Argh. I've to say it again. Great video, great review. Genesis, Hyundai, Kia. Whether they are everybody's cup or tea or not is not the point. I think one thing that subtly comes across from your review is how a car company creates a roadmap and makes a successful go at it. Hyundai came out of left field and kept at it till they got things right enough for their customer base. They brought back Kia from dead. They tweaked the Genesis brand in a similar fashion till it had the foothold it needs and was tailored to the audience they believe will buy it. While I've never owned a Hyundai made car, I've driven thousands of miles on rental ones and I can say, they hit the spot. They did everything I wanted them to do when I had them. I've driven in a friend's previous generation Genesis. Not a car I'd consider buying. But I don't matter. It fits the box that it needs to fit for its buyers and tremendously satisfies those buyers. The price to value factor that Hyundai, Kia, Genesis offer is absolutely tops. I give 6 out of 5 stars to Hyundai (Kia & Genesis by extension).

Just to provide some anecdotal insight, I saw the Genesis lienup at the Chicago auto show and I gotta say, it was pretty crowded. I was surprised. The GV80 and G90 were getting a lot of attention, and they were actually pulling people away from nearby luxury brands. Talking and listening to some of the people around, the middle aged group was genuinely impressed with design and quality of these cars. Families were surrounding the GV80. Dads were gandering at the G80 and G70. Quite a few younger guys were crowded around the G70s too. The design and quality, once I saw it and felt it in person, was really surprising. Genesis is clearly doing something right here. I initially disliked the G90 styling but after seeing it in person, I was really surprised at how elegant and nice they looked. They've got good momentum. With a better dealer network and better customer service, they have so much potential. Just my 2 cents

I even like the gauges, because they're clean and simple and have good contrast, unlike those shitty digital gauges most cars have these days.
@Dirtyboxer14 жыл бұрын
I like simple cars too, which is why the Tacoma and 4Runner appeal to me. I currently drive a '19 Kia Optima S, which has more features than I use. Some new features I really love, such as side view, forward, and backup cameras, lane departure warning, and adaptive cruise control. I really don't want to drive a car without those features ever again. Some things are nice to have and I would expect on an expensive car, such as heated/ventilated front and rear seats. Where cars start to impress me is in overall build quality, fit and finish, choice of materials. I expect power, quick throttle and brake responsiveness, and accurate steering with minimum dive or body roll. I also expect a quiet cabin. My Optima fails in several of those categories, but since I just paid it off, I'm willing to live with its imperfections while I save up for a better car, perhaps a Genesis.

Honestly, no one will pull a Lexus at least in the foreseeable future. No one will build a whole new platform, with a whole new engine that will last forever, in a product that takes 7-8 years and 8 competing engineering teams to come up with that STILL won't turn profit in the 3-5 upcoming years. The overall risk, the time consumption, the economic battering (at first) that Toyota took with the whole project was something that only a company the size of Toyota or Coca-Cola could take and it was done at the time when companies were willing to take those sort of chances.

Two things of note: 1) It's true that Genesis doesn't offer those "extra rear seat luxury options", but you won't be getting those on the other flagship sedans either unless you option them with the ultra-pricey add-ons and packages that take the vehicles well over $100K territory. Most of them in their base forms don't even come with the standard features of a Genesis G80 (i.e. adaptive cruise control), nevermind the 90. A huge advantage of the Genesis vehicles is that they have few option packages and are generally loaded out the factory- can't say the same about any of the German brands that nickel and dime stupid things like a heated steering wheel. 2) The depreciation of Genesis is wildly overstated. While they don't hold their values as well as Lexus (no luxury brand does), they're far better than the likes of any of the European brands and even Japanese brands such as Infiniti. People simply think they "depreciate more" than other brands because they don't realize that the MSRP of the vehicles was originally far cheaper than the competition to begin with. Know that both a G80 and Audi A6 from 3 years ago both selling for $22K now doesn't take into account that the G80 was around $42K originally while the Audi was over $60K (for a V6 trim- also standard on the base model G80) BEFORE options.

The resale value for these is actually getting better I actually work at a dealership where we sell Genesis and we won't buy them at auction because they're too expensive. They typically go for high $30k and after having to certify them, we would have to retail them for around $40-43k. So resale values are right on par with the rest of the competitors. At 9:53, we hear the big selling point for this car: value. But, and not trying to sound like a German fanboy, the question I have is: what does value mean? If value means a cheaper MSRP, then sure, that's true. However, the G90's German rivals continuously are discounted 15-20%. And, maybe more importantly, around 60-70% of luxury vehicles are leased. With leasing in mind, Genesis has horrendous residual value and money factor compared to rivals like BMW. Beyond that, while the Genesis warranty is fantastic, the dealer network is terrible. Reading Genesis forums, many dealers don't even participate in the service that drives to your house. You're just stuck in an average Hyundai dealer. At the end of the day, if this car is 20K cheaper but leases the same as an S Class, why wouldn't I just get an S-Class?

why is it, that many automakers , make a pretty good looking vehicle and then DESTROY it with a F**KING mega mouth grill that consumes 75%+ of the front end of the car! The rest of this car looks pretty good and that grill is vomit inducing!

Do you think the new G80 will cannibalize this? It's smaller but looks better inside and out and has latest tech, not to mention cheaper. A little strange they released them so close together
@tjk92634 жыл бұрын
I have to say Genesis has killed it with the new design of their sedans and especially their SUV the GV80 which IMO next to Land Rover's is the best looking SUV on the market.

People will say , hey it's cheaper that's why you don't get some of the luxury, yea but they are still going after the Germans and lexus either way they will be compared. I'd still just buy a Lexus LS

As the owner of a G70, I would add one thing about Genesis as a luxury brand: they still have a LONG way to go in term of dealer experience. I really live my G70 and wanted it because it combined everything I wanted in a 4 door rwd car but trying to find one and buying it requested dedication. Dealers are atrocious and pull all the cheap tricks. It was a letdown after owning a BMW for many years

Same, the k900 is more of a sleeper. The g90 is just a bit over styled, but still not as bad as the other luxury sedans.

Few things. 1: it will struggle because of their dealership set up. 2: It’s a great deal. 3: It will also struggle because of perception. People have to be “excited” for the brand. That’s why there’s always some form of halo car or performance.

Yep just reinforcing my statement by saying that the genesis g80(in Australia were don't have any other model except the g80 3.8 ONLY-also it's THE BASE MODEL 3.8 not v8 5.0 either and it's just called genesis with OUT the g80 tag, now my point is the cost of that vehicle before taxes in Aus is $80k A.u.d- TOO EXPENSIVE !!!- (we have 50% luxury car tax for ANY vehicle over $45,500 as well), so people are saying on car forums that it should be no more than $50k aud maximum otherwise what's the point in buying it, everybody inside the car on the street will be perceived by others as a bunch of tightasses- and don't say that people buy cars for themselves not to impress others, because at any price point image is every- thing!!! ,except at the very, very entry level 3 cylinder vehicles that are the very basic of cars that are pretty much fazed out of the car market now ,e.g; daihatsus' little hatchbacks, that were designed in the early 60s'.

Damn fine car inside and out. But seriously don't know why it doesn't have massagers.
@geethsan15674 жыл бұрын
Perhaps they have the notion that it's something that would make it unreliable over years. It seems like, Genesis wants this car to last atleast 10 years, hence the 10 year warranty on these things. But yes, seat massagers should've been thrown in as it's literally found in every other full size lux cars atleast as an option.
@thisismagacountry13184 жыл бұрын
Massagers are only worthwhile if they have a happy ending.
@bobkilla4304 жыл бұрын
@@geethsan1567 Interesting take. I always thought the long warranty was a good selling point. At least from 2013, the Hyundai Equus had massaging seats and almost sure comes with the same warranty.

If this had a Lexus badge, the review would have been much more favorable. Simplicity and value. Would take this over the LS all day. Way better tech and a great NA V8. Biggest negative is the terrible, terrible Hyundai dealerships

Honestly they could really capitalize on that if they wanted. Show a bunch of new money elites in a high rise office comparing textures of their business cards like Patrick Bateman, then show the smart dude that bought a better luxury car with better warranty for less.

Even if price was no factor, I would buy the 90 before a Benz or BMW. Not going to lie, I do love Audi as well so this or a A8 would be a difficult decision. I own a Genesis 2015 which is now called the G80, and I fell in love with that car immediately. Been looking to trade in for quite a long time and still can't pull the trigger, that's how much I love that car. The first cars people look at when they have money is Benz, BMW to let other people know they have money. Sadly, that's exactly why I would NEVER buy a Benz or BMW. Not that I have money like that, it's just the point that I don't want put in that lane with THOSE PEOPLE! I know Benz and BMW are great vehicles, but the persona that comes from the people I much more relate to is a label i dont want to be connected with. Hyundai/Kia/Genesis gave me a car I wanted with the G80. When my friends first got in and asked what kind of car it was and I told them it's a Hyundai, they couldn't believe it. Many said they thought it was a Caddy, or Mercedes. I have ( associates who buy BMW and Mercedes, and when they get a new car and show up at a golf outing, you can see that personality come out of them that's a huge turn off. They act as if it's no big deal but cant shut the F up about every detail all the way down to the negotiating with the salesman. I hope to make more money in my life one day, but I'll NEVER be that person or will allow my wife to become

Another articulate and enlightening video of a luxury saloon. Viewing the video gave me a Proustian moment of my youth in those Cadillac days. Driving my '64 Cadillac was a joy as you soak up the wide open spaces, driving across this beautiful nation. It was before all these photo radar, DWI laws, seat belts tickets -and other revenue raising tickets - we have today. Lot less traffic back then. Agree that the best deal on the G90 , is to buy a 2-3 yrs old ones. Also, Kia is making some nice vehicles, too. The Telluride SUV is selling well. Kia and Hyundai does a good job on the interior, features and design. Toyota and Honda could learn something be looking how they do their interiors, appointments and features of their vehicle. They are more than four wheels and an engine. The Koreans are making some nice vehicles today compared to yesterday years.

You ask: "At *this* point in time, how many people are going to choose Genesis over an Audi, a BMW, an LS ... ?" I would say that the pandemic has lightened the wallets of more than a few executives. That stock portfolio isn't quite as fluffy as it was a few short weeks ago, and my guess is that luxury car budgets and expectations are being re-calibrated as I type.

So, to get a comparable S-Class, you’ll fork over $142k, $115k for a 740i xdrive, $110k for an A8 and $90k for an LS460 ! Yes the G90 doesn’t have this or that feature but how many people do we see driving a base model MB or BMW with halogen headlights and pleather seats, just to “show off” ! I think the G90 is a great value and I know Genesis is taking notes on the next G90 !

Great review. I'd keep in mind that Genesis is still building up its brand; is is a Lexus/Infity in its infancy. Design-wise, I think it is very elegant and some areas are just plain beautiful -- but that's only my subjective opinion. Having said that, buyers these days are more persuade-able and easily put off by brands in general, including luxury brands, by stupid shit and unnecessary/frivolous options or the lack thereof. Two examples I can vouche for are clients of mine who switched from BMW and Audi to Genesis because they figured that the reliability of Genesis' products has not only "evened-out" with their former premium brand vehicles but on some cases surpassed them. Also, repair costs was an issue as both of my clients dealt with astronomical repair bills when out of warranty, especially for the A8. As a matter of fact, the client who currently owns a 2016 G8 already put a deposit on a 2021 GV80 and his wife wants the just released G80. I think once the G90 goes through a full transition instead of a refresh, it'll be more up to par with its premium brand vehicles it aims to compete.
