The FK8 is like a good vintage wine, it has gotten better and "more recognition" with age. At first many were too focused on the polarizing aesthetics of the Type R, but then it began to slowly capture the hearts and minds of many. This FK8 is reminiscent of the game changing impact the NA1 NSX had (to only a degree of course, as the original NSX was groundbreaking in so many ways). It's been 5 years since the FK8 came into the market and it has not been dethroned yet as the best overall hot hatch.

You could argue a good case for the Hyundai. But only on a preference/budget basis. I think the Hyundai is pretty underrated because of the badge. Similar to how you see so few Type R FK8's on the road. It's a shame, but at the same time it's evidence that people don't have taste in good driving. It should come at least with the "option" of a 6-speed manual. For the Type R there there is no option. When I saw VW were releasing the Clubsport fairly soon after the MK8’s launch I had a feeling that they had rushed it just to get some bigger numbers on the top trumps card and it turns out that they have. I lived with a 3 door Edition 40 manual for a week or so and it was fabulous, it felt like VW had spent some proper time on it as you explained on your review of it all them years ago at Evo. The MK8 doesn’t look like it has that same ethos at all, the slightest of chassis changes, a remap and a fancy sticker, a bit of a wasted opportunity. Yet again though Dan a mega video 👍🏼

The new Clubsport would kill the Edition 40. It may have lost to the Civic on subjective items but short of the Clubsport S the bigger picture is that this is the best driving Golf so far (I have driven both and I've got a CS Ed40 on the drive as I type).

It’s such a shame the Honda is a bit marmite with its looks! The reviews on this car have been amazing, a true drivers car. As for the VW clubsport, I’m inclined to agree that it does look like VW rushed this model. It might be the most capable GTI to date if you exclude the Clubsport S but that doesn’t make it the best Golf GTI. The anniversary editions just felt a little bit more special and the Edition 40 was the best and closest to the Clubsport S in my opinion. Ps you can have a lot of fun in the Mk5 GTI for a fraction of the money.

@@volkswizard I think that’s a given considering it’s got more power and a dsg box but outright pace isn’t the be all and end all. The edition 40’s manual was a lovely gearbox and considering this car is still based on the the 7.5 I can’t see that the suspension changes to this one would leave much on the table on a twisty road if the two were to meet. The edition 40 would still appeal more special to most, 3 doors, manual box, alcantara wheel 👌🏼 it felt special and it looked it and I don’t think this one does.

Waiting on the new i30N. Had a FK2 and it was ridiculously fast. An N sounds more usable more of the time on paper, but an R Sportline in gray feels toned down enough to be doable.

I enjoyed your review. Thanks! No manual, way more expensive, not as nice to drive (so you say), seats not as good, numb steering, but with all the faults, I would take the Golf Club Sport over the Type R every time. I just can't get past that hideous look of the type R. Too bad they don't offer it in a proper hatchback like to old Civic VTEC hatchback. That I would take. I know it's personal taste, but I am a grownup and driving what looks like a child's cartoon drawing is not for me.

I don't twist that the type R the best one here is. But sportcontact 6's with 245 wide tires for the type R and bridgestone potenza S001's for the Clubsport with 235 are not competition of each other. Put a set Michelin Cup 2 or at least 4S on the Clubsport wheels, and you get a whole different story (for sure with the same size of tires). I love the type R, realy in the sportline trim. But give me a kings red metallic Clubsport. Best looking hot hatch for sure.

Both cars are great in their own ways. Although you are correct in a straight line the Type R will lose. Put them both on a track for hot laps and sadly the Golf R will get smoked. Both great cars but are great in their ways. For context I own a mk7.5 Golf R and love it but respect is due where respect is due and the Type R although hideous is a great car!

When it comes to a hot golf they are all a bit boring so you might as well get the normal GTI and if you getting the normal GTI you would be far better off saving your money and getting the Skoda Octavia VRS. There is only one reason to buy the VW and that is badge snobby.
@TheLordCrash3 жыл бұрын
The Clubsport costs less than 5k more than the normal GTI and you get a much better performance, steering and sound. If you are interested in a hot hatch Golf you should always go for the Clubsport and not the normal GTI. The normal GTI is usually sold to old people who don't know any better. Skoda Octavia RS is a whole different car class and offers quite less than the Clubsport in terms of performance, steering and quality and materials. People buying a Skoda Octavia RS are usually a whole different group of people that those interested in a hot hatch like the Clubsport. You buy a Skoda Octavia RS because you have to carry your family or other stuff around and because you want to combine a practical car with some good performance. That's not the case with a normal (non Variant) Gold and especially not a Clubsport or R. Just like the Civic Type R people buy these cars because they need a daily driver that is also fun. And the Clubsport really delivers on that.
@DinosaurJuiceCars3 жыл бұрын
@@TheLordCrash the clubsport is not enough fun to be anything other than a practical daily that is a bit of fun from time to time. The problem is they've ruined the ride comfort with the clubsport. Therefore you may as well buy the car built on the same platform that does a better job at being a daily driver. If you want a hot hot hatch then you have to look outside of the VW group!
@TheLordCrash3 жыл бұрын
@@DinosaurJuiceCars I don't think so. The Clubsport ist the jack of all trades of hot hatches, being both comfortable and sporty enough while offering a decent, classic exterior and a well built functional interior. It's the best hot hatch you can get right now imho if you want something for everything. If you want a sports car you should buy a sports car, you know. This is still a daily driver car that offers some fun on the road, just like you said. But you know, to each their own. There's a car out there for everyone. ;)
