They only reason I bought a DRZ is because no one has made a replacement. I think many of us want a low maintenance dual sport with DRZ power, capability, durability, and fit and finish. The 300’s aren’t it and the high performance 450/500 are not it.

I'm pretty convinced he will never find a machine that he likes. Most of his complaints are so tiny or not even real. It takes you minutes to warm up? Why? I just turn it on and go. The 30 seconds it takes me to duck walk it backwards out of the garage is enough. Gearing an issue? I just spent an hour going between 75-80 mph (128 kph) on the highway with stock gearing. I do wish it had a 6th gear but it did the job without complaint. The steering lock? Starting with the clutch pulled? These are issues for him? I tend to bond with my machines and like them more over time as they serve me without complaint. He seems to find tiny flaws and hop from one to the next every few months.

Yeah the warming up issue sounded a bit lame.....the cables being too short would annoy me as Im a tall rider. He sounds a little precious but hey if thats who he is thats who he is.

7:09 Clutch switch is a super simple fix, disconect the switch, cut the wires and join them together. Same with the side stand switch.

I always fire my bike up and let it warm up as I put my gear on, by the time I have everything on, it's warmed up. Once you get into this habit, it solves the annoyance you describe.

If you need more content, make some segments on removing both the side stand and clutch lever engine cutout. Simple and one off jobs. Install a Trailtech fan, one off job. Find a peg lowering kit. I don’t quite understand how locking/unlocking the steering lock is a serious issue. The DRZ is a great little bike, wonderful power spread for a 400, excellent conventional 48 mm forks (better than spindly non adjustable 43 mm forks in the new Honda’s/T7 etc), super reliable. Yes, the noise is objectionable and the gearing is a pain but it is a 20 year old design. You will never see a newly designed Dakar type 450 from Japan for a multitude of reasons so it’s either back to the new soft core 300’s or modify the 500EXCF. 5 minute oil change whingers, please get educated.

Number of those irks you highlight are easily sorted on the DRZ. For example 1. Exhaust - Yoshimura RS3 eliminated the ear pounding bop bop with a harmonic ear pleasing sound. Also tooth change not needed as DRZ can get upto 145kph. 2. Suspension - RaceTech insert and rear spring makes the bike in my opinion like driving a Ford Fairlane and the vibration greatly reduced in the handlebars. These two changes alone makes it a very different bike better than the Honda.

I love mine!!...been riding street bikes for 10 years, my FIRST dirt bike ever!.......it's plenty fast to blow away Cars and Traffic, etc.....I'm usually slamming on my brakes because people Won't get out of my way! But the key is to know WHY you're buying it....and what you're riding History is, and what you Expect. If you want to commute on the highway get a real street bike.....if you want to slam back roads and Local highways, and rip off-road, Drz is fine.

My DRZ also had the muffler spark arrestor end cap modified by the dealer from new. I'm in NZ and yes, the exhaust was hideously loud! I bought a FMF Q4 muffler for it and that helped reduce the noise a lot. Also looks great too! I've adventurised my DRZ and just love it, but it is soft in the rear spring, needs upgrade on the spring, and it's just a little too tall for me at 5'10". I had my stock seat altered and made to the same dimensions as a Seat Concepts seat and oh what a difference! I can now ride for at least an hour without squirming. I fitted 15/43 gearing and it's perfect for the road, 140kmh top speed, cruising at 100kmh is just right in the sweet spot of the rev range. Great bike, she's a keeper for sure!

I'm happy with mine, if the road journey to the dirt is too far I just throw it in a trailer behind my car. The DRZ is durable, capable and fun, and it doesn't whinge!

Not sure if anyone else has posted the clutch fix, but it's really simple, just pull the cowl off and blind the clutch sensor wires (green and yellow), they feed to pins so just separate at the connectors and short them back to each other. Problem gone! :) Cheers Jim

I bought my DRZ400S last year and couldn’t be happier. I looked at some 250s but they were just too underpowered for me. I really like the power and torque of the 400.

Cape York edition end cap for the exhaust from Suzuki quietens it down for $60. 15/44 gearing really reduces the 6th gear search and makes it fine to ride at 80-110 kph and a no brainer $100 spend. Bike warm up is only a couple of mins...if you're that busy you don't have a couple of mins available to warm up your bike I hope you have an understanding wife because they don't have efi and need a warm up too before a ride to the shops.

I was going to buy a 300L but due to the wait times I ended up getting a used DRZ three months ago for less than a third of what I could buy a 300l and absolutely love it. Super easy to ride but has plenty of grunt when needed. Even today, Can't go wrong with a DRZ

just flip the throttle tube around so it"s on the bottom this will give you extra movement in the cables so you can put your risers back on, I have 50mm risers on mine, you can disconnect the clutch switch in about 5 mins , just remove headlight cowl , pull the plug from the switch apart and rejoin the two wires from bike side together it has a male and female ends that go together, done. you should have got another quieter exhaust end cape with the cape york kit which is quieter, if they did"nt give it to you go back and see them. I have 15/44 sprockets great combo, easily cruise on 100 and still low enough for the bush. I have also ridden single trail in 33 plus temps and never over heated.

I haven’t had one for nearly 20 years and find a CRF450X a good alternative for my setup. The DRZ is such a surprisingly good bike and greater than the sum of its parts. I would own another in a heartbeat!

Very reasonable assessment. I ride a klx250s and my brother rides a drz400s. I like the klx better in all ways except above 60 mph on tarmac where the klx starts to lack power. A klx with a 330 or 351 big bore might be the perfect bike for me.

Have owned 2 drz400s great bikes but I wanted a 6th gear and a fuel gauge and gear selector, I ride around 1.5 hours to get to the bush, and that's why I have just ordered a Honda crf300l which I think would be great for my kind of riding now.

Great bikes, plenty of knowledge & aftermaket support. I prepped one in 2010 for my ex, shipped it Buenos Aires, she took it through Uruguay, southern Brazil, Paraguay, Bolivia, Peru, Chile, down to Tierra Del Fuego & back to BA, 14,600 miles solo in 4 months. All done on the same chain & sprockets. Only failure was the speedo drive. Once back in the UK, valve clearances were still in spec.

It appears two of the reasons the Australian DRZ is lighter than the US one is the fan, and baffle. What are the measurements for the handlebars from side to side? Have an outdoor area with a standard door frame. Wanting to bring the bike inside as I have no garage. Purchasing a new drz in the coming weeks? Great video

Spot on Solid! I loved my DRZ in the bush but they are a pig on road. I machined up an aluminium bung for the muffler with a smaller hole and it was much quieter without losing power. Gearing is a big compromise, hard to get it right for all round use. Suspension is pretty good. I've now got a DR650 and love it! Doesn't feel a lot heavier and is easy to handle, cruises easily and very relaxed on 100-110km/h all day and will tractor up any hill. Suspension needs work but if you don't try to ride it like an enduro bike it's not a problem. Bulletproof bike which I plan on owning and riding for a long time to come...

My rmx450z had the clutch switch also, so I modded it easily. I pulled the switch from the perch and then unplugged it from the main wiring harness. To get it to start you need to bridge this harness plug so you just add a piece of 18g solid wire and connect the two wires of the plug. I then covered that up with shrink wrap and tucked it all behind the headlight.

Good video. Fair call, I had a dr650 and I just couldn’t jive with the idea of slabbing for hundreds of km at the time so I wanted a ‘dirt bike’ (verses dual sport) which this ticks the boxes. Apart from the weight of course. here’s to the new Honda 300 bringing some modern bike to us.

I've got the S model, it was available in Australia for a while, this is going back to 05 though. The extra weight isn't really that noticeable, I changed the exhaust and gearing, the radiator fan does come in handy. 16 years later I've still got it and its still going strong, love the drz.

I took a brand new stock Suzuki DRZ 400 To the little Roady national EnDuro back in 2001 in Rhode Island it was The maiden voyage of the bike And came in 3rd fourth stroke in the C class out of around 25 riders. The bike looked like it had been through the ringer and 2 years older after 60 miles of tough trails.

Nice review. The clutch lever has a switch to start, just link between the terminals, same with sidestand switch, to bypass, (always on) I always start my bike, then put my jacket, helmet, gloves on, then your almost there with warm up. The pro to this is that the oil gets a chance to circulate before taking off. In comparison my efi bike idles high on start up, drives me crazy, and not as smooth as carb through slow traffic.

I really enjoy my second-hand DZ-Z400S. The previous owner really took care of it and dressed it up. Compared to a 200cc dual sport, its a lot of fun. It gets me where I want to go, even on the Interstate, but its not enjoyable due to all the wind. I haven't counted teeth so I don't know what I'm geared at, but it can maintain 80 without a problem. It takes a little clutch, which is way better than my other dual sport, to get going most of the time. I wish it had a wider ratio transmission. I don't need or want 6th, I want L-N-1-2-3-4. The high clearance really helps out on some rutted out singletrack nearby, but the rest of my riding could be easily done with a slightly lower and more road friendly bike. I couldn't take an "ADV" bike everywhere I like to ride, but I think I could enjoy a CRF300L and maybe even make a DR650 work. I dream of a removable "rally" style fairing, for riding to the place, and then dropping at the camp site for exploring with less weight.

Yeah, it needs the ACT gear set really bad. I had a drz400se for a couple years, and swapped it for a wr250r. I was very surprised at how much better the wr250r was on the street and how much easier the slightly lighter/smaller bike was in the bush. Here in Canada i was able to run my drz400se with only one rad and it never overheated. Good luck

Great review Solid, I owned this bike too and agree with everything you’ve said. I actually ran a 15/42 sprocket combo for road use, but the off Road was a little difficult in the tight stuff, and the seat wasn’t real good for a big day either. Like you I’ve owned around 35+ bikes over my 47 years from xr 250’s to 1000cc sports bikes. I also like experiencing new machines and getting to know what they’re all about. I’ve landed on a crf250 rally for the moment with a suspension upgrade. It’s the best all rounder I’ve had so far. It lets me commute comfortably and explore on weekends. The 300 version would be my next choice I think ??

@@slakk5093 i went to a local suspension specialist, (shock treatment) they re-sprung and re-valved the front and rear. It’s a completely different bike to ride, even on the road it handles better with less fork dive under braking 👌🏻

Compared to a DR 650 from 1992, the DRZ is a formula 1 car..if a bike is fantastic, it depends what you are used to. I would also say all bikes likes aminute or two warm up to get some oil in the right places.

When I had my dr650 I bypassed the clutch switch. I am sure you can do it on the 400. I also need to do it on my current Triumph Scrambler.

Sorry solid but all the issues with the DRZ were there, you were spoilt with the WR250R (steering lock on the ign switch, EFI, rad fan, 6sp gearbox & can cruise at 100kph ) you don't want to spend money on a few small modifications but you may blow more coin selling & buying another bike.

I have a DRZ and love it. But you are spot on with some of your gripes. Too loud when starting up at 6am for a Sunday morning ride? Think the neighbors agree with you. Screaming on the highway, currently have 15 41, which makes off road a bit more challenging as you are doing 30km or riding the clutch a bit. Mostly I do sand so 30km in first not a problem

Good video, Solid! It was actually a bit educational for me as I did realize that there were so many differences between the E and the S model. That exhaust mod that Suzuki does would absolutely drive me nuts and I don't blame you at all. One thing that really surprised me is the lack of radiator fan(s). It doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me, especially for the Australian market, and the fact that they have one on the S and SM.

It's a completely different radiator system, not just a lack of fans. It's a free flowing radiator, so it cools much more effectively, but the down side is it heats up faster when air is not passing over it. Probably weight saving and a lack of room is why there's no fans on it.

@@SigmaSheepdog buy the thing is that any moving air over the free flow radiator cools the drze very quickly. It just doesn't like sitting still. As long as it's moving it's cooling more effectively than the S/SM radiator

I’m a new subscriber. What other motorcycles have you had in the same category as the DRZ? I have a T7 which I love, but on the lookout for a smaller dual sport for off road training. Test rode a KLX250S yesterday. Wow what a difference in weight and flickability to my T7 (obviously). Didn’t buy it, it was too small and weak engine and suspension for my 6’4 frame.

Might take this one up on the Q&A. KTM 690 Enduro if you can afford it $$ 300L if you throw out the suspension for better option. Big bore the KLX250S, Kawasaki sell a 300cc kit from the dealership here in OZ since its release.

I have bar risers and tall bars on my bike and the cabels reach fine ?? Also pulling the clutch in to start is very nit picky and i have a big gun exhaust my bike is loud but i wouldnt say its embarrising ? Its sounds nice i dont even wrar ear plugs and ride for hours without "headaches" the only thing i agree with you is the 5 speed but i can live with that because the bike is so reliable and capable maybe a really good rider or a pro can oush it past its limits but probably 75% of riders cant ride like that probably less

Mate I had my DRZ 400 for 8 years and yes was a fantastic ( overall) but lacked in a few areas 1. Weight 2. No 6 speed 3. Outdated design and no fuel injection 4. Suspesion need modification So that’s why I went with the SWM 650 , but will get the RS 500 as well as it’s better in a areas noted above. And by law any bike shop can service a bike and parts are just as easy or hard ( at present) with virus 🦠 thing .

Recent subscriber and recent DRZ-E purchaser here in NZ and have to agree with your assessment. I had a 2009 KLX250S and the DRZ feels like a step backwards in some ways; no 6th gear, radiator fan and tacho that the 250 had and is definitely not as daily friendly as the 250 was. But no other current bike options in that 300-500cc bracket! My biggest initial dislike with the DRZ was the standing riding position, I am only 5 foot 11 and found it very fatiguing and uncomfortable to ride; it actually made me hate the bike. Changing the bars to Pro Taper Windham bend with 1" risers and it solved that problem completely. Didn't have to change any cables but I had to turn the throttle housing around to the bottom.

10:29 whilst the gear ratios on the drz arnt the best, 6th gear isnt everything. my mates crf300l rally's 6th gear is virtually useless. yeah it drops the rpm when cruising, but twist the throttle to overtake, and nothing happens. u have to drop a gear or two to overtake at 100km/hr.

Last weekend I helped a buddy pick up a KLX250SM (motard). Got to take it for a very short ride in the parking lot - stalled it straight away. Not much torque. FMF pipe and it's too loud; no option for a baffle. Now; the way you worded your explanation on your pipe the shop HAD the baffle and either chucked it or never installed it. Perhaps they still have it and can supply it. I was keen on the CRF300L Rally, but bikes are going for premium prices because demand is well over supply. Being too cheap to pay premium prices the Rally is off the table this year. But dang, the Africa Twin is looking mighty good (finding the CB does not have the leg and arm room for longer hauls).....

Dealer disposed of me baffle and is stalling on finding a new one. It is hard to go past the AT once you hit the ignition and listen to that engine note 🤤

An interesting review of the whole bike as a package for you. Of course many owners are more than happy that the DRZ suits them or can be modified to suit them. For the sake of playing devil’s advocate, for someone who does change bikes often and puts thought into the next one I’m surprised you bought it in the first place, many of the negatives you’ve raised would have come to light from researching the model. The steering lock, gear ratios, the fact it has 5 gears, that it doesn’t have a fan, the starting process (and I always start my bikes with the clutch in to put less stress on the starter motor), all of this info could be researched beforehand. If there’s a lesson here it is Do The Research and really think what that means in a real world application

Solid I agree with you on the looks, It's pure Suzuki style. Some time when you get a bug in your butt do a video on the differences between the US and Aussie versions. I didn't realize the subframe and carbs were different. I automatically would put a pumper on the bike but do not know how the subframes compare. I am still looking at the S as a dual sport as a option to go with my AT. Still enjoy all you stuff, thanks.

I agree with you, I have a DRZ that I hardly ride as I don't like it. I hate the noise, even with a new end cap it sounds obscenely loud. I installed the ACT gears, they are not perfect. 1-3 are ok, but there is a big jump to 4th and a massive leap to 5th. 14/49 gearing helps.

How much more different is the DRZ400SM : i was told it has a different carb and gearing. So I don’t do off-road anymore prob should mention that. Been minding a friend Drz400sm while he is away OS. It been prob the best am touring bike I been On. Safari tank would be a good update

The clutch switch can be easily bypassed. Take off the headlight cowl and plug the wire back in to itself. 😊

If you got a CRF300L (I managed to get one) you still would have to invest some money to get it ready to go. A bash plate, a fat bar and a suspension upgrade are mandatory. In Europe it sets you back at least 1.000 €, I don’t know what it is in Australian Dollars.

But straight out the box it’s quieter, doesn’t need as much warm up , steering locks from key , better road gearing and cooling fan so that alone fixes just about all the the things he would of like to upgrade! I hope he’s going for the blue or green to be different, but the Red seems to be the right fit for his situation

I had a DRZ400 back than (I think I bought it in 2005, and they didn’t change significantly since that time) so I know exactly what you’re talking about. I just wanted to mention, that it still needs some investments to be ready for the tails (at least, if one is a fat ass like me - 6,1”, 90kg 😚, what means around 100kg with gear).

@@bartoszpajak2285 totally agree but I think he knows every bike is going to need a few upgrades, skid plate , bark busters, stronger bars is probably all he needs for starters with the Honda. Suspension more so if it’s a L and not the rally. We agree! But like he said the DRZ was going to still cost more and not quiet get to where he wanted it to be! A Honda will start of closer to where he wants his ride to be and more likely exceed with upgrades in time

@@kennyknackers6084 the only real drawback is, that the CRF is still slightly underpowered, what gets obvious on hill climbs and in deep sand very quickly. And that’s where the DRZ definitely has the edge.

@@bartoszpajak2285 yes drz is more trail than a true road trail! ITCHY BOOTS just rode a crf250 2020 model north to south across South Africa, so reliable! But I agree they lac in hill and soft sand compared to a more trail bike ! But for us older frail people do we really want to be push it that hard ! I’m not fit enough for Dakar rally anymore!

Sorry Solid, I totally disagree with your complaints, each one can be remedied for minimal expense, the DRZ is a very simple bike to work on. I always warm up my bikes before I ride them, it's good for the motor. Re-gearing is inexpensive and easy, changes the bike on the hwy. I am 6'6" and have two inch Rox risers on my bike which makes standing quite comfortable and the cables work just fine. A lack of a fan is not a problem, I typically ride in 100 degree heat at slow speeds and it's no problem, but if you really feel the need , buy a fan. The clutch switch is easily defeated, you tube it! I don't know of any bike that comes straight out of the box that does not need a few adjustments to make it just right for you. The DRZ is a rock solid dependable bike with great power! That 300 Honda or Kawasaki you're looking at is underpowered , you would be highly disappointed!

Appreciate the feedback RJ and all fair points. Most of my issues are easy and basic fixes. What I was trying to get across was that I am not gelling with the bike enough to want to go through the journey of addressing them 👍 As good and capable as it is, its not for me 🙂

Hay Solid this mite be the first time I sort of disagree . I think whatever bike you get you will have small things you will have to address . You've sorted the breather hose ✔. The clutch switch and the side stand switch are a easy fix . Getting the cables sorted for the bar rises is a bit of a pain but it can be done with out new cables . I have 30mm rises and my mate runs 50mm no problem but you do have to reroute the cables like i said and it is a pain in the ass . The baffle is a easy fix too just ask the dealer to keep the next one they take out ✔. Don't worry about a after market exhaust you really don't need it unless your racing. The warming up is easy one to just start it before you put your helmet and gloves on and you should be right ✔. Yep 6th gear would be good but you do get used to it. The fan thing you can get away with a computer fan and a switch or buy one of a S or SM model I have only boiled mine once in 30.000ks plenty of single tracks . I don't think there's a bike out there that you don't need to do something to make it fit you . There is a reason the DRZ is so popular you just have to make it yours with what suits you. You really don't need to spend a lot of money . I got a set of motard rims I can throw on in half a hour and head out and mix it up with the boy racers. Also how many Kms have you got up on it now ??? . The DRZ is not my only bike but I love it it's like a swiss amy knife it did take a bit time to gel with it . Maybe you need a bit more time with it but if you don't like it you don't like it . Anyway some food for thought . Thanks mate ✌

A few months after getting ur ???cough...300L you're going to be trawling aftermarket sites, spending $$ and posting new suspension, accessory etc. upgrades or fixit videos 4sure Solid - its the nature of the beast haha🤣 but all good fun matey. I think you guys both got the wrong end of the stick. I am under no illusion that whatever bike comes next will need heavy modification, its the nature of our game 😬 That is not my real gripe with the DRZ, it's that I do not like it enough to justify going down that road. This was a stop gap bike that I gave the chance to become my primary but I we have not gelled. It's all part of the journey 👍

Sometimes people are hunting for a unicorn. A unicorn is a unicorn because it doesn’t exist. Otherwise you’d look out at the high country and loads of horses would have horns sticking out of their heads😝 So. You put up with compromises. Or a get a bike and customise it to suit. I’ve never had a bike which I haven’t modded in some way. And that’s a fact of adv riding I’m afraid! So you have a few. You grab one of these, and add a wide ratio gearbox, big tank and a fuel injection kit.(optional, but nice to have) KTM 690 bikes and its cousins. Big tank, and iron out any bugs. CRF300 Rally - Suspension mods and a few tweaks. So why are people still crapping on about bloody unicorns? Just build one.
