@dragon81heart4 жыл бұрын
Hopefully you guys keep it more of a work truck than anything. Also you should try to find a turbo for it as Ford themselves put a turbo on it for its last year before the Powerstroke came out (and actually had a very restrictive downpipe on it to keep it from making more power than the upcoming 7.3 Powerstroke, and even underrated the power output of it as it had about 30 more HP and 65 more foot pounds of torque than Ford said lol Ford really wanted the attention to be on the upcoming Powerstroke but in some ways the turbo IDI was a better engine lol) We had one brand new back in 1993 and it was such an incredible engine. Ford sourced the turbo from ATS but did do a few other modifications to the base 7.3 IDI such as better valves and pistons. The factory turbo IDI 7.3 was the pinnacle of the 6.9/7.3 IDI engines, and would out pull even the 5.9 Dodge Cummins at the time (the 6.5 GM turbo diesel didn’t come close to the 7.3 or the 5.9). Hell the turbo IDI would even challenge the 460 and 454 on the highway at sea level, and would easily walk away from them in high elevations. And the down low torque of the turbo IDI the gas engines couldn’t touch LOL So at low speeds the big block gas engines didn’t hold a candle to the turbo diesel Simply put, the factory turbo 7.3 IDI was the best engine in any pickup in 1993, and it’s a shame that many people don’t even know it existed. Such an underrated engine

That rock thing came flying out of there and went over the edge of the world and hasn't been seen since. Well, I was getting hungry and there's no burger king back in time, so I decided to leave the truck there and travel back to our time on my own. After searching the history books and gps coordinates, I Found that sumbitch buried under two tons of debris from the million years of sittin' and wouldn't you know, the damn thing started right up. Dad had an '88 F250 2WD 351 V8 gasser, 5spd manual with HD rear axle and springs. Spent it's early life as a masonry block hauler. Then it ended up on our farm to tow and haul just about everything under the sun. Then it was sold to some guy in a big city who proceeded to hot rod beat the crap out of it. Clutch finally gave out after Mr drag racer dumped 2nd gear smokeys too many times. Only problem we ever had was the ignition coil pack went out once. That was it. Not one single problem otherwise. Tough as nails. Bed beat to death. A little bit or rust around the rear fenders. Nothing else gave issues. Winter, summer, rain, interstate, field, pulling 300 bales on train-hitched racks, field fertilizer wagons, grain carts, scrap iron, machinery, cattle. Never had any issues besides the coil pack.

A million mile motor is nothing significant then or now. A couple videos ago I commented on how I like my 460 big block and some people with agreed & some people said it was a turd. Compared to Modern engine my big block Ford is weaker than most small blocks that come in 1/2 tons but if go back to 1989 which is the same year my truck is versus the 1989 diesel you can see that 460 kind of was the better option back then. Although I actually am a big fan of both the 6.9 and the 7.3 IDI. Also as much as I'd like gas engines, no stock gas engine will out pull a modern diesel. That being said awesome video, the only thing that would have made it cooler as if it was the old big block gas versus the new Big Block gas.

Also in its stock form it was pretty gutless. I've done a little bit of work to increase air flow through the stock air filter system open up the exhaust a lot and I put aggressive timing curve on it and that completely changed the way it felt while driving and actually got it to get better MPG

I'm going to suggest that you need to check the pistons in the disk brake calipers. I had a 1989 F350. The original pistons in the calipers were metal and would transfer heat to the brake fluid under heavy use and you'd lose the brakes. I had that happen between Silverton and Ouray, CO on the descent into Ouray. Quite the thrill going downhill on a twisting mountain road with a Bigfoot camper loaded on the truck, and have the brake pedal go all the way to the floor. The retrofit kit for the brakes had phenolic pistons. My truck was one of the first delivered to the dealer and Ford changed the brakes about 1/2 way through the model year because of the brake problem.
