The Jaguar I-Pace EV400 is a dual-motor all-wheel drive electric car designed for high speed cornering as well as light off-roading, but how does it work on snow and ice? We take the I-Pace into the cold, to have some quality donut time.

The test car you have driven seemed to be part of the media cars Jaguar has been providing the media. I believe those have not been updated with the latest software. I currently own the “S” trim with the latest update. I wouldn’t call it painful to use, but it is laggy compared to something from Audi. It’s about the same lagginess as the Volvo’s Sensis infotainment system.

@@bruintoo Good to hear it's improved over this pre-production test unit. Still, it's 2019, laggy car operating systems at this point is just car makers being lazy. Congrats on getting an I-PACE. I heard that most of this year's production units are going to European customers and we'll be lucky to get anything here in the USA.

Got my I-Pace two weeks ago (Nov. 23rd) and love it. Am already at 2000 km (1600 miles), no issues at all. It a Business Edition S model in the same white as in this review. Other contenders where the Model 3 (EV, but very different car) and the Etron. Model 3 I did not choose because it seems that everyone's getting one these days. And the Etron is a lot heavier, slower, has a shorter range and is simply completely boring. The I-Pace, by comparison, is a drivers car. Car has all the latest updates and will get the H264 update at the end of this month, promising an increase in range of about 8%. So far, no problems with laggy screens, errors, black screens or anything else. Dealer was very nice and professional. IMHO, the first series of the I-Pace clearly did not have finished software and it showed in lots of problems, errors and complaints. This seems to be resolved by now (luckily). So far, very happy with the car.

@@rpgPalette My apologies, only just noticed your question. Well, the I-Pace has been a blast and fun car to drive for the last two years. I am now at 53000 km and the car has been absolutely flawless so far. I get about 430-450 km range in summer, around 330-360 km in winter. Car is quiet, comfortable and roomy but also extremely fun to drive if you like a sporty drive now and then. Mine is the one with the slow charging which I knew when I bought. In reality it has never been a problem at all. I use fastcharging as little as possible and with a bit of planning it's rarely needed (4 times in 2021). In my country the charging infrastructure is excellen, so there are normal charging points everywhere.

Glad you mentioned that you'd be better off with dedicated SNOW tires in the conditions portrayed here - it is COMPLETE foolishness to hope that even a full time all wheel drive vehicle is SAFE in these kind of conditions because NO vehicle INCLUDING AWD and 4X$'s escapes the laws of physics ESPECIALLY under braking and cornering - dedicated snow tires are not a luxury item under these conditions but absolutely NECESSARY for safety!! All Season Tires are a COMPLETE misnomer when it comes to snow and icy roads!!! Thanks for the fun video - I LOVE the I-Pace too and WANT one . . . BADLY : ) SO classy and modern looking plus it doesn't suffer from the Darth Vader school of automotive design at the front end that features all kinds of ugly vents and grills etc. a la Toyota Avalon, Lexus and some BMW's

Chose the i-pace over model y and e-tron after test drives; model y felt like ikea quality and the Audi was numb to the driver. The Driveability and quality interiors made it a no brainer. Have the '20 MY and really do not have an issue with the supposed lag that so many Hang their hats on.

Concerning the seats: you're better off sticking with the standard 18 way adjustable heated and ventilated sports seats, which are insanely great. I tried the "Performance seats" that are in the tested model and yes, they aren't great for tall people (I'm 6 foot 6). The side support of the sports seats is more than sufficient because due to the low center of gravity the car has zero body roll anyway. In the second row, the performance seats also impinge a little on the rear passengers' leg room. So they are 100% for show. Personally, during my test drive, I was impressed with how fast the reversing camera came up; it was full screen and during the few seconds that I used it for I didn't notice any lag. I have heard in multiple reviews that the camera is slow to activate and the display is tiny; not in my experience and not compared to a 2015 Audi S3. It could be that the test cars are running around with the older software. There are OTA updates, but you have to apply them manually. Another thing that often comes up is that the range display is erratic. This is due to the fact that the car predicts your range based on YOUR recent driving habits. If you get the car from somebody who has been hammering it to do 0 to 60 dashes, it will show a really low range. If you got it from a eco-saint it'll show a fantastic range and you'll be super disappointed. So there are reviews out there that go all the way from "much better than expected", over "super accurate" to "incredibly over-optimistic". I didn't get to play around with the infotainment system at all, but it sure looked good. My experiences with the new Audi A6 (highly rated) and the (terrible) Renault touch screen systems both told me that using a touch screen while driving is incredibly distracting and I, at least, am just as likely to run off the road as to find the right place in my podcast :-)

The camera issue is not so much how quickly it comes up, but it does not run in real time. In other words, it will basically freeze periodically without you realizing it, and then all of a sudden *bam* you just smacked the wall.

I think as drivers we are ... we must have the ability to overcome software and hardware issues. We must go back to driving school and learn for ourselves how to park correctly at any situation. In my country (is not considered as developed as US or EU) we don't even bother if rearview camera is quick or not cause less than half of cars have it. I'm really concerned how lazy we're becoming. We do not need to shift anymore, if we steer with a car passing by our side, the system will warn and even keep the car in the lane for you. We must think this tech as an emergency as we can be tired, or lacking attention sometimes but we trust too much on these things to take actions for us. I'm also very grateful with customers feedback in many videos. Compliments are way higher than flaws. I also think Jaguar made a huge impact in the market. If touch screen is not fast enough, some updates could make it better. If buttons are not very logic they may change in the near future. All flaws that were pointed out in reviews are just simple to correct. Normally they'll come after restyling in 2 or 3 years.

Sluggish infotainment systems present a real world danger, because eyes are diverted away from the road for longer periods. I leased a 2015 Lexus GS F-Sport for 3 years, and my only major complaint was that sluggish infotainment system with the quirky controller.

No, it does not. Everything you need to drive the car is there on the HUD, dash, and steering wheel controls. Plus it has Steering Assist (autosteering), Lane Departure Warning that vibrates the car like a rumble strip does, and of course Adaptive Cruise. It's a very easy car to drive in traffic or on the racetrack. I suggest turning OFF the SC/TC (TrakDSC) for track use, it will slow you down. It natively understeers, and quite a bit, but so do most AWD heavy cars with SC/TC disabled. Once you learn what it wants, it's actually pretty fast around a track especially in the rain. Fast enough to embarrass a lot of performance sedans and even some sports cars. It does like a 'slow boot' to get started though. Unlock the car, hold the brake, push the ON button solidly. Wait for all systems to wake up. One undocumented feature about the I-Pace is that it has very low parasitic losses. Usually under 1% a day. Some $$$$ EVs will lose over 10 times that. But the downside is, it shuts down completely. So a little patience will enhance your driving experience. Once everything is booted, there is not much of a delay to do anything IMO. There are some software bugs still, but everything I normally use works well.

Sorry I disagree with you on the infotainment. It’s nowhere near as bad as you make out and the speed on YOUR video appears fine. Why do reviewers with limited originality default to infotainment as the defacto weak leak. Was it as fast as my iphone, of course not, but was it as bad as your making out - no. I also prefer the tactile interfaces and Thank F for Apple CarPlay/Android Auto - both features lacking in a Tesla. Still waiting on an Enron tester but I was absolutely impressed with the IPace. Best car Jag make by far.

I agree on the response time of the infotainment system. In the video it looked fine to me. An additional point is - How many times are you driving and using the touch screen controls. Not very often, so the point that it takes your eyes off the road is mute. When I pick up or hang up on calls, I always use the steering wheel controls.

I’ve had my I-Pace for 3 weeks now and the infotainment is fine, but not great. It’s not butter smooth like an iPad but it’s much better than what you get on say a fancy laser printer. Unlike recent Audi efforts, there is a lot of customizability, which I like, but is not for technophobes. The wisdom of a touch interface in a car is another matter entirely. I would say Audi’s is better but less customizable, but Jaguar’s is more than fine.

How much of the battery - and range - depletes in the cold? Very hard to get an honest, everyday review of an EV in the winter. Don’t care about doing donuts. Does the cold deplete more than 25% of the battery? This is super important yet there are few articles and shockingly few reviews which cover this topic. Here’s why.... Say, to preserve battery integrity, I only charge to 85% each evening. In the morning, If I drive 50 miles before getting to work and drain the battery from 85% down to, say, 50%, will there still be sufficient battery left if the car is left in a freezing cold parking lot all day? I don’t want to come out after work and find the battery depleted to 30% and I now have to drive home stressed, without the ability to heat the cabin for fear that I would drain the battery. THAT is what I need to know about in the winter.

That full glass top will allow a lot of sunshine into the IPace during the Summer thereby causing more interior heat. This will cause the owner to run the battery draining air conditioning. The range should be higher with a 90 kw battery, but the IPace weights 5000 pounds. The Chevy Bolt gets 238 miles in the Spring, Summer, and Fall. Of course the Bolt doesn't look as good as the IPace. The future of electric vehicles is bright indeed.

Using Jaguar brand for 18+ years and this is my horrible review with the I-PACE. I've had a horrible experience with Jaguar's I-Pace. I had the vehicle for a year, and have only been able to drive it for approximately 2k miles. It has had issues with battery, software malfunction, charging system, and even when you would try to start the car it would make noises. Its a shame that Jaguar has tainted its brand with such a problematic car. If you want to be walking to places instead of driving, BUY a Jaguar I-PACE.
