For me it's not the looks - it's the steering. If I am buying this car, it's most likely for fun almost-daily use. So, things like inputs and feedback are important. Even with that possible issue, the rest of the M240i is pretty darn compelling. The power and the engine sound would be easy to enjoy in any situation, and I do really like the new interior design - modern and upscale while remaining purposeful. I've always been a Toyota and Lexus guy, but when my wife got a 330i M-Sport last year, I started to come around on new BMWs after living with it for almost a year now. That car is fantastic to drive, so I can only imagine what a coupe-ified version with that sweet six cylinder would be like.

For someone who's never owned a luxury car, closest I got was an is350, when I saw and sat in this car I could feel how different it felt over mainstream vehicles. Same as I felt when I put on a luxury watch, coming from wearing seikos and Citizens. Love it. And I think I'm going to save up for 3-4 more months and order one in the summer. Hopefully I'll get it by next winter.

The 2nd gen IS 350 was insane when it came out. To this day it still has quite a lot of interior features. But Lexus has fallen behind in their interior dept

@@inosurrender8327 I drove a 2nd-gen IS 350 recently for the first time, and I own a 2021 IS 350. I don't think anyone would argue the new car's interior is "fancier" outside of the gauges and screens, but the solidity of the new car is better than the '08 I drove. Though, it also had 165k miles, so maybe that's to be expected. Really what stood out to me was the steering. It was a bit slower of a rack compared to my '21, but it had pretty nice weighting and feel. The transmission was terrible though. Very lazy, took forever to downshift. People complain about Lexus's transmissions, but the 8-speed in the RWD cars feels like it's decades ahead of the 6-speed that was in the 2IS.

You don’t have to press buttons to access sport+. You just hold the down shift paddle and it automatically switches mode, selects the lowest gear and you’re off. It’s even better than launch control in that it’s really useful on a daily basis.

I have a 2021 XDrive M340. Most of the mechanical components between the cars are exactly the same, with the exception of the mild hybrid system being missing from the M240. You can slide the back end out on command as long as you are in sport traction mode or have traction / stability control off. In fact, I’ve slid the back end out 30 degrees or so accelerating from a stop in a tight corner in sport traction mode, so I probably wouldn’t recommend you defeat the system entirely when on the street.

@@misterdragzon Interesting. The Xdrive to me is easy to slide in sport traction mode (within reasonable limits), especially from a stop and below 25 or 30 with some steering angle. I think your issue may actually be the tires. May car came with 225 series Pirelli all seasons. You could slide them like a Toyota BRZ. I have since upgraded to 245's all around, and I noticed it is more difficult, but since they are still all seasons (Bridgestone Comp2 AS), I can still slide the car. If it was 80 degrees and they were PS4S (which I think are 255 width if they come from the factory), it probably would be difficult -- which is probably what BMW intended since they want higher overall performance out of that package. Last, IMO, I think that the new version of Xdrive is mostly rear wheel drive in sport traction mode and under certain parameters (sport mode or above, no windshield wipers on, and not under freezing for instance). The car is not that powerful if you were say sending 50 / 50 power to each axle.

I love this car and had one ordered. It’s really fantastic. I canceled my order as features that were previously available like adaptive cruise control, wireless phone charging, etc. were no longer available. Very disappointed, but will try and reorder in the future - they couldn’t give me any estimates when these features would be available again (if ever). I’m annoyed that these unobtainable features are presented by reviewers on the demo cars.

For $55K this thing really is pretty competitive; a loaded Mustang GT or Camaro SS is about the same price. I'd be real tempted to buy a year-old M340i, though. Better styling and more practicality. My neighbor had an M340i and loved it; they just upgraded to an RS5 Sportback.

The Camaro and Mustang are much faster though and the Camaro handles much better. This is the only review where I've heard someone praising the handling characteristics. This AWD system is FWD biased...gross. Also, no one is actually getting these for $55k, they are being marked up like crazy and the options are not cheap. Meanwhile, I got my Camaro LT1 (SS minus leather seats) for $40k last October.

@@huehuehue-x3c The Camaro and Mustang are definitely faster in the top-end, but I think it'd be pretty hard to beat the AWD system off the line (though I live in the South, so it doesn't really matter). The AWD system isn't FWD-based; it's RWD-based. BMW makes 3 cars in the US that offer FWD-based systems: the X1, X2, and 2-Series Grand Coupe (which is built on an entirely different platform from the 2-Series Coupe). My neighbor got his 2021 M340i a little before the pandemic started, so there were no markups back then. I think he paid around $60K (it stickered for 1-2K above that). If you load up a Mustang GT like the car in this video (adaptive cruise, heated seats, B&O sound, auto transmission) you'll be somewhere in the mid-fifties. I'd probably take the BMW over either the Camaro or the Mustang; I just can't deal with those interiors anymore. They're super fun to drive, though.

@@huehuehue-x3c Nope, it’s absolutely a RWD based system. It defaults to 40/60 F/R and can send 100% of the power to the front or rear on demand. If you put it in sport mode, it will default to sending even more power rearward. It’ll definitely let you get a little sideways. The 2 Series Coupe, 3 Series Sedan, and 4 Series coupe/convertible/gran coupe are all the same underneath: longitudinally mounted engine with a transfer case behind the transmission. You may be thinking of Audi; many of their cars with longitudinally mounted engines have AWD systems that default to 50/50 F/R and have engines ahead of the front axle, leading to under steer tendencies.

Just had a spirited test drive in one today in Sport mode down the motorway and through some twisty corners on the way back, my thoughts are its very smooth, high overall quality feel, fantastic cabin and dash , much better than BMW's of old also its definitely quick but also a bit too refined for my liking, too mature, not enough exhaust or engine noise and didnt try and kill me "even a bit", reminded me of a Honda sports motorcycle "a bit too good at its job" Im not saying its bad in any way it will suit alot of people but for me im thinking an M2 may be more suitable, Im yet to drive one but what I have seen they look a bit more wild and raw, less businessman and more hooligan, anyway just my 2 cents

After waffling between the new Supra (BMW in Toyota clothing) and the "will it ever arrive" Nissan Z, I just put in my deposit and order for this BMW M240i Xdrive. It's a better value than the Supra with all-wheel drive, gives a you more passenger and cargo room, better driver ergonomics and road visuals, easier to service (I heard the Supra can be challenging to find qualified mechanics), and in the end it's a pure BMW. The "Z"? Even if it does make it here, you'll pay a huge premium even if you can get your hands on one. The M240i is a killer deal and much more of a sure bet than the other two (great as they are).

When in doubt, get it in black. Hides the plastic cladding and smooths out all the busyness.
