would affect the backup camera since I'm not sure how that could remotely be the same harness. However, the rear view mirror needs to have a good connection, so if that is what is broken I'd check that the harness is plugged in well, if you spliced I'd make sure the splice hasn't broken the connection to the harness. Is it the same on gmc sierra slt 2019? Thanks

Another viewer said it worked for his mirror in his 2019 LTZ, so it may be the same. However, using the method I showed in the video you can find a hot switched wire in any vehicle :).

Awesome video, thank you. Just an FYI the dashcam link is now dead, please update so we can use your affiliate link. How did you wire the dash cam or did I completely miss that?
@DmitrysGarage4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the heads up, I'll get the link updated. I'm glad you enjoyed the video. The dash cam is wired just like the radar, it's just positive/negative, nothing special.

Does the dash cam wire step the volt up? i tried this but it i does not power my dash cam
@DmitrysGarage11 ай бұрын
Dash cams run lower volts, you need 12 to 5v step down if your cable doesn’t include it
@rickbrasche87814 жыл бұрын
how did you secure the voltage control box? Zip tie behind the mirror?

Rick, thanks for watching! I used a piece of 3M VHB tape (amzn.to/37iTtqO) to stick it to the back of the blendmount where you can't see it. It's really strong stuff.

Nick, I got the picks locally from Fry's Electronics, but something like amzn.to/2YiK7si or very similar to it would work. You probably don't need such a huge kit.

Any fire risk with tapping into the mirror like that?
@DmitrysGarage3 жыл бұрын
Just make sure the wiring is secure and the tap is secure. You dont want anything rubbing through and grounding or jiggling loose and sparking. Otherwise as log as you keep factory rating fuses you’re fine.

The battery negative terminal under the hood, which is the ultimate ground for the entire vehicle. I explain this at 2:30. Thanks for watching!

@@DmitrysGarage There is a ground near the kick pillar if you are writing down to the fuses anyway.

I recommend this Viofo dash camera: amzn.to/4aFx7BU This has one of the newest best low light Sony sensors for these kind of cameras. The sensor can also do true 4K unlike cheaper sensors where the 4K is faked by up-scaling 2k or 1080p.

Can anyone say if this will work in a 2022 Chevy Silverado 1500? The cover looks the same but haven't pulled it down yet to look at the wiring and plugs behind. Hoping they didn't make changes for the 2022s as I have to have a radar detector haha

I'm really not sure. I would assume it is, if the wiring all looks the same color and pin wise you're probably good to go.

@@gagerutledge4620 hey there. I tapped the mirror the exact way the video described and so far, no issues with the truck at all, or the detector. Anyone had any luck on a non-powered mirror? I don’t have the wires that he was talking about in my truck.
@DmitrysGarage3 жыл бұрын
Jonathan, does the mirror have no power at all? If so you'll need to find another 12V source. If it does have some power (i.e. for compass or similar) I would recommend snagging a multimeter and following the tutorial part of the video to find the correct cables for you. You can get a VERY good multimeter for under $40. amzn.to/3hp1nI0

So I don’t have the power mirror, but I have the camera power box. It’s that silver box you describe in the video. Would I be better off hardwiring it in or can I still tap to the wiring around the mirror?
@DmitrysGarage3 жыл бұрын
I would not try to tap the camera as I believe it is used for collision mitigation. I would avoid messing with it. Its also probably not 12v they’re usually lower voltage. If theres no other power there you may need to tap a different switched source. There are some fuses on the passenger side as I recall that may work.

It’s a plug & play wiring harness that uses the factory connections. All of this is unnecessary. Just buy the harness and you can mount your detector in about 10-15 mins.
@DmitrysGarage Жыл бұрын
I mean there was only one for sale on the market when i made this and its like $75. Sure you can buy it, and I even linked to it. However learning a skill (finding switched power/ground) or even just doing something yourself isn’t unnecessary just because you can pay someone else to do it.
