I finally got my hands on a dual sport. I was lucky enough to get a brand new Suzuki DRZ400E with the Cape York pack. So far it has been a great adventure motorcycle. In this video I brake down the reasons I chose the DRZ over the competition like the CRF300L, WR250R, and KLX.

@@chroniclesofsolid - So Honda with their new 300 is moving the the right direction however, despite the few sales numbers, how much of an investment would it be for Suzuki to maintain their existing platform on the DRZ, install a wide ration gearbox (having owned one, sprocket changes don't do the trick because then you compromise on the 1st gear crawl), upgrade the dash and add fuel injection + smog stuff to get emissions in line with other regions, thus expanding their market base. What am I missing? Too expensive to manufacture? Barry from South Africa. BTW, I enjoy your pragmatic reviews.

Yep it is truly amazing how the drz 400 and the good Dr. 650 have essentially remained unchanged for decades and they sell out every year and still have a cult following. Suzuki has in it's past had engineers and marketing chiefs that truly understood the market that is dual sports. I love my Dr 650. I mean she's chubby and old but my God with just a little love she is a rock solid blast of go anywhere do anything you ask and will still be around while thousands of ktms are buried in the rocky graveyards of catastrophic failure decades before the masterful Suzukis

I'm 46 years old and have been riding motorcycles since I was a little kid. I've owned lots of different machines and I currently have a 2015 DRZ 400 and absolutely love it. It doesn't matter how old it is, if it's a quality machine that works, it is what it is. New doesn't always mean better.

Going by your user name I have to tell you this story. Mates of mine from another band that I hang with back in the late 80's toured some lower states of the US. They played with Pantera at a few gigs. When they got back to Australia, they brought back the demo of CFH. I was one of the 1st 10 people to hear that album in Australia. That's my claim to fame LOL ! Also, l plan on getting a DRZ shortly as I'm nearly 50 and I raced though my teens on 2strokes but l don't what one of these newer short stroke 4 strokes that appear to blow up more than the mx bikes that I raced on.. Hope your having a great day mate !

Agree with that..out of the many bikes ive had, my 01 & 04 drz s models i enjoyed the most in every way. I would prefer any year drz s model than that new crfl ..slipper clutches and abs aint where its at, mapping sounds poor aswel, not to mention the rear shock. As previously said new aint always better, frequently its worse as in this case. Gimme a drz s model any day of the week. Crfl is just too poxy,

The longer that you own it, the more you will appreciate just what a great little lightweight versatile bike it is. I have the Aussie 2017 DRZ400E. 3 plus years, 14,000km and it just feels like it's run in. Never let me down. Set up your suspension. If you are under 80kg, it may be valved OK for you. Turn in the compression to around 6 clicks from all the way in on both the forks and shock. Keep the bike as light weight as possible removing as much unwanted parts as possible and not adding to many farkles. I had the same problem with the loud exhaust and managed to reduce the noise to 72DB by playing with the baffle. A steering stabiliser work well above 100km on the freeway. D606 on the rear and MT21 on the front is the best compromise for road / off road. 15/44 gearing is also the best compromise for road / off road. A 17 litre Safari tank for when you go camping or multiday trips. Remove the swing arm bolt, linkages and steering bearings as Suzuki don't put in enough grease.

@@chroniclesofsolid and Moto Suzuki All good advice My 2007 E model bought new all the ADV upgrades 30,000ks it has never missed a beat . the first couple of years was hard enduro then started doing the ADV thing but still wanted it set up so if i wanted to do the smashing hills thing i could. So go for soft luggage and you dont need that expensive shit just go for some saddle bag style $100 to $150 just did a quick search there some for $50 another thing think about a soft fuel cell cheaper and for the amount of times you need that extra fuel . just have to plan your trips around petrol stations better . Solid welcome to the club go the mighty DRZ400E I think you've made a good decision and those black rims look great with the black tank . I've got a set of after market black plastics and a friend made me a black vinyl tank cover . ✌

@@DanBlake3rd yep easily can shave at least 5lbs off just by going to an aftermarket exhaust. removing or replacing the street legal gear (chain guards, fender extension, indicators, mirrors etc) with lighter stuff you can remove another 10lb or more. but you invariably add it back with a larger fuel tank and luggage racks. but it's possible to have a bike kitted out for long range adventure riding that doesn't weigh any more than stock when you take the camping gear off and go trail riding. another good thing about the long range safari tanks you can have a 28l tank and when it has 15l or less it carries the weight lower than the stock tank improving the bike feel. so there's really no disadvantage.

Who would have thought it, the DRZ400 has out lived its competition! Before I owned one I rode a WRF280 and the DRZ felt like a truck. Once I got used to it and added the ADV stuff& like firmer suspension and a wide ration gear set, it proved to be easier to ride long distances and truck like handling , well I got used to it. Then I bought a Tiger 800XCx and yes it felt like a B double at first, but what a way to eat up the miles of dirt roads! Now I am excited to be back using my DRZ again. It feels like a mini bike now.

Rode my brothers 94 for years and you just could not kill it, so reliable and simple to work on. Really happy for ya solid! Smart decision. If the DRZ wasn't so tall I would have purchased one. I'm a short arse so I had to opt for the DR650 instead. Took it to a suspension specialist and had the rear shock revalved with a stiffer spring to compensate for extra baggage and the front forks got stiffer springs with slightly heavier fork oil. The DR factory was just too soft. I also purchased an after market lower seat for my short arse lol. It became a bit of a project to have it all set up to suit me and couldn't be any happier. All set up for long adventures. Good luck with the DRZ and look forward to your adventures. Cheers!

I've been riding since 1979 when I bought a 1972 Suzuki TS90 with not paper route money. I now own a plated 2004 DRZ400E and a 2008 Suzuki Bandit 1250S. If the 11 yr old me could've seen the 52 year old me riding my DRZ I would've thought "I'm gonna be successful!!" The drz absolutely needs the FCR carburetor, without a doubt. I did own a 2007 DRZ400SM and did all the upgrades except the carb. It was never even remotely close to the bike I own now. The throttle response on my DRZ is ridiculous, it feels like a fuel injected bike. It did take me about a whole summer and removing replacing the carb and re jetting about 100 times. But it's worth it!

Well on you mate. That goes to show that we often look at spec sheets and complain because this is 5kg heavier or only 12.54% more torque or I would like1.545 litres more in the tank or 7 gears with CVT. However, decisions are often just made because you know and are comfortable with a particular dealer, or your mechanic tells you something, or your friend has the same model or you don't like the looks of the bike or any other non-performance related factor which end up having a very important weight in the decision making. Looking forward to see your review on this bike. Ride safe

If only suzuki would update the drzs with 6 speed and FI and better everything like honda kinda did for for crf250L with crf300L.....and ESPECIALLY if Suzuki did a Rally edition too! I would SO buy it!

When the NFS closed all the fire trails in my area after a fire and has made it clear that they are never going to reopen them, I sold my DRZ400. Broke my heart because even after 15 years of regular use it was running great, but the alternative was having to cart the bike a hundred miles to ride it which negates the point of a dual sport.

Have a 2018 drz i bought new. It's terrible on tight single track cause it's so top heavy. Rode a wrr and fell in love. Have a 2020 coming this month. I'll sacrifice power for handling anyday.

Glad you got a bike again. Love Suzuki( have had 3 back in the 80’s early 90’s.) all road but absolutely bulletproof. Think this bike will suit you. Had the Honda crf 250l rally after not riding for 20+ years and it too was bulletproof but... 😕 meh. Presently riding the “Triceratops “ prototype ( KTM 790 Adventure yes, I remember your remark) and am enjoying its personality and performance. No mechanical issues. Bit upset that it is obsolete because of the 890 but c’est la vie. It is now a retro. Awaiting the thaw of winter here in Canada then back to the riding. But am enjoying following your adventure. Cheers.

Because DRZ is sweetspot in midsize bikes Think TT 350 or XR 400 The CRF 300 is underpowered IMHO.. you need a little more grunt at low-end and raging engine higher up.. Not a hill climbing machine for sure. Miss so much my TT 350.

I just recently picked up a second hand 2012 Australian E model with all the mods and aftermarket bits you need to take on the the outback for AU$5,000 with only 6000km on it they came out from factory on the aus market with the 3x3 mod already done and super loud unrestricted exhaust along with the Kheine FCR 39mm flat slide carburettor with bigger jetting the Australian army used them that's just telling you how good they really are

Good video on the Drz I was a bit disappointed when you named the smaller dealership as dinky and not likely to be around for long. It would of being good enough to say that your not comfortable with smaller dealerships and leave it at that. It's hard enough trying to get ahead without negative pessimistic reviews .

Thank you for your review and your comments are on point. I got a new DRZ in December 2020 and love it but just as you mention, I do find the noise too loud and very annoying when riding in the bush. After I installed the Cap York kit it went a couple a decibel quieter but still obnoxious. I am looking for some way to make it quieter. Please let me know if you found a way to do so.

Well done and congrats! Haven’t been on one myself but after watching MADTV’s Cape York insane adventure with these, I’m a believer! In some of my research it seems that these come poorly greased from the factory. Just a thought if you haven’t looked into it yet.

Congrats on the new bike. Funny thing is I did the same. Was looking for a wr250r but couldn't get one for trying. Ended up getting a 2019 with the Cape York pack, and a heap of other extras as well. Have added a new shifter, stegs pegs, pivot pegs and rox risers. Now I just need a comfy seat and was thinking about the safari 17l tank. You should still have the standard exhaust tip for the factory unit, I still do as the Cape York pack was just extras. If not I would talk to your dealer and see what they can do for you. Anyway enjoy your ride, I am loving mine so far.

I think this is a great choice. Compared to my 2009 klx250s, my brother's drz400s is a little rough and rowdy. I may get a drz400s this year. It just is a better dual sport. From 0 to 70 mph I have no problem with the transmission with 14/44 or 15/44 gearing. I haven't tried 14/47. Enjoy.
