Dan Edmunds, vehicle evaluation director, takes an off-road adventure in the 2020 Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro, which has been updated with creature comforts such as a 10-way power-adjustable driver's seat, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto support, additional USB ports, and more.
Where's the best place to explore these features? How about the challenging trails in Moab, Utah, and in the high mountains outside of Ouray, Colorado? The TRD models can get through especially challenging spots because they have a lockable rear differential, a configurable traction control system with multiple terrain modes, and a crawl control system. The four-wheel-drive system has low range, and it is easy to tiptoe carefully over rocks because the powertrain's throttle response is precise and delicate in this mode.
We've always admired the Tacoma. But it missed out on our highest ranking because daily-driving factors weren't where they needed to be. The 2020 Toyota Tacoma has been noticeably improved in many areas. It may not be enough to climb into the top spot, but the refreshed Tacoma is now much easier to recommend.
More About the 2020 Toyota Tacoma:
It's a bit early for a full redesign, so it's no surprise that the 2020 Toyota Tacoma is in large part a continuation of the third-generation truck. But it's still worth waiting for. Toyota's engineers have deployed several targeted improvements aimed at making it a better daily driver, and all of them move the needle.
There are extra USB ports, brighter LED headlights (with cool sequential turn signals), a new grille, and thicker side windows to dampen wind noise better. The transmission's shift calibration has been tweaked to reduce gear hunting.
The Tacoma's reputation rests on its off-road prowess, which is more than just marketing hype intended to lure those who like the idea of outdoor adventuring but never quite get around to it. Those types of buyers are certainly among those who are drawn to the Tacoma. And if they could bear to risk scratching their prized possession, they'd discover there's not much it can't do right off the showroom floor - especially the TRD Off-Road and TRD Pro models. But even here Toyota hasn't rested on its laurels. These models can now be equipped with a forward- and side-looking camera system to help the driver spot obstacles that are otherwise hidden from view by the truck itself.
As ever, this truck's very design shows that Toyota is dedicated to making the Tacoma excel off-road on rocky terrain. The basic approach, departure and breakover clearance angles are generous. And the lack of a front airdam on Tacoma TRD Pro and TRD Off-Road models gives them even better approach clearance ahead of their front tires. The lower eyes of the rear shock absorbers are tucked tight against the rear brakes where they're out of harm's way.
We've never been huge fans of the Tacoma's driving position, which suffered from the truck's high floor and the seat's very basic fore-aft and recline adjustability. The new 10-way power driver's seat (standard on every V6-powered Tacoma) changes that dramatically. Tall drivers can drop the seat more than a half-inch lower than before, and shorter ones can raise it about 1.5 inches higher. What's more, it's possible to tilt the seat bottom to optimize thigh support. Though this doesn't sound like much, this seat makes a big difference. Our last wish is for more telescoping steering adjustment.
The other main enhancement for the 2020 Tacoma is the introduction of a new touchscreen audio system. The screen itself is larger and clearer, and we like how the menu shortcuts are now physical buttons instead of indistinct touchpads. Best of all, it now supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration. Toyota has also designed the touchscreen so that you can mix and match smartphone audio and map sources with the factory built-in ones. In most vehicles, engaging Apple CarPlay or Android Auto locks out any other integrated system.
2020 Tacoma Pricing and Release Date
Toyota hasn't announced pricing or availability yet, but we estimate the Tacoma will cost slightly more than today's model and range from around $26,000 to $36,000. We expect it to go on sale in late fall or early winter.

To everyone complaining about the seating position, I had a 2015 TRD Prerunner before some drunk driver slammed into me and totaled it last Friday and I literally drove across the country from San Diego to East Lansing Michigan 7 times and it literally never gave me a problem. Granted I’m 5’11”, but still had no problem adjusting the seat for a 40 hour drive. Then again...that’s just me and I’m only a little above average height. Glad they fixed the issue for other owners to appreciate now 🤙🏽👌🏽 Excited for insurance to help me get a brand new Taco💕

Ranger 175 couldn’t be happier with my 4runner. Depends what you need. If you want more room and seats for family or passengers with still a lot of room in the cargo area with the backseats down the 4runner has plentyyyy of room and I fit so much in there. If you need a bed and need a pickup truck get the tacoma. I just chose the 4Runner cause I lug around drums a lot and wanted my gear protected inside the vehicle rather than a bed of a truck but I def want to get a tacoma one day alongside my 4runner. And weirdly enough, the 4runner feels more like a truck sitting upright and being able to see. You can see in the tacoma but it feels more like sitting in a car cause the floor is so high so your legs are more straight and outward and up with less headroom and the non telescoping steering wheel compared to the 4runner which has that and always had the adjustable powered seats and telescoping steering wheel while sitting higher up with more headroom but I’m sure if I bought the tacoma I would’ve gotten used to it by now but it’s def not as comfortable as the 4Runner.

@@squidusn71 Have you driven a '93 Toyota truck? Granted, it was a 2WD, extended cab long bed, V6. But my mother drives a 2006 Tacoma (yes, at 76 YO, and it's a 5-speed manual, 2WD), and the similarities are still there. I sat in a 2016 Tacoma and I got the same vibe of sitting on the floor. The cab looks squashed compared to my '16 Frontier. Wonder why Toyota addressed the seating position? Granted, for running around town it's not an issue, but I daily drove that '93 60 miles a day. It was horrendous. I don't know why Tacos are so smooshed. Yes, they sit high with the suspension, but inside it's cramped and low slung. Even owners know that and complain about it. Hopefully the 2020 seat height adjustments will help. I'd love to own one but my Frontier was $24750 (Desert Runner) and the cheapest Taco was approaching $35K in 2016. So I went with the Frontier and couldn't be happier (I don't need 4WD).

Love the green color, I think Toyota really need to look at doing a front locker with at least 4.56 or 4.88 gears for the gas engines and give the public the D4-D diesel engine's from over seas, then Toyota would be the best and I know for a fact that all my friends would get a Toyota pickup truck if it came with a diesel.

@@DanEdmunds Quick question. I have a 2015 Tacoma TRD off road 4x4 that I bought earlier this year with 50k miles for $25k. My idea was to buy this 2015 to hold me over until the 2020 came out. How would you compare the 2020 with the 3.5 liter versus Toyotas 4.0 liter that the old Tacomas and 4runners still have? Wondering if will I regret the upgrade.
@RecBuddha

There is already a recent TSB that improves shift points quite a bit, but hopefully they'll release another with the improvements from the 2020 for the older models as well! Sounds like they may have made some major progress (I don't want to get ahead of myself and say "gotten it right" as I'd imagine there is likely still more room for additional improvements).

Drove a loaded off road and a pro. They are nearly identical on the interior and the off road was a lot less $$. You could probably put your own add on parts on it for less. Unfortunately I wanted to add on OEM pro parts and I was better off getting a pro but the off road is a good truck too.

I love the Tacoma. I had a 2017 and watching this video makes me want one again. That is until he mentions the powertrain and then it all comes back to me as to why I got rid of it in the first place. To say the Tacoma is lacking in power is a huge (yuge?) understatement. The fact that the Tacoma is slow and underpowered could almost be tolerated but when they mate it to an even more awful transmission, it just makes for a miserable experience. When using cruise control, my 2017 Taco would downshift on every single overpass, bridge, or the smallest of hills or humps in the road. So you'd be driving and it'd be nice and quiet and uneventful and then you'd hit a slight incline and now you're at 5,000 RPM's! Just so the truck can keep that whopping 65mph limit speed you're at. And the lack of power was missed the most while city driving. There are a lot of city driving assholes so having to pull out or merge over in moderate to heavy traffic was a hassle because you know it was going to make the person you pull in front of hit their brakes because your Taco couldn't get up to speed in time. Oh and one more thing, the noise that the Crawl Control makes is completely ridiculous. Whoever at Toyota thought that was a good design was smoking crack during development. Why haven't they fixed that garbage yet? I mean this guy in the video thought the noise was so bad that he turned it off. It sounds like there is something broke or going to break on the truck. Come on Toyota!! Its laughable that yall cant make a Crawl Control or Multi Terrain system that's quiet like every other manufacturer.

Your review was probably the most useful review here from a user's standpoint. The lack of power and low seating position is what steered me to the f150. @@fska2254 I traded my Taco in for an F-150!! Lol. I owned 2 Tacoma's back to back and wanted to go the full size route. I was going to stick with Toyota and get a Tundra but I rode in my buddy's F-150 and felt that the ride was really good. So I test drove a lot of F-150's. I would drive the V8 and then some EcoBoost and really liked the low end power of the EcoBoost so that's what I got. I was and still am concerned about the reliability of the turbo stuff but I'll cross that bridge if I have to. What about you? What engine did you go with in yours?

@@BCORBAN7884 I found a F-150 (Platinum) with the trusty V8 engine. Within seconds, I knew this was the one because of it's smooth and effortless power delivery. It may not be as efficient as the ecoboost, but it gives me more peace of mind to not deal with turbo maintenance later. I'm very impressed with the comfort and ergonomics of the F-150, and also the excellent crash test ratings is what made me cross that bridge.
