Maybe I'm just old, but 30mpg seems pretty good to me for knocking on 400 horsepower and 4 wheel drive. Back in the 80's a Vauxhall Astra 1.3 would be lucky to average 30mpg. BMW are such penny pinchers in the UK. I've had a couple of 3 series in the USA and over there even the base model (which is the 330i there) has electric seats. Weirdly, heated seats are still an option that hardly anyone gets. I guess because you don't need them in 50% of the states it's easier to just make it an option that try to build the right amount with them by default and then figure out the logistics of where to send what inventory.

It was driven very lightly due in large part to restrictions and the traffic volume. It came with the optional m sport seats which have electronic controls and are very supportive. The sunroof for me is an essential - not possible in the m3, but then again this was about half the price of what folks are trying to get for m3 tourings at the moment. In terms of living up to the m badging, I very much like the fact that the original owner ticked the badge omission box hence no m on bootlid or wings. You can add extra info on the right of the centre dash display like torque and BHP and other things if you play around with the settings. (it's not as good as the Mercs for sure but it's decent). My M340i that I drive daily does around 500miles on a full tank of Momentum99 £80 with mixed driving. In eco mode the engine shuts off when you're coasting so being a mild hybrid does help. Before this I had a 2016 M3 and honestly my M340i suits the real world 100% better. The M340i can be a very rapid car then stick it in Eco /comfort mode and it's a perfect family car and the X Drive guarantees you'll be ok on any road surface... and at any set of lights no matter what's next to you. Only mods I've done is a JB+ box, springs and wheel spacers. My negatives... theres turbo lag at times and the gear changes could be more aggressive in sport plus. Looks wise mine is the shadow edition and I feel this looks a lot better. If you're thinking about getting one... trust me you won't regret it.

Good review James as always. I know you knock the fuel consumption, but I’d argue near enough 30mpg for a mid size saloon with 370 odd horsepower and 4 wheel drive ain’t bad, especially for a courtesy car that may well have done quite a few shorter trips and been driven fairly ‘enthusiastically’ 😂 most of the time. If it’s anything like my M240i, it’s not difficult to get 40 mpg plus on the motorway, so anywhere between mid 20s and low 40s depending how and where you drive. To me that’s pretty remarkable. Exterior: The fronts not great I agree, rest of the car is great and in the Blue 👌. Interior: The best display system in class, all screens integrate well and are easy to use. Driving experience: agree, incredibly quiet and refined, (which is a great thing!). Fuel economy compared to the E46 M3. Think of the advance this way. You get the same MPG as you did before, but with an extra 150hp odd. As an all rounder, And only 1 car in the garage, one of these as an estate, is probably one of the best out there. Comparing it to a Golf ignores the fact that new these are 2.9% for the moment, whereas you won’t get that on a used one, regardless of mileage. BMW do not support used sales. The instrument display is fine. It’s not perhaps as sexy as an Audi however, spend lots of time with it and it works, and the nav function in the middle works perfectly. The HUD (for which you need to spec Tech Pack) is washed out with sunglasses on so I tend to use that display in the middle. This is clearer than the directions on the iDrive screen. And on the MPG. The demo car I had, over 1k miles, averaged 36mpg. That car from Lovetts is well used, as most courtesy cars are.

Great point about the finance deal - that was a big factor in ordering a new one for me (m340i touring). Additionally, that lightly used 45k model in my experience won't be well optioned - 50 plus and they still didn't have everything i wanted on them. One point I'd contest though is discount. Anyone looking to place an order right now will absolutely be paying close to 60k. Maybe you got very lucky (or ordered a while ago), but most dealers i spoke to literally let me walk away only having offered a measly few hundred quid off. It took me a while, but i eventually found one that would honour the uk bmw site's advertised deposit contribution...and that was it. That was the best deal I could get by far - even sites like carwow come up blank on a search for this car (believe me, i tried). Every dealer i spoke to told me the exact same story: "we have pulled back all our discounts because we're still selling cars". It really isn't a great time to buy a car, new or used, but the 5% I did get, plus the great PCP deal just about made it worthwhile for me (and i was going to need a replacement car before the market is likely to normalise anyway). But yeah, for now at least, gone are the days of 15-20% discounts on new bmws!

@@tanget1337 Yep the market has changed. Witness the one year old Mini JCW I sold with 8k miles on it, and the BMW dealer which bought it from me now has it up for pretty much what I paid for it in September 2020. @@markscars1069 Sounds like you timed it rather perfectly! Congrats! I was happy to get the deposit contribution from the site at this point tbh - my initial experience seemed to suggest no one was going to offer even that. And at least the 2.9% is still available. I think this is the best BMW currently on sale. (Mind you, I am evaluating it as a daily driver, as the premium sedan that it is, not so much as the sports sedan it could be.) The last BMW I drove was an 80's 735i, which had pretty decent steering and was a good car, albeit a little tail happy.Mechanically, it felt like it might go on forever, with an absence of gizmos and plastic bits under the bonnet. Nowadays, I'd sooner have the Lexus SC430 I saw outside the corner shop across the road, even with its comparatively crap driving dynamics, than be constantly fretting over the next BMW repair bill. A pal owned a 635i back then, which was lovely. My solicitor still has his, in a very nice light shade of green. BMW's were truly aspirational cars back then. Gearbox tuned so much more aggressively than the old 340i (owned that too and put the MPPK on it - no compare to this). Wicked, precise and placeable on a B road. Calming on a motorway. Configurable to your taste in terms or damping, steering, throttle response. The B58 engine is super punchy until 120mph (allegedly) and then very decent thereafter (allegedly). Will smoke some very expensive competitors. 0-60 is also swift as hell (I have registered several 4 second runs in the estate). Lovely interior and packed full of cool tech. Truly love it. Great all-rounder. In its price bracket it's a fantastic package. Only gripe is the stiffness of the sports suspension on certain broken road surfaces.

BMW played with too much gimmick these days, and it is kind of unnecessary when the car itself is actually already very good without having to be all gimmicky. It's as if they don't have the confidence with the driving dynamics of their own car that they feel the need to give it digital instrument panel and gesture control and what-have-you. Come on, BMW, when your car still drives really rather well all those fancy stuffs are simply not needed. Good thing the iDrive can still be controlled with a knob rather than only by touchscreen. I'll be looking next year and will definitely have to give one of these a proper go though, I was very hesitant about my last car having a CVT but that thing (GS450h) was incredible- turns out the whole droney sound thing isn't an issue when the speedo goes round quicker than the tachometer! ☺

I have owned 4 new Porsches from the same dealer in the last 10 years and they don’t reply to my emails either.Very helpful when I go into the dealership but suck at replying to emails.

As BMW touring fan. i wish that you had reviewed that varient which is the G21, the saloon is the G20. Still a useful review of the cars strenghts and weaknesses, which for it's price are a bit of a turn off. I agree that putiing the M badge on it was a mistake, it does not drive like an M, then again i want comfort more than performance. As for the infuriating stop/start, if you can't switch it off, i just don't want one.

I've had the touring and saloon versions of 3 series in the past. There really isn't much difference to them.

@@ruk2023-- As a field service engineer i favour the extra load capacity of the touring as the rear seats in the saloon are not foldable. As for the driving experience i expect they will be very close.

@@Barbarapape Sorry, I didn't make my point very well. Really I was saying that other than luggage space, the cars are pretty much identical. I prefer the touring myself, but the saloons do have folding seats. I don't know if they are standard, they might be an option. Still not a patch on the touring for carrying stuff though.

@@ruk2023-- The folding seat on the saloons must be an option. When my touring was being serviced, they gave me a saloon as a courtesy car, and i cursed the fixed seats. Most things that are useful on a BMW are expensive options, no one buys a base model, that is how a £40k one ends up at £60k if you go too far on the options list. Being self employed does allow me to offset some of the costs, but BMW's are not cheap to buy or run if you always want one that has full warranty. after 3 years that is another expensive option.

Even though I've owned 73 personal cars since 1974 and worked in the car business for 20 yrs....I didn't open a KZbin channel reviewing cars because I won't kiss anybody's ass and my reviews would be highly biased, so most car companies would avoid me like the plague. Its a shame most influencers have to remain middle of the road with car reviews because otherwise, they wouldn't get cooperation from the car makers. In other words, plain English, a lot of reviews are FAKE NEWS! So, I appreciate your reviews and that's why I sub your channel Jay. You tell it like it is, and I appreciate it.

2 years ago, I got another car. I owned multiple 3-series before (E30, E46, E92, and F31). So I took a test drive in the new G20. And after that, a test drive in the Alfa Romeo Giulia Veloce. And OMG, the Giulia felt like the car BMW should have built, in handling and steering perspective. And the G20 didn't. Also, the styling of the new G20 didn't do it for me. To incoherent, too many lines and folds. So the decision was simple. I am so happy with my true sports sedan, the Giulia Veloce...

It's really bad for BMW that Alfa started making better sports sedans ...
