On these knives with a stiff back spring, I found that it is best to grab the blade and move the handle instead of trying to put force on the sharp blade. Give it a try and see if it feels safer!

Thanks as always Rusty! These older Sheffield knives really are historic. Especially the 19th century TEW & The Richards always brings back childhood memories to many.

Beautiful selection of English knives. That Lambfoot is sweet! I really like the way they do their Barlows, always thought they were done right. Thanks for showing these gems. Take care.

Good to see your A Wright stag knife. The C Johnson and early TEW both are attractive knives too, their bolsters remind me of older style police truncheon handle grips. Good video - thanks.

The first two knives are fantastic but they are all gorgeous knives. I can't remember how long it is since I saw a Richards shell knife in that condition, we all had them as kids in the 50s and 60s, I still have a small jack from back then but it's lost most of it's snap. I found it in a drawer in my dad's workshop after he passed away, it had probably been in the drawer for 30 or more years.

I can't tell you how many people are familiar with Richard's of Sheffield knives - even over here in the States. A real piece of childhood history to many! Thanks Chris✌️

@@Warthogg1 They were cheap and cheerful but surprisingly good knives, the proof being how many old ones are still around even if yhey are a bit past their best like my one.

That Taylor’s is a real nice find! I’m up to 35 TEWs now. Those shell knives were, a bit crap, but they do remind me of my childhood. Whitby is on the Yorkshire coast, across the North Sea from the Netherlands. It’s famous for its abbey, for being the spiritual home of Goths, for jet mourning jewellery and as the port where Dracula landed in England, according to Bram Stoker’s book. It’s also home to Whitby Knives, who still exist, but now they’re knives are made for them in China. To answer your question, no. Almost all of their knives are carbon steel, and mostly C70. They do use 01, 02, some stainless and Damascus from time to time. As far as I know, there are three current tang stamps. The basic “A Wright Sheffield “, the candelabra, and the “made in Sheffield”. The Candelabra is now mostly used for Ashley’s special orders. I’m not sure if they still use the “made in Sheffield “ one, but I think that was more to do with the marketing of Sheffield as a city and marketing brand. I’ve not seen a new one since the Harrison’s took over.

Hey Slick! I guess the bat signal worked! LoL I tried to bring out the larger Sheffield knives for this one, including the Richards, which still amazes me. It's in such good condition & something I picked up for $9.99. Thanks for clearing up the tang stamp issue on the A. Wright knives, I would prefer the A.Wright name on it, but it's an awesome knife nonetheless. 35 TEW's is something for the record book! I still have quite a few Sheffield pen knives, but only 2 are TEW's, so if I count those & the Old Snapper, I'm up to 8 or 9. One Day I'll pull out everything from the "Made in England" drawer. Maybe 30 altogether. Thanks for the Whitby history, I remember you saying it was a coastal town in northern England with Dracula fame! Take Care My Friend ✌️

I have a two models order for the same one you bought; one with a sheepfoot and one with a lamsfoot blade in Stag. A while back I bought an Ettrick in Stag too. I like the gnarly looking and feeling handle on the Ettrick. I got a Buffalo Horn Peach Pruner Wright & Son model with the same blade stamp as yours has. When I questioned the reason for the difference. I was told some store orders use this stamp to signify there knives from other sellers. I guess you can say that makes your knife more unique or be disappointed not getting the A. Wright & Son blade stamp. I figure it is a personal decision to send a knife back 3,614 miles for this issue. I decided it wasn’t worth the trouble. Now; I know I’m not only one makes me laugh. Slick Slicers and Paddy’s Potato Peelers have made Sheffield knives more popular. They both get the credit for that; good or bad. That is pretty funny too. English traditional handmade knives have good points and some not so good points. Imagine making one knife by hand at a time and getting overcome with orders from America. I imagine they are working there asses off wondering how to keep up in their little shops never expecting this would happen. These videos shows old school methods of making a proper Pocket knife. 🔪✨😉 kzbin.info/www/bejne/aKrKhWt-ntOJd5o kzbin.info/www/bejne/i5a6eWquerSplac

Thanks as always for the great information Gizmo! Before the American Knife-makers got up & running in the late 19th century & early 20th century, nearly all pocket knives were imported from Sheffield England. So, I guess they've been busting ass to meet demand for a long, long time!😂... great videos! Thanks again Brother

Those two links are both from the Ken Hawley Collection on KZbin. A place I've only very recently come across. I've just watched the one on Hand Grinders. Filmed in 1979, it looks like people have been sitting at the same spot grinding knives for a century and more. A great source. One of the grinders says "I was the youngest grinder when I started and 30 years later I'm still the youngest". The end of an era.

Wow, that’s a cool collection of British knives! I hope I can pick some up someday. I had not heard of a couple of those brands so thanks for expanding my knowledge! Great spin around the block, I like the stag covers on the lamb foot. Great video!

Thanks RJ, The Sheffield knives are where it all started.. The USA virtually imported the majority of knives used here in the 1800's from England. Then as knife-makers/cutlers immigrated to the States from England & Germany in the late 1800's - the Renaissance of American made cutlery was born.✌️

One Day I'll pull out all my "Made in England" knives. This Yank can appreciate the English stylings, They did invent the Barlow after all!

Thanks Andrew, I figured with all the knife size restrictions, The larger knives would be discontinued sooner or later, I guess we're at that point now unfortunately. That Old Taylors' Eye Witness spearpoint is one of my "I'll never sell" knives & the CJ is so gorgeous with those ebony covers, a real worker & the most comfortable back pocket carry knife I own. That's also on the never sell list! lol Thanks for your input my friend ✌️

LoL Pete.. I'm as close to a hoarder as one can get! My storage room is filled with boxes, not to the ceiling, but at least 5ft high - everything from old Baseball equipment, trophies, & uniforms to every notebook/text book from Trade School. But, I think you have way more knives stashed away over there! You probably have over 100 just in Roughy's alone!
