If you want to go off-road, there is no escaping the taller seat height. The T7 is definitely not as extreme as some other bikes, I’d say it is totally doable.

For everyone wanting to compare it to a 790, just remember that during a comparison that bike bandit did, the 790 broke down. Another reviewer, whose name escapes me, said their 790 has been in the shop for a bunch of electrical gremlins. The 700 doesn’t have a bunch of BS and the CP2 motor is extremely reliable. The KTM is safer, of course, because you don’t get to ride it as much.

My 790 R has not had one problem. Coming off a 990 and then a 1290SAR it's the best of the three. 275 miles of range to a tank without a problem.

I have 55k on my Super Tenere 1200, and I have beat it to death, not nice to it at all. But I have always kept the maintenance up and she has never broke down or left me stranded. Same experience here, 45,000 miles on my 2015 Yamaha FJ-09. Oil changes, tires, a set of spark plugs, brake pads, a few chains and sprockets. Other than that just pure motorcycling goodness.

LOL honestly though, I get where he's coming from. California riding entails a lot of highway stints, and having the motor turning at 5, 6 thousand RPM at cruising speed feels unnecessary. I'd happily sacrifice my 6th acceleration gear for an overdrive on my GSX-S1000.

He isn't wrong though. The manufacturer wants to optimize for performance -- I want a relaxed fuel efficient top gear. Ah well, sprockets are a cheap mod.

I wouldn't want to gear up 1st though, which is what you're forced to do with a sprocket change. With a mid-size adventure bike, fully loaded for a trip, you're going to want that short 1st gear. Especially if you're doing anything off-pavement. Wish it was easier to change gear sets.

For street bikes this isn't usually a huge issue, a taller first is fine, but for an adventure/off-road bike I get it, sometimes you wanna be at crawling speeds.

For people with a loose/free gas cap. Just throw a leather or paracord strap on your keys. It helps you grab your keys from your pocket with gloves and when you get gas, just hang the loop from the brake cylinder, handlebar, lever... whatever. It's super convenient. That simple key loop gets as much use as my helmet or the actual key itself. Mine is just a small shackle bolt with a strip of thick black leather I stitched into a loop large enough to fit around my wrist if need be. Super cheap and easy to make.

Great video as always. Here is a lesson for new riders: watch what Zach does at 12:02. You should always keep your eyes open for cars coming in from side roads and driveways. Cars aren't always looking for motorcycles, especially in areas where the riding season is shorter than LA, so we need to always be looking for them. Stay safe out there!

I dropped mine 20mm and now that the suspension is broken in and I’ve found the settings that work for me I’m at 99% flat footed at stops. I’m 5’10” tall. I also went up 1 tooth on the countershaft sprocket and installed 1-3/4 inch bar risers because I ride 85% on streets of all sorts to include caliche and gravel. I love the simplicity and lack of as much electronic crap as possible. I have 3 windshields of varying height and width per application. Center stand, top box, tail tidy, anti bobble head and decat header and side bar protection from Hepco & Becker. One of the REAL positives for the T7 was purchase price! I paid MSRP Exactly at the Yamaha shop in Lufkin, Tx, $9975. Comfort seat from seat concepts is all that’s left for me and my T7 I believe will outlive me.

I LOVE my T7! It is so much fun. Best ADV bike out there. I followed and still follow the news on this bike. I am just now hearing the "bad brakes" comments. I think the brakes are great. You do not want sportbike brakes on a dirtbike. You do not want HD brakes on anything. I hear the suspension talk all the time and I agree. Would really like to see an aftermarket gas cap....hint hint companies. Wicked stoked when I saw the Zack and T7 icon this morning. A lovely treat to go with my coffee. Thank you.

Rode this bike at a Demo event. I am 5'6" 30 inch inseam. Was on my tip toes but it is manageable. Great bike, wish it had a little bit more power though like 80 ish.

CB500F has the same gas cap design. I put the cap on top of the pump when fueling, with the edge and key down. It works pretty well. There's no way I'm going to ride off and forget it -- because the key's in the cap.

Personally, I feel that the T7 is actually what the Versys 650 should have been in the first place, sans the taller seat height. I will definitely rate it as the #1 daily rider leaderboard. It's as comfortable for touring as the V650, if not better, and way way better for offroading than the V650. If only T7 is launched in India... which unfortunately might never happen 😭

Ive followed the development of the t7 since day one. Thank you so much. I have a 2018 klr650 and I love it to death. But 65-75 tops. It tough. I ride 60 miles a day on fast roads. Yamaha has the solution at a reasonable price point.

And for those wanting to know if you can ride it across the country, just know you can ride anything across the country if you are willing. I rode my DRZ on a 4K mile Look that included California, Nevada, Utah, Wyoming, Colorado, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona. It’s all possible.

The T7 has a button on the right hand handlebar to switch through the menu instead of pressing the button on the screen. The bike gets louder once broken in with a lovely sound especially on over run with a gurgling popping sound. The bike pulls great after 8k still plenty after 8k trust me lol. I’ve upgraded the rear spring to a 95nm and it made a big difference I’m 200lbs with out gear on. The breaks are fine. I have the Yamaha rear rack with passenger grab handles it’s great. I’ve added 2k plus of extras to my bike. LED plus turn signals, heated grips, outback mototek crash bars and skid plate, Center stand, bigger screen with wings, tail tidy, headlight protector, adventure spec mirrors. I like the bike it does everything well and it’s bulletproof. I would recommend oh and the tyres are great on road and in the wet.

I talked with a rider of said bike and found out that this engine, according to him, is one of the most bullet proof engines on the market. He had around 38K miles on his bike, had had it in for the standard maintenance checks (valve lash) and found that the lash needed no adjustments and it never needed any repairs, just routine lube and filter services. He had installed an aftermarket exhaust system which he said livened up the engine response and sound. He was, (guessing) 5' 9" and said that he had had a lowering kit installed the bike and doing so had had no negative effects on how it functioned. Again it appears that Yamaha did their homework and produced an excellent bike.

I commuted from Redlands, CA to Long Beach for college on a GSXR1000 k6. Rode on the 1, 405, 605, 22, 55, 91, 215, and 60 depending on the day and destination. Shorts and flip flops when it was warm, target bags over my socks in Sidi riding boots when cold. I use to dune in glamis in flip flops, shorts, and an NFL jersey. Almost died in a crash when a truck pulled in front of me. Funny thing, my road rash was the least of my pain. Shattered arm and wrist, few surgeries, collapsed lung, broke my other arm, and couldn't walk cause of torn groin muscle. If your screwed your screwed. I broke over half my fingers and had to have someone wipe my ass. By the time I was off heavy pain killers my road rash was gone and I was trying to rebuild strength in an arm that could barely move a few degrees. . Yet I still wear sandals and shorts when it's nice out cause it's the greatest feeling, and if I crash it'll be more painful but worth it. . No sandals were lost in the making of these memories.

There is one area we often agree with you and that is gearing. I generally like stock gearing but I would be more apt to gear up than gear down. I even geared up my 1987 KX500 I think dropped 3 teeth off the back sprocket left the front stock. I didn't always get the hole shot but I was always near the front of the pack at the first turn. I hill climbed with it and did very good. Raced moto-X, cross country and trails, I loved that bike. Advantages included less unsprung weight, less drive train weight, it also made the it a slightly wider ratio transmission and made that strong midrange motor just shine! and haul! The only disadvantage I can thing of was, I was a little bit more challenging in the the slow nearly sections, but I always managed fine and never had to replace clutch plates. I always had good luck with clutches and transmissions.

Great review! It's a very nice bike. After 40 years of riding, my actual bike (19th) is the VStrom 650 XT/2019. I live in the south part of Europe, Portugal; and for the last year I've been riding the Strom everywhere.... literally! Smouth, powerfull, very economic and very contactable for long, long rides with very LOW vibrations.... witch is something you can not say about the Versys 650...!!! I love ALL bikes! Now my ride is the V and I'm very, very happy with it!

Same bike I have here in the US in Michigan. I enjoy it. I have only had 3 bikes, a Honda 350 when I was in college and a "starter" Honda CTX700 then the VStrom. Of course every time Zach is riding a bike on this channel I decide I want THAT bike but the V Strom always makes me happy to get on. I'm only getting one or two rides a week in this time of year since I stay off it when there's snow on the roads. I think I'll be keeping the V Strom forever even if I get another for fun.

After riding a couple different bikes, I can agree that a flat seat feels better with two riders. With a raised platform my wife was always having to lean forward adding stress to my wrists. With the flat seat on my klr I can't even feel her there since she can just sit upright and scoot her hips right into mine.

6:53 my father in law is a mechanist and he said that is better to an engine to rev higher than lower under load. it's related to the oil pressure been higher when it's revving high. the oil film holds'up better.

Back some years ago I went on a KTM demo. The ride lead was rippin' it hard, actually. I obliged myself on an 1190 Adventure getting low on the curves. The lead was on the same, but the R model. I was quite surprised how far over that beast could lay, with TKC80's nonetheless, and absolutely rocket out of the bends into triples. That motor was so impressive. Won't forget that ride.

The headlight does look awesome. It almost appears as if the windshield is also the headlight lens. It really has a unique look that is also good looking. The rear tail / dirt bike number plate area looks crude and unfinished. Overall it does have a true adventure bike look.

I think a motorcycle like this one would be great in the city, I used to ride through the city since I grew up there but the road conditions are just a shot in the dark because potholes and roadwork.

Big part of the reason why T7 is not a "wheelie monster" is because of the elevated placement of the rear swing arm pivot (by design). Placing countershaft sprocket farther distance below the swing arm pivot causes the rear wheel to push down against the road surface with more force under power. Another benefit of this design is that the front wheel is forced down as well adding traction and directional stability up front.

T7 is perfect for me man as Im Old School and have zero use for todays riders "aids". Drop a tooth or 2 on the rear sprocket for long distance travel on the interstate and carry the stock sprocket in your saddlebag for when you get where your going if you plan on off roading. A GIVI Touring windshield, throw over saddlbags and the topcase and Im ready to boogie coast to coast and this, after 25 years on Touring bikes! Outstanding Job Yamaha! Here we are now in November of ‘23 and I’ve been riding my T7 for a little over two years and the only real complaint I have is the seat SUCKS. 30 minutes in and it feels like a 2X4. Thank goodness Seat Concepts makes their Comfort Seat for the T7!

A little larger windshield and gear it up a tad and you could ride it all day long on the interstate with some throw over soft bags. I swapped the motor sprocket for one with 1 tooth more and it’s now just fine on the freeway. I also have a tall windshield for those longer treks on the Highway and it’s really surprised me coming from a big touring bike. Needless to say I’m in love with the T7. As a former Trucker let me say thank you for the kudos, we don’t get any appreciation despite the fact that the whole country would stop without trucks!

Good review, took one out for a test ride and found the seat uncomfortable after 1 hours ride and the fork drive when braking pretty harsh. I wanted a touring come adventure bike. So no good for me. So decided on a BMW 850GSA, more refined and more comfortable although the 700T is a better off road bike then the BMW.

You totally forgot the V-Strom 650! I just rode the 2021 T& at Bike Week in Daytona Beach. It's quite tall, but it can be lowered 3/4 inch. Plenty of torque down low and decent power. Lackluster brakes and lack of TC plus hard seat put it behind the V-Strom, but very close, for 80/20 street/dirt riding.

Only bike where a loose cap has bothered me was my harley electra glide, because it doesn't require the key to be with it. Left it at a gas station once, only realized 250km later... On the others, doesn't really matter since you can't ride off without the key anyways.

I drove a 61 Triumph with nothing but springs in the front end and scrub brakes on the 5 freeway often. You don't know what bad brakes are until you rode that with a rigid frame. It was an experience, fun but scary. Especially when the zener diodes tend to blow wiping out your lights at night.

Funny thing was out for a ride on my dirtbike yesterday and spotted rider pushing 2020 t700 down the road, stopped to help and was surprised that a total engine failure at 3k miles! I was going to buy one before I got my gs800 adventure. Now t7 is on my drive waiting for my new friend to pick it up and get it to the dealer.
