I've got a 2020 3500 AT4 and the transmission is leaking... 9,000 miles!! I called my local dealer on 4/19 and they said they can't get it in until May 10th. I took it to another dealership on 4/23 and they said," yea the transmission is leaking but we don't have any loaner vehicles and it will take at least 2-3 days to tear it apart and diagnose where the leak is." They also said that parts availability is scarce and it took them 35 days to get a marker light! Also at 8,000 miles I got a check engine light and had a bad NOx sensor. What great QUALITY and service GM!!

I was once a GM truck owner in denial. I seemed to always look for excuses for my satisfaction with my truck although it was falling apart early in it's life. The 2004s had super cheap & cheesy interiors, steering clunks & noises...oh and gauge clusters that went out way to often. Eventually I bought a Toyota and now am on my 2nd Ram and have never been back to GM.

For people who have never worked at a dealership service department, and be very thankful you didn't. These things happen to any brand. I have replaced engines, transmissions, Entire wire harnesses, and anything you can think of on vehicles with less then 500 miles on them. They produce thousands of vehicles everyday with tens of thousands of parts in them. Shit is bound to f up every now and then. Still sucks when it happens to you but never the less it happenes

That's an interesting take from an industry insider....so - based on your experience, is it better for a guy to buy a brand new rig with the full factory warranty, or one that's 2-3 years old with limited warranty remaining? 🤔

Manufacturers are in a never ending race with competitors to make the best vehicle. So yes, nowadays if all you need is a new trans and a fuel injectors swap you came out pretty good. I payed for the extra warranty myself to cover the trans in my ram when it blows. Trucks are like Sig Sauer handguns, they make a great product after the public trial testing is done.

I have zero faith in my local GM dealer's ability to diagnose or repair any issues with my late model Impala. They couldn't even be bothered to check fluid levels during my oil changes. When my transmission started shifting a little weird they had it for 5 days trying to figure it out until they were told by GM to check the fluid level and was 3 quarts low. I guess that's a little on me but I was taking it to them religiously for service. Thanks PowerNation! This was at 35k miles and they never even filled my wiper fluid or suggested a cabin air filter or air filter.

This is a problem that's only going to get worse...I don't send back a poorly cooked steak to be redone, I don't rely on a tech who's been trained to just look at the scanner screen...I don't rely on a doctor who is busy typing while explaining your pain management...There are good mechanics out there, and some may have chosen the security and relative comfort of working at a dealership...But you'll never get to meet them and hear what they have to say about anything. If you have a vehicle you like, hold on to it and learn what you can to maintain it then find a good mechanic for the big stuff. In the end these vehicles are the second largest investments you'll make...And if you look at just the numbers they may even be costing more than your house... just sayin....

Mine went in for squeaky brakes three times, even though there are at least two tsbs on it - the GM dealership told me that they are working as designed. The leaky window was again, working as designed. The front shocks went out, so I replaced them all with bilstein 5100s. The towing issues with the various electrical issues are "working as designed, or can't reproduce the problem". I love towing 9k without electric brakes. I have ZERO faith in GM dealerships, as I have taken this truck to THREE separate ones. The techs don't seem to know what they are doing. Heads up, the techs at the GM Dealerships still can't figure out that there are 9 fittings that they ARE SUPPOSED to put grease in them. Even after they told me they did, over and over again, guess what - they were all bone dry.

Regarding what you said about complaints spreading faster then good reviews if that’s the case why do so many people have so many greet things to say about Tundras and why do so little people have anything bad to say? They have the best resale value for a reason cause they’re made well, Its the only truck known to last up to 1,000,000 miles and is the most reliable truck you can buy. Issues happen with all makes and models, in my opinion its how the manufacturer/dealership wants to handle the issues that come up that matters. I had a 2019 F250 that at 4,000 miles had to have 2 recalls fixed AND steering dampener/tie rod bushings replaced that was causing the death wobble effect. They took care of it no questions, sadly the issue and others continued to pop up every 5 to 8,000 miles until I had had enough of it and had them buy it back at 42k miles. I now own a 2500 Duramax AT4 and compared to the ford its night and day.

My 2002 Silverado Z71 had the same problem, irritating clunking noise. I replaced the intermediate shaft and it was good for about a year, then the noise came back. GM has an ungraded part # 19153614 that is suppose to be a permanent repair for the noise problem. I installed the new part 2 years ago and so far so good. The noise can also be caused by a bearing under the dash at the base of the steering column, the thing is plastic and has a tendency to fail and allow the shaft to wobble.

Just a couple of things, your fuel economy probably is more due to the taller tires and not registering the correct mileage, and if you ever need to tow a enclosed trailer you're going to need to have those mirrors to see around it, you shouldn't have any problem with the mirrors that you installed towing a open trailer with a pickup truck on it

i am a 20 yr heavy equipment mechanic. i work on my own stuff. BUT the problem is, if you don't have the dealer computer - or something similar, your STUCK! wife has a 2015 acadia. with 67k miles. 3 MONTHS outside of the 5yr/100k powertrain warranty, i get a torque slippage code. the torque was not slipping, the car ran fine. but my wife needs the car everyday, so i gotta fix it.... took it to gm, they said put new trans in it, $5k!!! i asked the dealer what they did to test it, they said their seen a couple of metal shavings in the oil - bullshit- i changed the oil the week prior - there was no metal in it, the fluid looked brand new! - i spent the next WEEK on the phone with GM - not the dealer- to figure out what they could / would do. the best thing they came up with was to let the dealership remove and disassemble the trans to determine the problem, and IF they found a defect, they would THEN determine how much of the bill they would cover. FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFuck YOU!!! i got a reman trans from street smart transmssions.com for $2k shipped to door. i put it in myself, runs great! GM sure HATES its customers!!! get all the warranty you can, and prepare yourself for a fight if you EVER plan to use it! edit: after i put the reman trans in, i had to flatbed the car to a dealership to have them program it. $120 NO WAY AROUND THAT! so they got $120, hell of a lot less than $5k!!! 🤮🤮🤮🤮

@@stevetassie5479 Allison doesn’t actually make the new heavy duty 10 speed behind the L5P Duramax . I am not sure how involved they were, if at all, in the design. It was co-designed by Ford and GM, just like the lighter duty 10 speed in the F150, mustang, Camaro and some GM half ton trucks. I think the detailed literature from GM says the new heavy duty 10 speed is “Allison approved or Allison endorsed” or something like that. I have a 2021 F250 Powerstroke with the Ford version of the trans called the 10R140 and I love it. But Ford has had some problems with their version as well. I had a 2019 Ram 3500 Cummins with the Aisin which was my 5th Cummins truck. I loved Cummins and the Ram, but I had terrible experience with the Aisin. It didn’t break on me but it shifted like a 1980’s school bus. It made the truck very slow because it shifted so slow. It also shifted erratically and would jerk, lurch and seemed to get stuck between 1st and 2nd gear at slow speeds in parking lots. Anyway, all three brands, Ford, GM and Ram, have some issues unfortunately these days.

Hmn? I wonder if swapping wheel/tire sizes back and forth messes up the trans? I mean, in the old days it didn't matter, but, the new trucks are so high tech. Maybe even a 1/2" of tire profile messes up the computer? Only saying this as I was watching another two channels, where their GMC's had the exact same transmission symptoms, and they both had swapped tire sizes a couple of times. 3% difference seems like nothing but these days we are measuring mpg to 1/10 of a gallon accuracy, so, to the computer 3% is an incredible margin of error.

Very very plausible theory. The wheel act as a flywheel if you think about it. Mass is spinning around and the transmission was meant for a smaller wheel and tire package, therefore the bigger wheel or tire would alter the flywheel effect, potentially causing some compensation tolerances to be out of wack. But I’m not an engineer.

I had a 2006 Silverado 3500 hd and when I had my Allison transmission oil changed at the prescribed mileage I drove 1/2 mile down the road and it banged in and out of gear so hard it locked up the duallys. Then it seemed ok and pulling away from a light it did it again and again. Sometimes really hard sometimes not. Went back and they flushed and replaced fluid again. The dealer drove it for 20 minutes and everything was fine. I went on a trip 5 hours away towing a trailer and it happened again . Found a local dealer who opened up the transmission and took it all apart removing a lot of solenoid valves. Showed me a sample of the fluid they removed and ran through a filter and it had lots of grit the size of sand. That caused the valves to not cycle properly when the computer in the transmission signaled it too. It took 2 days to do all that and $5000! Ran perfectly for the rest of the time I had it. The dealer was great in showing me everything they did but not covered under warranty . No one knows how it got in there but there was no issues with that truck after that.

That's a nice truck, I like the AT4s. My personal opinion, I prefer the stock AT4 wheels over the Methods but that's just my taste. I considered a GMC 2500 with the Duramax but I ended up getting a Ram 2500 Cummins Mega Cab Laramie with the Night Edition package and overall I love it. I kinda wish Ram would have added a 8 or 10 speed trans by now but I'm averaging 16mpg in town which is a little better then the GMC 1500 5.3 I traded in and the '20 Suburban my wife drives so I'm happy with it. One thing to bear in mind with the power-train warranty, it will only cover the mechanical engine parts not the electronics, so for example if you crap another injector or an ECU it wont be covered. I ran into that on my '16 GMC 1500. I ended up getting a check engine light, they pulled the codes and said it was one or more injectors was bad, turned out it was 2. The compressive was expired but I still had the power train warranty, unfortunately they told me that it only covered the mechanical engine parts, you would think it would cover everything needed to make it drive but that's not the case. Luckily I bought an extended warranty when I got the truck and that covered it, otherwise it would have been about $700-800 out of my pocket. The power train did cover a leaking coolant line and a couple of other things they found so that was nice.

Lol never heard of anyone taking off tow mirrors on a truck designed to tow, ohh well 90% of trucks arent used for any serious work or towing anyways .

That Allison was the best feature of GM trucks. Moving away from it was a mistake imo.

Interestingly, your trans issues and those that the Ford guys are experiencing are exact and do occur between 30-50k miles, insanely low for an HD truck. Some are pretty mild like yours, and some experience complete valve body failure where there are only 2-3 gears available. And injector failures this early don't bode well for the remaining 6. I would've really strongly asked for them all to be replaced. Still, this is one beautiful truck man!
