I’ve been driving Porsches for 40+ years and this may be the best video I’ve ever watched that really explained the reasons to own one. Even the negatives that were mentioned are positives! Great video! P.S. I raced motorcycles for 15 years and tracked Porsches for 8 years...........I’ve always driven the base model Porsches as my daily drivers. I don’t collect cars........I only drive them. So, for me.........if you enjoy driving, a Porsche is the finest everyday car you could own. Yes, a bit expensive, but it gives you the best of all worlds.............performance, great handling, comfort, usability, and fantastic reliability. As the saying goes.......Nothing Even Comes Close!

@@thomaswelcomer8443 Pre - Post, they're all unreliable. I remember back in the 80's, my friends dad had a 911. When I asked about it, he went into a rant about how cr@p it was, and finally he ditched it for a BMW 944/924 Less said the better. I've known a lot of people with these including two of my landlords, and my boss .. who when asked replied "It goes fast ... sometimes" It was always at the shop being repaired. *The Worst Case* was my brother and my cousin who both bought their cars around the same time. My cousin was smart and ditched his as soon as the bills came. My idiot brother carried on and was greeted regularly with £2,000+ bills, a whole load of issues, a blown engine at just over 60k ... and afterwards, a continued slew of unreliability, parts falling off when driving, and more of those lovely £2,000+ bills. After 8 year he ditched it, but by then it was worth less than his socks. And Nick Murry (channel) after two disasters, he wants back in. There's No Fool ... -Like An Old Fool- Like Nick Murray! So VW or Porsche, What matters ore is how deep your pockets are and how much time you're gonna be spending arranging a flatbed truck ... yet again, calling the service centre and getting no reply, some sales manager expecting you to kiss his feet because he says: "we'll do it as a courtesy as its not under warranty" as though you got the car for free. And if you're in the UK, good luck with the Porsche UK head office, 'cause they REALLY don't give a f**k!

@@utubecomment21 what you talking about. i am sure they have a standard package that gives you a 3-4 year warranty at Porsche. if you drive any sportscar without warranty, it's your own fault. I drive sportscars since 10 years and had a lot of repairs but always covered by warranty

Another great piece. I actually love that Jack and Mark disagree about whether the 911 is worth it's price. It's refreshing to see car reviewers not just idolize the 911, but take it for what it is, and evaluate based on how it actually makes you feel. Thanks for the insight, and really looking forward to the GT3 video!

For 105 grand.. uhhh no. I’ll keep my hellcat and work truck for less than that. I’d say for 80k this car is a buy. But for 100 with no wow factor. That’s a pass. Hell you can buy a new C8 Z06 hardtop convertible with a auto lift and a good selection of options for that price point

Funny, I've long felt Porsche's were incredibly over priced and essentially over-rated. However, my dream car is a 997 Carrera 2S or 4S because at $35-45k for a lightly used example they are actually a fantastic deal. Even at that price range though, you can afford far more powerful and probably more capable performance cars brand new off the lot. If I had 100,000 bucks for a new car I'd be hard pressed not to buy the new Audi RS6 Wagon lol. That car truly has everything I want and seems actually reasonable price-wise given it's overall performance, luxury, refinement and utility.

I think other channels address the short attention span the most people have. Hands up, I get through a few minutes of an Autogefühl review, and I'm fast forwarding to the driving part. Usually I can't stand the fact that half of a Top Gear, Auto Trader, Auto Express, Carwow, Autocar, MotmanTV, MotorTrendChannel ... reviews nowadays focus on infotainment systems, cup holders and boring "Quirks and Features". But no one really gets technical, because they're all focusing on marketing.

The problem with having a modern porsche as your track car, weekend warrior, or what have you, is everything is basically an engine out service and repair. Very difficult to maintain as they get older which in my opinion, makes the affordability of it a bit of a myth

Gentlemen. I’ve owned a 911T for 18 months and it’s been fantastic. But....it’s now up for sale. I’m 60 y.o. next month and my tastes/needs have changed so I value comfort (with quality) higher than performance (with quality). So you’re both right - this is the best ‘all seasons’ performance car, but it depends on where you’re at as whether or not it’s right for you. Incidentally, my next car will probably be an LC500 😉

First of all, top shelf video as always. As an engineer, Porsche fanatic and track rat I can relate to this video on so many levels. I've been reading and lusting after the 911 since a young age but have never been able to afford one. Thanks to Turo I was able to sample a 991 Carrera S (March) and more recently the 991 GT3 (September) and realize my Porsche dreams. When I sampled the Carrera, honestly I felt completely underwhelmed; a case of meeting your hero. During that trip we had an F Type R and a Bentley Continental GT as well. The Porsche was flat out boring compared to the Jag and paled as a DD compared to the Bentley (obviously). The Porsche was certainly the precision tool in the group, but was also as Mark said, sterile and very basic for the money. I did not see the value, especially coming from the Jag which had an absolute sense of occasion about it. The Porsche listens and does what you tell it to do, the PDK was superior to whatever (ZF I assume) auto the Jag had. But the Jag was sexy, it was loud, the interior had more luxury. The Jag was a sledgehammer to the Porsche scalpel but it was thrilling every time I drove. The Porsche was only thrilling in the twisties and otherwise a fairly mundane DD. I also did notice some turbo lag, in a DD environment most will not notice but in something like autox I can see the 0.25s delay and non linear power annoy me. The GT3? Perfection on wheels. I do think you need some track or performance driving experience to truly appreciate this car, but otherwise I cannot recommend sampling or owning a GT3 enough. The best OEM, non racecar I have ever driven. In fact it felt closer to a race car than a street car. The sound at 9000rpm with a BBi exhaust, the communication through the steering wheel, how damn solid it felt after 23k miles and the throttle response were unreal. The GT3 is worth every penny. This time we also had a GT350 and C7 in the convoy. The GT350 is the best mustang I have ever sampled. I can't tell you the GT3 is 3-4x better than the GT350. The C7 is hardly worth mentioning honestly, fast but nothing special or exciting. But if I had the money and it wasn't my last dollar, the GT3 is what I would take home. Every. Damn. Time. Meet your heroes.

Great video. Really dig this channel and the partnership with Tri. I own a 911 T as my daily driver. It’s pretty damn flawless and very practical. You don’t sit in the car as much as wear it, like a crafted Swiss watch. It’s also a very fast car, which isn’t really mentioned in the video. If you keep it in the rev band, you have all the usable torque you could hope for and that great Porsche flat 6 howl. So, it’s easy to drive it with visceral emotion. And the car can handle that spirited driving 100% of the time while remaining reliable very day. It’s an amazing car, and I can’t think of anything else for 100k that offers rear-engine grip and fun, with beautiful classic looks and bullet-proof everyday high performance. It’s a bargain at that cost. Congrats to whomever wins this one.

Well, I just bought a 2018 911T with 4700 miles and in a manual. It's my 7th 911 since 1979. My last was a 2012 GTS4 and it was wonderful. I had a 2008 C4S that I found out after selling it was a real one of one car. RS Orange, Factory Aero, Ceramic Brakes, Sport Seats and a LOT more options. MSRP was $125K in 2008 and it wasn't even a GT3. This 911T is gonna be my new favorite. My first 991 and its the 991.2 with all the updates. I still have a 1975 G Model Carerra with 21000 miles that has been relinquished to "show duty" only as it become too valuable to drive around because of wearing all original paint. One of the best reviews of the T I've seen. About the emotional aspect though - I've been fortunate enough to have cycled through a number of interesting and emotional cars - including an NA1 NSX and a CTS-V Wagon MT. Most recently, I sold a GT4 and went to a T (around the same time I started going to the track less). Most internet commentators would scream bloody murder for trading ANY of those cars for a T. IMO, these cars are great "first, second and third dates", but they wear on you over time -- GT4 too stiff and low for crappy canyon roads ... hit a compression hard enough and your strut towers will blow (... google GT4 Strut Tower). CTS-V Wagon has tiny fuel talk and consumption of a Saturn V rocket ... more range anxiety than a Tesla. NA1 NSX impossible to find parts for, and all the master techs are retiring. The T feels like "the keeper". If you put Rear Wheel Steer on it and throw it into some really challenging mountain roads it comes alive. For that type of driving I'd rather have it than a Red Eye or LC500 or even any of the other aforementioned cars. As Porsche moves to digital cockpits, hybridization and eventual electrification (all in wide-body format only), I think this "last of the narrow-body base manual 911s" will most definitely age well.

I picked up a 2010 model and can't find a squeak, rattle, or other problem anywhere. A well purchased used P car really can't be beat regardless of trim. In for the raffle to support TRI. :). PS, would love to see you guys get your hands on a 987.1 or 987.1 Boxster / Cayman while they still were N/A, before electronic steering, etc.

Take this car to a track and you will fall in love. I also drove the GT3 while I was there and I enjoyed the T more. I'm not a professional driver, so the T was much more manageable and fun at any speed. Porsche got the T recipe perfect, hoping that the 992 version is even better. Yep - this is a great formula - the Jack/Mark combo, and Turbowski in there when he can to be “Kramer”. I drove the 911T and its one of the few modern cars that excites me but at the end of it for a hundred grand i too struggled and, for me, ill take a boxster Spyder for that cash. Seems out of left field the lc500 discussion but i do not disagree with you. Like you Mark i want to be over the moon excited for 100 grand but modern cars can do so much while being a bit boring. But I wouldn’t fault anybody for buying it - Porsche’s are expensive and the chassis highlights show where the money goes but the 911T is one of the better “values” in Stuttgart’s range.

Good video, but a little too one-sided. Drawbacks: power to weight is not great, and this is a sports car after all. Engine has turbo lag, it’s not the best. The AMG 4L V8 is the world’s best for no perceptible lag, sound, and power. Interior trim has some cheap elements: lots of blank switches. The plastic rear ‘glass’ distorts easily and is tough to get replaced under warranty.

Objectively, if there had never been a 911 before and this car came out, you would be head over heels with this thing! You put a lot of emphasis on uniqueness, and the fact that these are styled so similarly and predictably removes that unique aspect for you. This car is for a perfectionist. Someone who appreciates refinement and an overall level of quality. An American car is probably going to let them down in terms of overall quality level, so they don't bother. At the end of the day, having a refined precision tool is more important than uniqueness. That is who buys and loves a Porsche. I am a perfectionist who can't afford a Porsche, so I own a Mazda MX-5 (NC). It ticks all the same boxes I value with a significantly lower cost of ownership, albeit with a lower overall level of performance, too. Is it unique? No, not really... but there is no other sports car I would rather own for the money! As a perfectionist, I am always happy with my MX-5.

Porsches are much more refined than your Mx5, it ticks some different boxes there. I know cause I'm in a similar boat (I own an s2000). Drove several Porsches but didn't add up to more fun than my s2k on the week end. That weighs higher in my personal equation of value/cost and it sounds like it's the same for you. Somebody who wants to daily a 911 of course sees this entirely differently and doesn't want too raw/noisy a car.

Mark does such a great job articulating what makes Porsche so incredible and so frustrating. I drove a 2005 Boxster S and S2000 back to back. On paper, the Porsche should win in every category but if I was putting down cash, it would be for the s2000 EVERY TIME. There's something special about that car that no amount of great mid engine dynamics and badging can overcome. I spent a week with a 718 Cayman S. On paper it should trounce my Mustang GT in every way and yet it simply never did unless I was going 10/10 on tight twisty canyon roads. The rest of the time, sitting in traffic, driving around the city, the Mustang is the superior 'enthusiast' car because it's actually engaging in a playful way the cayman simply isn't. Precision simply isn't as rewarding or entertaining as a burbling v8 that wants to go sideways all the time

I have a 2017 S2 in the driveway. In 27K miles it has chewed through a set of rear tires (which isn't bad considering they are summer tires), and the water pump took a dump on my driveway (covered under warranty). The clutch makes a "sproing" sound when the pedal is depressed fully and the gear box feels like I'm rowing through a box of pebbles. The reverse lockout is joke, you can easily slap the shifter into reverse if you rush to shift into first from a traffic light. Why Porsche couldn't do pull up collar like so many other companies do I can't say. When the suspension is set to "normal" the car has an odd corner to corner floating motion which makes me kind of seasick (and I don't get seasick on boats regardless of the weather), the solution is to keep the suspension in sport. Other than that the car is great. Fast, makes nice noises, gets >25mpg cruising at 70...

As a 991 owner, the buttons are ridiculous. But you don’t use them most of the time, and it ends up being fine. Also, the rear seats are ridiculous, but they are there. My 9 and 13 year olds still fit back there, which makes it way more usable than a Corvette, Boxster, R8, etc. it really does transform the usability of the car. Good review. The T may be “just” a base Carrera with some sporty bits but somehow they made it more than the sum of its parts.

Soundtrack is more muted from inside, but it drives wonderfully and has great push at 2nd and 3rd thanks to the boost. I do agree w the emotion commentary, my 981 with open roof has more emotion (louder, really) that said for a 911 this one is on my wish list for realistic fun on public roads.

I actually think that the LC500 has the more timeless look than the 911, precisely because every Porsche looks the same. They have to update the exterior for every generation to the latest generation of automotive design's standards because the platform has already aged so much. Look at a 991 GT3 RS and look at a 991.2 GT3 RS and tell me the older model doesn't look like it came out of 2003. Now that the 992 generation has come out, even though the 991.2 GT3 is my favorite car of all time, the tail lights already look dated. Meanwhile, I just saw an LC500 in person the other day and I thought to myself, "wow, that look is gonna last 20 years". Sure, it's wacky and elegant at the same time like a banana split, but its unique look, the fact that it looks like the only car of its kind, is why it's gonna become ageless to me.
@elusivellama
@elusivellama 5 жыл бұрын
You can say that the LC500 is also the same way - it will not break down either, and it'll remain consistent throughout its lifetime. Yet, that Lexus remains something special, it evokes visceral emotions when you stab that gas pedal and hear the V8 roar, and it's a definite head turner. Of all the cars that Lexus has made, I think the LC500 is the top for me, beating out even the LFA because, well, I can't buy an LFA but it is possible to buy an LC500 now (even if I can't afford it, it's still available to the public).
