We expect utes to be cars these days. One day when they’re soft as teddies to give all comfort and ride quality, we’ll complain that no one builds a proper ute anymore as they’ll fall apart. If you want a car, buy a sedan or SUV. Jeeeez.

@@mushimushimushi9176 D-Max been around a while now. Why are they rarely seen in mining industry in Australia ? Isuzu trucks are common, D-Max is not. All Hilux, Cruiser, Ranger. It's all about R&D for a market. Obviously Isuzu are targeting the city crowd who drive muddy puddles on the weekend or tow the caravan. Isuzu and Canter trucks do well in sales in mining. From my ever fading memory I have never seen a D-Max dropside Ute. If there is such a thing, stick 1000kg of equipment in the back and test the chassis on real time rough, dusty work on corrugated inland roads. We have an old 2008 Dual cab Hilux carrying 1.1 ton of wireline equipment for over 2 years now. Drive 8 or 9 hours to a hole over blacktop and isolated bush then idle the engine all day, every day to keep the batteries charged to power winch and computer gear. On a good contract you could do this about 300 days a year. D-Max has not targeted for work such as this. In saying all this, D-Max is an excellent vehicle for it's targeted customers.

@pistolpeds4 жыл бұрын
Are you saying that the 3L Isuzu engine, if powered to the 2.8 Hilux equivalent may become unreliable or short lived ? Seems like a cop out to me. Engine bottom ends today are pretty well bullet proof unless you are still producing an old engine block design that has reached it safe limit of development without redesigning parts of it or all of it (Ford Barra). Heads are more a problem today (older Nissan Navara ) . Once a brand has a bad rep then it's becomes harder to recover it's credibility. Reliability is key in the 4x4 market. Isuzu saved a heap using this old, reliable engine with acceptable power for it's target market. They'll sell a heap of them.

@@pistolpeds now the trend on diesel engines is downsizing, diesel engines manage really high pressures caused by the way the diesel works. What Isuzu says is that their engine is big and stronger to support over the time the hard work those engines are put on.
@pistolpeds4 жыл бұрын
@@ernestorivera3936 I will not disagree with you. The trend to downsize and turbocharge diesels today has many people predicting a shorter life for them because of the higher pressures and efficiency of them. Fuel economy is paramount for families today where the budget is tight and maintenance on these types is so high and costly. The days of big, simple, underworked, low rpm deisels used almost exclusively to make a dollar are gone. Now everybody wants one including mom. My issue is not with the Isuzu engine but in my interest, the whole package under constant remote work service.

If you currently drive a 3.8L v6 or 4L straight six GM or Ford car around town you may as well drive one of these tanks. It's only when you hit the open road you see the difference in fuel. Serious 4x4 trekkers spend a mint on their toys as well as fuel and they don't care. A small percentage of 4x4's get off the blacktop. I get 10km per litre around town and the same on the highway in a '94' 2.8L intercooled turbo deisel Pajero (rotary pump, no computer) with 480k km on the clock. My old 379k km 2002 AU Falcon gets 6km p/L around town and 12.5km p/L highway (through higher gearing and converter lock). Modern common rail has made deisel a freaking complicated nightmare. The Toyota test drive was noisy especially when you accelerate like it was stressing out it did not feel refined.The steering felt lite like I was not in full control of the road ,and on Sydney roads it was very bumpy & jittery . I don’t think I can justify 70k for the the Hilux,I was actually very disappointed with the drive I have been waiting for the new Hilux to purchase. I was always prejudiced against the Isuzu, but when I tried it, I was very impressed. They're very equal pickups, but the Isuzu tows better and is better on road and trails, while the Hilux had better axle articulation off road. The Toyota is tough, but equalled by the Isuzu, maybe beaten. The main difference to me is cost of ownership - the Toyota is way higher to buy and run. Yes it hold value better, but in the UK the Toyota is crazy money. If you can even get one in 2021! I'm driving Isuzu now and won't go back while we're still running diesel. Maybe Toyota will launch a better electric system, but I suspect they'll be beaten to that by Ford/VW. Can you imagine Toyota's profit margin on a Hilux at £45k!? I don't like being ripped off.

Guys being a Road and Transport safety expert, not enough is put on the safety features of the D-Max, it now has the best safety features in its class, it is seriously amazing for the price.... lane changing in a big thing in utes with blind spots, ie: could be the difference of a prang especially with the amount of peanuts still using there mobile phone or being distracted talking etc so as mentioned to me the D-Max bang for bucks is the better vehicle by a long shot....

Did you guys even check the tire pressure in the tires vs manufactures spec??? I know the dealers and tire shops love to crank up the rears because they know people will laden their vehicles without checking they have enough air to support the weight they have added. That will give any ute a "harsh" ride.

Should have compared the Isuzu Dmax X-Terrain model as it’s more comparative in price!

Timing didn't work out. But before we knew the HiLux's price increase for the 2021 model, the LS-U and SR5 were virtually identical on price. SR5+ - as we've made clear - is a non-essential step up. That's what we got on the day, so that's what we went with! Cheers Matt

If that was the case then, it would be a no-brainer win for isuzu.

I need a bigger tray hence an Xtra Cab version. I also need to take family occasionally. Toyota still has seats in Xtra Cab whereas Isuzu doesn't. Unfortunately, as good as the Isuzu is, this will be a deal breaker.

Good review, Gents👍 Appreciate a comparison review of other competitors too - Amarok, Ranger, Colorado, Triton and etc. Also interesting to review and compare sales figures in OZ which Hilux has been dominating.

Matt is right if you pick up the great spot need few hours drit, rock rough drive. Probably any ute isn't a very good choice. Really depends how many hours you drive off road. Most of time tradie working on road not beaten track. I probably go with top of range dmax rather than hilux sr5+. I am top of fan of Toyota but this time isuzu did a good job.

So old mate says he feels the Isuzu’s lower even though the hilux has a lower ground clearance, awesome! Buying a BT 50 as bit cheaper than the d max and same car just with a nicer interior and exterior.
@duzevich12 жыл бұрын
I test drove the Dmax 2022 Xterrain and the 2022 Toyota Hilux sr5 last month and these were the main things I noticed. In terms of on road driving hilux felt alot more solid and controlled on road. Isuzu felt a bit lose and not as connected to the road. Isuzu was louder from inside and you could see the Bonet rattling. Hilux had a lot more pull and take off power. Isuzu seemed a touch more spacious inside with nice interior when sitting and driving. They were both nice to drive as you would expect being new cars. For looks features and space the Isuzu Xterrain. But for driving, controll and feel while driving definitely the Hilux. Both nice utes either way!! I went Toyota because of the drive which was my gut feeling in the end✌️

I’m upgrading my 2009 hilux Ute in the near future. I think what I learnt here is to road test both and pick whichever just “feels right” to me. I do like the reliability of the 3.0 ltr Isuzu motor tho.

Isuzu May not be the best pick up but 1 thing 4 sure All the public utility vehicle jeepneys that we have here are refurbish Isuzu engines from japan because of it's fuel efficiency and reliability specially the bc2
@Healthwithharry2 жыл бұрын
Isuzu paid you no doubt ..always loved the dmaxx, reliability..probably the only ute that peeps the hilux in reliability test..you indicated that the hilux had better toke, better height yet the graphics indicated otherwise..only being better at creature comforts and safety..I believe you gave the dmaxx the win though you should have called it most improved ute

Nice review, now we need to see the real challenge, Wildtrak 🇺🇸 vs X-Terrain 🇯🇵.
@sladewilson23794 жыл бұрын
Matt, the Hilux may feel more "Peppy" (responsive/powerful?) to you, however, the Dmax has been tested by several others elsewhere and found to be quicker than the new Hilux from 0-100. I currently own a Ranger bi-Turbo and I've driven the new Dmax X-Terrain, yep that low reving torquey Isuzu engine can give the impression that it's a bit slower, but it's just not.

Legendary "Isuzu Panther" from early 1990's was made to rival "Toyota Kijang" from 1970's both Made in Indonesia. And the Isuzu diesel is legendary, we still keep some and toughness of Toyota Kijang is equally the same legend, easy to maintain and robust Indonesian steel quality. Kijang itself means (Kerjasama Indonesia Jepang) collaboration between Indonesia and Japan, named as Toyota Tamara in The Philippines, and various other names in other countries worldwide.

Hilux - 279mm ground clearance Dmax - 235mm Which one will you pick for 4wd ?
@rhynoceros32474 жыл бұрын
Toyota quote running ground clearance unlike most other manufactures so its not really comparable. The Hilux like the Fortuner has 225mm ground clearance to the diff so less then the Dmax which is quoted as per ADR. However specs aren't always what they appear nothing beats crouching down and eyeballing the actuall clearance.
