2020 Subaru Legacy | The Sedan You May Have Overlooked

Normally wagons live in the shadows of their flashier and better selling sedan counterpart, not so for Subaru's Legacy however where the Outback wagon manages to outsell the Legacy by nearly 5:1. Some companies might have just ditched the sedan altogether with that kind of sales imbalance but Subaru decided to bring both vehicles to America for 2020. In a shrinking sedan market AWD seems to be the feature to look for and not everyone offers it. That said, since this video was recorded we now know that the Avalon, Camry and Optima are all getting AWD very very soon...

The reason to go with with Legacy over Outback should be more than just that you like sedan styling. It is a more fuel efficient vehicle. If yo have no use for the extra luggage room, then why not go for the vehicle that consumes less fuel and is slightly cheaper? Some people strictly need a commuter car.

I ordered the top trim of this car (2.4 Turbo GT in Canada), picked it up in October. I prefer a lower ground clearance than the Outback. The ride, handling and power are all stellar. The infotainment system takes a little getting used to, but it's big and bright and responsive and easy to use. The CVT-turbo combination is very responsive. The conservative styling may not be to everyone's taste but the body lines and contours are quite elegant in a subtle understated way, classic. The running lights are distinctive and sexy as hell.

This is coming from a Subaru owner: I was going to buy one back in November actually. But I was very dissatisfied with the infotainment screen. I thought Subaru of all manufacturers would have kept their system simple and robust. It takes 3 inputs just to get to the seat heater and back again. That's 5 seconds where my eyes are off the road just to adjust the seat heater. Not to mention the reliability. If the infotainment screen dies in 8 years the cost to replace it may be greater than the value of the car. Really disappointed in Subaru for making such a dramatic change like this.

I'm tired of boxes and heights: that's why I'm getting a sedan. Plus i only compare touring models among what you compared. BTW: The Legacy Touring XT is quieter than all lesser trims because it has acoustical glass all the way around whereas all other Legacy trims have front windshield acoustical glass. The Legacy Touring XT trim has turbo standard. I've done the details which you touched on . . . you did a GREAT job . . . on the same comparison makes with all being the top line trims . . . mostly called "touring" trim . . . so apples to apples . . . Legacy wins. Also, that big touch screen is an homage to Tesla; Subaru top engineer in that area has an affinity for Tesla. FYI: I'm walking away from a 2000 Toyota Sienne XLE with 250,000mi and I still can't kill it! Also owned Hondas. Been thru many small cars with college children and hubby with trucks/SUVs . . . lets just say the mom want's to go to midsize zip in comfort and this made my head turn from a Lexus and Audi. (which are in the family, too).

There are so many legacies and outbacks here in New England, they should put it on the state flags. I had a 2006 model for 8yrs, reliability is ok, although that car had a rather harsh ride, no headroom, the interior was kinda cheap looking, I guess to keep the cost down. It blew the head gasket at 120k. BTW, you will still need the snow tires at winter, don't expect magic from the all wheel drive on its own with cheap, all -season tires.

Frank Sz Yes I’ve heard head gaskets are a problem with Subarus. I wonder why? And because of the boxster design, there are 2 heads, not one.

@@alliejr - I was warned by another Subaru owner, who had a few Subarus since the 90s and he was telling me to get the head gasket replaced around 90k-100k. I was a bit skeptical about his recommendation and actually I didn't notice it first when it was blown, just the car was lacking a bit of power and the check engine came on and the scanner was giving me a code for having a lean mixture. As far as I know, it's a shortcoming of the engine design itself, since it is really the same engine for 2 decades now with Subaru re-tuning it over and over to keep up with the competition. It's the same engine across all their vehicles from the Impreza to the Forester or Outback, doesn't matter. Also to be noted, the all wheel drive system on these cars are prone for wheel bearing failures, I replaced them twice over 8yrs of owning it, maybe the setup puts too much stress on the wheels, the way the all wheel operates, I don't know.

I drove thru Vermont this past summer, and I basically saw a Subaru in every other driveway. Not exagerrating by much, either. I think they've fixed their head gasket issues for the most part, from what I've heard.

yeah, people need to realize AWD does ONE thing. Mildly helps you accelerate better in moderately slippery conditions. It WILL NOT help you turn or stop. A RWD car with snow tires will drive circles around an awd car with summer tires and still has double or better the control of all seasons. IIRC, Tire Rack and Tyre Review tests, if we take snow tires at 100% grip, all seasons will be around 1/2 that, summer tires will be around 1/10. Don't take my word people, look it up. My personal experience with a RWD sports car was, summer tires - can't even move up a 2 degree incline, just spins. Winter tires ... almost feel confident enough to auto-cross the damn thing. Can get it to drift if you try, but it stops, turns, and goes as if the road was dry with the snow tires, while the summer tires you literally could feel you were on ice and snow; like wearing slippers on an icy sidewalk vs non slip work shoes.

I purchased the XT after seeing this car at the auto show last year. It’s the complete package. Up here in the pacific NW where you have more rain than any other form of inclement weather the AWD can be a life saver when driving on roads at highway speeds with standing water. These cars are rare. Outbacks, Foresters and Impreza’s dominate the roads up here when it comes to Subaru. I don’t have dogs or a house full of kids so no need for an SUV. I ordered Pearl white with black leather interior and had the windows tinted for a very impressive looking vehicle.

Yeah it's weird how they make body styles model exclusive despite "other" model being identical, its the same with WRX and Levorg. And it kind of extends to engine and transmission offerings, they easily could offer 2.5i engines in models from 2010s in XV/Crosstrek/Impreza with manual transmission just as in Forester and same with Levorg with WRX's manual transmission. Tho thanks to how they just all share components it's something that more willing owner could do on their own, but going into trouble of engine, transmission or suspension swaps is quite challenging even if its almost interchangeable. Subaru offering such from factory would be much better

tesla syndrome ... but better than the 'cheap tablet adapter' look that a lot of manufacturers use; Mazda being a prime example of doing it terribly ... I'd pass on a vehicle with that for its competition it is such an eyesore, cheaply done/integrated. When spending tens of thousands of dollars, cheap/bad aesthetics are a no go for me. Rather find a well cared for used car instead, and there are some high end luxury cars for pretty cheap if I were to choose between say a mazda/toyota/honda new with a bit tablet that looks like it was glued to the dash with a kit from a parts store bargain bin. Imagine reaching up to those touch screens vs even this car. So I do agree its a little weird, like the tesla thing or a prius with no gauge cluster in front of the driver ... but better than the lazy approach even luxury cars, not just 'mazda' are using these days to have a screen people shouldn't be staring at while driving anyway. HUDs that display more and more information in a controlled, concise way at the bottom of the windshield is far better for the supposed purpose of easier to glance at (which I believe is not that, but COST cutting). But, I'm yelling at clouds, if I'm to be honest. What I feel the real problem is ... cars are designed by accountants and people working 'jobs', not careers of passion. I believe a lot of people we have today that create and influence the designs in the companies, studied and applied for the jobs because it paid well, not because they have an innate passion for vehicles. They are like a used car salesman I met once and tried to 'talk cars'; he said 'they get me from point A to point B' ... well then, I don't have anything to say to someone like that and I won't buy a car from them. I already will know more about the vehicles on the lot more than even seasoned car salesmen that actually like their products ... but when they just don't care ... well, that is how I feel most cars are designed. Now, there are some gems in the rough. I think the BRZ in particular is well designed aesthetically from the shape of the body to the font and style chose for the gauge cluster (not so much the last part for its FRS/86 counterpart). If we go back a bit, I feel the VW Phaeton is also one of those cars that the inside is pretty damn well designed, even if the outside is a bit utilitarian. Hell, I'll even throw in the CT 200h as a decently designed car ... both the interior and the exterior ... even compared to what I'd consider its cousin, the Scion/Corolla iM-hatch (the back end of those, something doesn't sit right in my eyes, too slope-y). Speaking of gauge clusters, this car has a pretty clean looking one without being to bland, especially for its market. And I do appreciate how AoA channel reviews vehicles. No fluff, not repeating tropes, no bs. Just great car reviews without the snark.

Exactly! The wider the tire contact area, the louder the tire noise. The tire compound and tread pattern also come into play. Tire circumference or wheel size do no effect road noise, only ride quality.

Great information and review as always. Actually like the Legacy and now that the Outback has grown so large, would rather have the sedan. And, I checked online, Outback outsells the Legacy in the US about 5:1- approx. 165K to 32K through November, 2019 for MY 2019.

Real good breakdown of the legacys completion and how fair the pricing is with the features on each trim. I take exception to the amount of time the Altima is mentioned though. The Altima is not full time AWD and the computer is not as quick to react as subarus since the legacy is full time awd. That's not a big difference until you are going above 45 mph in which case the subarus are the best value AWD cars. Driving an outback is a VERY unique driving experience where as a legacy seems more familiar to other cars. The legacy is the safest family sedan out there, but if you don't need the size or the speedy engine the Impreza by far the best affordable/safest car under 30k out there.

We have a 2019 Legacy Limited 2.5i and from all accounts the changes between that and 2020's with 2.5i are mostly visual. The Harman Kardon speakers are amazing and I appreciate that the passenger seat is power adjustable. The adaptive cruise control is very smooth and doesn't needlessly tap the brakes all the time etc like I feared it might. The leather is cushier than the other 2 leather seated cars I've owned. Unfortunately the rest of the car is really lame. The boxer engine's growl under acceleration might be music to somebodies ears but to me it's just loud, especially at cold startup. The CVT isn't any more awful than any other CVT but its only benefit is helping MPG. In most ways it detracts from enjoyment for most traditional car enthusiasts. The car is SO softly sprung it can bob and wander on imperfect roads. One thing we didn't fully notice right away is that the lower portion of the seats is quite small. Seemingly not even a tiny bit bigger than our Focus or Cruze seats. The 2020 top trims have that extendable thigh support which I'm envious of. The touch screen system in the 2019's is kind of a mess, especially the Tom Tom factory nav. Overall, I'd say you pay a price in refinement and functionality to get that magical AWD.

Kevin Ricks 21k miles is just breaking it in. many of us run our cars to 200k+. CVTs may be the future, but for now too many people are having serious issues for a lot of us to consider them.

They are good, If you drive normal and don't tow they can make 200k. You try hot rodding it or try to pull a trailer you will be in trouble. Some people can drive a car and make it last forever, some people are idiots and can tear up anything.

There was a time the Legacy was a small Japanese sports sedan/wagon that gave other premium entry sport sedan/wagons a run for their money. Now its nothing more than a vestigial organ off the sales juggernaut of the Outback that can barely compete in the American family sedan segment. While Subaru of America pretends it can compete, if they market it as the "SUV" of family cars. This used to be one of the most popular cars in Japan and Subaru of Japan doesn't even bother to market it in Japan. It has been effectively replaced it with the smaller and sportier Levorg in Japan. However, in North America we don't get the Levorg and instead get this afterthought of a sedan. The best thing for Legacy would be for it to go back to its sports sedan roots and divorce itself from the Outback platform. Or else it will continue to be an irrelevant sedan that Subaru of America sells just to fill a void in its lineup.

I bought a legacy this week because I needed a car and there were huge discounts. The biggest problem for me is that I didn’t realize the legacy, unlike the outback, has zero towing capacity. Great car, great deal, if you won’t be towing anything. It also has no roof rack.

On Black Friday I bought a 2017 Legacy Premium. It has a trunk, a REAL key, NO remote start (If I can start it remotely so can someone else!) and the Eyesight system for just UNDER $14,000 with 63K miles. I live in northwestern Colorado and AWD is virtually mandatory to drive on the Interstate between September and May with Colorado traction laws. Very good find and price.

Many markets outside of US either don't sell a Subaru sedan or they offer it with either AWD or FWD. The Legacy is a decent sedan, but the Subaru boxer engine is never as efficient as similar output inline fours, and they could increase the appeal of all their models by offering a choice of FWD. Unless you really need 4 wheel drive there are better sedan choices, and the Outback makes more sense for folks that really do travel off road and want to carry camping and extra gear. People that don't need AWD or any form of 4-wheel drive are just fine with front wheel drive and Subies are not as fuel efficient as comparable front wheel drive cars. If you love your Subie or your cowboyedtruck that's great. If the Legacy was more efficient and sold as a front wheel drive option they would cost less and more would be sold. Car & Driver review of the 2023 model: The Legacy is a decent family sedan, but standard all-wheel drive and a plethora of safety tech does not a compelling automobile make.

Probably is the best option for someone that already has an suv and needs to commute in a comfortable sedan that feels better than a fwd (no doubt about it) the Legacy is the best choice by far without breaking the bank ... I have the 2012 base model and it drives good, not driver focus and sharp like the previous civic that I had but it's a softer ride ideal for everyday commute and highway cruiser.

My 2013 Legacy started excessive oil consumption at 60k miles. Dealer did oil consumption tests and said it was within specs, still have issues in between oil changes having to buy quarts of oil out of pocket. Disappointed with Subaru's lack of help with this issue which appears quite common with many of their cars. 😔

You always like to say that wider tires mean more road noise and the reason why this car is quiet is because of the narrower tires. I want to point out that’s not always true. A car with low road noise is more due to the car makers paying more attention to reducing NVH and not just the width of the tires. For example, a Prius or Mitsubishi Mirage have very narrow tires but they have tons of road noise because of cheap suspension design and having little to no sound deadening.

DriverFocus is very cool - it adjusts the seats and even side mirrors to your position, for up to 6 profiles. It also tracks your gas mileage individually, so I can compare my driving versus my wife, for example. I see “Antuan” has a profile but you did not. Did CNET have this loaner before you? Try it out it’s more than meets the eye.

Legacy to me is the "reliable Passat". I do like the more conservative styling. But I also do love the new Camry and Altima. I'd have to test drive each to make a decision. I do remember driving a rental 2015 Altima S and I was impressed. The seats were extremely comfortable, soft suspension made it great for NJ potholes. Definitely not a sports car but very roomy and comfortable. So for me it would come down to these three Altima, Legacy or Legacy. Alex, the Buick Regal is also another sedan with AWD which is completely ignored in your review. Otherwise you are correct (the Buick competes more with these cars than the higher end BMW). Also, boxer engines are harder to change the spark plugs - otherwise they are very similar to the other designs. Last, since the Outback is higher off the ground, handling is not quite as good.

The Outback is more expensive than the Legacy, it is 150 lb heavier, has a higher center of gravity and is less fuel efficient. The Outback is as high as my Mazda CX-5, mine also weighs less (2020 weigh about the same) and drives better. I don't buy the argument that the Outback drives more like a car, unless you compare it to body on frame SUVs. The combination of a heavy, high center of gravity vehicle with a tad weaker base engine and CVT made the Outback a non attractive option for me. If I had to compromise on such a vehicle, then any crossover could be considered as well. In sedan form, the Legacy always had the advantage of having AWD. In the past, it was considerably slower and less fun to drive then the FWD competitors, also based on your previous Legacy review. It seems today it is better than ever and almost up to par. I wish Americans were smarter, a non-lifted legacy wagon would have been available. It could cost less, have better fuel economy, drive better and weigh less, with being as practical as the Outback minus the ground clearance, than not everyone needs.

I've owned both Toyotas and Hondas and they are excellent cars. I currently drive a late model Honda. But I like the Legacy styling better than the current Accord and Camry. Just can't cotton to the "New" accord styling and the Camry just looks overcooked. Would I choose either of those over the Legacy? Hard to say, not having driven them in person ... and in the end I'm a practical person - you spend your time in the drivers seat; not standing around outside analyzing the styling of the vehicle ... as long as it's not just flat out ugly, which none of the three are.

I'm curious if the large screen is distracting at night? Personally I find that a darker cabin improves visibility of the road, and I wonder how much light the screen is adding to the cabin.

Jon Moyer I have 2019 e class with massive dual screens. I dim the speedo screen and turn off the infotainment screen completely off most of the times. I hate theese massive screens.

Probably the most compelling reason to get this is if you want something that's more conservatively styled. Most cars in this segment are arguably overstyled which can be off putting to some. Also it seems to have really good visibility, which is getting harder to come by. Other than that, not sure why you wouldn't just get an outback or something else. AWD has never been appealing to me. I think it's more marketing than anything else. I'm sure it helps with vehicle stability, but at the end of the day, good tires and safe driving make the most difference.

totally agree.. i worked in a industry 4wd and Awd was required and back in the day more vehicles ended up on the roof just as easy regardles.. modern stability control was a big game changer..

The Legacy is sold as Fwd trim in the world.. which cuts the maintenance and repair cost as people forget about these additional costs when buying especially when purchasing used which goes for any vehicle with a AWD or 4wd variant

AWD is a feature that is important to a lot of consumers out there. Especially the ones who live in climates where it snows or who live in zones that are mostly gravel. I chose an AWD when I had to trade in my FWD because I was getting stuck in snow during the winter. After my purchase, snow was not a problem. Don't confuse this with what you said: good tires and safe driving are important. Once your 4 tires hit black ice, there is really not much anyone or any car can do. Plus I have data in front of me that tells a different story than what you think: AWD is important to a lot of consumers.

I'd get an Outback. I like the styling. It is not available yet in Japan, but judging from the previous Gen it might be a very comfortable car. It is long though so my wife will struggle driving it :)

Except fuel economy! We own a 2017 Outback and now looking to get a more fuel efficient vehicle with AWD. I drive 30K miles a year mostly highway so I'd save a good bit with the Legacy vs the Outback. The XT version still gets 32mpg on the Hwy which is outstanding for a 0-60 in 6 seconds vehicle. We have the Outback for hauling and town driving and Legacy fits the bill for the Hwy miles. But you're right about all other aspects of the camparison!

What, Alex? This does not have disadvantages? Then why Subaru gaskets are so notorious? And oil distribution inside cylinder? Come on! These engines are notorious for high maintenance cost! In the upright engine you just pull the head, replace the gasket. Here, you have 2 heads, 2 gaskets and you need to pull engine out to do the right job

Sorry no more Subaru’s for us. The 17 XV Crosstrek is noisy and the technology is terrible. The boxer engine seems to languish in time. The only real upgrade has been the CVT. We will be turning in this lease in a few months. Will be looking at the hybrids now.

Sure the boxer engine is a different way of doing things, but not just as you put it. It produces smoother power with less inertia because it doesnt need as much external influence to balance the production of thatpower.

But it is not smoother, a Legay isn't smoother than any other mid-size sedan. It also has really really bad torque output and you need to rev that engine high to get any kind of power, thus producing a nasty and unpleasant growl.

No no no no. False. I have a legacy with the 3.6r engine and I do all the work on it. Spark plugs literally take 1 hour at most if you know what you are doing and have the right tools. Head gaskets have never been an issue in 10 years so get off that train. Btw the oil filters are on top on most new ones and the alternator, belts, battery, air filter,differentials, trans and coolant is easy to access. Do you own one? I have owned 3 subarus, legacy 3.6r, outback 2.5i and a crosstrek and none of the powertrains have been issues to work on.

@@Hallowsaw Drop your bull. They leak. For 20 years Subaru said, "we fixed it this time"; and yet, every time problem exists. No longer 75K miles issue but still an issue. About 135K for sure. You owned all these you say, but no mention that few years ago Subaru recalled engine blocks. In fact, my neighbor claims his Forester is on the 3rd engine and it is not an old car. Seriously, as Pedro said, I don't know anyone who had a Subaru long term and did not have the engine issues. Subaru is also notorious for parts freeze. This is when you are forced to replace 2 parts instead of 1 when they freeze together.

I daily drive an extremely capable Lexus GX, and am looking for a 2nd car. For me awd in a sedan isn’t a big selling point for me, and I would rather have a more luxurious, and fun sedan with a v6. At $35k+ I think you could look at something like an up-spec’d RAV4 Hybrid and get more ride height, cargo capacity, and fuel economy. Looking just at other sedans, I think I’d go for a V6 Camry, but I’d definitely stay away from Turbos and CVTs.

Funny how these guys are talking about other sedans now coming out with AWD but none of them telling you it’s only the Legacy that gives you standard AWD, has been and perhaps always will. Both Nissan and Toyota now introduces AWD on their sedan versions but you will have to pay about 2000 more for that AWD system. In addition you will have to settle for their base engines, not their turbo or V6 models. With Subaru it doesn’t matter, has been and always will be in any model and trim level standard. Save for the BRZ which is a joint venture between Subaru and Toyota. I respect and love Alex on Autos, he’s one of my favorite but most of them don’t tell you the whole truth. Ever wonder why the Altima is roughly about 2000 more than the Subaru? And the Toyota Camry is even higher in its base AWD version. Here’s the sad truth Alex, Subaru holds it value better than Nissan and right there with Toyota.
