I feel like there is still some confusion over Robert Crumb. The superchat question was incorrect. Robert Crumb did not create Felix the Cat. He created Fritz the Cat (yes it was originally a comic strip). Crumb was against the movie but signed a contract (via his wife at the time) giving rights to the filmmakers to use the character. He talks about this briefly in the '94 documentary.

I feel like the purposes of the animated sequence in the third story of the french dispatch was to suggest that it wouldn’t make sense for a written play-by-play of the sequence to be published in a magazine, so it was published as a comic, like the narrator had said happened earlier in the story. I understand the criticism that it would have been cool to see the sequence in live action, but I don’t think it’s fair to say it wasn’t for artistic purposes.
@randomness9282 жыл бұрын
I took it similarly to how when they wanted to show the character’s war story in the second segment, so they showed a stage adaptation of his story, because it wouldn’t necessarily make sense for frances mcdormand to go into his whole story.

Small language/history/Shakespeare lesson: Currently attending grad school to study Shakespeare and I nerd out about this stuff, so a small correction: Shakespeare did not write in Old English, he wrote in Early Modern English. Most Shakespeare you hear is "untranslated"...because translating Shakespeare is honestly weird to do because his language is not much different from what we speak today. There are, of course, some obsolete words (thou, forsooth, feeze, etc), but Early Modern English and our own Modern English are not that different from each other. What makes Shakespeare hard is not necessarily the words themselves, but how he arranges and structures them. Shakespeare IS hard, but not nearly as difficult and impenetrable as untranslated Old English. Old English fell out of use around 1170, almost 400 years before the birth of Shakespeare in 1564. Early Modern English lasted from the late 1400's into the 1650's, where it was replaced by our own Modern English. For comparison, here are the first two lines of Beowulf, untranslated from Old English - Hwæt. We Gardena in geardagum, þeodcyninga, þrym gefrunon, Here are the first two lines of text from Macbeth, "untranslated" from Early Modern English - FIRST WITCH When shall we three meet again In thunder, lightning, or in rain? Not much different from what we say today, just in a peculiar order to fit a verse line. Nearly all Shakespeare you see is "untranslated" because, well, there's nothing to translate. His language is mostly our own. I remember being in a production of The Winter's Tale and talking to someone after the show who said "Wow, thank you guys for translating the text to normal English. It was so easy to follow." We didn't change a thing in terms of the language (outside of cutting stuff for time), it's just Shakespeare is much easier to follow in performance than he is to read. TL;DR Shakespeare wrote in Early Modern English, not Old English, and you can't really "translate" him since Early Modern English and Modern English are very similar to each other.

Best and saddest ending ever museum? Yes, The Mist definitely belongs there. I'd also like to add, of all things, the James Bond film most people probably haven't seen (No, the original Casino Royale isn't included), On Her Majesty's Secret Service - which also happens to be one of the best Bond films - and perhaps the most Bond of Bond films. It also features the best "Bond girl" of all, who matches JB step-for-step, if not being more than a match for him. Check it out. Oh, it's dated - but in all the right ways (if you're in that type of mood). The ending, though. One of the best. Just... yes.

I'm pretty sure the animated action set piece of the third story in the French dispatch does have artistic intent since it was very clearly stated to be a comic strip drawn by the newspaper cartoonist brought to life. Considering how every part of this movie is supposed to represent a part of a newspaper, it seemed pretty in theme.

I've said this before in the Sardonicast but in Last Night in Soho's defense, it's not a bland or "by-the-numbers" horror film. I really liked this film, and I've watched it 3 times. I was invested throughout the film, even if the 3rd act wasn't all that strong. It's not a scary, like a jumpscare-y movie, but it's more so the 'reality' of it what makes it scary or darker than most thrillers. It's showing you the dangers of romanticizing the past and it's a really nice to see a movie that tackles that. The film is a very stylish movie, the soundtrack is amazing, and it's nice that Edgar Wright is trying something different and still maintaining his style. I prefer this movie over Scott Pilgrim vs The World, it's Wright's latter half of films he's directed but I still like all his films regardless cause they are all uniquely entertaining. I still hold it as a 7.5/10, it's not great, but a really good, and unique film. I still can't wait to get it when it comes out on DVD.
@paulelroy66502 жыл бұрын
Jumpscares arent scary any one who wants them doesnt understand horror. The first 2 acts were good for the most part the 3rd really dropped the ball. Its not creepy or unsettling the humour isnt on the same level as his best stuff. The look of the modern day stuff isnt as great as the 60s stuff. And I think matt smith was wasted to be honest. The acting was good the use of music was great but aside from the cinematography in the 60s stuff it was a step down for him. What makes it unique to you?

It's easily one of the most beautiful films ever shot, but I really struggle to understand what they're trying to say about Diana. That she's a victim of circumstance, sure, but the film's determination to present her as if she was just a regular schmo before she became a Royal feels really disingenuous to me. Tbh a couple turn offs for me when it comes to your streams/longer form content would be a) how easily you get triggered by chat (come on, you should know better) and b) how preachy you can get. You know movies, you're good at talking about them, I think it'd help if you stuck to that.

it's great that you think it's okay to judge people based on emotions they have no control over.

I wish Adam would watch/review more “everyday movies” not all the small independent movies that 90% of us will never see and you all know you won’t
@ygsr2 жыл бұрын
He reviews a lot of mainstream films, what's the point of doing more? Everyone already knows about them. Isn't it better to help people find films that they otherwise wouldn't?
@etalex70742 жыл бұрын
Actually I watch most of them, as do most people who could be considered cinephiles. Almost like that’s more the target audience.

How is Quebec nationalism dumb though? We statistically are losing our native tongue, how’s it dumb to try and keep it alive?
@notscotthenson2 жыл бұрын
Because your native tongue is dumb.

Having a 56-year-old woodsman's face paired with Scoot's voice of a 15-year-old makes his comments less annoying.
