At the 2022 CTWC, over 100 Classic Tetris pros gathered at the Portland Retro Gaming Expo to vie for 48 seeds. Qualifying consisted of 2 hour attempts where players would try to rack up as many great scores as possible. In a 48-seed bracket, the Top 16 seeds earn a bye out of Round 0, while the bottom 32-seeds compete for a spot in Round 1.

In the 1990 Nintendo World Championship competition, Tetris was the game to beat. The winner, Thor Aackerlund, is still seen by many as the best to have ever played. Today’s Classic Tetris tournaments are played on that same version of Nintendo Tetris, using original NES game systems, controllers, and Tetris cartridges. In 2009, a player named Harry Hong became the first to achieve the highest possible score of 999,999 points. Inspired by this achievement, filmmaker Adam Cornelius produced a short film about Harry called “Max-Out”, and launched a Kickstarter campaign to document the world of competitive Tetris. As word of Adam’s Kickstarter campaign spread, rumors of max-out scores from other Tetris Masters began to surface, threatening the supremacy of Harry’s achievement. With the help of Nintendo World Championship veteran Robin Mihara, Adam searched for all of the Tetris Masters he could find. Jonas Neubauer emerged as an early max-out artist, along with the elusive original champ Thor Aackerlund. The idea of bringing these and other NES Tetris Masters together to compete in a live tournament became an obvious and irresistible proposition which was artfully captured in the 2010 feature length documentary Ecstasy of Order: The Tetris Masters. Under the leadership of producer Vince Clemente, The Classic Tetris World Championship is currently held at the Portland Retro Gaming Expo, an annual event which has hosted the tournament since 2012. Chuck Van Pelt and his organizing committee have built the PRGE into the largest classic gaming expo in the country, drawing around 10,000 attendees. Every year the scores get higher. Rivalries are revisited once again, and new players emerge to challenge the old guard. Over 100 players have maxed out the score now. Will you be the next? ecstasyoforder.com thectwc.com

I cannot wait to watch this final, this will be a clash of titans for sure, both have made major improvements over the past year, dog put up a good fight but the level of competition is just so much fiercer than what he’s had to go up against before, I hope that doesn’t discourage him though but makes him even hungrier to get his title back next year

Gotta respect dog's aggressiveness on level 29. Something's gonna have to be done, entertainment value drops 1000% when players try to line out past 29 rather than play more aggressive. Also way more impressive landing triples or even tetrises past 29 than just going for single cause it's the easy way.

@@durteedan7836 It's definitely one solution, but simultaneously I don't think players who manage to play aggressively should be prohibited to continue, so long term I don't think a line cap is a good enough solution - although it definitely would be now, as you'd very rarely see anyone score tetrises consistently for that long past 29

Great match and respect to Eric. But I think lining out till infinity makes it less entertaining. The game needs an end maybe on Line 260 or so like running a marathon it ends after 42 kilometers and its not about who runs widest. Maybe we could see more playstyles and the players needs to keep up high the efficiency. Also missing green tea, jd, koryan and so on - hope to see them next year although the young guns do a great job. RIP Jonas nice to see that the community dont forget about him

There is an ELO-system with world rankings based on results in tournaments and Classic Tetris monthlies. Joseph is 10th, Koryan is like 24th, and old timers like Harry Hong and Green Tea aren't even ranked anymore. Rollers and new young guns have taken over.

I've been playing modern Tetris on my phone (which is not ideal with touch screen of course), and I was wondering something: is there a reason that players seem to keep the right well clear? I only ask because in the relatively brief time I've been playing, it feels more natural to me to keep the left side clear. Is this because I'm left-handed? Is it something I should correct if I hope to compete?

Whats with the controiier tickling glove?
@wingfryer

The Glove is used to reduce the friction between the hand and controller. They are using a technique called Rolling. aGameScout explains it in his video kzbin.info/www/bejne/pF6li2hjhplroqc

What exactly happened with Joseph “GreenTea” and Quaid?

Joseph is focused on college, GreenTea is likely still working on Tetris Effect: Connected, and Quaid is…I’m not sure.

The players are using a technique called Rolling. They roll their fingers on the back of the controller, so that they push the controller to their other hand. aGameScout has a video on it kzbin.info/www/bejne/pF6li2hjhplroqc

I'm sure this comment will get usual flame. This puts things in perspective for the DAS generation, which was 100% presencial, and still getting big scores with a big crowd looking at them. I noticed the "infinite"-29 play players like Dog, Huff, Andy, Sidnev, didn't go much beyond 1.1m, 1.2m, level 30, 31, 32 and that's it for the apparently "infinite" 29 play. If my comment is not clear enough, look the impact nerves have on you. The DAS generation was entirely under such nervers. The wonder kids are not so invincible as they look. 2 very different things when playing at the comfort of your home, and in front of a roaring crowd.

what is a max out?
@wingfryer
@wingfryer Жыл бұрын
A Maxout is when a player gets a score of 1 Million points. (999,999 to be exact) The score counter maxes out at 999,999. The tournament uses a modified cartridge that adds a 7th digit in the score counter.

Dog is distracted by the crowd. Eric feeds off the crowd. Huge difference.
@jrmaddu1
@jrmaddu1 Жыл бұрын
Nah I don’t think so, it’s just the level of competition is so fierce compared to the past two years, how much eric and fractl have improved in the past year is insane, dog put up a good fight, but eric’s ability to think quicker and play smarter was what defeated dog
@Alvin_Vivian
@Alvin_Vivian Жыл бұрын
@@jrmaddu1 Eric also played a lot more defensively and patiently than Dog. Eric knows "doubles and triples" would outscore "hitting the occasional Tetris but needing to constantly do cleanups due to misdrops trying to build for a Tetris." And he was right.
@jrmaddu1
@jrmaddu1 Жыл бұрын
@@Alvin_Vivian I believe in 2 out of those three games he had a higher pre 29 transition score than dog, which is smart as well, that way he can afford to make doubles and triples in the killscreen. Dog was in a horrible position during post transition where he was having to make tetris’ in order to catch up
@Alvin_Vivian
@Alvin_Vivian Жыл бұрын
@@jrmaddu1 Yup, imagine going into Level 29 at a deficit against Eric. You know you're done for. 😂 Because even a big lead isn't safe against Eric.
@jrmaddu1
@jrmaddu1 Жыл бұрын
@@Alvin_Vivian even then a higher score pre transition doesn’t confirm the win, with how long eric and fractl can survive in killscreen i think dog would’ve been done for either way, either of them could’ve chased the score down if dog happened to be ahead by a huge margin
