I was the person who like invented open shelving, about 20 years ago, lol. I did that because I didn't have money for upper cabinets. I am glad to see it is trendy now. I have not had problems dusting anything there. You only use the open shelving for stuff you use a lot, like your dishes cups and plates. You are washing them all the time anyway. So it is not a problem. You do have to stack them neater, but once you come up with an arrangement, you just repeat it. Not a big deal.

6:00 I had a long open shelf in my previous home for years. What a pain in the behind! While it was easy to grab whatever I needed from it, it was always dirty. Grease from cooking seemed to fly to it like there was some sort of grease magnet, and combined with dust that's everywhere, it just made keeping it and the things I kept on the shelf clean a neverending chore. So, for me, no more open shelving. It may look good but, practically, unless you have a housekeeper who loves that kind of cleaning, it's a nightmare.

I love the old mansions in my area. They have walk in pantries with a window in them. This is the original open shelving. You get your ingredients out, then close the door to keep the dust and grease out while you are cooking. And I love the antique dishes on display in a separate piece of furniture to one side designed just for nice dishes and silverware. These two things keep your kitchen free of clutter and your kitchen cabinets can be used for all your cookware. Often there is a diner style booth with padded bench seats that have storage underneath. And bright windows looking out into the garden. I also love seeing a dish drying rack hung over the sink drain board.

Open shelving looks good until you have all of your daily useable items stored out in the open. Dust and grease accumulate on open areas and it can become a big chore to keep clean and free of sticky dust. Even with a great vent system, it will happen.

That depends. If you have a big family or a lot of junk in your kitchen you will have a mess on them. So, don't have them. I live a minimalist style and after years seeing how impractical kitchens the apartments and houses had, I designed my own with what was going to work for me. I have open shelves with only dishes I will use on a regular basis, and the rest is well hidden on big and small drawers... I don't have much space but my kitchen looks and feels phenomenal...

Designers, as a group, seem more interested in selling looks than in function. As a contractor and cabinet dealer, it's always amazed me that designers don't display more concern for their client's budget and the function and flow of a kitchen. If they did, open shelves and parallel double islands surrounded by walls on 3 sides would have never caught on. The public, too, shares some blame. Becoming mesmerized by flash and glitz, and outdoing the girls at the county club seems to be a greater motivation than spending wisely and getting something that works well. I've worked for and with designers on several projects in multiple states. With one exception, it's more about form than function.
@walk-inmyshoes98184 жыл бұрын
You are so right. I got to that conclusion after living in different places. That's the reason why I designed my own kitchen based on functionality. Although I did wanted open shelves, I make sure that it always looks nice and clean. All the rest I made sure I had enough storage on the drawers. And of course. I live in a minimalist style. So, don't need to have the excess...
@jayaroseinteriordesigneduc374 жыл бұрын
Hello, I saw this and wanted to comment that you, as a kitchen cabinet representative and contractor, should not cast stones, please. We are all part of the same team! Designers as a group, if educated, focus on the flow, function, and intelligent space planning first. The "look" as you casually stated is just the finishing touches on an otherwise complex puzzle solution. All of the materials that comprise "the look" are carefully considered for their characteristics and maintenance. You may be working with many untrained people, and there are many if this is your experience. If that is the case, then educating the clients (designers) you work with, even if they are designers, is your best bet for resolving issues and finding workable solutions. Every client I work with understands the implications of every selection or recommendation I make for them. That is the design process. Yeah, you can pick a cabinet door and hardware and call yourself a designer, but really that is not the scope of services offered by professionals. Of course, this is my experience. And you have yours, I just don't want to be lumped in with anyone. I am my own designer person. :)
@landonedwards75044 жыл бұрын
@@jayaroseinteriordesigneduc37 Appreciate your thoughts. But I have yet to meet a designer who solicits input from a contractor. They may be out there, but few and far between. One example: a designer who specified a huge 7ft x 7 ft window on the rear wall of a kitchen remodel. Her design had it placed about 2" above the countertop. The window went in, the countertops went in, then the electrician asks how he's supposed to install outlets every 6 ft on this wall (above the countertop) in order to comply with code. This was 2 days after the designer told the countertop people where to drill for the faucet. Turns out her location did not allow the swing of the faucet to reach both sinks. I can recount similar, but less disastrous issues with other designers I've worked with. In all cases, not one of them sought advice. And in one case, ignored it when I offered an opinion. All I can say is this is not casting stones. It's real world experience. And all my examples involve designers who've been in business for years, and consider themselves to be successful (and talented LOL). Possibly some/many in your industry need to re-evaluate their priorities, based on the sound parameters you enumerated above. In my experience, it's all about the look for many of them.
@jayaroseinteriordesigneduc374 жыл бұрын
@@landonedwards7504 Unfortunate, really. Are you receiving design documents and specifications from your designers? You probably have to review these to catch any errors ahead of time. I know, not your job but which is worse? Btw, I imagine the issue you spoke about could be resolved with pop-up outlets or linear countertop outlets?? You can't tell a story without the conclusion?!?! 😉
@landonedwards75044 жыл бұрын
@@jayaroseinteriordesigneduc37 Most designers I've worked with have been hired by the homeowner, apart from my own engagement.And there has been little documentation passed on to me except for drawings the designer got approved by the homeowner independently. So all issues are after-the-fact. In the example above, my involvement with this particular designer was that of an employee in her company. Necessary because my state does not allow anyone without a contractors license to book contracting work. When I came aboard, the project I referred to had already been agreed to by the homeowner without my involvement. I was needed so she could legally operate. I was to oversee (but not advise) the trades. Once I saw what was happening., I left. No idea how she resolved the mess.

Never had a dust issue, and I'm not a cleaning freak. I have a good range hood that's appropriately sized for my cooking habits. I don't plan to use open shelving near my stove, nor do I want to clutter them with unnecessary things that will collect dust. I think it's a great look if you do it wisely, and don't stack dishes that you don't use every day on the shelves. To each their own, right?

Hurricane Harvey forced the issue for me. I went with Sherwin Williams "In The Navy" blue. Light gray floor, medium gray stone look formica counters. Just 4 open cabinets away from the range and sink areas. Fantastic kitchen. Under cabinet lighting.... when we had visitors they all loved that kitchen. I may do it again here in Colorado. If you simply hate a trend...... eschew it with confidence. I hate the granite and quartz trend. I discovered most women don't really like it, cold, unfriendly like a grave stone and has to be oiled every year. If you don't like something do NOT let someone pressure you into following that trend,

I'm watching Erikka Dawn Interiors - 2020 kitchen trends. She's talking about the rise of technology integration into kitchens such as "Integrated charging stations for your cell phones, and tablets holders, and embedded audio systems in the cabinetry for streaming music." Okay... None of that. I can buy a roll top desk and put my technology in there with chargers. I can buy a bluetooth stereo. "The ability to control your lighting from your smartphone or tablet." I can buy specialized bulbs. The HomeBrite bulbs I bought worked great in my last place. It had no built in computer tech. I do not need a smart oven, fridge, or dishwasher. I may buy a smart coffee maker or some other small appliance. If they made a Crock-Pot that was not too big that kept food frozen and then you signalled it to turn on when you knew you were coming home... That might actually be useful. If you're coming home from a working trip and you know you'll get your own home cooked meal. Hmmm. Or it may go the way of the bread maker. Touchless faucet... YES, YES, YES! I can't just buy my own touchless faucet. No soap dispenser. Are you sensing a theme Here? I don't want to be stuck with technology that I don't like or becomes out of date. AGAIN... I’ve had white (with small flecks of neutral colors) quartz countertops in my kitchen and a blue/terracotta multi toned counter on a built in bar (a mix of the brands Silestone. and Cambria), for 15 years and as someone who cooks 90% of my meals, I’ve put hot pans, fresh off the stove, on the surface more times than not and have never had any discoloration from the heat.These durable countertops don’t scratch, stain, lose their shine, discolor, chip or anything else. They are not porous at all which promotes a more sanitary cooking surface. This is why quartz countertops are favored by a lot of restaurant kitchens. I imagine someone will come up with an even better material for countertops someday but for now, I’m too practical and use my kitchen too much to consider any other type. And I do think my countertops are beautiful.
