TFL has the best truck videos, it’s to bad Ford had to make them agree to not release driving impressions until January, I always went to TFL cause they were the first, but with the release coming early and consumers like myself already having their hands one a 2020, I’ve already watched probably a dozen videos on the driving impressions and I’m experiencing first hand since one is in my driveway. No worries, I’ll still watch, even if they aren’t first anymore
@DJ_Underwood4 жыл бұрын
You are probably seeing personal owner reviews and dealership reviews. They don't get an embargo (Ford couldn'd really enforce it anyways). TFL is doing right by their MEDIA embargo by FORD so they continue to get more FORD's in the future. Whether we agree or not, they are doing right by FORD and their fans.
@FordF-Super4 жыл бұрын
DJ Underwood no kidding I’m watching ownership reviews, btw, 5 Star Tuning already has their hands on a 2020 6.7, dyno numbers are to the rear wheels,,,,450 hp and 945tq, if you are going to be an owner, wouldn’t you watch owners reviews to gather opinions, or better yet buy one like I did then yourself or me, can personally do the reviews, all my point was about is this, TFL is no longer first, and the truck is already out, I’m about to go on a morning drive so I will review my own 2020 first hand. I like their videos but, the hell with bowing down to a large corporation, TFL just lost their pride and their slogan

I agree with you however with all the Sue happy lawyers the vehicles have to be safe, it can't be like back in the day when Chevy just put a big block in a 1500 and created the 454 SS nowadays that doesn't fly I heard once in order to justify a unicorn high performance build that does not appeal to the masses they would have to sell a hundred thousand of them a year. Or be a Halo vehicle for the brand that's why we have the Shelby GT350 and the GT500. Also creating a high performance truck it's going to have quite a lot of warranty claims from people using it just as intended as a high performance truck look at some of the warranty repair numbers for the supercharged lightning and you'll see what I'm talking about.
@daytona39274 жыл бұрын
@@KoolCordell I don't agree with much of your post. "vehicles have to be safe" are you kidding me, vehicles are more safe than ever, with more airbags, better crush zones, electronics that keep you in your lane, can detect if your sleepy and set off an alarm, put on the brakes for you, sensors and camera's up the kazoo that give you all kinds of information. You claim putting a big block in a truck doesn't fly nowadays, really why would that be, I'm driving a car that has 707 h/p, you do have to use restraint. The 7.3 Lightning won't be anywhere near that fast anyway. A mid to low 12 truck would be fine with me. Justification: Ford is practically the only manufacturer left that makes a regular cab truck. If they make a high performance model I think it will sell well, when Ford came out with the Raptor they thought it would be a flop, but did quite well with it. You can't really put this in the same class as a GT 350 or 500, it will be much cheaper and more reliable. Warranty issues, the old Lightning has the modular Triton series engines, they weren't all that great having many issues with overhead cam chain tensioner system. But that's not equated to the all new 7.3. This engine is built to last, first off it's a pushrod design, having top piston ring off turbo engines for heat resistance, piston cooling jets, 6 bolt main, roller valve train, roller rockers, Ford did their homework on this engine, and it does not have a turbo or blower. I'm sure you are aware that if you modify your vehicle you can kiss your warranty goodbye. Designed to be a torque monster which equates to acceleration, It would be a blast in a regular cab truck. I suppose they could make this in an extended cab, but not a four door.
@KoolCordell4 жыл бұрын
@@daytona3927 I should have been more clear in my post sorry it was late at night. as far as safety I'm talking about a full package engineering, when Chevy did the 454 SS they literally just shoehorned a big block into a 1500 and lowered it. Hell it didn't even come with ABS until it's final year. They did it because they could what I mean is every single feature has an r&D cost that has to be re-evaluated anytime of powertrain change occurs. can they build it? sure! the issue is they then have to run it through durability and engineering test and crash testing and it just gets too expensive for a model that at best will sell 6,000 units a year. Also they'd be shooting themselves in the foot because they've said EcoBoost is the way forward and you don't need a V8. they kept the 5.0 around because it was paid for and because fleet owners still buy them. I'm a bit confused about your regular cab comment everybody has a regular cab in fact GMC is the only way that you can get automatic climate control in a regular cab for 2020. ( If you want that) Ford tested the water for a street performance pack with the old Tremor (sticker package) it didn't sell well. Before the 6.2 came out Ford was literally giving raptors away. they even staged a raptor Roundup in Phoenix where they brought out 15 trucks for us to throw around the Lucas trophy truck course so they could sell them as demo models at a discount. if Ford would just let me build a 4.10 short bed regular cab 2 wheel drive f150 with the 5.0 and the 10 speed and offer it with two bucket seats with a center console I would be ecstatic. They already have the lightest truck in the class. Add a bit bigger brake to it and drop it about 2 in and I'd be stoked. Bring back the rubber stubber on the leaf springs from the original lightning to control axle hop.
@stevenp31764 жыл бұрын
KoolCordell Wouldn’t be terribly expensive to mod to your idea with the exception of the mid length bed that’s only 6 inches longer than the classic short bed. Given the 10 speed ratios 3.55 or the unicorn 3.73s are much lower than previous 4-5 speeds with 4.10s.

However that situation that you described is one of the things that makes me loathe The disappearance of the manual transmission in the heavy duty truck. having that crawler gear was an absolute lifesaver when I drove a ram 2500 with the manual. I'm really excited about the new 10 speed. I love my current 6.7 and have the truck exactly the way I want but.... That 10 speed may get me to sell and buy new. If the 7.3 was just a touch more powerful I'd consider just adding to the fleet and keep my current truck also. I was hoping for insane power numbers that destroyed the rest of the class not just a few lb ft more torque than an Ecoboost. Under 500 torque is crazy from that displacement. I was hoping for 550-600 stock. I just don't understand how they get so little with so much displacement unless it's detuned to run 500,000 miles. I'd gladly take half that with more power. They literally could have gotten much, much more with same reliability going forced induction and smaller displacement. 5.0 twin turbo Ecoboost anyone?? With the great job they've done with the 3.5 Ecoboost I just can't believe a couple extra cylinders and liters of displacement could be a bad thing. Ford literally proved there is a replacement for displacement and seems like they went backwards with this. I'm thinking they did it to avoid losing to many people picking the cheaper gas engine over the $12,000-$15,000 diesel option. I'd definitely not hesitate to grab a 500 HP 700+ ft lb torque twin turbo V8 gasser for $5000-$7500 option over the Powerstroke and I love diesel and have always owned multiple Powerstrokes of every generation from 95- my current 17. I've had a first year 3.5 Ecoboost F150 and it made me a believer in those little turbos. Since my first test drive of that truck I've been hoping Ford would build a bigger one for the Superduties as a mid grade engine choice. The regular gas engines just aren't enough and the Powerstroke is honestly more than most need. Either way, can't wait to see how the new 10 speed does and hoping someone builds the Godzilla engine Ford should have. Who knows, maybe I'll do it myself. How hard could it be, lol.

it's really going to depend on what you do with your truck whether the triple overdrive is going to make a difference and what gear ratio you choose versus what gear ratio you currently have. I personally enjoy Ford's EcoBoost products I have a fiesta ST and it's great and it truly can do Eco if you stay out of the boost and it does have a very entertaining power curve. However EcoBoost and heavy duty cannot go hand-in-hand yet. Talk about the 7.3 power numbers yes it is detuned for reliability if you go to ford.com and look at their chassis models you will see how much further they have to detune it to give it a 10% or less major failure before 250,000 miles. That's 250,000 miles assumed to be everyday fully loaded. I too would love to see a 5 l ecoboost engine however the cost would be insane to give you an idea it would probably have to have the same radiator and intercooler as a 6.7 the entire internal structure would have to be forged, it would have to have a massive oil cooler and the tuning on it would make it less than desirable to drive all of these would have to be in place for the longevity required of the heavy-duty market. One of the reasons diesels cost so much is because they generate more warranty claims. Now to go back to the 3.5 EcoBoost yes it is a fantastic engine and they continue to improve it and I absolutely applaud Ford I constantly trying to make it better however we all know that it can tow more than 13,000 pounds capably weither the truck and chassis and brakes can control it is a different story however we know the engine can do it just fine however it's requires a very specific configuration in order to hit 13,000 pounds people that tow that do not have that configuration experience high coolant temps engines begin to derate due to excessive oil temps which cause the high coolant temps and ultimately that's not going to be acceptable in a heavy duty vehicle. The majority of heavy duty sales to this day are still fleet sales fleet sales are typically operated by somebody who does not own the vehicle and does things less than desirable to those vehicles such as attempting to maintain 70 miles an hour on a 6% grade in a hundred degree weather with 25,000lbs behind it. Ford has to build reliability to counter that. A perfect case in point is the ram 6.4 Ike run that became notorious for tfltruck, the vehicle entered protection mode in order to prevent the operator from ballooning the torque converter from excessive heat this is why the speed suddenly became limited.

@@KoolCordell I tow anything from a couple of side by sides to tractors, bobcats, and a healthy size toyhauler. My 16 6.7 does it all great and is tuned, deleted, small lift on 37's. It did great bone stock also but if it can be better with a 10 speed it'll just bug me inside, lol. I agree on loving the Ecoboost lineup, like I said I had an 11 3.5 for over 5 years and it would tow anything I have in a pinch of needed except the toyhauler and that was more to do with tongue weight than anything. I can't understand how cost could have been the issue since they developed the 7.3 from a clean slate and it'll also have massive cooling system for the exact same reasons you mention. The coyote block had proved to hold massive power reliably. I think Ford could have beefed it up some and put a couple of low boost turbos on for as much or less than developing the 7.3. Maybe the 6.2 even. Like I said, i was thinking of this for a mid grade choice between whatever base engine and the $15,000 diesel. More choices can't hurt sales, look at the F150 engine choices they offer. I think the regular 3.5 Ecoboost with added cooling would have been a better choice for the Superduty and performed better than the 7.3 will in it's current state of tune. I just don't think many Superduty owners/buyers would have the faith or experience with the small Ecoboost engines to give them a chance. Again, I'm not saying use it in the max towing models, just like the base engine isn't available rated to tow 35,000 pounds. I have no doubt that it could do just as good towing 15000-18000 as the detuned 7.3 will though. I'm more disappointed because I think it was fear of taking the chance of buyers accepting it that led Ford this route. They stepped out on the ledge for the 3.5 Ecoboost in the F150's and it has worked perfect for them. They sell tons more Ecoboost trucks than 5.0 models with customers paying a large premium to do it. My 2011 F150 cost $1100 to upgrade to the 3.5. now it's several times that and they sell every one they build. I think they missed a chance to revolutionize the heavy duty market the same way they did the half tons ten years ago. I think we missed our chance to be looking back in 2030 wondering how we ever made it without smaller displacement forced induction V8's in the heavy duty trucks. Ford has more experience with forced induction than anyone from Lightning's to mustangs and F150. If someone else does it first we very well may have a new leader in heavy duty sales in ten years. I think it has more chance of working out than electric in that time. Anyways, thanks for the reply and happy holidays!

@@boduke9428 How much of that towing is highway and what speeds do you personally tow at? If your truck stays in 5th gear now, the 10 speed won't make a noticable difference in fuel economy. Did you get the 4.10 on your 2016 or the 3.55? Cost for the 7.3 is shared all the way up to their F-650/750. I honestly don't believe a 5L EcoBoost would appeal to those customers as it would always be on boost so economy would suffer. One major issue that the customer doesn't see is the reliability testing. A heavy duty 3.5 would have to have a compacted iron graphite block just like the 2.7 l EcoBoost does, it would get pretty heavy pretty quickly. Then you have to deal with the carbon deposits, the fact that in a HD application the oil would have to be changed every 5k miles (fleets tend to use whatever is cheapest that is in spec). Fleets care about downtime, and maintenance costs. GM has more forced induction experience than Ford does, hell every midsize and large car they sold in the early 2000's had a supercharger option. GM ran away from that because creating a strong enough 5-speed auto to handle the torque numbers simply didn't work and then they came out the "high feature v6". the 7.3 was designed with two things in mind first the design is based on the correct displacement amount to ensure it can hold a 14.7:1 ratio while loaded to be as efficient as possible. Then long term durability. I'm going to say something extremely controversial but has been proven true over and over again. If you are not buying a dually there is no reason whatsoever to get a modern Diesel. Without the dually you can't tow amounts that the gas can't. $9,000 in fuel goes a very long way, maintenance costs if you follow the manufacturer's specifications for your vehicle and the way that you use it gets insane. Both fuel filters need to be replaced every other oil change or if you tow at gcwr then you have to be replace at 15000 miles/6 months/600 engine hours, Every 60k miles the coolant has to be flushed and replaced (both loops). The 7.3 does not require any of that. Fuel, currently at least, is approximately $0.50 more per gallon though that's going to depend on where you live and their fuel economy when they are actually loaded and worked is only about 2 MPG better than the gas motors. as far as longevity Ford says approximately 250K miles under ideal conditions for the diesel particulate filter. That's a $5k+ replacement. I love a good diesel when pulling they are astonishing. But unless you're pulling over 20,000 lbs they sadly just don't make sense. Sorry for all of the spec ovomit I've been considering dabbling in hotshotting and it's a lot easier to justify the 7.3. than the 6.7 if I don't go dually. (I do all my own work so thankful your labor cost doesnt need to be considered, however Part cost is very important.) Happy holidays to you too Note: since deleting emissions equipment is a felony and you risk your vehicle being confiscated, deletion is not a consideration for me in any way shape or form. And if you get caught commercially hauling with emissions modifications you are going to be in for an extraordinarily rough time.

@@KoolCordell I tow at the speed limit (70mph or less) with the toyhauler or anything over 10-12k on the gooseneck. My foot gets heavier if I've just got the Jeep or a couple side by sides on the conventional trailer. The truck is in 6th most always. I have the 3.55's currently I have a single wheel but I've had everything from 250's to 550's and as crazy as it sounds I go for the highest rear gear available. I've found the lower gears like the 4:88 in the 550 keeps the engine to high in the power band at highway speed to pull hills. The higher gears keep it closer to that higher torque rolling down the highway. I know it comes at the cost of harder acceleration but modern diesels aren't hurting for power. I agree the diesel isn't mandatory but I do love the effortless feel it has. I am not going to use my personal truck for hotshot either way. It's too much work to take it back to stock to make it suitable. I live in a state with no emissions testing at all or any type inspections so it's pretty safe around here running around deleted. I'm probably going the Enterprise route. That's kinda why I'm upset about the 7.3 power numbers. It could be perfect for hotshot for all the reasons you named. It's cheap enough to be treated as disposable and maintenance is so much less. I'm just not a believer that 475 ft lb is enough to bee grossing 26k plus. I remember the days of sub 500 ft lb from 1990's era diesels and how bad it was towing moderate loads with them. I have to many memories of getting the biggest possible run at even slight grades. Hitting the hill at 70-75 and topping it at 40-50 and that was with less than 15 thousand behind it. I just feel like with those low numbers even with the 10 speed that engine is going to be screaming at the slightest incline. You are very correct about the engine being shared with the larger trucks and my V8 Ecoboost not being ideal for those applications. I hadn't considered that. I still think there is a market for it. Like I said, the half tons get 4 choices and it all works out for Ford. They could use my engine in the Raptor and a new Lightning and recoup the money. I just believe where there is a will there is a way and am disappointed Ford didn't take the leap like they did with the 3.5. If you pull the trigger and do hotshot with a 7.3 I hope it works out awesome and you change my mind. Make us some videos if so, I'd love to know how it works out and would definitely tune in to follow along. Best of luck in the coming year. I very much appreciate the cordial back and forth.
