Just for clarity, it defaults to EV mode when you have a charged battery, because otherwise what is the point to having the battery charged. If the battery is drained, then it defaults to HV mode. Either way, the Electric motor is 179 HP, so in order to max out you need the engine's 176 HP. The 302 HP is because the engine's high output is not where the electric motor max output is.

Yah he apparently is not aware that the Prime defaults to EV mode when the battery has some charge, unless you change the setting to HV mode. When the battery is drained than the Prime defaults to HV mode, unless you put it into EV mode, where it can operate for a minimum time, kind of like the RAV4 Hybrid's EV mode. That is the other thing, the HV mode is needed for max power because the EM has 179 HP, the ICE has 176 HP, and I get the feeling that the battery does not give full output for the EM, because this is plug in hybrid and not EREV.

Look boys, I get we are all about electrification but I have to say that this was one of your worst reviews. 1) the 302 horsepower is only available when in HV mode or auto. The electric motors assist the ICE engine to provide initial torque and smooth out power delivery. EV mode was never meant to be a launch mode. Just enough zip for in town traffic where the electric motors are most efficient. 2) I don't really feel it's fair to be comparing this vehicle to a BEV as it serves a different purpose. This is meant to cover the buyer that wants the freedom of range that an ICE can deliver while reducing the fuel consumption and cost for in town. I have the SE version of this vehicle as a family intowner and a road tripper, and for that purpose it is brilliant. 3) I agree that the buttons to the left of the steering column are impossible to see and that the infotainment system is dated (that rear camera is functional but terrible resolution with huge fish eye effect). Look, I love this channel and am a huge EV enthusiast but I can't afford a full EV yet and think that hybrids have a place in the transition. This one has the longest hybrid range in the segment and covers 90% of my daily driving in a month. I easily get 2000Km between fuel ups. Plus, I feel this was 10x as harsh as the Jeep PHEV that gets half the range...not super fair imo.

When you start the RAV4 Prime, it defaults to EV only mode (0-60 in about 9 sec). If you switch to Auto EV/HV mode by pushing the button, OR change to HV only mode by pushing a different button, you get the full 302 HP that will throw you back in you seat from a dead stop (0-60 in 5.7 sec) OR even when passing on the highway. Please don't bash the accelleration in this car when you don't know how to set it up to use the full accelleration potential it's designed for and you are driving in the default EV only mode on a highway.

I traded my Model S P100D for a RAV4 Prime. Got tired of the front end rattle over bumps that they refused to fix, the CV joint rattle on acceleration, charge port door problem, dead keyfob, steering wheel button broke in, wiper nozzles gone crazy, etc. Too many quality issues had me jump from the S to the R4P. I miss some Tesla features but not the lack of quality.

You can take this on a long trip with zero range anxiety and never worry about driving around and finding out of commission charging stations. I love EVs, but the infrastructure requires a lot of patience and planning, and for most people, they're not there yet. I could have a full EV and a PHEV for a second car, easily. The one HUGE advantage the Toyota has over the Tesla is the fact that you own the Toyota and they use a conventional parts supply and repair system. I can take my Toyota to any mechanic and Toyota will sell me parts to fix it myself if I want. Also, Toyota doesn't delete features when you resell your car. Toyota is also a better employer than Tesla and Elon Musk, the 21st century's biggest liar isn't associated with Toyota.

@jrus6903 жыл бұрын
It was not in ECO, it was in EV mode, which it defaults to when the battery has any amount of charge in it. I guess this is confusing for some people, as this is a plug in hybrid, not a EREV. Simple way to put it is that, the EM has 179 HP, the ICE has 176, and when combined they get you 302, but that requires the battery. He was not playing with the car enough, just switch the mode.

Other than my desire to wait for a Model Y; if they put a good screen on this I would consider it from my Prius. In my 2010 and 2014 Prius I have to turn the display off due a eye stigmatism. On good HD type displays I have no issues but on the low resolution screens they give me a headache very quick. Edit. Failed moose test. No thanks.

If Sandy complained about buttons on the left side of the steering wheel, that means it's a good idea. He would probably bury the buttons in 5 layers of touchscreen interactions keeping with the classical design philosophy of form of function.

These PHEV make perfect sense as a transition to BEV. But first the Power Grid needs to be upgraded, preferable with Nuclear Reactors, and battery technology evolves to produce less toxic batteries, not requiring so much rare metals.
@markplott48203 жыл бұрын
Ummm, we already had 20+ years to transition to BEV, now the HYBRID is irrelevant, just like GAS cars, no one wants them anymore, people are realizing BEV is a SUPERIOR machine, and they are Buying NEW BEV or they are buying USED BEV. GAS & Hybrids are DEAD on arrival.
@RogerM883 жыл бұрын
@@markplott4820 what has an EV superior now to a standard Hybrid? To become useless or obsolete in less than a decade, due to the battery? Maybe Solid State Batteries of Sodium-ion Batteries replace fully the ICE market, but not Li-on. Also, having cheaper ways to produce Hydrogen, could lead to the ban of BEVs due to production costs, and the toxicity of an degraded battery. The kWh isn't getting cheap too. You still need ICE engines to power farming and heavy machinery to mine those rare metals.
@michaelholliday1003 жыл бұрын
@@RogerM88 With a Hybrid with have the complexity of the ICE Engine and you have your BEV System. One of the VERY large benefits of BEV is simplicity and extremely low maintenance. PHEV requires oil changes, Coolant changes, and others.

@@michaelholliday100 but probably last twice as much. We still don't have enough data to say BEVs are more reliable than current ICE cars. In theory they should be, but the issue it's still their current battery technology.

Hybrids require the SAME maintenance as any GAS car. TESLA can go 300,000 miles without any maintenance, only consumables. Tesla are CHEAPER to operate than a CAMRY , and payback is only 1 - 2 years

Whatever the driver said about a $50k car at 8:21 was unintelligible even at normal speed. What I like about it is that when you turn the wheel too far, it doesn't disable the cruise and everything. You just go back to the lane and it resumes without any fuss. In some ways it is superior to Tesla but don't tell the fanboys that.

@@InternetDude It does a fair job keeping in the middle of the lane, even on some curves. I can't wait until the rails down the middle approach gets replaced by something more like how experienced drivers take curves, starting on the outside to flatten the curve as much as possible, picking a line, planning the apex, braking (not necessarily executed in that order,)...I'm sure it will be a while longer.
