Time for the 2500ish mile break in oil change.
I would have taken it to the dealership for its initial but I'm not currently living in the same state, and there is no reason we shouldn't do it ourselves.
6.5 Quarts, filter element, 35mm wrench, large drip pan and ramps.
Any questions please feel free to ask. Thanks for watching

The 35 you’re referring to is the torque spec in Newton meters of the oil filter housing which is about 26 Ft lbs. The size of the plastic “nut” on the filter housing is a 27mm. You’re correct it’s a 17mm oil drain plug and the torque can remain the same but not over 30 Ft lbs with the new crush washer. Another trick to pouring the oil from the gallon jug is to pour it sideways instead. This keeps it from gurgling or missing the funnel and more control. I learned this in the 1970’s when pouring antifreeze into a radiator and of course there were no spouts then but sideways kept it from spilling all over the front of the car but found this useful when dealing with gallon containers of oil too. The only other socket required is a 10mm to remove the bottom plastic skid cover plate.

Just a suggestion, leave the shield off until to verify no oil leaks. Then bolt it up. Hard to really verify leak with shield on initially. Just my 2cents.

Is this car eating oil? 6.5qt went in and only about 4qt went out! Yes, I made sure car was warm before draining, yes I opened the drain under the hood, car was sloping a bit back at around 15-20 degrees (where the plug is), yes waited 10min or so for all oil to drain and even poured half a cup of fresh oil to "flush" a bit. Is this normal? Thanks. P.S. Regularly check oil levels and did have to add oil in between changes, but not a lot. Never saw an oil spill under the car.

Used a Napa oil filter on my telluride and the rubber o ring was a tad bit thinner and had the oil leak out of the oil filter cartridge! Put a oem rubber o ring and fixed the problem! Don’t know if it’s a problem with all the oil filters or I just got unlucky ! Just a heads up

I just did another oil change and was having the same problem, just replaced it with a NAPA, I believe I was using WIX before. Visually the o-ring was bigger so I’m hopping it was a design issue with the o-ring and is fixed now.

I really hope you are not a mechanic to use a fractional socket that down the road is going to mess up the filter housing. It’s actually a 27mm, also it takes 6.9 qts per factory specs !

The post that the oil filter goes on is where the small o-ring should have gone correct? Not in the cap but on the vehicle end. I am going to do an oil change here in a few days and I will find out. Great video

Is not an o-ring, it’s an aluminum (best I can tell) crush washer for the drain plug. The filter has an o-ring installed in it out of the box.

Do not over tighten the plastic cover. I noticed a white line-up mark on the housing and oil canister. I use them as a reference so I don’t over-torque it. I did purchase a canister in case the original becomes brittle from heat.

Thanks! My wife just got one today and the oil housing is really the only thing I'm not crazy about. Other than that, it looks roomy enough to work on for a minimally intelligent DIY'er like myself.

I love the thing, I’m sure aftermarket will make an aluminum skid plate for it to protect it but 95% of the time it’s going to be on the road, you can’t beat it.

Thanks for the comment. What your seeing is the bottom of the housing, it has a pour spout cast the engine side of the assembly. It does look like it but rest assured it is not, pinching this o-ring to that extreme is practically impossible with this setup.

No, only part that is a little inconvenient is the skid plate, but as you can see it’s really easy. Any grunting or groaning is strictly from my failing back and knees, haha.

Im doing my Telli same, diy oil change at 2500 miles, got bad experiences on my previous ford escape.. for 2 years i kept on bringing it in to the dealer to do maintenance oil changes.. to my surprise when i finally did it myself due to covid last year, a lot of my bottom engine cover screws are loose tread, 2 is missing and the area where the oil filter sits and drain bolt is nasty sticky as shit! These dealer mechanics don’t even clean the area around where the oil drips! Hoses, etc are all dirty from years of oil drippings while doing oil changes..

Maybe more oil on the oring would keep it from binding up like that.
@mechanicvance2480

Thanks for the comment, if you look at my gloves there was residual oil on them so a light coat was applied just not what we’re used too. While a more may have helped with seating the housing if you polymer on polymer contact of the threads almost immediately starts binding on re assembly. A bit of grease may ease this but the polymer shouldn’t require it and who knows how it will react in the long run, a few more changes and the high spots of the casting will smooth out. Thanks for watching.
