The orange lights on at the front really help drivers recognize it as a vehicle and gives info on distance and speed. Having a single white light blends in to all the other lights and could be any distance or speed and look about the same.

I must admit, when i was looking for my first "big" bike (2 years ago next week) this was a serious contender, went for the Street Triple in the end and and still very happy with my decision. Totally agree with the finish and the blue is great.

I don't like the idea of those indicator running lights either. A quick glance from a car driver on one side of you and they may decide that you are turning, and pull out.
@G58

Great point. This is an American idea that works there because they are used to it. But expecting UK BMW and Audi drivers to figure it out is asking a bit much IMO. This is potentially more dangerous than a safety measure. I can also see a likely legal excuse for bad drivers to exploit in the event of an accident.

Had one of the very first CB650R's on the road, superb bike. A couple of questionable components such as hose clamps etc whcih prematurely rusted but didnt prove to be too much of an issue. I also had a lot of false neutrals until the bike was over 1000 miles, after that I think it bedded in a bit, still have the odd false neutral but probably due to my lack of enthusiasm with the gear shifter. Only other complaints have been that the screen scratches very very easily, the paint on the screen mount is thin and chips easliy from stones and the exhaust will drag on the ground if you are pushing the bike to lean over. Positives, the engine is amazing for the price, really economical if you ride it economically, servicing and parts are cheap, and its a really fun bike to ride, from communting all the way up to sporty sunday rides. Most Ive done in a day is 450 miles through sunshine and rain on a mix of a roads and motorways and I was relatively comfotable with two comfort breaks and one fuel stop in between! awesome bike and would definately reccomend!

Thanks Andy, great first impressions review and love (as you know) the infamous fashion show at the end. It’s interesting as in Australia, for both the CB650R and Trident we only get the restricted version. The Honda being just an A2, however Triumph have made a version of the Trident just for the Australian and NZ learner markets (LAMS) so it actually produces around 53 bhp. Another interesting point is the price difference in Australia as the Trident is about 700 pounds more expensive than the CB650R... So this leads me to just one simple question (taking the dollars out of the equation) if you had to pick one out of the two which would be the winner for you and why. Thanking you in advance Sir for your answer. Keep up the great work! 👍😎🇦🇺

I have the full fairing version of this bike CBR 650R. I agree with you on the gearbox false neutral. I find the gearbox just requires you to give it a good positive shift if you get lazy and just softly kick up it tends to happen. Also Honda offers a factory quick shifter and it works great! All in all I love the bike.

I just picked up a 2021 CB500X yesterday and it has that same instrument cluster...I was surprised how well it works and is easy to see, even in the sunlight. The clutch on that CB500X seems like the clutch on this...weightless to pull but hard to get to that engagement point...I'm sure I'll get used to it soon. The one thing I'll give my CB500X credit for, no issues finding neutral. Amazing a bike can be in a crate at a dealer in the morning, assembled and me riding it home that afternoon and everything feels amazing on it.

I am a biker and a farmer, so to some degree can see both sides of the argument. Farmers do not enjoy driving their tractors on the road, they do it when it is necessary. We are sometimes inconvenienced by tractors, horses, boards of cyclicts, doddery old people driving eratically. I also live near a airship and on sunny days in non civic times we have swarms of noisy light aircraft buzzing about when we are trying to enjoy a BBQ. So I guess on this crowded island we have to put up with each other and be aware of hazards such as tractors. At least farmers are producing milk, eggs, bread etc.. This stuff is required year round.

Nice review. I quite like this bike. It didn't seem especially exciting at face value & often appears overlooked but it actually looks nice & has decent real world performance. It also no doubt has great Honda build quality & reliability too. It's probably more of a competitor to the Trident than people give it credit for. It's been out on a limb with it's pricing compared to the twins in this category for a few years until Triumph moved the bar with the cost of the Trident & the Honda's now very much been brought it in to play which is no bad thing.

As others have said, anybody that owned a 400/4 (me) will be attracted to this bike. As much as I love the looks though, two things would stop me from buying now; firstly I prefer 'stonky' bikes to 'whizzy' ones and secondly I like something I can pot panniers on. I think I would look at the Tracer 7. Great bikes though, I did ride one last year and it was fun. Let's all agree how great it is to be spoilt for choice

I've just passed my full category 'A' motorcycle test on a brand new Honda CB650R, and I did all my DAS training on various 2020 models at the Ride Academy based next door to Smiths Honda in Chester. I love everything about the bike, especially the sound, it nearly took my head off the first time I opened up the throttle! I like the 2021 upgrades, especially the front suspension and they've improved the dash. The Pearl Smokey Grey colourway is supposed to be nice as well. I can can get £500 off a new Honda motorcycle for completing their DAS course, so guess which bike I'm gonna buy! Well done mr Flyer! That gearlever arrangement is the same as the CB500! Maybe you did that film after this one? I have a -19 model and I've put just over 31000km on it...in old money it must be 46 stonesquarefeetlbs or something. Gearbox is smooth as cutting in hot butter. I lowered the footrests with a couple of brackets with 20mm offset. Made a hugh difference! And a slightly taller handlebar. My first long trip was a 550km ride in 6 hours in all. No problems at all. And 24km/litre is quite good. If I ride it as if it was a loaner, I can come down to 20, but that's hard work! It's a really good machine in every way. So good I bought one for my son, an A2 version. Fingers crossed next wednesday for his test! I recommend the CB650R for everbody.

I found it quite comfy and pretty nimble 'but' its transmission sounded and felt harsh...Of course the dealer said there was nothing wrong! but the problem, if indeed there was one, was planted in my mind. I sold it on and bought a Street Triple675R....infinatly superior.. Andy, you are so intrepid and dedicated to bring your thoughts on a new motorcycle in such awful weather conditions, not to mention the mud on roads...I seem to remember ''once upon a time'' farmers and builders could be fined for fouling the roads with mud and debris ....how things have changed.

Hi Andy - Been waiting for you to review the CBR650, great stuff as ever. I have had the 2020 model for just over a year now and I agree with most of your observations. Worth noting that the optional heated grips are fabulous, a must have item in the frozen north of Sweden even in the summer. I can confirm the gearbox is smooth as silk after 3000km and the optional quick-shifter (up only) is very slick too. Last thing, I know your bike was not run in yet, but you really feel the rush after 8000rpm and it pulls right the way to the red line. First track day of the season in 5 weeks, can't wait! Great first ride💖💖👏🏼👏🏼. I always find it weird that manufacturers loan out bikes for tests during winter. It's hard to really properly get an impression of a bike when it's freezing outside and you can't really do the normal rides through twistie roads. Especially the handling requires warmer temperatures fort proper testing.

I ride all year round so to me this is "real world" riding - I think it makes more sense than me attending launches at exotic sunny locations (which I always decline when invited for that reason).....
@Roy_Godiksen

@@TheMissendenFlyer I very much agree. The whole "press launch ride" thing is basically sett up for manufacturers to give a best possible impression of a new bike and I never trust a single word said in those things. Which is why I subscribe to you and other like minded channels. I'm just surprised that manufacturers lend out bikes during winter, in stead of, mid April to late September. I guess it is to show of the bikes before people start buying a bike for spring.🙂

Good review. Thanks Flyer. I hope to test one over the next couple of weeks. A couple of questions. Was the suspension hard on rough roads? Our roads are shocking, especially the twists. Where I live the CB650R is a couple of hundred pounds more than the GSX S750. The GSX is older school and Euro4, more ponies, rain mode and some adjustment on the suspenders. Slightly fatter rear tyre and needs a small screen. Which would you buy? (ps I also rode GSX S1000. Wonderful but too much for regular city riding...)

Never really paid any attention to that bike. Looks pretty sweet, only think I would look into is adding a tail tidy kit (or what ever they are called) to clean up the back. Being that it's a Honda, change the oil/proper maintenance and it will probably run forever.

I think the problem with the false neutrals is associated with the clutch lever adjustment. It is quite fickle and a bit of a problem. Finding neutral (when I want it) on mine is easy, however. Finish is still great after 2 winters.

I had my first ride on a big bike last Saturday and this was the model. Going up from my YS125, I was weary of this as I was expecting to be on something with a bit less power, like a Z650. But I was more than comfortable riding this machine. Looking forward to my full training in June, which will be on the CB650R, and then hopefully a purchase of a big bike soon after. Still not sure if this machine would be a bit too much for a first big bike, I was looking at the CB500F before I got on this one. Anyway, great vid as always 👍

When I was doing some rider refresher training I rode this and the cb500 preferred the twin. Found the four too buzzy with the revs having always had twins the four just felt strange. Also found the 650 horrible when around town at 30, hard to get what felt a smooth ride, very snatchy on the throttle

Much prefer this over the Trident and I'm a Triumph guy! both made in Thailand as far as I am aware. Prefer the Looks of the Honda all round. Brakes look better even if they are same performance, and there is no chance of the wife getting on the back of a Trident. I don't like the Tridents swing arm mounted reg plate and indicators set up, just going to get in the way of washing back wheel etc. The Honda's traditional mount could do with a tail tidy as you suggest but still prefer it. Trident would look silly with a Givi rack/ top box, Honda not so much LOL, something I always consider as they are so handy, must be my age. Thanks for going out down the farm tracks.

Great review Andy and I pretty much agree with all of your comments. I've owned mine for a couple of years now. For me, although a compact bike I find it a bit heavy and the seat height just a bit too high. Bear in mind I'm only around 5'7 with 29'' inseam and only about 11 stone. Yesterday I test rode the low version of the Street Triple R, and for me it felt a great fit. The Honda is a great bike but will be gone in a couple of weeks. Very excited at the prospect of owning the Triumph! Keep up the great work. Atb Trev 👍

TheMissendenFlyer Aren’t you able to set the number and style of ads? I’m sure you (and all KZbin channel owners) are very conflicted over this, because the more ads on your videos the more money you make. But have you watched your videos as we see them? Whereas the experience used to be a relief from commercial TV, it has now become like an even more intrusive goldfish version of the worst cable channels! And Despite all their algorithms which can obviously detect whether you’re contradicting official medical advice, Google/KZbin is totally incapable of finding a suitable place for inserting these intrusive messages. Are you aware that they frequently not only interrupt sentences, but even words? And the last one often interrupts the very last word of the vid! I’m sure I’m like many others who find this nonsense ruins the experience. But that’s their obvious intent, hence the regular invitation to pay for ad free KZbin. I’m equally certain that I’m not alone in neither wishing to pay for something that KZbin and Google promised would always be free, nor EVER click on ANY ad links. If you can find any way to improve the situation I’m sure it would be much appropriated. Unless it improves, I’m boycotting all channels with more than one ad at the beginning and one at the very end. Will check back in a few weeks. Cheers

I did my driving lessons on a naked bike in midwinter. No heated grips, so it was bloody cold. I then decided that I would need a bike with a wind screen to buy and I did ever since. There are a lot of naked bikes and also sport bikes in the Netherlands but you won’t see a lot of them riding in winter. You will see a lot more all road bikes and also sports tourers with wind screen, heated grips etc. The blue color looks gorgeous on the Honda. The back siderische ugly.

I used to own, actually passed my test on, the Honda Hornet, that this bike eventually replaced. Sounds very similar, and I only disliked the short gearing ratios common to 600s that are a painwhen commuting - I practically wore the toes out of my boots with all the shifting... but looks a good machine. What might help your reviews, since you always mention it, is a feet-up photo of you on the bike, to better judge the leg position and relative crampedness (or otherwise). Like the jacket, and a reasonable price by comparison!
