You might need to squint to tell the difference between a 2020 Honda Accord Hybrid and the other models in the Accord lineup. The only visual cues that this version is the one rated to get 48 mpg in combined driving are the “Hybrid” badges on the fenders and trunk lid and the aerodynamic 17-inch aluminum wheel designs.
The Hybrid’s 2.0-liter 4-cylinder and two-motor hybrid powertrain supplies 212 combined horsepower and 232 lb-ft of instantaneous electric-motor torque. There is, however, a 200-ish-pound weight penalty with the Accord Hybrid, helping to erase any potential improvement in acceleration times.
Nevertheless, the Accord Hybrid is plenty speedy, scooting to 60 mph quickly enough to lead the typical pack of commuters away from a traffic light and down a freeway on-ramp. This is especially true if you engage the Sport driving mode, which makes the Accord Hybrid instantly more responsive to inputs. The downside to a heavy foot on the accelerator pedal is a loud and steady drone from the car’s electronic continuously variable transmission (eCVT). Still, given the gas mileage, this racket is easier to accept than it would be in a traditional car.
You won’t compromise passenger space or trunk room in order to benefit from the Accord Hybrid’s fuel-sipping nature. This electrified version of the car has the same full-size interior and trunk that make the standard Accord such an appealing family sedan.
Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard, along with satellite radio, HD Radio, basic HondaLink services, and quick-charge USB ports. With EX-L trim, the system adds the previously mentioned premium sound system. Touring upgrades the setup with navigation, HD digital traffic data, a wireless smartphone charger, Near Field Communication (NFC) technology, a WiFi hotspot, and expanded HondaLink service plans.
Based on EPA ratings, if gas costs $2.50 per gallon and you drive 15,000 miles per year, you’ll save $355 annually (almost $500 in a high-cost state like California or Hawaii). That means it will take 4.5 years for the Accord Hybrid’s powertrain to pay for itself (3.2 years in Cali or the Aloha State). And if you choose Touring trim, you’ll actually save yourself $960 from the get-go and then $355 annually.

I just purchased a 2020 Accord Hybrid Touring model, so far very impressed. I find the CarGurus review to be spot on, and agree with Chris' statements. I don't find the need to "punch it" in order to navigate traffic, thus the drone Chris describes is somewhat irrelevant; under most circumstances the car will have plenty of power in normal and sport mode to accelerate and get in to traffic; thus I don't see the average person punching it to experience the drone. Plus it's something commonly experienced with 4 cylinders when pushed hard, there's no replacement for displacement. I've gone from a 4 door Accord to a Camaro, to a 2 door Accord V6, to a Mustang GT Premium, and now back to a 4 door Accord. Yes I had a mid-life crisis! I had to get out of the Mustang though, too impractical for an everyday driver. I was looking at SUVs, 4 door trucks, and other cars/hybrids. I purchased my 2020 Touring for $ 32,500, which I consider a very good deal. A Camry SE Hybrid was about the same price. The Touring Hybrid is a very refined car.. the interior is the nicest I've seen on an Accord, truly to a luxury car level. The space, driving characteristics, price and fuel economy are hard to beat with this ride. I'm getting used to all the technology but like it thus far. The main negative are those ugly 17" wheels, likely the reason the hybrid is cheaper than the 2.0T Touring model. I wish it had 18" or 19" wheels without the ugly grey flares or whatever you call them. Give me some black/polished spoke style please, ugh. Wrapping up, I suggest anyone in the market for a spacious, quality vehicle check out the Hybrid Touring. Ask yourself if you really need an SUV after sitting in this car. You get luxury car features in the front and back, including heated seats, USB ports all around, vents in the back, cup holders, a top-notch infotainment system, and (fingers crossed) Honda reliability. Worth noting, I feel Honda has one of the best factory paint jobs. I haver the pearl white which is very nice, and Honda has a thick clearcoat.. you can see the thickness of the clearcoat. Compare it to a Ford/Chevy/Korean paint job.. you can see the difference. Plus, Honda uses galvanized bolts in and under the car. Ever see the undercarriage of a Ford after a couple years? Even in southern states.. rusty bolts, not cool. Honda builds a quality car, check it out. Cheers..

To clarify, I'm referring to fairly new cars that use non galvanized steel bolts, non-stainless exausts, etc. These components will corrode faster than their galvanized/stainless counterparts found on higher quality vehicles. As to my experience working on cars, I grew up poor in Detroit, and worked on rusty POS vehicles at age 14 and up. I was under cars before you were most likely..

Bought my new base trim 2019 hybrid model a year ago for just under $21k (basically inventory price). 30k miles and never taken it to the shop for anything other than an oil change and tire rotation. If you're able to get a good deal like me, than hands down its a steal imo

I have a 19 touring hybrid, summer months I can get 53mpg driving sensibly. Winter months I struggle to get 40mpg. Overall very pleased with everything about the car. The biggest surprise was the fact it was 1000$ cheaper than the turbo.

I've driven hybrids for around 6 years now. First a Camry for two years, and the past 4 in a Chevy Malibu hybrid, which I like a lot better than the Toyota. They quit making the Malibu hybrid, so I know I need to go to a different car when I finally decide to get a new one. The Accord looks good, with almost 30 more HP than the Chevy. To get good mileage you need to know how your car works. It took me about a couple of months driving to find the sweet driving spot for both of them. Remember, the car won't get good mileage until the engine warms up. In my Malibu that's around four miles around town. If you never drive more than that you will get bad mileage. It takes about 8 miles of driving to get optimum results. Don't jackrabbit start or smoke the tires while stopping. Use regenerative braking to max things out, so start slowing down early for red lights. (By the way, why do people speed like maniacs towards red lights only to stop and let me catch up?) In good weather I can get around 45mph around town without too much effort. I live in Arizona, so the mileage drops when it gets over 100, but the Camry was nasty at those temps, refusing to go into electric mode until it was 25mph or below.

@@RAJ-uo3gb We do like this car overall, but that's correct: I'm actually running from about 37 mpg to about 41 mpg in the city, with the car set on "econ" mode. That higher end is possible only if I'm extremely careful and conscience of how I'm accelerating, etc. I asked about this at the dealership last month when in for an oil change, and the service tech said I was doing good: He gets low 30s. Honda's gas mileage claim does indeed appear to be misleading.

I just picked up an EXL Hybrid. Agree on the engine drone while accelerating to high speed, but that can be mitigated by turning on the 10 speaker, 450 watt stereo.

I got the 1.5T touring last January. The only reason I didn’t get the hybrid was that I could not price match another dealership as they had the touring for27K instead of 36k! I was able to save almost 10 K which was amazing! Also I did not like the wheels on the hybrid wish they had the regular 19 inch wheels on the hybrid

I bought one of this 2019 Touring trim I’m happy 99% each time I drove this car, except 1 complained go up hill engines loud noise just like review guy said and everything else very nice and comfortable car to drive, occasionally I got 49 or 50 mpg, but mostly I got 45 or 46.8 mpg.

Our(Edmund's)2018 Honda Accord EX-L stickered for $30,865, including destination. Over the course of a year, we added 13,302 miles to our odometer. In this condition, the Edmunds TMV Calculator valued the Accord at $23,815 based on a private-party sale. That works out to 22.8% depreciation, which is slightly worse than the fleet average of 22% average. The depreciation level is even worse when you consider that the majority of our cars pass the 20,000-mile mark. Edmund's longterm Accord

Good overall review. I have the 2018 hybrid Touring. I love the car. Two things on mpg. First yes you can get 50 mpg (typically 45-50) in town which is nice. Second is you will not get the stated highway mpg at what I call true highway speeds of 75 mph. It will consistently get around 40-42 mpg. The reason is the gas engine is running pretty much full time. If you reduce your speed (and likely get rear ended) down to 55 you can probably gain another 5 mpg. In sport mode I love the response and handling and you can easily get the same milage once you learn how to drive in that mode. Test drive the car in sport mode and you’ll buy it! In any event I really love the car. The acceleration is brisk. With the electric motor the acceleration is instant unlike the slight delay of a straight gasoline engine.

Why do you car evaluators rarely discuss cabin noise levels and audio quality. I drove a Lincoln MKZa genesis G 80 with their high-end audio systems and that is the benchmark for quality audio. After driving several other cars the audio becomes a dealbreaker for me with most cars. Please include the quality of the audio that comes in these expensive cars.

I have the 2020 Hybrid Touring edition. I use it to drive for Uber and Lyft. My milage is an astounding 52 mpg. Mostly city driving with a little highway. I am amazed at the car. While the reviewer says it is underpowered for merging onto the highway I say not mine! Plenty of power! Maybe he got a lemon. Mine is not.

I wish car makers would put realistic MPG ratings on their cars. Back in 2005 I bought a Honda Civic Hybrid which came with a claim to get almost 50 mpg. I enthusiastically bought one and disappointingly averaged less than 40 mpg. I joined a class action suit and eventually received a check for $100 from Honda. Small potatoes I know. I've still got the car and otherwise it's been great. I see Honda is still at it.

We have a 2019 Touring Hybrid. The engine rev is perhaps the only big downside. For the Tourings, the sport mode not only gives you more power but also adjusts the suspension. The positive side of that is that the steering and body roll are much better unfortunately it draws focus tot he tires which are more for going in a straight line with great fuel economy and can not maintain grip anywhere close to what the suspension is able to handle. There are a few options available that help to step up the interior quality and comfort. On ours we opted for the heated steering wheel and the rear USB ports for the kids. Both are relatively inexpensive and depending on the dealer and your negotiation can be added easily to bring the Touring up to a more "Elite" trim. In the end For fuel economy I've found it really just depends on how it is driven. For average driving I've found that between 41 and 43 MPG is realistic across all types of driving. If I don't accelerate hard and don't need to run heat or AC, I've found it reasonably possible to get just over 50mpg average interstate and in town so long as I'm not driving on a lot of hills or mountains (which cause that engine to rev.) Overall I've found the Accord Hybrid to be extremely underrated by many in that you have acceleration between the 1.5T and 2.0T, fuel economy better in some case than a Civic, and the same space and comfort without compromise of any high trim non luxury brand. You do give up some handling and have to either learn to live with the engine rev under power or adapt your driving style to reduce that engine rev.

With the car audio turned on drive the 1.5 CVT and hybrids for 30 mins in an exact same route...you’ll see that hybrid is clearly better .. Im not even taking about MPG here

At 5:10, you say that the car can operate in EV mode at slow speeds. It actually can do so at any speed. Cruising at 55 mph on a flat highway, it will spend about 40% of the time in EV mode. But EV mode is overrated. At 6:30, you refer to the popular myth that "actively engaging EV mode saves gas." It doesn't, in any (non-plug-in) hybrid. EV mode uses gas you burned at an earlier time. The other 60% of the time on the highway, the engine is generating more power than the car needs. It is 41% efficient at that level, but only 35% efficient if it generates just the power that is needed. By alternating between 41% and EV mode, instead of running at 35% the whole time, it saves gas. If you actively engage EV mode, you compromise the car's ability to manage this benefit, and probably reduce your mileage.

I am thinking about the EX-L hybrid. Of course, the Camry is also on my list. But I would be happy with those "little" 17 inch wheels. I got 19 inches on my current vehicle and tires are hell expensive. You will be happy with those 17 inch, once you need to replace those tires. I wouldn't opt for higher, to be honest. 17 inch looks fine. It is not a race car.

Love the no transmission! The gas motor doesn't propel the car at all until 40+ mph - till then if it's on it's producing electricity only, so a drone at 30 MPH is the engine as a generator answering the call for juice. The engine connection is without gearing, but the connection is approximately 6th gear.

The so-called drone occurs when the gas engine disconnects from the wheels to produce additional electrical power. Most of the time, the engine is in one of four states. 1. Off. 2. Driving generator at 2000 rpm and 34 HP. With 40.6% efficiency (any excess power charges the battery). 3. Driving wheels at 40 to 75 mph, 1500 to 2800 rpm, and 23 to 48 HP. With >40% efficiency (any excess power charges the battery). 4. Driving generator close to 6200 rpm and 143 HP. With low efficiency. You seldom need that 143 HP kick at 30 mph; if you do, you probably like the engine noise telling you that you are getting it.

Great question, you'll find it running briefly all electric on flat city streets with moderate acceleration while in town, engine kicking on & off very seamlessly in my opinion. With highway driving, the engine will run most of the time but you'll find it cutting off on downgrades and very flat drives under 70mph I'd say. With heavier acceleration or frequent passing mpg may dip to 36-39, with cruise control and steady pace 42-45mpg. So it really depends on road type and driving style, but with its long wheelbase and refined suspension, it's a highway cruiser very comfortable, and at least 40mpg on average so I say yes a great highway car. One more thing, if highway is "wavvy" where car is going up & down up & down, you'll notice the suspension difference bigtime from normal to sport mode. I prefer sport mode on wavvy roads to tighten the suspension up a bit. Otherwise it feels kinda sloppy.

I remember when Honda was sued about the efficiency of the Accord Hybrid's. From experience, the mpg drop's 50% after 5 yrs and the hybrid pack will die exactly in 10 yrs, which will cost you about $4,500 at the dealership to replace. With that being said, you can get over 200,000 miles, with proper maintenance easy.

Warning to those who live in winter climate conditions. I had a 2008 Accord with uncoated factory rear brake calipers that required replacement every 2 years. The salts laid down on the roads rust and seize up the brake calipers. Plus at that point, the rear rotors and pads will also need to be replaced. It's quite an expensive ordeal but not sure if Honda has addressed this issue in its newer models

This powertrain may be suitable for the Accord. I have the same powertrain on the CRV-Hybrid, and on the compact SUV this engine greatly lacks the power to smoothly merge onto highway. I'm sadly considering trading it in.

My 2019 hybrid is a great riding car, lots of room and very comfortable. For people living in Canada and states where they have winter you are in for a bad surprise. First of all, when it snows and there is just a bit of snow near the parking sensors they become useless. Second, the radar that is inset into the front bumper becomes easily clogged with snow and turns off all security features until cleaned. And lastly , like a pure electric car the battery power is limited in colder weather so you never get close the 48mpg.

I was the same way until my niece and her husband let me drive their 2018 EX model. Having driven other hybrids in the past I was skeptical but then more than impressed to see that except for the engine rev when applying heavier throttle and the tires not gripping as well as the 2.0 Sport, it felt nothing like a hybird. In economy mode the acceleration was very similar to my 2006 Accord EX 4cyl. In sport mode you feel the instant torque of the electric motor and you're off to a start more comparable with a 90's stock muscle car (again with tire traction and traction control being more limiting factors than just getting power to the wheels.)

@@JorgeEstebann Yes, but it's quite long. The 10 year battery warranty is 240,000 km, which I believe is 160,000 miles converted. The hybrid components are warrantied for 8 years or 160,000 km, which is 100,000 miles

I have 19 insight and am happy with the car. I drive cautiously so I average 48mpg (even with the insane hills of San Francisco). I’m sad to see lane watch is gone, it’s great for seeing cyclists. I wonder how well the blind spot and cross traffic detects cyclists.

The fact that if you get the hybrid in the to ring it's actually cheaper than the non hybrid explains why over the past few years I've only seen 100 accord hybrid that's not the to ring and all of the Honda Accord hybrids I see are the touring it makes complete sense yet upper thirties to lower forties fuel economy easily versus Lower 20th to lower thirties fuel economy as well as you get to save a little bit of money on the purchase price of your car as well as the hybrid power train will last twice as long in this car as the non hybrid power trains so it makes complete and utter sense why anyone who wants a touring accord would go for the hybrid versus the non hybrid version save money from the day you buy the car and throughout the life of the car because I also believe it is slightly cheaper to ensure the hybrid version of the accord versus the non hybrid so it is a no brainer if you want a Honda Accord touring to by the hybrid save money on the initial purchase price save money on gas increased reliability in the power train and save money on insurance I drive a Toyota prius V And I am really intrested in driving a Honda hybrid with the 2 motor system getting my hands on it for one of the weekends where I end up driving down about a 114 miles 1 way to Colorado Springs and backup home just to have the car as a tester see what it is like to drive And spends an afternoon mimicking my daily driving routine once I get backup from Colorado Springs to kind of give me a good idea of what it is like compared to my Toyota hybrid car As far as driving and fuel economy.

Toyota brought the Camry back to the UK, so I’m hoping Honda will do the same and reintroduce the Accord. Considering that the Japanese drive on the left they could increase their production without any retooling. They’ll probable argue that it would undermine their SUV market sales. But if Toyota can do it ... ?

Love the Accord, but at these price points an electric starts to make sense, due to lack of maintenance and even more fuel savings than a hybrid. Biggest saving grace of Accord is resale.

I guess it depends .. I bought a base model purely to sams some money.. but EX comes with blind spot indicators, heated seats, 8 speakers, Apple car play and few other features I regret for 3k more .. the cheapest electric is in high 30s..and a well equipped one may be low 40s

Warning, I had a Honda Hybrid and the battery failed and it cost over $2,700.00 to replace it. It was still under warranty but Honda found a loophole to get out of honoring it. I got stuck with a nonworking car. Buyers beware! Never get a hybrid!!!

First, 2020 Accord only comes in 1.5 not 2.0. I’ve driven 600 miles mostly on ECO mode with EV on and am getting 42 miles per gallon with relatively non aggressive driving.
