This is a Motormouth couple car review of the 2022 Audi Q7 mid-size 3-row luxury SUV. What’s new for 2023? The Q7 gets more standard features including, Matrix LED headlights, high beam assist, auto dimming and power folding mirrors, interior lighting package and available remote park assist plus which automatically maneuvers the vehicle in and out of a perpendicular or parallel parking space. This feature can be performed via your phone even when you are outside of the vehicle. The Audi Q7 45 starts at $70,500 CAD/$57,500 USD which is less than the BMW X5 and Mercedes-Benz GLE plus they don’t come with a standard third row like the Audi, that’s a feature you’ll have to pay extra for. The BMW X7 and Mercedes-Benz GLS do have a standard third row, but both have a much higher starting price over $100,000 CAD/$74,000 USD. Other competitors in the premium category include the Acura MDX and the Infiniti QX60, both priced less than the Q7. There are two engine options, we are driving the Q7 55 Progressiv model with a 3L turbocharged V6 and a 48-volt mild hybrid system. It has an 8-speed automatic transmission with 335 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque. The second option is the Q7 45 with a 2L turbocharged 4-cylinder, 248 horsepower and 273 lb-ft of torque. The Q7 comes standard with 20” wheels, available 21” and 22” wheel designs. Adding the optional black optics package, we have on our test model gives the Q7 a dark edge with black window and grille surrounds, roof rails and a black rear diffuser. The interior of the Q7 is modern and spacious with room for up to 7-passengers. The Audi virtual cockpit plus features a high resolution 12.3” display screen, a 10.1” touchscreen with haptic feedback, a smaller 8.6” touchscreen to manage climate controls and it also features handwriting recognition. Other standard features include, wireless Apple Carplay and wired Android Auto, leather seating surfaces, a power driver and passenger seat with driver seat memory, heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, panoramic sunroof and a power tailgate. The Q7 45 starts at $70,500 CAD/$57,500 USD, Progressiv $75,900 CAD/$60,400 USD Premium Plus. The Q7 55 starts at $75,000 CAD/$62,500 USD Premium, Progressiv $80,700 CAD/$66,100 USD Premium Plus and Technik 87,900 CAD.

It's the sheer level of refinement that the Q7 has. The first gen was great but these take it to a whole new level. I like the subtlety of the Q7 as well. It doesn't scream "LOOK AT ME". It's the car equivalent to somebody who is quiet but confident.

The q7 is a nice car. It is a 150k car which competes with cars like the cayenne and Gls x7 etc. the mdx, xc90, jeep and some brokie infinity is not a competitor to a nice audi. Those are non luxury cars those are brokie family cars, audi are for rich ceos not family cars. Get that right.

@@sugarhog1938 that's true but each of those brands has a different mission in mind, you know what you get with Audi, and Volvo is like that one girl in school who asked you to Prom, even though the girl you wish you could take, would never look your way. but you'd feel bad if you turn down the girls offer, corny joke i know, but that's how i describe Volvo. people don't know what they have, until it's taken away. alot of people sometimes forget Volvo is a premium brand, but when you see the numbers that's how you know they are. Mercedes is the opposite of that, Mercedes represents the sophisticated girl. just a classy girl all the way around, but only certain people are lucky enough to get her. Audi is more like the girl you often settle with, there's nothing particularly exciting about her, but overtime maybe you fall in love with her personality, or maybe she's good to you, that makes her a keeper. okay what about BMW, well when it comes to them, BMW represents the popular girl, but a girl who also loves to have fun. however popular girls often come with risks, you never know what you could be getting. BMW's are known for their high maintenance costs, and some girls can be pretty high maintenance to. the Cayenne is Porsche, and their in a whole different league. so everything you know about Porsche, is going to involve speed. unfortunately that makes the Cayenne the biggest risk here.

Thank you for another great review. I took delivery in May on a Prestige Q7 and absolutely love it. It reminds me of my original 2003 Touareg updated for 2022. We drove 1600 miles from Pennsylvania to Florida and back with 2 teens and a dog. Everyone was comfortable. The cargo space isn’t as good as the Atlas I traded in, but I’m so happy I walked away from the Atlas. The air suspension is definitely worth the upgrade. My gas mileage has been great - on my highway commute with adaptive cruise control I get 30 mpg which is incredible for such a large and powerful vehicle. I’ll submit a picture of my Q7 for the next live show!

Small note/correction: For 2020, the Q7 got an all new powertrain, with a 3.0 turbocharged engine and mild hybrid system. From what I've heard, it seems to be a pretty good powertrain. The 2017-2019 have a 3.0 Supercharged engine. That's the engine that's been around for a long time, and in terms of reliability, is one of Audi's best. The pre-refresh models also seem to get slightly better fuel economy depite the newer ones mild hybrid system. Whether this is due to an increase in weight or the new engine, I don't know. Also, one of the big appeals to the Q7 vs the MDX is the optional air suspension that allows it to tow 7700lbs. This was the reason that, when replacing our 2007 Acura MDX, we went for a 2017 Q7 Technik. At 120,000km, so far no unexpected repairs. Tows our 7600lb (when loaded) camper trailer through 35-40 degree weather without overheating and a confidence that is lacked by many 1/2 ton pickup trucks (likely thanks to the air suspension keeping the vehicle perfectly level). Just expect to burn 2-3L of oil between oil changes, as this is normal for the 3.0 Supercharged engine.

Thanks for posting that correction about the engine. I have the 2019 super charged engine. I have heard the complaints from newer model owners that the MPG is worse by 2-3 mpg with the turbocharged versions.

Exactly, I was going for the Q8, but liked a lot the hefty larger presence of the Q7. I do not care for 3rd row, will never use it. But why? because.... Had a buddy who had a Corvette and asked him how does it ride at 120mph? is it stable launching it 0-60? he answered acqtually I do not know, have never done either. And I said why buy one then, and he said, because I have always liked the looks of it... I buy Saucony shoes all the time, people ask me, do I play tennis, or run marathons, neither, but why buy them then?, I just like them.

Great review. I know why you guys value the Audi brand so much. It is very refined product not flashy but more of good at everything which most people need. This is our 4th Audi product we upgraded from q5 to 2022 Q7, if you are in market for 7 passenger you will be surprised the value Q7 brings even compared to non luxury brand. Seems like 2023 brings more standard feature will be a steal if price stays same. We opted for 4 turbo. It not fast like 6 cylinder but it is adequate for large suv. We never had any issue. The interior quality is superb, over all it will not disappoint anyone. The key is to test drive it to find out, many people don’t. 3rd row seat for kids not adult.

Andrea and Zack. I'm so glad to hear you address the "comparable" question. I agree, the audi and the atlas are not comparable. That isn't to downgrade either vehicle but to me it really is like comparing cotton and polyester. Yes, shirts are made from both materials, but one just breathes better than the other.

Hi, nice job on all your reviews. I have a 2018 Q7 with the 3 liter engine. We routinely get 27 and up to 28 mpg on the highway with premium fuel. Nice quiet car. I have 80,000 miles on it. My only complaint is the price of service at the dealership and it is hard to find other mechanics who really know how to work on these. There seem to be more shops servicing BMW and Mercedes. I compensate some what for the service costs by waiting for them to send me discount coupons so if you own an Audi make sure the dealership has your text and email info.

If you are primarily thinking about space and budget, Atlas is the choice - especially if you don't mind the spongy-bouncy ride. If you are looking for luxury, comfort AND passing power, Q7 - I've test driven both and ended up w/my 2017 Q7 3.0 T Exclusive edition - expensive but man oh man... effortless torque and power that it just wants to keep going faster and faster. Only difference with 2017 to 2018 and present that is important to help you make up your mind are the supercharger from 2017 and older are more reliable than the turbocharger (more oil burning, heat soak and turbochargers of course emits MORE heat equals more problems than suerpcharging).Audi only switch to turbocharging their V6 & V8 to benefit the 'mild hybrid' regarding charging the batteries. Once you are out of warranty tune it and you'll easily go over 400HP. The key to keeping it long term and saving money, do your DIYs (I saved THOUSANDS by doing the preventative maintenance ex: did my own 90K kms which cost me no more than $700CAD ordered from ECSTuning and did it myself vs Audi dealer cost of $3KCAD before pandemic, Audi states oil change every 15k KMs... do it every 7k-10k kms and she'll always run like new, Audi states differentials and transmissions are sealed systems and "lifetime" (complete BS), do it every 90k KMS - 110K KMS - don't wait till something goes wrong.If your considering a used Q7, avoid that first gen because that was a tire shredder. BMW... too much plastic engine bay parts, higher failure rates and leaks.MB rides like the Atlas but with much better amenities. Volvo have more electric complexities. Infiniti have very little new innovation since their financially going downhill.

I’ve been a big fan of the Q7 from the beginning. They always appeared quiet and refined, style-wise. And there only a handful of brands can match their interior fit and finish. The VW Atlas question was an interesting one. I’ve been asked that myself. My answer was… No. Period. The Audi is more akin to the Volkswagen ‘Touareg’ than a loaded VW Atlas. If you’ve had the privilege of experiencing it’s Germanic feeling of substance (weight?) than you might appreciate the difference. The VW Atlas is mass produced for Americans. It does a great job at that and looks great doing it. But it just isn’t in the same vehicle league. Thanks for the video.

Most top quality Volkswagens had, for lack of a better word(s)… absolutely ridiculously impossible to spell names! Its not just that Touareg… the Phaeton? Arteon? Phideon? Tacqua? Amarok? Saveiro? Difficult for no reason… is pretentious. Afterall, Volkswagen is not Alfa Romeo. They keep the simple names like Golf, Rabbit, ID 4, ID5, ID6, ID Buzz , California and Jetta for the American/Canadian market. I think those Germans think we’re less edumacted than we is.

I owned the first model year Touareg for almost 10 years and loved it (except for my average 14 mpg). When the electrical system started malfunctioning I moved onto the debut of the Infiniti JX35 now QX60. I liked the new tech (360 camera) but it lacked the solid feel of the Touareg. In 2019 it was time for an update and I thought I’d be happy enough going back to VW for the Atlas. I purchased a fully loaded SEL premium. It was so plastic-y. It was fine but I never “loved” it. With the crazy used car market I decided to get what I really wanted. I was able to trade my almost 3 year old Atlas in for 90% of what I paid for it. I love my Q7 Prestige- it really does remind me of my original much loved 2003 VW Touareg (at over twice the price of what I paid 19 years ago…). There is no comparison between the Atlas and Q7. I’ve owned both and at almost twice the price I feel the Q7 was worth the upgrade. Size wise is the only place the Atlas excels. I’m hoping the Q9 launches before I’m looking for my next vehicle.
@kellingtonlink956
@kellingtonlink956 2 жыл бұрын
Very solid points. Your experiences confirm my thoughts. The Touareg wasn’t cheap and it wasn’t exactly fuel efficient, but they always left an impression of solidity… almost tank like (as well as their Phaeton). Im glad you were fortunate to own one (even despite the higher end of life maintenance issues (electrical)). Cheers!

Acura reliability hasn’t been that great over the past few years particularly the MDX. The new model is too new to tell, but the previous model got poor scores even in the last year of production when you would expect the kinks to be worked out. Honda has also been struggling. German cars are usually less reliable than the Japanese brands, but not by much anymore.

the new for 2020 turbo v6 is not related to the previous supercharged v6. Despite what the video says, this is a new engine. It launched in 2019 with the A6

I have this car and love it especially the comfort and driving reliability for long hauls in the Southwest US. But as we have long stretches of desolate country with horrific temperatures, I hate the fact that this car has NO SPARE TIRE! I’ve gotten stuck in the middle of nowhere at sundown on July 3rd with a flat. If it weren’t for luck and a state trooper that knew how to patch a tire, who knows what would’ve happened. AUDI! @@andreaspencer9813 Thank you very much for clarifying. Pretty abysmal numbers for the hybrid system which makes me wonder why VW does not use something more in line with what Toyota uses. The hell the bigger engine Q7 is a value in any way... Not true!... 18 City and 23 highway (???), and premium fuel is a NON-STARTER compared to other decent non luxury offerings, with other luxury brands that already have 50% or more fuel economy, even with the bass Q7 engine (with still horrible gas mileage) and those other manufacturers only needed to leap a year or so later in technology, to lately bring MUCH more updated and value-minded hybrids and phevs! The Q7, to me, is still not even close to the value of the more updated powertrains that have already only come out in the last year or two! Audi better do something soon, cuz their midsize segment is kind of looking dismal to me... And the current electric market, with its heavy dose of Earth-killing needs, might prove that car companies have to improve soon, or else, when considering the current market with 5,000 lb vehicles that took five times more resources from our planet to promulgate... ?! Audi needs to let-go the hell from Volkswagen... Sheeeze!

I think they underestimate mpg after dieselgate. I get 30 mpg on my commute using adaptive cruise control. My combined mpg over almost 4,000 miles has been 25 mpg. I get better mpg with my Q7 than I did with the Atlas which offsets the premium fuel. I didn’t buy it hoping for improved gas mileage but it definitely gets better mileage than is reported. It could always be better but I’m happy with the better than predicted gas mileage. (My standards are probably low since I owned a Touareg that consistently got 15 mpg…)

Let's be serious, and get past this giddy review that is very misleading. We have driven Audi A8's for 25-years and at one time Audi was a class leader, but the shine is gone for traditional Audi buyers.The styling is getting very dated, the technology has descended into catchup vs. class leading, and it became obvious 10-years ago that Audi had transferred their technology team too focus on the EV world. Audi does not sell the number one luxury sedan anymore, as several luxury brands have stolen their thunder.
