I just bought a 2020 TRD Sport 4x4 and so far I’m loving everything about this truck. I was back and forth between the Sport and the Off-road. Eventually I settled on the Sport because I didn’t think I would go off-roading enough to justify getting the off-road. Yet, I wanted a truck that was just as capable if I needed to.

I went with the TRD Sport because it handles so well on the asphalt and is still capable off road. I deal with the stiffer ride. I also like the look better.

I sold Toyota's for years and I've had a last version Tacoma OffRoad, followed by two Limited Tundras *they are awesome, and now another TRD OffRoad (2020) with a six speed manual. All these trucks were completely problem free. The six speed manual TRD OffRoad is rare and I can tell you I love this truck the most of any Toyota truck I've ever had. You give up the crawl control for the 6 speed but its soooo worth it if you can find it and convince a dealer to make a good deal for you like I did. Goooo Toyota!!! The best truck you could ever buy.

I bought my truck to use as a truck, so I went with the Sport. I have a Yamaha for going off road. The Sport is the only Tacoma trim with the sport suspension, it is not the same as an SR/SR5/Limited. My truck is for towing and hauling and all else being equal, the truck with the stiffer suspension is better at those tasks. As a driving enthusiast, I also appreciate the better, firmer dampening every time I am on the pavement and going around a corner. It's not quite a '70's Cadillac but the Off Road is way too soft for my tastes. The one Off Road trim feature that everyone brags about is the rear locker but a diff lock that only functions in 4 lo is essentially useless to me. If the rear locker functioned in 2wd, it would actually be helpful in the winter. Nothing against the Off Road though, if you aren't towing and bought the truck for off pavement adventures, the Off Road is the way to go.

Off road: locking rear differential, better tires, skid plate, crawl control, bilstein shocks. Sport: hood scoop, color matched fenders, color matched bumpers, 17” wheels. Function vs form I think the off-road will hold its value more down the road.

I fav is the SR5, it’s just the best IMO. It has all the necessities and nothing u don’t need. The SR5 v6 4x4 MSRP is around 32k which is very reasonably priced. My most favorite thing on an SR5 is that it’s a key start rather then the button start.

I just bought a 2wd 2020 trd off road. Wanted the rear locker and ground clearance. I rarely go "off road" and don't live in a place where it snows. Ive always heard if you don't use the 4wd regularly then seals dry out and gets very expensive to repair. Im am thrilled with the vehicle. Edit....mine came with the aggressive durotrack tires....all 4wd's should have those tire imo.

TRD Off Road 4x4 by a landslide. I purchased a 2020 TRD Off road 4x4 and I put over 1,500 miles on it within the first few weeks driving it from CA to TX. It was the first time my dog has fallen asleep in a car or truck because of the smooooth ride. All the added features and mobility and functionality you can have makes it an easy pick for me. Nothing will stop me, Hahaha~!

Buy a SR5 + 3inch King Lift 33inch tires + Regear 4.88 and Locking Rear + Stringer Head unit. I did this and in my opinion best the TRD models. I'm also one of the FEW that hates the fake scoop.

If I was going to keep everything straight stock I’d stick to the off-road, but mods are half the fun! I have a 2020 4runner off-road and I haven’t gotten into a situation yet that I’ve needed or would use crawl control, and i live in the blue ridge mountains where snow and mud can readily be found. Not sure that I’ll ever use it honestly. Kinda like training wheels for those without 4x experience. If you’re doing any off-roading the lockers will definitely get you out of situations. But my wife has claimed it, sooo… I just bought a 2020 Tacoma sport 4wd simply because the dealer had it 5k below fair market value, with the money saved I plan on adding ARB lockers(1k)a low profile winch(1.5k) proper 3” lift with add a leafs in the rear for greater haul/tow capacity(2k) Upgrade to some 34’s and still come out money ahead given i would want to put all that minus the lockers into the off-road. Pretty sure it will take me anywhere my wife won’t let me take the 4runner!

I've owned a 2019 Sport 4wd for over a year now. I chose the Sport because I personally preferred the non functioning hood scoop, wheels, and painted fender flares and front bumper. The Sport also seemed to handle much better than the Off Road during all my test drives. The Sport can without a doubt go off roading but with better tires. Its very simple really, most trails are rated from 1 to 10. The Sport without the locker can easily do 1-6 but 7 - 10 you'll need that locker, but you also really need sliders, full skids, and possibly off road bumpers. So, if you're never going to do the really hard trails, then you'lll never need the locker. As far as Crawl Control I've found that its mostly a gimmick. Any 4wd can drive in sand without crawl control and if you get stuck just follow the instructions in this video below. @@gregsam3856 They're fantastic for offroading because the Tacomas 4wd system is so good on all their models. The only thing I ended up not liking about the Sport is the suspension . I was bottoming out too much and bouncing up and down, so I got a lift with Bilstein shocks 6112 and 5160's, and an add a leaf, and SPC UCA's, and its much better off road now. With good tires and a lift you can do a ton with it. I still havent needed a locker, mostly because rock crawling 1 mph over large boulders that will scratch, dent, and possibly damage your truck isnt my thing. I like to keep the speeds up when offroading.

I since got a lift, tires, and sliders. i can easily keep up with the Off Road drivers on trails. had a chance to try tacomas 2021 at work. in market for one when my current car gives in. TRD sport and TRD off road both 4x4: I tried driving them and see what's, up, the feel and etc. meanwhile both of the are satisfying to sit in and drive, i wanted to see the engine difference. When i took TRD off road and switched to 4hi, it felt like vehicle lost power and was not as agile as in 2hi. Mean while when i took TRD sport, and turned in from 2hi to 4hi, it gave the vehicle an extra kick, that speedy feel, noticeably faster acceleration and better speed maintenance at higher speeds. I did not test them in off road conditions, maybe TRD off road, has an edge there (how big and how it would feel to justify it, i have no idea), but as it currently stands. TRD sport 4x4, definitely feels much better and more interesting, and i dont think that the shocks, rear differential lockers, would really win your heart, when you engine under-performs in 4hi.

I don’t like the hood scoop only on the trd pro . My Msrp was $46k plus taxes no mark up. I didn’t want to settle for something less than the vehicle I traded in and the wait was worth it .

If I’m going to buy a Tacoma I’d rather just invest in a better build than something less .. and regret and not making sure It fits my needs on a vehicle choice . I work in automotive industry & understand the value of my truck is higher due to trim & rare build. Most ppl get a pre runner, sr5, limited, a trd sport .. etc . I wasn’t going to settle for those trim models personally it was going to either be a trd off road 4x4 prem pkg or trd pro I choice the trim because I’ll eventually upgrade to kings shocks & change out control arms & rear leaf pack and other mods . You should determine what your budget & trim you like & drive ..

500 under MSRP. But if you live in California expect to pay 1k's above MSRP for the foreseeable future. Shop around even if you have to cross state lines and you may find one close to invoice but don't be picky on color and features if you want to save money. I got mine a month ago in NJ for $2,783 under sticker. Also mines a 4x4 TRD Sport double cab premium I wasn't picky on color. The sports are harder find and you buy them before they hit the lot or you will not get one. So there more options out there for off-road models but still hard to find depends on area. Good luck
