Great down to earth sensible review. My daily drive is a Panamera, I'm also lucky enough to have a Boxster for a bit of fun. I have a Taycan on order but really can't decide whether to go ahead or get a 992 and keep my Panamera. My drive to work is only 10 miles and I have a charge point at home and work, so I can do most journeys electric which I do. I love the electric mode so quiet and restful. Really suits the Panamera but I also love the sound of the Petrol engine with the sports exhaust and no range anxiety. Occasionally I do 300 mile journeys and the charge network is lousy. I was surprised how much I like electric driving but I still enjoy the petrol engine. I guess I have the best of both worlds in the Panamera. So to Taycan or not to Taycan?
@mromar27245 жыл бұрын
Not sure if you made a decision yet or not but I just dropped in to tell you that I can relate to at-least half of your dilemma. I have a 991 and find myself at the cross roads of trading to a new 992 or Taycan. Love the visceral feel of a high revving NA engine (I got mine right before they went Turbo charged on 991.2) but a recent test drive in a Tesla performance car has me wondering how far up the price list do I want to go chasing similar performance in a Gas engine. In summary Tesla blew me away and I have never experienced such thrust in any vehicle. Having said, Im curious to hear your opinion on this range anxiety and do you feel other Ev owners share the same sentiment. Reason why I ask is that I can see myself getting stressed if lets say I had 100Km or so left and im equal amount of KM away from a charge station.
@davidowen28595 жыл бұрын
@@mromar2724 I think I'm nearly there on the decision but could still change. Like you I tried the P100D determined if I'm honest to dislike it but the performance blew me away. I get sick of hearing electric lovers knocking Porsche and vice versa but I just couldn't live with the quality or lack of with Tesla. My Panamera is gorgeous. Yes it has every conceivable extra and yes they cost a fortune but it never fails to put a smile on my face. As far as performance goes, I really can't play very much with the Panamera or Boxster too many bloody cameras so I don't need more. I just love the orchestra from 0 to 60. When I drove the P100D in a spirited fashion in winter with lights, AC and seats on I realised I would get about 160 miles. With one yes one charge point within 50 miles of me and one on my usual 300 mile return journey there was no way. It's a little better now with 2 points but still not possible. So for now the Taycan is out. Im keeping the Panamera and getting a 992. In a couple of years time I will look again at the infrastructure and maybe go electric but I can see me getting another Panamera. I'm also not convinced electric is the future. Our national grid will only support another 100k cars without serious investment and then there's the cobalt problem. If I were you I'd keep the 991 and get a 992 daily or Panamera. You will never ever go out to it and regret it.

Al mac i believe that. teslas pick up their slack in the straight lines. go on a twisty back road or a constant tight turn track and the taycan would kill it but tesla buyer’s don’t care about that. they don’t even want to drive their cars they want autopilot.

@@dasneekj without doubt the Porsche is better in the corners than the Tesla however the Porsche might actually be quicker in the straights as well. Alternatively I could get a Tesla Model S Long Range for $55k less, be just as fast from 0-60, have an extra 120+ miles of driving range, nationwide Supercharger network, and AutoPilot on top of that. Porsche completely missed the mark on the Taycan and to make up for it they decided to charge about $75k too much.

@@marsrover790 It's essentially the same price as a Model S, if you don't go crazy on options. Car Wow's KZbin video shot on ice/snow in sub-zero temps and studded snow tires in Finland yielded 258 miles of range in the 93-kWh Taycan 4S. What does the Model S P100D get for range in sub-zero temps on snow/ice? Please understand that, while I doubt I'll ever own a Tesla (and I've owned 3 Porsches), I am extremely thankful for Tesla's success and am very impressed by Tesla's superior technology; Tesla is better than Porsche by a long ways in their battery capacity. I've driven a Model S, and a good friend of mine owns one and loves it, and I've talked long hours with him about it, asking him about autopilot, about its range in different temps, about charging issues, etc. But I know from my Panameras that Porsches are really well built and that their seats are more comfortable for long road trips. I think that the computer screens in the Taycan look far superior to what Teslas have; I'm not a fan of big computer "tablets" that look like they're glued on to a dashboard as an afterthought, and I'm not a fan of the lack of instrument "gauges" behind the steering wheel (having to look over to the center screen in the Model 3, for example, for your speed). I think that the embedded digital screens look much better in the Taycan than the Tesla's large "tablets"; I like that you can optionally get a plain metal roof instead of a glass roof in the Taycan; I like the exterior appearance more in the Taycan (though the Model S is by far the best-looking Tesla, and I've always liked its exterior). Personally, I won't buy the Taycan in its current trim levels, but I will give a really good look at the forthcoming Cross Turismo (presumably a true hatchback with some extra ground clearance and presumably seating for three in the back seat) and the forthcoming Macan BEV. What's great is that Tesla is spurring all these other automakers to come out with things to rival the Teslas, and that's a good thing for everybody. Kudos to both Tesla and Porsche for their EVs. No other automaker so far has a good-looking and fun-to-drive EV worth seriously looking at, save maybe for Volvo (Polestar 2) and Ford (Mach-E); I also test-drove an I-Pace and was not impressed, and the e-tron is having tons of problems.

Great review about a great car (the best EV until today imho). However one little mistake is made in the intro. Gas powered cars will never be a history lesson. They will continue to exist, since an ICE engine gives has revs, a heartbeat which you can hear and feel. You can play that heartbeat with your gearbox and throttle. This driving sensation and driving involvement is something a EV never can reproduce. Therefor there always will be a market for fast ICE powered cars.
