Initially, I thought to compare it to the 2020 Toyota C-HR, but then I remembered from my previous review that the C-HR is a FWD meanwhile the Crosstrek isn't. In this video I compare the 2020 Toyota RAV4 vs 2020 Subaru Crosstrek. If you decide to go with the Crosstrek, you will save about $4,000 dollars whether in USD or CDN. But that means, you will loose some space and technology that the RAV4 offers since it is bigger and better equipped. The Crosstrek will give you some great features as well and a manual 6 speed transmission if you are into manuals.

This comparison makes more sense than you might think. We came down to the Rav4 and the Crosstrek and we ultimately decided that the Crosstrek met our needs at a significantly lower price. I can very much understand that many buyers with different needs than ours would be better off with the Rav4.

I ruled out pick-ups with a bed less than 6 feet (hint-hint Ranger) and the chop-back utes (4-foot bed? are you kidding Maverick?), automatic only models (you lost me there, Frontier; it's been fun, but it's over now), and as for the remaining one, Tacoma's driving position was terrible in 2005 and it has only gotten worse. After winnowing the SUVs against what I actually need (I'm not working out of my personal any more) and started deeper research into the SUV market. After winnowing out the automatics, the three cylinders (Really? Haven't driven one of those since the flirtation with a two-stroke SAAB) I found that the Crosstrek was the best fit: big enough for a couple of elkhound-size dog kennels, room on top for a grooming stand and tools, or a tandem bicycle, and singles including recumbents, or carrying grain and dog food inside and a couple of bales of hay on the roof rack. By this point I was shopping between the Crosstrek and the Impreza, decided I could give up the 50-pound rated load difference and save a couple of grand getting the Impreza, so I started test-driving. As you would expect, the space and accommodations were almost identical since both are on the same unibody, but the higher ground clearance in the Crosstrek made for significantly easier ingress/egress and roof carrier access is all right with a small step-ladder. I don't know how much longer the 2023 Crosstreks will be available and for 2024 the redesign has a touchscreen that would be more at home on the living room wall than inside a compact car, and there will not be a manual option. My red 2023 Crosstrek Premium is promised for April delivery. I'm shopping the dog-friendly accessories in the catalog now. By the way, the Subaru branded pet bowl is listed at $50, so an old kitchen mixer bowl set might be a good investment. 'Dash won't notice though diva Stella will probably balk. Get your Crosstrek while you can still order the 2023 model!

I really loved the crosstrek but I thought hmm more cargo space would be nice since I have kids I was looking into the RAV 4. But unfortunately the RAV 4 doesn't come in manual which is minus for me. Rav4 may be taller but the Crosstrek still has more ground clearance. Important for when your on rougher trails. I've gone camping over the weekend with three others in my Crosstrek. It was a little tight, but was enough space to hold the three of us plus our gear.

The Crosstrek also has aftermarket support that offers skids, rockers, bumper bars, winchmounts, and a rear locker. Use a roofrack and/or hitchrack if you haul a lot of stuff. I can camp a family of 4-5ppl out of one of these.

I recently drove the 2020 2.5 L Crosstrek Sport. Subaru’s EyeSight now has lane-centering driving assistance which is significantly better, and the 2.5 L is significantly better than the 2.0 L.

I HATE the screen on the Toyota. I had the same one in my 2020 Corolla. It took up too much of the front windshield because it sits up so high. Just traded it in for a 2021 Crosstrek two days ago and I LOVE LOVE LOVE it! By far, one of the most fun vehicles I have ever owned. Also, having AWD is a bonus!!! My kids are grown so I don't need a bunch of room in the back to cart around a bunch of junk! My only regret is I wish I would have ordered my car (I got the Premium model) so I could get manual transmission but all in all, I am very happy with my purchase.

I purchased a new Outback in 2017, had RAB and many electrical problems from the start. After only a couple of months I had the car in the deanship for repairs. The dealer only deleted the PC history, did nothing to fix the problem, and does not supply the needed paperwork to prove I was there. This practice is still going on today. The service tech brags, "as long as I work here, no one will ever qualify for Lemon Law protection " Problems got MUCH worse. In for repair 10 + times, towed in 4 times. After contacting Subaru customers support, they said because the dealer refused to supply paperwork for your visits, they refused to refund my money for the Lemon the sold me. Car was traded in, because it would not work, still under warranty, still not fixed because they didn't know how to fix it. Lost well over $14,000 because Subaru does not stand behind their cars, or the customer.

We own a 2012 XV that towed over 1700kg in over 2000km in 4 days camping, we treated that car like a 4x4 and took it off road. We had a back suspension problem when it was already out of warranty, to our surprised our Subaru dealer had it fixed without us paying a penny, probably believing it was factory problem, but for me I think it was all because how we used to drive it. Now that 8 year old car is still running smooth.

I followed the Rav 4 redesign all the way from concept until launch back in late 2018. I test drove it, I knew every feature and trim level, and was wanting the Adventure grade. I then test drove the Crosstrek... The Crosstrek honestly feels like more natural of a drive for me. The $13,000 price difference between the brands sold me on the Crosstrek. I'm up in the mountains most weekends (Southern Oregon, USA) and driving the Crosstrek feels second nature. The features and maneuverability of the Rav are not worth $13,000 more IMHO. For those of you crying about the CVT, just maintain the thing. I'm coming up on the CVT fluid change at my 30k mile mark. Normally people and dealerships say you don't need to change the fluid, but it is well documented that changing CVT fluid improves transmission life. Team Crosstrek

Coming from a car that is a glorified lawnmower, a Crosstrek is actually a little faster than mine. What really sold the Crosstrek for me is symmetrical AWD. When I did some research into CVT vehicles, I find it's really not that big of a deal for me. I wanted something that wouldn't leave me stuck in the snow, and if my vehicle is just a little slower for that then that's okay with me.

I own a Subaru legacy and while in all honesty it was not my first choice because of Subaru's sometimes spotty reliability, That being said I purchased it with a 10 year 100k bumper to bumper extended warranty and I have zero regrets with Subaru's AWD. Not just that, while some Toyota's are more reliable than average it varies across models and the year (ex. Brake recalls in recent Camry's) Not a one size fits all. The only issue I had with my Subaru is a dealer software update that bricked the infotainment system but that was replaced for free. The one issue that Subaru's boxer engines do suffer from is leaks which the powertrain warranty does cover for 5 years 60000 miles, but it's something to be aware of especially for the Forester, outback and crosstrek

I’m surprised more reviews of Subaru’s do not discuss how the AWD of the Subaru is severely negatively impacted by the CVT. This is very important due to the limited number of manuals& not being offered anymore. Also, not only is the impairment of the CVT off-road significant, the impact on the wear & tear of CVT’s when used off-road IMHO should be mentioned.

I expect to keep the seats folded, but there is an interesting and obscure observation to be made: I had a '74 Dodge Coronet (marketed as a "midsize" but by EPA total passenger and cargo space a "large" car in those days) in the late '80s, and the Impreza 5-door and Crosstrek (identical numbers) have more passenger space as well as more cargo space with the rear seat up than the Coronet sedan. My 2023 Crosstrek should be at the dealer in April.

My wife’s 2013 crosstrek consumes oil like crazy. Only has 73,000 miles and we can’t even drive 1,500 miles without adding a quart of oil to it. We’ve babies this car since new and it’s a headache not to mention terribly uncomfortable seats and harsh ride. Will be trading it for a 2021 Toyota RAV4 very soon. Toyota has never let me down, they are the superior car in my eyes no question. I will never own another Subaru ever again.

Tried both including the RAV 4 Hybrid. In the country the non-hybrid Subaru was better economy than the Hybrid RAV4. and bought the Crosstrek. The build quality and interior and ride of the Crosstrek was much superior. As this is my wife’s car there was no comparison. The Crosstrek was easier to drive and the EYESIGHT is easier to know if it is working. The cameras on the Crosstrek are awesome, better than the 360 deg camera on the RAV4. And there is NO WAY I would take the RAAV4 on the beach through deep shingle and sand like I did the Crosstrek today (with only 250km on the clock)

This is not a good comparison. The Rav 4 should be compared to a Forester. Also, price was not even in the discussion. I believe that the,Rav 4 is much more expensive than the crosstrek. Also, what engine was in the crosstrek? If it is,the,2.5, I would take the crosstrek hands down. If it is a,2.0, I would take the Rav 4. The Subaru 2.0 is,as gutless as a snail. I own one, so I do know what I'm talking about. The only way that I would purchase,another 2.0, is if I was going to get it for my kid as,a first car. And it would not be a crosstrek. The main reason to avoid the Rav4 is the moose test. Even a Kia Sorento Pig outperforms the actually 'dangerous' Rav4. I do wonder with the Rav4Prim if the result will be different considering the two motor configuration and the much heavier and lower centred battery set. The crosstek performs well enough in the moose test. I should state that Toyota has addressed the issue via software but you have to ask for the update.......... kzbin.info/www/bejne/roS1dH18eNKpis0 I would assume that the moose test is now standard and improvements would be passed to the Rav4Prime automatically. (ASSume)

Yeah the trunk space in the Crosstrek is a joke. Forget about shopping for Christmas gifts or shopping at bulk stores if you want to hide stuff in the trunk. The trunk is so small that you wont be able to store much and still be able to pull the cargo cover closed to hide your stuff. Also forget about taking a trip where you need to pack a lot of luggage or stuff for a picnic for more than two people and want everything hidden in the trunk. The hybrid version is even worse.

@@dl8704 yeah it's all a matter of perspective and individual needs. But for me I need trunk space and I don't like things sitting in the open. Bigger trunk space means bigger vehicle and that changes the the dynamics of the vehicle. Just wish the battery in the PHEV didn't take up the trunk space though.

We have a tiny Suzuki SX4. We use a Yakima rooftop box for more weatherproof, secure cargo space when we need it. It only costs us about 1MPG on the hwy. It's full-width, and long enough to fit a 6'6" surfboard. A half-width box can leave more rack space and/or a sunroof useable. We also have a folding Harbor Freight trailer that our cars can easily pull. Ours is 1000lb capacity, but HF offers one now that has about 1800lb capacity. I use ours for hauling things like motorcycles, golf carts, ATVs, lumber, 4x8 sheets, soil, sod, masonry, flooring, etc. The hitch also gets used for a 4-bicycle rack. Rooftop cargo bags can roll up small and stow when not in use too. I even saw one that can flatten and stay on the roof when empty. The bags just aren't lockable, and generally aren't as weatherproof as the boxes. It's nice to have many capabilities like a bigger, expensive SUV/pickup and still get 30MPG+, when unladen, without trashing an interior. Many SUVs/pickups don't even have the 1800lb payload capacity of that HF trailer, and replacing the "bed" if it gets badly damaged is usually just the cost of a 4x8 sheet of 1/2"-3/4" plywood.

@@RKmndo yeah, but I don't want to keep a rooftop box on my car all the time or bring attention to me when I travel. Also a little hassle to access the box on top of the roof. Also I don't want to haul a trailer. But it's give and take. I have a Yukon Xl that fits the bill for travel and hauling but nice to have something smaller when I don't need that much space. The Crosstrek is at the other far end of the spectrum when it comes to storage space which is too little for me personally. But I guess for a daily driver or day trips it'll serve my needs mostly for two people and I have my Yukon XL to fall back on if needed. Nephew has a Crosstrek and he is thinking about getting a roof box.
