@@TerraMagnus Right. First Model T Ford used a straight four. twins aren't as refined, and don't rev up to 13-16,000 rpm. Which is the whole point for having a "sport bike". Twins sound like tractors. I'm not spending inline four money for a tractor.

I have had this very black one for a week and i feel more safe on this bike than i did on my previous duke 125. I could not imagine how easy to handle this bike. so easy to maneuver this bike despite being 200 kg. So smooth like a dream. it looks elegant and sophisticated. It is an awesome bike. I hesitated between this and triumph trident but honda won and it was one of the best decisions of my life. But i don`t think it is a beginner bike. If i had started riding with this bike i would have died somewhere in the mountains.

Did you test drive the Trident? I'm in the same boat as you were but wondering how different each one feels (no chance of test drives here for a while). I've seen videos where the Trident is called "more compliant" (with road imperfections, etc.) and others where the Honda is lol. Also that the Trident's brakes are "meh", and others where they are "just as good as the CB's".

@@efrainl They have the same brake and suspension. Both are very compliant. I think when choosing between the bikes your taste your heart and your habit how to ride a bike will decide which one to choose. As for me i like how easy to handle the honda at low rpm and it is fast at low too and above 8000 it gives a thrill. No one can be wrong about these ones.

picked up the 2020 model for my first bike. just hit 2000 miles on it. comparing it to my gf's mt-07, this bike is quite muted at low rpms. with that said, the feel of the inline 4 is buttery smooth. as a daily commuter it works VERY well. as a beginner on it, the power to me is very approachable as many newer riders don't get the bike that high in the rev range. with that said, starting from first gear and getting the thing going there is a noticeable torque dip between 3-5.5k rpms. as you get to 6k the power comes on strong. its not bad if you aren't wide open, but it can scare you the first few times you hit it while searching for speed. i found it most notable when down shifting to 4/5 gear and rolling on the throttle on the highway. all in all. very fun first bike. don't need more power. cornering feels good. at 6'1" 175lbs, the ergos are a little tight. suspension is firm but well sorted (MT-07 ride is sponge almost bouncy). tl:dr-good first bike, good forever bike. do recommend.

Would you recommend the CB650R to a complete beginner? Cuz I’ve been debating to either go naked or cruiser type motorcycle. I have already taken a drivers course for both car and motorcycle but still have no experience due to covid and lockdowns. I just watch some tutorials on KZbin and I get the principle of a manual transmission bike, but would you say that the CB650 is good starter bike?

@@athanobnial8254 pros and cons of it. Pros: power is low at lower revs which makes it great for a beginner bike. As you gain experience the higher in the Rev range you get the more character it brings out. Gear box is great. Very stable at speed. Good suspension. Cons: bike is rather expensive for a first bike. Breaks are aggressive and numb, during panic situations things may get dicey. Due to the tuning, at 6-6.5k rpms the bike acts different. Torque comes on aggressively and can scare you. Long story short, it's a great bike both for a beginner and experienced rider. Everything on it is solid. Honda reliability and quality. It has a ton of character when you want it. I love it for my first street bike. I ride mostly on the highway at 70-75 mph. If you do more city riding and keep your speed below 50mph I would suggest another bike. Not that the cb650r can't do it. There are just better bikes for that. Better for gas, torque, fun, comfort.

I plan to get it as a first bike just because I can grow into it and still have fun on it compared to starting with an R3 or Duke 390 you could grow into it pretty quickly and later on upgrading to a bigger bike but still forgiving as a beginner rider. For new riders in Europe, I have one (2022 model) restricted to 35kw (euro A2 license, it dynos at around 38 whp when restricted) and it's fine in town and small roads, but once you reach 120 kmh (75 mph) it struggles to pull ahead. It reaches around 160 GPS kmh (100 mph) after a while, and after that it wont really accelerate any more on level ground. The bike is fantastic, good quality all around, feels nice, sounds good even on the stock can, and looks gorgeous, but using it for traveling while restricted can be a bit frustrating, specially when passing other vehicles on the motorway. Here in Spain most people travel at 120-140 kmh and if you're on the passing lane and someone comes in hot behind you, you sometimes want to get out of the way faster than the bike can accelerate. Also, the seat is awful for long distances. Got it with the upshift quickshifter, works well abobe ~3.5k RPM. And yeah, I would still get it, I've done 6000km in 8 months and absolutely love it. Just hold off big travels until you get it de-restricted.

Tested an non-35kw before buing mine. I feel the same issues with the the speed on highway with 35Kw. Here in Switzerland it's limited to 120km/h (ppl go at 130km/h) it's an "smaller" issue depending where your country. I felt more the smaller air intake with the 35kw limitation to be an issue on really slow speeds (I ended putting more gas), after one year of using mine it's no more an issue but I never put in neutral without checking the screen it's to subbtle when you wear motorbike shoes. Do you still have the 35kw kit? or do you finally could remove it?

W zakrętach trzymaj zawsze łokcie luźno poniżej serca bo dużo osób mówiło, że słabo skręca, a wina leżała po stronie kierowników 🥸. Przez pierwsze 3tys km był bardzo twardy w kwestii zawieszenia, potem zachowuje się jak "mały turystyk, który nie jest tak mały jak się wydaje". Osobiście polecam założyć szybkę Givi taką dymioną w kształcie Y, bo przy odpowiednim ustawieniu będziesz leciał nawet 170kmh bez efektu urwania głowy na co cierpi każdy naked. Moje średnie prędkości przejazdowe są zawsze powyżej 130kmh. Po więcej info zapraszamy do grupy CB650R/CBR650R, znajdziesz nas na Fb. Pozdrawiam

Mimo dużego doświadczenia jestem ciągle zdziwiony tym co potrafi, mogę porównać go do ktm 990 smt który od 0kmh do 180kmh jedzie idealnie tak samo, a przypomnę że ktm ma ponad 110km. VMAX w CB to zależnie od wiatru 225-245kmh.

Fellow 2020 cb owner here. When you opened the bike up, you only got a little of its power. This bike's primary power sits near the redline. If you shift too early the midline power loss will eat your takeoff acceleration. Try running through all the gears only shifting at 12k rpm. You'll appreciate its power a lot more.

Awesome review of the bike. As an owner of a CB650R you couldn’t have said it better from the clutch feel, brake feel, gear shift, fueling etc and your wheelie attempt looked like one of mine hahaha which makes me somewhat proud of myself. Love the bike to bits and I think it looks awesome just a bit disappointed that the wheel HP is down to 80-81 compared to the brochure HP figure of 93.

I've been looking at the GSX-S750 for a second bike too, I love the way the CB looks, but Suzuki makes more sense for me. The most common complaints I hear are usually the looks being a little dated and the halogen headlight but non of those things bother me really, and I've already seen people just stick an LED conversion, and on one of my older bikes I replaced all the incandescent indicators with LED equivalent, popped in a flasher so they don't blink fast and done. So who knows I may just get one unless I get a stupid deal on something else, but I'm in no rush to decide. 😃🏍

Most of that is down to adjusting the controls to you, and putting on better brake pads. Once you do that, I've found for me, the CB is just about the perfect motorcycle.

@@joelohne3559 im on my 2nd year on the CB650, yes you get used to the fueling, but that dosn't mean its good, its still feels abrupt, there is deffo some not smooth on/off throttle going on, also at certain RPM's is like the bike dosn't know if it wants to go forward or stop. I think this can be said for most new FI bikes in general, this Honda is not exception, a custom fuel map would be a great upgrade. Im hearing the the block off plates mod helps quite a bit witht eh on/off feal and also makes it sound better.

I've had mine now for 2 years. It's still like new from the showroom. You didn't mention the thing that most annoys me about the bike. That is, the vibration after 6,000 rpm. It seems to vary from bike to bike.

I own a 2019 and an ecu reflash and tires fixed all the gripes I had with the bike. The stock tires were garbage and never gave me confidence in riding the bike. The ecu reflash woke the bike up completely. The emissions in my opinion almost ruined a great bike.

That didn't sound like a glowing endorsement: questionable low-speed fuelling, inexact clutch bite-point, difficult to modulate brakes and an iffy seat. Against that, it's great looking and well-made and it's a Honda. Maybe someone could put me straight if I got the wrong impression. I was hoping for some more tangible improvements for 2021 to get closer to the Aprilia for instance. Good review as always. Thanks guys.

Like I mentioned to another commenter, if you adjust the controls and put better brake pads on this bike it will feel much better. As far as the fueling, I have a 2020 and have not noticed any problems with that. Alot of times in these reviews, some of the problems that are discussed are just adjustment issues. With the seat, this is the only motorcycle I have no problem with the stock seat, but everyone is different. I would suggest a test ride to find out how this bike feels to you. I sure Love mine.

I recently got my big bike license after riding 250cc and 400cc bikes for years, and I’ve been looking at mid-sized bikes. I’ve limited myself to the Japanese big four because I live in Japan, and the European brands are simply too expensive to make them value for money, whereas the Japanese brands are certainly value for money on the shop floor and in the maintenance garage. I rode a Honda CB400 Super Bol D’or for a few years, a premium quality, fared in-line four, a super popular bike here in Japan, which sells for around $10,000, so I was immediately interested in the CBR650R. When I went to see one at a local Honda dealer, I remember looking at it for the first time, but then a CB650R in matte jeans blue catching my eye, and, I have to say, I was set aback at how good looking it was. In truth, I don’t think I’d seen such a good looking bike before. It was awesome looking. It made the CBR650R look kind of ordinary, and that’s saying something. So I ended up taking both bikes out for test rides. The CBR650R seating position is more leaned forward, with it having clip-ons, but not as far forward as super sports bikes. But I was surprised just how sporty the seating position was on the CB650R, too. It’s quite leaned forward for a naked bike, certainly much more so than the MT-07. The engine is certainly more powerful down low than I was led to believe in-line fours generally are. I was getting decent pull from around 4,000 rpm, and shed loads of it from 6,000 - 7,000 rpm, and I was very impressed when I opened it up in the low rev range in 3rd gear. I had to grip the handlebars and brace myself. It really pulled a lot more than I was expecting. These are fast bikes, with decent mid-range torque. Be in no doubt about that. And the scream from those pipes when you let it rip. I’d not bother with an aftermarket pipe, to be honest. These bikes sound fantastic. I haven’t decided which bike I’m going to buy yet. The 2021 Yamaha MT-07 and 09 or new Tracer 9 haven’t been released here so far, and I won’t decide until I get a look look at them. I wouldn’t buy an MT-07 over a CB650R. The Honda is simply a better bike in terms of build quality, suspension, brakes and looks, and it’s fast enough to have a lot fun on around town. It also blows the MT-07 out of the water in looks. The new MT-09 sand Tracer 9 are a different matter though, with that CP3 engine and their very nice electronics package. Here in Japan, there’s not a lot of price difference between the CB650R and the MT-09, and if you’re not that concerned about the looks, the MT-09 does look like a very sweet bike in comparison. But if I choose a more sedate riding life, in and around town, with the odd weekend blast in the mountains, I still might go for the CB650R or the CBR650R. When I finally get to see an MT-09 in person and don’t gel with the looks, then I’ll go the Honda route. Fellow riders tell me that I will get bored with the power after a while, and while that might be the case, I doubt it, and there’s no chance I’ll get bored with the styling. These bikes are beautiful. There is simply nothing in the mid-range category that comes close to them in styling, in my opinion of course. I’m just sorry you guys in the US can’t get the matte jeans blue or the red options for the 2021 models. They’re the two best colours by far.

Fellow Japanese rider here! Limited myself also to Japanese brands. Had a MT-25 for 2 years and half and just ordered a blue CB650R. The bike is sooo beautiful as you said. Your CB400 must have been super fun to ride. That Vtec is quite unique and so pleasant to the hear. I also think 400cc is really good for the narrow roads of Japan. The MT-07 is something I never envisioned because the bike is everywhere in Europe (where I come from) so I didn't want to come here I'm Japan and have the same bike as everyone from my country lol. But also the engine of the CB seems more tame. The CP engine is fun but I don't want a wheelies machine as it doesn't fit my style. The only issue of the CB is the fuel consumption which is quite high due to being a revving I4. Anyway have fun!

So the power on this bike... It's for A/A2 compliance. The regulations state that as long as a restriction takes away no more than 50% of an engine's power, it's legal to restrict to 35kW for A2 compliance. With peak power at the crank fixed at precisely 70kW, Honda can appeal to both the unrestricted and A2 crowd. To that end, I suspect more power could be available with a retune, but that might require more extensive modifications than most of us are willing to carry out.

You mentioned your height but not your inseam. I’m 5’8” with a 29” inseam, I think I would be fine with the CBR. I had the F4i for several years and liked it very much.

I have a '21 Rebel 300 that has the same issue with trying to go slow and it surges all over the place. Bike is getting sold, can't stand it. I'm sad to hear it's a company thing and not just one model. I really like these CB's

As a CB650R owner I’d probably say the trident altho I’ve never ridden it but I’d still go for the CB650R as it looks classier and more grown up. Oh Honda reliability and dependability too.

Both great but Triumph is known to make unreliable bikes. Worse than Harleys. For that reason alone, I'd get CB650R. CB650R looks way better anyways imo.

just a little info. this is not made in Japan. it's made in thailand and so is the quality of this bike. here in Germany you can find rust on new cbr650r and cb650r bikes (0km). :-(

That is one handsome bike. Too bad it's about $1,000 too expensive ($9,200) for what it is. I mean, if Triumph can make the Trident for around $8,100, which has more features, then you would think Honda of all companies could sell this for $8,000 flat. At that price point, they would have a clear class leader (tied, of course, with the Triumph Trident 660). But damn, that is still one cool motorcycle! 🤙

@@grumpysquid Rider modes, more compliant suspension, better low-speed fueling, superior OEM rubber (the excellent Michelin Road 5 tires), plus the industry-renowned Triumph build quality and attention to detail (though, to be fair, Honda is known for that as well). ... Oh, and it's over $1,000 less expensive; which, at this price point, is over a 10% difference. Don't get me wrong, the Honda is an awesome bike that I would be more than happy to own. But, if I'm spending my own money, it's the Triumph Trident 660 all day, every day. P.S. - I love the name. "grumpysquid"? Awesome! 😅

Awesome bike. I believe that’s under the back seat near the fuse box. I have a 2020 model so mine doesn’t come equipped with but I’ve seen on Facebook group discussions about the socket. Check it out.

17:45 it’s literally a pandemic of how many people HAVE to go on their phone at a stop light. I never realized until I started riding, but it’s absolutely unbelievable. I get that it’s a red light and they’re not moving, but it’s unreal how **many** people need to go on their phone during a red light. I think there’s probably more to be said about the condition of humankind to be on their phones all the time, I’m here watching a 20min video of a bike I don’t particularly care that much for, but I’m about to have an aneurysm thinking about all the people I see on their phones scrolling thru IG at a red light bc god forbid we go 30 seconds without stimuli. This one triggered me real hard just now.

I really like your review, we've just got our one. I'm not that experienced even though I have had my bike licence since 2011. I think this is a great intermediate bike to get confidence without being too intimidating. My only other bikes prior to that was a 250 kawasaki ninja 250R (2008/2009)and a kawasaki (2016) erf650. This definitely feels like a step up but not too big. So pleased with it so far. Does anybody know where the usb port is under the seat? I can't seem to locate it?

I planned on buying this bike, but my only issue is seat and seat size. Seems to me that this is exclusively one-person bike. Any feedback on riding with passenger (avg size) on this bike? Both wife and I are 177 cm (5 ft 10).

i can't speak explicitly to the cb650r, but I own a cb500. Obviously not the same, but the chassis should be similar. I'm 6'2 and my wife is 5'6 and she fits fine on the back.. I imagine a passenger would fit fine on this bike although not comfortably for more than an hour or two

I test rode and found engine sewing machine smooth and wonderful sound.....transmission shifted perfect. It is low on torque but overall great machine- just can’t get over new rear end styling of all these new bikes- looks unfinished to me

friction zone doesn't change. maybe because the lever is so light (which most people including me like) you can't feel it from the lever asobviously as one feels on other bike. I don't see a problem, you can get used to it and it's comfortable.
