The Hyundai Veloster N Is A Genuinely Fantastic Hot Hatch

South Korea's latest hot hatch is the 2019 Hyundai Veloster N. Its potent 2.0L turbo packs up to 275 horsepower (base 250 HP) and 260 lb-ft of torque. The car has substantial features, especially with the performance package: electronically controlled suspension with various damping settings, an electronic limited slip differential, a variable induction system, performance summer tires developed specifically with Hyundai, and even an anti-lag system!
I drove the car on the wonderful roads of Germany, as well as on the infamous Nürburgring Nordschleife. The car has an emphasis on affordable fun-to-drive, and performance allowing it to be track-ready from the factory. Currently, there is only one transmission available: a proper 6-speed manual gearbox with downshift rev-matching if you so choose to use it. The exhaust crackles with each shift as ignition timing is delayed, allowing a bit of fuel to enter the exhaust. Check out the video for full impressions!

Tell us how the Veloster N differes from the S2000 you own in how it drives, accelerates, and how the braking compares. Along with some positives/negatives, what's better, what's worse.

Engineering Explained I think we’re in a golden age of Korean cars right now. Kia and Hyundai are hiring loads of BMW and Audi engineers to build up their reputation and we’re getting some great bang for the buck performance cars like this veloster and the stinger. Eventually they’ll go upmarket when they build up more of a reputation, but right now they’re putting out some stellar stuff for very competitive prices.

@MarshalBeard

TheJacobShapiro Don't forget about the new Genesis brand. The Hyundai Genesis was so successful and in my opinion revolutionized how people view Hyundai that they have their own luxury high end brand now, and they're very competitive with brands like the nicer Mercedes, Audi and BMWs. They've already gone upmarket and they're doing great. On a side note, I work at HCM (Honda's Canadian factory) and Hyundai's market share in Canada, U.S and Mexico are increasing about 25% the past 3 years while Honda is generally stagnant. That's really impressive.

That's the benefit of bringing in German engineers and designers :) I have always thought German designed vehicles are the best looking... General Motors have done it with their Buick line, and Ford has done it with the Mustang if not more models... It is nice to see that "German" influence spreading through out the automotive manufactures. Lets get away from those box designs that so many companies love to do, and design fluid flowing lines that draw the eyes in.

Mzn T: What a crock! Mr. Biermann's knowledge and experience don't belong to Germany; they belong to Mr. Biermann. There was a time when the official ideology of Germany was that all Germans, wherever they lived "belonged" to the German nation. Fortunately, that point of view was destroyed in 1945.

Andrew Winslow Sure it provides a tiny amount of antilag, but it has no real purpose in street use, you're just wasting a bit of fuel. The Veloster isn't a rally car. VW & Ford tuners have been crackle mapping their turbo-4 cars for years, it's just cringey to see relatively low power cars coming with such tunes as stock these days.

I purchased a pro pack a few months back, i must say, after 6000 miles with a 1400 mile road trip in it, its an amazing car and it grows on you, i didnt think i could love it any more than i did when i drove it home, yet after going to a city where dodging traffic is fun, it is the most wonderful vehicle i have ever driven, to include some serious sports cars such as camero SS's and scat pack challengers/chargers and a chrysler 300 srt8 and so on, not because its faster or handles better but because it is something that can be taken to track and raced really hard and be a lot of fun, but it also does small fun things really well too, ive been able to get it to powerslide and it feels almost rwd, ive don full blown donuts in second gear IN A FWD CAR, the torque steer is there, but not annoying or aggressive, more playful than anything. Truly an awesome car and nothing i ever expected to see come out of a hyundai dealership. its a fun track/rally car, but its still a fun and playful daily driver. A car i think you can recommend to anybody, even if its not their typical style of car.

I worked at a Hyundai dealership when the Veloster first came out. It wasn’t a bad car but the engine was WAY to small for its looks. It has a more performance style to it but an engine from a go cart. It is really nice to see that they are stepping the Veloster up and giving it performance that matches it’s style. Would love to drive one.

i30N = Golf , Veloster is more like a VW scirocco. Anyway, if you buy a car to impress people in the parking lot you completely deserve that Golf. Leave the really good cars for people that actually buy one for the fun of driving.

@SG-wj2qj
@SG-wj2qj 6 жыл бұрын
DevastatorKnight not really, Volkswagen offers somthing that hyundai simply don't. Quality Fit, finish and materials with a healthy does of refinement. A base GTI is 26k and well equiped. The SE model at 30k is perfect. For 30k you get the I30N with 240hp. arguably the performance is slightly worse unless you get the 270hp performance model at 33k. but then the Veedub is just nicer to be in, live with and the automatic DSG is simply brilliant. (it also should be noted that VW under rate the GTIs output as it actually makes about 250-260hp) Additionally. The Veloster N is going to be more expensive. Coming on at around 35k... At 35k you have the GTI Clubs port. And that will leave i30N and the Veloster N behind will being nicely refined. But to each their own needs. If you got 30k burning a hole in your pocket and you favor performance of refinement. A i30n over a GTI SE would be the fairest choice.

@SG-wj2qj
@SG-wj2qj 6 жыл бұрын
DevastatorKnight which is fair, tbh Volkswagen just needs to be honest, the GTI is advertised with 220hp/ 258tq But when you dyno test it. Everyone finds 220-230whp/260wtq (Factoring In DriveTrain loss of about 15%) and that puts the GTI at about 250-260hp & 300tq. Which is plenty for this car. And the club sport has 292hp (turbo from the Golf R)

Engineering Explained Whoops 3100lbs but yeah my 2006 Acura TL full size sedan only weights 300lbs more than that hot hatch. I think i'm too used to 90's lightweight hondas. My girlfriends 02' Civic Lx 5spd weighs in at 2400lbs :O

Sawyer Wow i never would have guess the 2G TL weighed more than the 3G. ~30 more hp & less weight, my car certainly doesn't feel light but it's still light enough to get loose on corner entry and transition. Modern cars have lost this feel IMO with higher saftey increasing weight and electric power steering reducing the cars feedback through the wheel.
@npaul4171
@npaul4171 6 жыл бұрын
I agree the higher weight has certainly changed the tossability feeling (certainly with the benefit of increased survivability, which is beneficial at a time when it seems every other person on the road erroneously thinks they can drive while sending text messages.) The car I just purchased is one of the few remaining with hydraulic steering...and I must say I really like it.

Yeah but just buy up all the designers from everyone else and yet somehow that impresses people. It means they can't make it on their own so they steal all the competition's ideas and designs instead. Pretty typical though. It's no more impressive than making a football team by throwing money at the best players so they all play together on the same team. It just shows lack of creativity and vision and all about just cheating the system and i expect nothing less from them to be honest as they have always been copiers not innovators. Take a look at the real innovative tech and it's Germany not Korea. However if you only want to pay for a Timex watch then i guess you get what you pay for.

Nice! I owned a KIA 2017 Forte5 SX-T with the DCT, the velociter was on my radar when I bought the KIA but the Hyundai just wasn't that good. and I'm glad to see Hyundai starting to come into there own and make fun quick cars,(I like that new crossover SUV too) For my area the KIA was a fun car, quick in the curves but still tame. Nice for trips and 35+MPG in non sport mode was nice on the highway. Currently running 2018 RAV4 for reasons and I really like it, but I like where Hyundai is going(KIA should follow soon). Great review:) keep up that awesome work!
