2020 Lexus GX 460 - Classic, luxurious, and unstoppable

The Lexus GX might look long in the tooth, but few luxury crossovers deliver this kind of off-road capability.

The Lexus GX was introduced in 2002 and redesigned for the 2010 model year. The second generation continued to the current 2020 model year, albeit with some new design tweaks from Lexus. This updated GX takes on the garish hourglass grille design that has exploded onto the front end of every vehicle in the Lexus lineup. In fact, the GX is one of the last vehicles to take on this latest version of the design. On some Lexus vehicles, it is pretty hard to look at, but on the GX, it’s not so bad. The GX certainly wears it better than the larger LX.
Lexus offers the GX in three trims: the 460, the 460 Premium, and the 460 Luxury. The 460 is effectively the base trim, though it’s hard to call it that. It has a long list of standard features, including 10-way power front seats, leather upholstery, push-button start, automatic climate control, and a power sunroof. It also comes standard with an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system.
As its alphanumerics suggest, the GX 460 is powered by a 4.6-liter V8 engine. It makes 301 horsepower and 329 pound-feet of torque, sent through a 6-speed automatic transmission to standard 4-wheel drive (4WD). Reading those horsepower and torque specs now might not impress you, because many modern V6 (and even some highly turbocharged 4-cylinder) engines are capable of exceeding them. But V8 engines offer an unmistakable swell of power that you experience in real-world driving. Whether you're lurching off the line or rumbling up to highway speeds, sometimes there really is no replacement for displacement.
With all rear seats folded, the GX offers 64.7 cubic feet of cargo space, which is not a lot. The less expensive, 2-row Jeep Grand Cherokee has 68.3 cubic feet of cargo space. The Land Rover Discovery is in a similar capability range and is equally priced, but it has nearly 80 cubic feet of cargo space.
Perhaps the area in which the GX most clearly shows its age is in its touchscreen infotainment setup. This is clearly the last generation of Lexus Enform, but that has its perks. For one, it is a true touchscreen, as opposed to using the frustrating Lexus Remote Touch cursor system. The touchscreen is flanked by large buttons for audio, navigation, and climate controls, and it's proof that we’re headed in the wrong direction when it comes to in-car user interfaces. This decade-old layout is plainly simpler than what you might find in the Lexus RX or NX.
The 2020 Lexus GX 460 has a base MSRP of $53,000. A mid-range GX 460 Premium starts at $55,790, and a range-topping Luxury trim starts at $64,265. Our test model included the Sport Design Package ($2,020), the dual-screen rear-seat entertainment system ($1,985), and the Mark Levinson premium audio system package ($1,145). All told, factoring in a few more options and destination, our test model clocked in at more than $70,000.

The gx isn’t based on the 4runner is based on the prado but they all share same platform and frame set up they have the same wheelbase and relatively similar dimensions the 3 are also built along side each other in the same factory and assembly line in Japan so they pretty much start as the same car with the same frame then they built them up differently from there, you’ll be amazed to see how many parts are shared between these vehicles despite being sold in completely different markets

They've been using the same V-8 for over ten years now; this is probably the most reliable engine ever made- expect 300k easily if properly taken care of. Love the new front end design, hate that it doesn't have Apple-Play, and that infotainment system/screen are super outdated. I love my RX 450H, and will seriously consider trading it in to get one of these. Also..... time to get a proper rear-hatch that opens automatically!!!! Great review.

Curious, at 3:01 CarGurus recommends the base model (at $53K) saying it has "Full leather Upholstry". Unfortunately, only the Luxury version has leather...the Base and Premium have Lexus NuLuxe. I wish leather and Mark Levinson sound system was available as an option on the Premium or Base . . . but it is not. Are you suggesting leather can be custom ordered on one of these lower models?

GX isn't based on a 4 Runner. It is based on Land Cruiser Prado. It is truly an unstoppable vehicle. I own a 2008 model, and I am amazed by its simplicity, but yet reliability and functionality. Excellent vehicle. Your presentation style is very robotic and somewhat fake though.

The GX isn’t “based” on the Prado. The GX literally IS the Prado. But the Prado is also based on the 4Runner. It’s simpler to say the GX is based on the 4Runner than to go through the explanation of what the Toyota version is overseas when it’s the same car. The GMC Yukon XL isn’t “based” on the Chevrolet Suburban, it IS the Chevrolet Suburban with a different badge. But the Suburban is based on the Silverado. “Based on” and “rebadged” are different.

Ackj 375718 I mean obviously there are massive differences in the 4Runner and Prado/GX, but the GX is still more closely related to the Prado than the 4Runner. The underpinnings may be the same, but there are more difference from the Prado/GX and 4Runner that in turn makes it more logical to say the GX is a rebadged Prado while the underpinnings are based on the 4Runner (which in turn is based on the Tacoma/Hilux. Cars can have the same underpinnings and setup, but their designs, their functions, their markets, etc. can be different enough to where you can’t say it’s the same vehicle. I refer you back to my GMC/Cadillac/Chevrolet statement above. The Suburban/Tahoe/Yukon/YukonXL/Escalade/EscaladeEXL are all based on the Silverado/Sierra platform, but it makes more sense to say the Escalade is a rebadged Tahoe/Suburban as it’s the “base” version of the exact same car. The Lexus GX is the upscale version of the Prado in that sense, but the Prado is the cousin of the 4Runner. GX is rebadged Prado with more similarities, Prado is based on the 4Runner, but a different car. I’m based on the genes of my mom and dad but I’m certainly not my mom and dad - I like to think I’m better XD. Gah it’s midnight and I’m exhausted so I’m hoping this made sense.

The rear, side, and interior haven’t changed for over a decade. They kept giving it facelifts and even though it still looks cool and is more capable than 95% of the vehicles on the road, it really needs to be completely redesigned to stay competitive. The 16 combined MPG alone is just... absurd in 2020, even for a big-ish SUV.

The only reason to get this over Grand Cherokee is reliability. It will last 20 years easy. Yet lack of android auto and Apple car play these days is beyond bad in a luxury vehicle.

the grand cherokee has a limit when it comes to the offroad side of things. many people believe simply because of the "jeep" badge that the grand cherokee has the features of an offroad vehicle (ie solid rear axle and body of frame chassis) but in reality it does not and is a significantly more road-focused vehicle. the lack of these features means that the grand cherokee has a limited aftermarket in offroad parts and really cant compare offroad to the likes of the 4runner, gx, land cruiser, etc..

it sits a lot higher when the suspension is in "high clearance" mode. this review did poorly to show off the offroad capability of this land cruiser based car. and yes i did say land cruiser the frame beneath this vehicle is that of a land cruiser prado, not a 4runner as commonly misconceived. luckily the aftermarket availability of steel bumpers and offroad goodies for the gx is pretty good too.

You can not compare this to an explorer. Their no longer off-road vehicles and it’s not in the same class luxury wise as this product, Lexus slowly makes changes to this like Porsche does to their cars because they’ve got it ironed out and it’s super reliable. Lexus IS smart they don’t do turbo six cylinder .. use a normally aspirated 8.. runs forever.. this will be my next car when they refresh the interior and give me apple car play. I’ve been scouting out bmw, Audi, Mercedes, Lincoln, but I keep coming back to this.. I wanna take my pup to the beach and have a comfortable smooth ride, and not so big that I can’t park it when in the city. There is nothing at this price point better.. and nothing made is more reliable. This car will last 25 years if you want to keep it that long.. maybe longer.. bmws start breaking up after 100,000 miles

Thanks for your reply! The same kind of noise is here kzbin.info/www/bejne/eGrbYn-Bbt6JedE starting 4:30. My GX now is a head turner on any parking lot. And Lexus dealer states in written that this noise is “normal” They rejected to do something with brakes resurface/lubrication etc. No off-roading no muddy roads no water it was just a common commute city/highways. This sound like a grandma’s door appeared after 2-3 week at 500-600 miles.

At least with Lexus Suvs they know their market is us OK Boomer types who don't want cutting edge tech, we want a comfy Reliable (most important) vehicle that all the grandkids fit in. We also want to be able to drive it without taking a course in how to manage gizmos we don't care much about. As long as I can get Sirius and read the map and backup I'm fine. Don't even need parking since we learned to drive on mom's old wagons. Merc and BMW are beautiful but way too much to go wrong on them and American cars sadly are not even on the radar reliability wise

There are SUVs that get better fuel economy, but are less reliable and often don’t get MUCH better fuel economy. There are 3 row SUVs that get an average of 20 MPG, that’s only 4 better than the GX. Add to the fact that those SUVs will almost certainly not be as reliable as this car is - as the engine in this Lexus is proven and will easily last 300k+ - it makes sense that they’ve kept this engine in it. The engine is also great for towing, and easy to modulate off-road with its torque. I would love better fuel economy, yes, but I’d rather take a car that I KNOW will work when I need it most than a car that I save a few hundred bucks a year on gas with. Also, it may be based on an old chassis, but the Chrysler 300 is built on the frame of an 80s Mercedes E Class. The Suburban up until this new redesign had been on the same platform for more than a decade. If anything, the fact that it’s still the same vehicle, that should be taken as evidence of how great it’s been built, how proven it is, and the numbers also prove that. Most cars do not change every refresh. I mean why would they? It’s a waste of money! They usually just make a few panels nicer and people call it “all new” when it’s not. What’s the difference here?

I sure hope this Bozo, doing the Demonstration of the Lexus is not a salesman because by him saying he doesn’t like the front grill Right off the batt is a huge thing to say that’s the main component in a piece of that vehicle aesthetics wise.
