2020 CTWC is here! Here's a quick explanation of the online format: Players from all over the world had 2-hours to qualify and post their highest scores. Then the top 64 were distributed into 8 separate double elimination brackets labeled as Groups A-H. The winner of each Group went on to compete in the Top 8 on December 6th. Players making it to the Top 8 were reseeded based on their performance in their group, and the final Top 8 bracket reverted to a best-of-five single elimination bracket with players receiving the same piece sequences.
Crew: Streamer - Keith Didion... Judges - Sean Aldas and Chris Foryst... Directors - Vince Clemente and Adam Cornelius... Commentators - Chris Tang and James Chen... Tech Director - Trey Harrison... Interviewer - Arda Ocal

In the 1990 Nintendo World Championship competition, Tetris was the game to beat. The winner, Thor Aackerlund, is still seen by many as the best to have ever played. Today’s Classic Tetris tournaments are played on that same version of Nintendo Tetris, using original NES game systems, controllers, and Tetris cartridges. In 2009, a player named Harry Hong became the first to achieve the highest possible score of 999,999 points. Inspired by this achievement, filmmaker Adam Cornelius produced a short film about Harry called “Max-Out”, and launched a Kickstarter campaign to document the world of competitive Tetris. As word of Adam’s Kickstarter campaign spread, rumors of max-out scores from other Tetris Masters began to surface, threatening the supremacy of Harry’s achievement. With the help of Nintendo World Championship veteran Robin Mihara, Adam searched for all of the Tetris Masters he could find. Jonas Neubauer emerged as an early max-out artist, along with the elusive original champ Thor Aackerlund. The idea of bringing these and other NES Tetris Masters together to compete in a live tournament became an obvious and irresistible proposition which was artfully captured in the 2010 feature length documentary Ecstasy of Order: The Tetris Masters. Under the leadership of producer Vince Clemente, The Classic Tetris World Championship is currently held at the Portland Retro Gaming Expo, an annual event which has hosted the tournament since 2012. Chuck Van Pelt and his organizing committee have built the PRGE into the largest classic gaming expo in the country, drawing around 10,000 attendees. Every year the scores get higher. Rivalries are revisited once again, and new players emerge to challenge the old guard. Over 100 players have maxed out the score now. Will you be the next? ecstasyoforder.com thectwc.com

@Johnny Cash You'd honestly think so, but they seem to have a great relationship with one another. Plus, Andy seems pretty mature with the way he talks about his younger brother. There's a healthy level of respect between the two on camera, so I'm willing to bet it's like that at home to a healthy enough extent and will continue to be that way for years. For a 13 year old and a 15 year old being this fine now, they will probably be fine later, ya know

55:16-55:18 i love that Dog feels guiilty about shyly peeking at the stream to see if his brother is ahead in lines and waiting to hear about line bar droughts. no, it isn't "cheating" :) . it would be the same at the live competition. you would be able to see your opponent's monitor since you sit side by side as well as hearing the commentators mentioning the droughts. this is the same strategy Jonas employed many times over and often mentionined that he didn't mind playing from behind. because he never pushed down and especially if he was against a push down player, he definitely used the news of droughts as a heads up and adjusted his board accordingly
@ArthurSeijiNishikawa
@ArthurSeijiNishikawa 3 жыл бұрын
I agree that it's not cheating, since there's not way to control this, but the situation is a little bit different: when the players are playing next to each other, they can only see their opponent's CRT screen, which doesn't have the long bar drought count.

What made Dog and Andy really stand out in this competition is how insanely *consistent* they are. Maxouts after maxouts. Joseph can hit a higher score but he can be a little too aggressive and inconsistent. It was just unfortunate for Koryan that he came up against Dog and put up one of the greatest fights in CTWC history. I would argue that Jonas remains the best builder but without hypertapping, he is constantly at a slight disadvantage. Dog and Andy are just way too consistently good. Oh and unfortunate for Eric as well who seemed like he had a bit of an off day.
@kn9ght
@kn9ght 3 жыл бұрын
Joseph has 12 maxouts in his qualifier. I would say Joseph is the most consistent player out of all the players in the field right now. Nothing against Huff but Joseph just lost one set, it doesn’t mean Joseph is a worse player. One set doesn’t define a player.
@kaiwei1111
@kaiwei1111 3 жыл бұрын
I definitely agree with you. I reckon he is still the #1 player but knock-out tournaments are just brutal. You can't afford a single off day at all. If it is conducted in a round robin format or 2-legged knock out, Joseph might have won but let's stick to celebrating Dog who actually won the tournament this year!!
@PeterJavi
@PeterJavi 3 жыл бұрын
Eric is a fast tapper, but often too aggressive in tournaments. Joseph was having an off month. Starting at the game against Richard. Dog was not having an off month. Neither in CTWC or CTM and he bloody well knew it. This is dog's month, but we'll see how long he can stay at the top. Competition is brutal and the margins are practically non existent
