Note: You can turn the artificial sound in the I-PACE off.
This is a rough and ready episode, some wobble on the camera and wibbly driving by Robert, but first impressions on a long drive around Portugal in the Jaguar I-PACE are very encouraging.
Costing from £63,495, this car is eligible for the OLEV electric vehicle grant scheme. (We didn't know this when I was in Portugal)
And the I-PACE will be present at Fully Charged Live this weekend!

Just saying.

Dear Robert, you keep referring to "proper journalists" and such, but I think I speak for most Fully Charged viewers when I say I prefer your un-proper approach to reviewing a car. It's very spontaneous, informal and fun, and I like it a lot. There's enough of that "proper" bollocks on every other motoring channel, where they ramble on about boring motoring journalist stuff like how good the chassis is and the sharpness of the steering and other stuff 95% of us don't care about. And the next time your in Portugal, give me a shout, we'll go for a coffee :D

It really does not matter... I think the I-Pace is going to put a small dent in S and X, E-Tron will do the same, as Will the new Mercedes crossover, and all will have time to establish a market before Tesla get to the Model Y... Right now they are just fighting to stay in business, CEO crying and all...

I just think one needs an indoor garage if one is going to own an electric vehicle. And homes with indoor garages are at a significant premium so I guess it makes sense to make an upper mid range offering for electric vehicles.
@shonunezekiel

Ketan Jivrajani why do you think you need an *indoor* garage? If you have off-street parking outside your house (or charging at work if you drive to work), that will do fine, in my opinion/experience.
@goodforwatch
@goodforwatch 6 жыл бұрын
Tom Mowlam It's not common here in Calgary where I live. It might be different in other cities. Anecdotally speaking three quarters of homes even new homes here have street parking so...And work charging is another thing which I've never seen but then again I work in retail so...All this is pointless because our state doesn't give a tax credit for EV's or clear the snow in residential areas. Moral of the story what you need in Alberta is a big "insert your colorful adjective," truck or a wannabe truck. Which makes this off road capable jag a worthy contender, if one has an indoor garage that is 😊

You don't buy an EV if you're concerned about affordabilty - makes no economic sense to pay 2x for same performance as ICE. Can buy an extremely nice used Land Rover/BMW/Mercedes/Lexus with low miles for substantially less money than a Tesla/I-Pace - and will save a ton on insurance and running costs.

I love it. Major auto makers are starting to make some really compelling electric cars. It's not a Tesla, but I do credit Tesla for creating the demand for this kind of car. I doubt Jaguar would have made the I-Pace if there was never a Model X. As for me, it might as well be a space ship. I could never afford one, but I'm starting to think that we might actually see an EV for less than $20,000 with a 150-200 mile range some time soon. That's something average people can afford and that's when we'll know that we've arrived.

Tesla announced recently that they will underprise in 1-2 years 100$/kwh on the packlevel. That is the point where an electric car is cheaper to build than a normal ice one. So maybe soon after 2020 this could become reality.

@Chris B Amen!! I think a lot of credit is owed to Tesla, and that's what actually bugs me with so many of the new "Tesla killers". If we're doing an electric car, why would we want to view it as a "Tesla killer", when it's on the same team?! Bizarre! Just shows that even these EV's are somewhat token measures I think of a car industry that could nearly be wiped out in a decade, especially as cars become redundant and we focus more on transportation! As for the 20k 2-300 range car, that probably isn't too far off although I dare say it's little to do with the price of a kwh! At the end of the day, it would only need approximately a 40kwh battery, if we're currently around the $200 mark, that's only 4k for a battery more than the predicted $100/kwh "breakthrough", so it could be done now. $4K on a 20-30K car isn't massive, and could easily be worked out through gained manufacturing efficiencies. The biggest hindrance I think is the simple fact that switching to electric cars will kill mammoth industries, from auto parts, to oils, to after market products the stakes are huge hence the backlash against Tesla by the media companies owned by the likes of Rupert Murdoch etc who clearly have vested interests!

Have to give some kudos to Jaguar. At least they are extremely aggressive in their communication. Sounds like all this is a "world first", but I guess it's well documented that this already happened 3 (?) years ago, even bigger (spacier), heavier and more powerful (and vastly over-engineered). But at least "they" are coming along now. Anxiously awaiting the Audi E-tron (2019), the Mercedes EQ (2019ish?) and BMW iX3 (2020 jeeeeeezzzzzz). Glad you mentioned the supercharger network. It's not just a minor detail (when doing trips). Cheers!

I find it a fascinating insight into human nature(or the nature of contributors here -not the same thing!), that a significant number-it's into the hundreds! - have gone on and on - and on! about the sound effect! A trivial point to say the least. And as it's optional, meaning that it can be switched off - that's SWITCHED OFF... Then surely it's a complete non-issue!? This is clearly a highly competent and very attractive car - we should concentrate on that....

Jaguar in creating exciting and impeccable EV shocker! And having watched a couple of the others, a great review to boot. Interesting point about the charging though, bigger range requires bigger batteries, and bigger batteries require bigger chargers. I recently plugged my 41Kwh Zoe into a granny cable ( 13 amp socket ) and was presented with a charging time of 27 hours....so what's the iPace? 60 odd?....that's two and half days!! Our 7Kw home charger will do it in around 5hrs, but again for the iPace you have to double that and then some. Public charging assuming you're on a motorway or near a city is 50Kw (ish) but away from the hubs, the situation in rural England is pretty dire. Pop over the Chanel or the Irish Sea and things are very different, 22kw charging posts in everything from a large village upwards, so it strikes me that we need a massive investment in the network to make cars like this really work, and don't look at the government because the very last thing they really want to do is spend more to receive less in revenue.

It’s sounds amazing and it’s certainly an exciting vehicle. My only concern is the clear disadvantage you have without the Supercharger network, when you do need to use a public charger. The UK charging network is fragmented and frustrating, a lot of place only have a couple of chargers which could either be engaged or entirely broken when you arrive. The benefit you have with a Tesla is that Superchargers are everywhere and there’s always 20+ of them at each location (and they’re well maintained), oh and don’t require 5 different membership cards! We just need to get our head around a sustainable and simple charging infrastructure because right now it seems Tesla are the only ones making any effort with that.

I drove one of these about a month ago, very impressive. Drove it back-to-back with the F-pace, which is slightly better handling but oddly not as good off-road... But the price ($80k with the options you need - e.g. blindspot detection & heated seats...) and the lack of a decent, clear, easy to use charger network (and I'm in California which is awesome for this sort of stuff) makes this a 'wait & see'.

Good Review, I've had Jags and now a Tesla. Buyers should consider 4 main things when weighing up against Tesla, Supercharger network and Autopilot are big bonuses for Tesla, and the reliability and Interior quality for the Jag ( ignore off road, no one will risk that). Tesla Superchargers are hassle free and fast, public chargers can be a lottery, too many 'Iced', occupied, or faulty chargers to plan a trip with them. Yes it will get better, but it's not there right now. I love Jags, had them for many year, but Tesla's Autopilot is so relaxing and safe to use, So I could never buy a Jag again until they have an equivalent AP function. I do miss the Jag superior interior quality they are very good at it , Tesla is just 'Good' but certainly not bad like some people make it out to be. Tesla also has a slight 'space ship' sound to it, but it's genuine motor sound, not fake sound.

Flying someone out to test an electric car is a little inconsistent with cutting CO2 emissions but if I'd been offered the trip I'd have taken it so I am a huge hypocrite. Outside the bubble of EV fans I find friends are all pretty much determined to hang on to their diesels, they don't have half an hour to stop to charge in a day (presumably none of them eat or pee) and they seem to think the 600 mile range of their car is also an essential feature. For me charging at home is the main benefit of an EV but most people look at the charge time rather than the fact it just takes a few seconds to plug in and the car would be parked anyway. There is some hope though because they find the 3p per mile my car costs to run and the pick up away from the lights (even in a Zoe) has stopped the milk float jokes. Most people I talk to still believe that EVs aren't really that much cleaner than diesels because of the energy used in battery manufacture and they assume that the national grid is a lot less clean that it actually is so the emissions are just being shifted to a power station (in other words there is still a lot of education required) - rant over!

Rant on, I've been doing it for years. Next time this topic comes up in conversation ask how much electricity is used by oil refineries. The answer is a huge amount, and always from coal plants. One refinery in Pembrokeshire uses the same amount of electricity annually as Coventry. And the batteries have a life of 30 years plus before they are recycled. (10=15 years in the car, then repackaged into household or grid storage systems for another 10-15 years) When was the last time you used a 30 year old gallon of recycled diesel?

Once EVs get down to comparable prices on the second-hand market I'll buy one, but good as the I-Pace looks I can't ever see myself spending £63000 on a car (unless Brexit causes Zimbabwe-style inflation!).

Love the design! Only one huge problem is charging...90KW battery and only up to 7,2 Kw charging on 1 phase. Only a 32A 220 V socket!! Cost a lot!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! A 3 phase 16A 11 kw home charging with Tesla is so superior and cost much less to install if you have 3 phase. So if your not very very rich you will use a 220V 16 A = 3,6 kw. So going somewhere? Fill 80 Kw (nearly empty).. 22 hours...:-( I-Pace. A Telsa 80Kw = 7 hours :-) . If Jaguar fix that I will buy it in a flash...

Now explain why 32A 220V power supply should cost "a lot" more than 400V (3-phase) 16A ? And even if you would charge at 220V 16A - you probably won't charge a full 80 kWh every night, will you? You can do 50% in one night and the rest in the second. And actually, the best for the battery life is to stay between 20% and 80% SOC. pushevs.com/2018/04/27/battery-charging-full-versus-partial/

The iPace has a 90 kWh battery. At 11 kW (400V 16) the car would charge in 8 hours. At 7,2 kW the math says 12,5 hours. Add a little for some losses. If the owner has put down $70k for the car, the few hundred for a three phase (as this one significantly reduces charging time) should at least be an option.

Maybe they should consider an all-electric defender. For people that use them for their intended purpose, such as farm work, it might work. Mechanically I'm sure it would be just as capable with 100% torque and independent control of each wheel. Range wise how far does a farmer drive around the farm per day? Cheap to recharge and less mechanical bits may reduce maintenance costs.
@earthstick
@earthstick 6 жыл бұрын
If a farmer uses their ICE Defender on his own land it may be that the only time they use it on a public road is to get fuel for it. If the i-Defender can be charged on the farmers land then they don't need to use it on the road. They wouldn't need VED or insurance, along with lower maintenance costs it would cost little more than the price of the electricity. Solar panels on barn roofs might bring the cost to zero. A farmers gotta love that.

Well modern batteries packs for EV cars are made with Li-Ion, Ni-Co, so are solid stacks do not contain acid anymore like old regular cars batteries.. the stacks are bonded in parallel and sealed together in a large aluminum battery housing case which is filled with coolant and sealed and it is practically part of the EV structural floor.. so the coolant liquid is not acid, is there to help cooling the stacks in hot summer and to prevent battery damage in freezing cold winters..

It's all starting to make a great deal of sense now! I'd been wondering why no media ANYWHERE seemed overly critical of a car that's clearly quite flawed in it's design. I'm sure it's a great car, but lets be brutally honest, had it been a Tesla, we would have heard people picking away at it over all kinds of design choices! From the fake "cab forward" design, to the outright copying of some of Mazda and Hyundai's body line work, through to the lame name and lack of a rear window wiper to wipe away the mud from all that "offroading", the car clearly is less than perfect, but clearly JLRA have deep pockets and are quite happy to spend big on "bribing/exchanging favours for favourable publicity" with the media. It's unfortunate as I'd always been under the impression that FullyCharged was a somewhat "independent" show funded by viewers through the likes of Patreon. Instead it now seems to be a show that will obviously rather overly aware that it can't bite the hand that feeds it, in this case JLRA! It's funny, normally my comments get responses, without fail! But the comments regarding the i-Pace get nada, and clearly being somewhat critical of a car that's quite over hyped seems to be shut down quite quickly by the JLRA media gurus! Seems to me, that the oligarchs that for decades did all they could to stop the electric movement, are now employing the same techniques as the tobacco industry did. On the one hand, they do all they can to shoot down Tesla/the electric car movement, on the other hand, they produce an i-Pace and try and steal all the glory! So, it's great to see another electric car, the more the merrier! Lets just not forget that this car owes a lot to Tesla (and even Mazda for the design lines!). And lets try and keep a FullyCharged that's independent, that doesn't take "freebies" off big companies or only do a drive when there's a company rep/north Korean "tour guide" sitting beside you keeping watch over what's said!!! I'd like to see a "raw" review. Here's our car, yours for the weekend, do as you please!!! That should be the mantra manufacturers follow if they want anyone to take their car "reviews" half seriously!

@DavidS-wm9ud

@High Trooper I agree! It's great to see any company switch to electric, I just don't like it when primarily there's no credit given to those who stuck/stick their neck on the line for something new and make it happen (ie Tesla/Musk, Apple/iPhone or the guy who designed the iMate!) These guys are legends, and to then have some guy like Ian Callum try and take all the credit and pretend he's created an entirely "new class" of vehicle (which he hasn't by any stretch of the imagination, lets be honest its not a great deal more than an electric CX3/CX5 etc!!!!), that just doesn't sit well with me! And the fact that as a supposedly "people powered" independent press, and guys like the FullyCharged team, will just so openly fall inline with whatever JLRA tell them to say, that to me is concerning!! It raises bigger issues about their integrity and objectivity in my view, which I think's disappointing. It's sad to see an otherwise excellent show go the way of so many before it, to being little more than an extended ad by whoever they're "reviewing"! Anyway, great to see another electric car hit the street for the masses (funny words if you say those last two fast!...da masses...dumb...assess!!!)

Why don't you criticize, that it can only charge AC with 7kW? That is a NOGO.
@davefiddes
@davefiddes 6 жыл бұрын
Seems a sensible spec to me to be honest. It covers the 3kW plug and 7kW dedicated home/top up charge requirement well. Keeps the big heavy charging equipment stationary at charging stations (of which there are many and more being installed every day). The Tesla 20kW charger (for example) is physically very big and heavy. Carting that around with you all the time is very inefficient and reduces the space you got for more useful things. Also, as the DC charger network and technology improves cars automatically. To be clear, I'm not dissing Tesla. They had to offer larger AC charging capability because the DC charger network didn't exist when they introduced the model S and it took a while for them to build out the supercharger network. Finally (sorry) I think that the detailed reviews of the I-Pace will happen when the journos get a chance to use the car in normal conditions. This was a very scripted car launch type event. Give Robert & co a chance! :)

I have a 22 kW portable charger, it's small and compact, the 7 kW charger is really a bad joke. Good luck doing a multi country trip, the 7 kW will delay you, the different cards, apps & protocols for the DC chargers will make it a bad experience. I've done several trips all over Europe with my S and I can drive 1000 km per day with no problems, for free. With this Jaguar you can not. As such this is still a better range city car, a yacc: yet another city car

RS232C 7 kW built-in charger (230V, 32A single phase) is meant for charging over night. It's not very strong, but it is reasonably sufficient. If the battery wasn't completely empty, it will charge the car during the night (from 9pm to 7am) to almost full. If you do cross-country, you should supposedly charge at 100+ kW DC chargers, these do their job from 0 to 80% (a charge up to 70 kWh) in about 40 minutes. Having multiple charging apps and cards, yes, that's the real problem, and also the the lack of 100 kW chargers, currently most of them are 50 kW. That is, as mentioned in the video, the big advantage of Tesla. Charging a Tesla is a bit faster if the user does shorter charging stops. kzbin.info/www/bejne/iH_HZ3mpiahpm6M iPace will probably even up if the charging stops are longer since Teslas starts to taper off after some 40% SOC.

I think it fails to consider a few things. Keep in mind that the Model S 75D has a 75kWh battery and a range of 249 miles (EPA), 9 miles more than the 90kWh battery in the Jaguar I-Pace at 240 miles (EPA). Not consider that the Tesla stock charger is 10kW, and the care can be charged from 0% to 100% in less than 8 hours, while the Jaguar 0% to 100% is actually 13 hours. Unfortunately, it appears that the much smaller I-Pace goes 17 miles less using a 90kWh battery than the much larger 7 passenger Model X, and goes 54 miles less than the larger Model S. In fact, the similar sized Model 3 goes 310 miles on a battery that is 20% smaller. So, for some reason, the Jaguar is using a much heavier and obsolete NMC battery which appears to take a significant toll on its range, and I wouldn't be surprised if the longevity will be far less than the Tesla NCA battery chemistry, which is considered the absolute leader in the industry today.

Actually, many Teslas have a 4WD too, it is in all nnD cars where D stands for dual motor. It is a user option. 300 miles isn't EPA range, this will be probably less, but yes, even a 250 miles range is quite decent. I don't think that more than a few percent of potential Tesla Model S or X buyers will go for the iPace. Even less Model 3 LR buyers - iPace is still a lot more expensive.

Hey Bobby Lew, you can program the engine management system to, at low speeds, pulse the motors on slippery offroad surfaces. In normal cars you have to rely on the braking system and the throttle controller.. (TRACS/ESP/Hill descent mode.. etc) Difficult on an IC car as the engine needs to keep up the revs to keep it running in an acceptable power band, and of course, not very efficient.) What does the pulsing of the wheels do? It stops constant power driving the wheels and bogging you in. Best example is single/dual cylinder motorbikes vs 4 cyclinder bikes. Look at the bikes the Dakar Rally, they are 2 cylinders (V-Twins mostly) and the power pulses driving the wheels prevent them getting bogged in. Trust me, electric motors will be programmed to have some very interesting characteristics for offroad applications. Land Rover will certainly be experimenting.

Chris B I always laugh at the old thought of forcing ICE companies to get into EV, that's such old news and so silly, as EV are still out of most people's budget, and wow EV including hybrids make up a huge 1.3% of cars, so yeah ICE car maker's are shaking in their boots, while making huge profits on their ICE cars while companies that only make EV lose billions. ICE car maker's will get into EV but their is no rush as until battery costs and limitations are fixed then EV will stay a niche car.
@shoelessjoe428
@shoelessjoe428 6 жыл бұрын
It's a 'chicken & egg' argument though. Electric vehicles have been around in some form or other since before the first ICE cars. Had EV's/batteries had the same level of focus / investment / advancement as ICE cars have by big multi-national automakers, they would be much more marketable and affordable than they are currently. ICE cars are only as 'cheap' as they are now because of these initial investments, because of their mass marketing and yes, because people are purchasing. EV's are obviously not being bought in the huge numbers that ICE cars are (There's currently very few EV options for buyers to choose from). But EV technology is finally playing catch up and EV sales are now increasing exponentially. They increased by 11% in the last year in the UK. By the end of this year there will be 200,000 on the road. Emu Analytics project that there could be 1 million EV's on UK roads by the end of 2020. Even if that's anywhere near true, that's a bonkers rate of growth. So it's not really accurate to suggest the demand is not there. Who knows, maybe soon we'll have consumption like that of Norway - where 48% of new car registrations are EV's. It will depend on multiple factors, not simply consumer wants. But over the next year or two we will see a considerable expansion of high powered charging infrastructure - chargers that could supply 100 miles of driving in approx. 5 minutes charge. The government are planning to spend hundreds of millions to expand charging infrastructure too. There's a number of great new EV's coming onto the market, like the Kona, the ID, the Model 3 and the Mini. Within months new 60kwh batteries should provide a real world range of 200+ miles - A LOT more than most people need on a daily basis. These are game changers in my view and should see that exponential growth continue, whilst ICE sales peak and then decline.
@captaincrunch3892
@captaincrunch3892 6 жыл бұрын
I always laugh at people like Gregory Bell, who think EV's are such old news, and so irrelevant, yet all the ICE automakers are spending tens of Billions on batteries, EV's, and have announced dozens of models arriving in the coming years. And I'm sure they are all doing that because they have nothing else to do with that money, so they decided to spend it all on a giant hobby like EV manufacturing they consider to have no future and no market share.

Can you believe I didn't used to like this. Just because it was an SUV I think. But when you see the way the roof, windscreen and doors are it looks amazing. I think it also helps that it's the sort that gets it's height from suspension rather than body height like some others (a lot of SUVs); I think that's the same reason why Dacia Dusters are so cool. To be honest the body is still tallish but no where near as much as some cars like certain land rovers or Tesla model Xs. I think it might also have something to do with the proportion of window height to the rest of the body. The window part on the Ipace isn't as high as some other SUVs so it doesn't seem as tall even if it is. The rest of the body is probably still similar to most other SUVs but the car is shorter in height because of the window height being lower but as the height of the lower part of the body stays the same the car looks even shorter in height.

Edi Pires a ‘better’ interior is completely subjective. I wouldn’t trade my modelS interior for the ipace’s if they paid me 10k.. I like it modern and minimal.. I like it endlessly upgradeable. You are not wrong that many will prefer the ipace’s more conventional interior, but that is not an innovation to, keep it like every other car being built that isn’t a Tesla. And while I’ll give it off road prowess.. I see no practical purpose to it. Do you live on a mountain top with no road access? Is it fun to take an expensive luxury vehicle into a rock, brush environment to get it dinged up? And Tesla’s finances are doing just fine.. you can’t build the future without paying the costs up front. No other new car company can either. The legacy car companies simply have had over 50 years to invest in their infrastructure.

airheart1 I wasn't talking about the interior design: I actually like the interior of the Model S (and the car overall) but the quality of that interior is very low for the price tag. About taking a car offroad: where I live there there are a lot of roads, but you can't asphalt every single track (especially on a forest). That's were off-road cars come in handy. Maybe is not practical for you but for a lot of people it is essential to have a car with that capability. Even luxurious vehicles can have offroad capabilities. The perfect example of that is Range Rover: an SUV designed to be an off-roader first and foremost.

sali man I am not the one that has said the Tesla is obsolete, but then you attacked everyone, all I asked is have you driven the new EV Jag to compare them, and yes I have been in a Model S and yes it's nice, however I would never own one as once that Warranty is gone then scary prices for repairs and already huge delays if have minor accident.

All if a sudden, people will realize Tesla is still 10 years ahead. Tesla is using NCA batteries densier, with unparalleled longevity and 4-5 times less Cobalt than those latest LG NMC batteries. Tesla are the only one to use IC motor and Switch Reluctance motor on the III which are simpler, cheaper, more robust, lighter but very difficult to control. And the proof is in the pudding: The 3 is 50% more efficient and the X 20% more efficient than this i-Pace for a given battery capacity according to EPA range. That is scary. Really. How far ahead Tesla is ahead. And the Model III Long Range AWD, with 50% more range is 33000$ cheaper and the Model S at the same price than the much much smaller i-Pace. Crazy.

Kamil I'm glad you put iyho. Both presenters have bags of charisma, I'd never complain although I share your views that Johnny is exceptional.

He was too much of a fanboy. He reviewed it in another video. He practically works for Jag. It was embarrassing to watch, but no one is without bias.

I preferred Robert to do this, he's just an ordinary man enjoying something. Johnny is a car journalist and a very good one but sometimes we just want to have a regular person perspective.
