Despite waning sedan sales in the USA, Hyundai is doubling down with not just a new compact people-hauler, but a compact sedan with four distinct flavors. The run-of-the-mill Elantra, the eco-friendly Elantra Hybrid, sporty Elantra N Line and high-performance Elantra N.

@Ayush Malpeddi depends on the type of vehicles. Toyota and Mazda have been fairly reliable in the sedan and suv segment in the recent years. In the luxury segment, Tesla’s have been good from a long term powertrain reliability standpoint, they have small issues here and there but powertrain is solid. In the half ton trucks, Toyota leads reliability but Ford and RAM have better trucks with more capabilities.

Just bought a Hybrid Limited like the one here. I think it’s one of the most striking sedans around. Love the angular styling and grill with those headlights. And wheels seem to mimic the angular styling. Has a ton of great features, especially for the money. Interior very well designed and love the dual 10.5 inch screens. Only minor complaint is front seats could use a little more bolstering. Trunk very good sized. Getting 49 mpg so far but expect that to improve. Really love it so far. My other car is a Giulia Quadrafoglio but in a lot of ways like this car better.

One would think that a lighter vehicle with a less powerful drivetrain would achieve better fuel economy but the 225 pound LIGTHER Elantra Hybrid, with over 50 less horsepower, racks up virtually the same EPA fuel economy numbers as the significantly larger and more powerful Sonata Hybrid! My wife and I own a 2018 Kia Niro Touring (which we love) with essentially the same powertrain as is used in this new Hyundai Elantra Hybrid. We also just purchased a top spec 2021 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid Ultimate with the Solar Roof and all. I can tell already from 2 days of driving that this Sonata is going to exceed the "Real World Fuel Economy" of the Niro, hands down, in spite of the fact that I've slightly exceeded the EPA numbers for the Niro over 2.3 years and 20,000+ miles. This new Sonata Hybrid is really a pretty stunning machine overall and I can't wait to start logging it's fuel economy data into the spreadsheet I maintain for ALL of my vehicles. While I do drive conservatively, I strive to never impede traffic flow. I would however enjoy participating in a "Hypermiling" contest with this new Sonata.

17:50 I'm personally not surprised that you found the 2.0 liter base engine to be quieter than the 1.6 liter in the Hybrid. We own a 2018 Kia Niro SX Touring Hybrid with the same drivetrain found in this new Elantra Hybrid. Although we love that Kia overall, I do find the engine note to be somewhat coarse at lower revs just above idle, and I'm going to guess that it shows up most in the lower gears at between 1,500 and 2,000 rpm. Can't say for sure because there's no tachometer BUT the engine does actually smooth out as the revs climb. In actuality though, the transition between EV mode and Hybrid Mode when out on the highway is barely perceptible and certainly not intrusive. Having said all that, I was recently helping a friend source a vehicle and was particularly impressed by the lack of engine noise from the 2.0 liter normally aspirated engine in a Kia Forte with their "Intelligent CVT"; presumably the same setup that is in this new base Elantra. Likewise, I recently sat in, and ultimately purchased a new Hyundai Sonata Hybrid with what I believe to be a VERSION based on this same 2.0 liter 4 cylinder (albeit with the Atkinson Cycle). It too impressed me by how quiet it was when being operated sedately, compared to the 1.6 liter in our Kia Niro. Can't wait for delivery of our new Sonata which had to be specially ordered due to our choice of color and interior trim.

As a owner of a 2013 Elantra, I think the current model is over the top but it will appeal to a lot of people because of the value. Good review. Your comme t about sedan sales not being on fire is exactly because of designs like the elantra’s; the sharply raked rear glass reduces head room and rear visibility and mandates a small trunk lid making it that much more difficult to utilize the trunk space. No wonder folks are rushing to cuvs! I am a sedan guy, but, as i am currently in the market for a new vehicle, i am looking at sub and compact cuvs. Almost no car based hatches are available any longer and sedans have become so low it is difficult to see out of them or get in or out of them. Manufacturers have no one but themselves to blame for poor sedan sales as they axed hatches and made sedans less usable.

Only long term driving reveals weaknesses. On our elantra 2007 we had to replace the transmission completely. Known issue. Elantra don't have adjustable camber on their control arms. So you may sometime have to replace suspension parts. Timing belt, idon't know about 2021, but on 2007 its timing belt thus expensive to maintain. Very low wheel base, watchout for bump stops, and forget about light offroad… Elantra loose value fast when new. But over all, easy and relaxing to drive.. just expect to replace transmission (1-2k $$)

If you consider that the new Elantra hybrid shares the same platform as the Ioniq (engine, drive train, and independent rear suspension), it would make sense that the 2021 regular Elantra would be built on the same platform as the 2019-2020 Elantra, which also lacked independent rear suspension. So in that sense yes, it would make sense that the difference comes down to manufacturing, development, and tooling costs that they were able minimize by carrying over designs from vehicles that have already been in production in previous model years.

Curious how the hybrid model will perform at higher highway speeds. With the 4.19 final drive ratio with the .77 6th gear overdrive, the engine is going to be turning well over 3000 rpm at 70 mph and aboe.

Hey I'm just asking Elantra sport owners. I'm looking to get the 2021 elantra N DCT as my daily. How has the car held up? (Trans/Ac/Suspension/Electronics? Also how do you like Hyundai service? I'm only wanting to do a exhaust/BoV and hoping the warranty won't be terminated) I had a 2019 Camry XSE as my daily driver and the power was actually decent at 203HP + decent 8 speed trans and 3,290 Lbs. Toyota let me put a full exhaust/ bolt ons/suspension work and they never terminated the warranty. It was hit by a old man unfortunatly and totaled. I feel because the elantra is significantly lighter+DCT at 201Hp it would be faster and still decent mpg and more fun due to a more sporty suspension/tuning ect. Would you reccomend it as a daily or should I look elsewhere? My budget is 25-26k

Love most things about the Elantra Hybrid, but the fake gauge on the left and the fake window on the C-pillar might be a bridge too far.

I applaud Hyundai for swinging for the fences in terms of styling, but if I’m honest I find it fussy and awkward. Mazda3 would be my personal choice in this segment.

Why is it that only the American brands don't believe there is a market for these vehicles? Every other manufacturer still does and keeps improving the segment.

Because it’s too expensive for them to produce them, they can’t be competitive tech/price wise. The middle/lower class can no longer buy a new compact/midsize sedan from an American brand.

@alex on autos - very cool that the CVT here performs admirably. this said, I think Toyota's CVT performance varies by powertrain. The 169-hp 2.0L and CVT combo is much smoother, more natural to me than the 139hp ancient 1.8L. Toyota needs to drop that combo - not sure why, other than production change over and overall cost, they keep it. Could boost CAFE scores too... Thoughts?
@braetonwilson4296

Toyota keeps it to keep prices down. A lot of people just want a point A to point B car and therefore don't mind the 1.8 liter engine as long as they can save several thousand dollars.
@joec1774
@joec1774 3 жыл бұрын
@@braetonwilson4296 - Trouble is, for the same price as that antique-powered 1.8L Corolla, there are much better choices - like this Elantra, the new Sentra, the (admittedly hideous) Civic, etc. It will catch up with Toyota eventually; it used to build class-leading cars, now it builds cars to a price point.
@braetonwilson4296
@braetonwilson4296 3 жыл бұрын
@@joec1774 Much better? IDK about that. It's not like the base trim stripped down Elantra, Sentra, or Civic offers much. Heck, the base 2021 Civic LX doesn't even offer apple carplay and android auto. At least the base 2021 Corolla L offers both. Plus people who want cheap cars also want reliable cars and Corolla is the most reliable. That 1.8 L engine is bulletproof.

Alex, why do you and Sofyan love to bash on the Corolla every chance you get? Corolla's CVT with physical first gear is genius and yet you say Hyundai's CVT is better? 2021 Hyundai Elantra Limited comes out to 28K after you include taxes & fees and that only buys you 147 HP and a semi-independent suspension. How is that great value? Even the base Corolla L has multi-link independent rear suspension.

Not just the Corolla but Toyota in general (maybe except the rav4). Even Matt Marian said the Camry is lagging behind the sonata or accord now They say they aren’t but I know they are. They expect too much to appeal to themselves not what consumers want 🙄🤦‍♂️ They claim they aren’t Toyota haters but...

great specs, but the style is tough. and it's just too low to the ground. automakers just keep lowering sedan ground clearance and then can't figure out why everyone moves to crossovers.
