GM states that LG Chem is being billed for the recall of the 2019-2022 Bolts.... to the tune of over $1 billion USD. LG Chem's stock price cratered today on that financial news -- it lost 11% of its stock market valuation. A very harsh lesson in the importance of manufacturing quality control for LG Chem. Hopefully, the Bolt replacement will come to market with GMs Ultium battery packs soon.... and with a new model name. I leased a 2017 Limited. The battery thing, while a marketing challenge for chevrolet the risk analysis of the fires per vehicle is really low. it's not great that it happens, and battery fires are definitely more energetic than a gasoline fire. If Chevy wasn't making it right for previous owners i'd be all torches and pitchforks but they seem to be doing the right thing. I gave back my lease in April and have been looking for the replacement car. I dunno if I'll do another Bolt yet, but its significantly cheaper than it was in 2017 too which is a killer feature for the bolt, better interior, lower price. It was a great car and hopefully more people will enjoy this version
@60secondsOr3 жыл бұрын
GM lost all credibility with its super slow reaction to the battery fire issue. Sorry, but only a dolt would even consider buying or leasing a Bolt. I’m stuck with my 2020 Bolt lease for another 16 months. Every day I must wonder whether this will be the day something horrible happens. Maybe they should change the name to Chevy Dolt, because that’s what you would have to be to trust GM again anytime soon.
@dmitchellhomes3 жыл бұрын
Super slow? I think GM moved pretty fast when you consider when the fires occurred and how rare they are. A recall like this involves billions of dollars, and you have to have evidence it is right thing to do before pulling the trigger on something like that. GM was first convinced this problem only related to batteries manufactured in Korea, before 2020. Only in the last 30 days were there fires involving newer Bolt with USA made batteries', and GM reacted like lightning to those. I hear the defective cells are about 1 in 10K, so they are hard to find, and that takes time. Obviously LG's quality control is the problem here, and not GM's management.
@60secondsOr3 жыл бұрын
@@dmitchellhomes The Chevy Bolt EV has been recalled twice for the risk of battery fire after a dozen fires in a little more than a year. The first recall was in November, with a fix provided in May, which did not fully work. GM then recalled them again in July after another fire on July 1 and a second on July 2 and two on July 25th. On August 16th GM announced that they would start replacing all battery modules in affected Bolts, the same day that a 2020 caught fire as well. This recall has restricted vehicles to about 60% of the battery capacity, and vehicles should not be charged unattended or parked indoors. No fix is currently available. So the problem is about a year old. If the fire department came to your house about a year after you called 911, would that be fast or slow? GM thought they could dodge the bullet with a software fix. But that didn't work. Did they really think it would? Are they incompetent, cheap or simply indifferent to customer safety? None of the options are appealing.
@dmitchellhomes3 жыл бұрын
@@60secondsOr Like I said, it takes time to investigate, figure out what happened, investigate the production for problems, and only then can you see there is definitely a manufacturing defect that is widespread, and form a recall. Tesla Plaid had a fire 2 weeks after deliveries started, was there a recall? NOPE! Tesla Model S 85 series have had a bunch of fires, no recall. GM first recalled the Bolt to install advanced diagnostic software to try to sniff out the bad battery cells, for replacement. Was that to save cost? of course... and it failed, once they figured out that it failed, they instantly recalled the fleet. Now, you make think they should recall every vehicle on every problem, but that is not how it works. You have to first understand the problem, and what is going wrong, then you try a fix, does not work, then you recall them, and that is exactly what GM did. Its actually a great example of crisis management, and was done well. Tesla on the other hand has not recalled the S-85, they did however send out a software update that cut owners range, and charging speed (google for class action lawsuit info) And Tesla added battery fires to their warranty, so that they can replace the cars that burn, and insurance claim statistics are not skewed.

I really dislike (hate?) GM's decision to put the brake lights low in the rear bumper and not in the lights on the hatch in the middle of the car where they were in 2017-2021 models. It's a big safety issue, IMHO.

Very nice review Tom. Thank you. We are in the midst of making our home EV-friendly. Next month, a 13.5KWH solar array will be installed, delivering 125% of our power needs. The extra 25% is with an EV in mind. Here's something that came as a surprise. My home, which has just come out of an extensive renovation, uses 11,000 KWH in a year at a cost of $1500. The surprise is in the realization that my Toyota 4Runner costs a lot more to run.....$2400 of gas in a year. I went from an old Subaru to a Bolt last October in Colorado and the Bolt is great, if boring, in the snow. I put some CrossClimate 2's on it, that plus the traction control and weight keeps it planted in the snow. I can't do donuts or play in the snow as well as in the 'Roo, but for normal driving it was far better than I expected. February, March and April had more snow than normal, often 10+ inches on the ground, almost 100 inches total, and the Bolt did great. The regen braking is especially nice in the snow because your wheels cannot lock up, plus one pedal driving gets you to pay attention and start stopping sooner. You don't have to worry about snow wrecking the radiator, because there is none. In rain the Bolt is better because you can practically drive the thing underwater. The whole powertrain is sealed, and doesn't need air. The 12v accessories are water resistant, but probably not ip68 like the powertrain. To be fair my 'Roo was a 1993, so no traction control or ABS, but the Bolt is good in the snow. The best car I've driven in the snow was my 1986 Subaru GL, that little 2 door hatchback was an absolute snow demon. Put it in 4lo and you could pull one of these modern SUVs that only pretend to be offroad capable up a snowy hill.

I chuckled at some of the comments in your review and your offhand dismissal of the Kia Niro-EV. Based on my driving behavior and staying in fast-enough-for-me Eco mode I get 347 miles on a charge in spring/summer/fall Atlanta weather. The Niro-EV has a sunroof, decently sized vertical-not-angled rear door storage pockets, mesh pockets on the back of both front seats, its lane keeping assist maintains a rock-steady path down the center or any lane, and cruise control (standard, not optional) works flawlessly. I own a Niro-EV and test drove a VW ID.4 out of curiosity. The ID.4 in sport mode has slower acceleration than the Niro-EV in Eco mode. ? why is there a reference to ''brake pedal'' I thought these EV's don't use a dedicated brake pedal but instead you just step off the gas pedal to come to a complete stop? (this question comes as I heard him say something that sounds odd to me at minute 2:53
@DrivenCarReviews5 ай бұрын
Because there is a brake pedal and it is used to stop the vehicle. In most EVs, the first part of the pedal travel is recuperation drag, the farther it's pushed the more the hydraulic brakes are feathered in. For emergency situations, you need the stopping power of real binders, not motor/generator drag. FWIW, over the years, I've started opting out of "one pedal drive" since I feel I don't react to emergency situations as optimally. In most EVs, the rate of drag is adjustable, you can set it to your liking. It's a personal choice.

@@DrivenCarReviews Thank you for taking the time to respond, I 'm still learning, thankfully the more I research, the more the answers are coming, by any chance do you know first hand how the ''used 4K EV taxable income credit works ''? I only know the general overview, but my question is highly specific and important for the 2017 models that now are available for under 15,000 and nobody seems to know the exact answer with good confidence:

I work in car sales, and my lot currently has a 2022 Bolt with a max range indicated at 404 miles with a full charge. It also doesn't show an existing recall, so it has the new battery. It seems like they made a lot of nice upgrades. If they could just improve their charging speeds it would be great all around.

Fascinating and informative as always. I just bought a 5 cup-coffee maker that disappoints me. Turns out it makes 5 times 5 ounce cups, so total 25 ounces, just two mugs. The box promised "automatic" warming tray. I thought that meant it would turn OFF automatically, but no, that only means it turns ON automatically. What's this got to do with Tom Voelk and Driven? Well, someday when the chips return, I hope to buy a new EV. I can not afford the sort of buyer's remorse I am suffering with my $40 coffeemaker on that grand a scale. So I watch car reviews with extreme attention and I really appreciate these thorough and honest reviews.
@nelsonc61733 жыл бұрын
Why may I ask would you suffer buyer's remorse with an EV? Just buy a Tesla? Great track record and great charging network....sure it's not perfect but nothing is. Just look at your coffee maker. Plus people disappoint all the time.

Thanks for the video, I am very seriously going to order a 2023 with GM's advertised price drop. I've been wanting to see/drive one for some time, in Virginia Beach they are very very rare to see (despite VAB being Tesla infested). The used ones when they can be found are as or more expensive than new. I want the 2LT model, and the red looks good. I do a 60 mile round trip commute, a mixture of highway (tunnel traffic counts as city) and city. There are three 1LT's in Newport News, I may go by there and see if I can get inside one.

Wholefully and fatally inadequate. That's the best description of the DC fast charging speed when compared to other evs like the ID4. And you're as much at fault for maintaining opaqueness when you describe it. Shout it out! . . .Make the GM engineers squirm. They have completely failed. Better to just design evs to charge at home. Nuts.

5:09 The laws of physics dictate that the faster you go, the more energy you will consume. Electric cars give a better presentation of this fact than gasoline cars. Gasoline cars are very inefficient when they accelerate or stand idling, which is what happens a lot in city driving. They would also get better MPG in the city than on the highway if they never had to stop at traffic lights. Electric cars don't need to idle their motors when they're stopped, can regenerate while braking, and their torque makes for much more efficient acceleration, therefore their city consumption is lower. However, these aren't significant advantages on the highway, where the weight of the batteries hurts electric cars. Gasoline cars actually get more efficient as you drive, because fuel burns off and reduces the vehicle's weight.

One of the major issues with EV's is in the support area. Not too many dealers have certified EV technicians who can perform maintenance or repairs. Even if EV's are low maintenance, you have to find a dealership with a service technician who is certified and trained to work on EV's. With EV auto sales representing 2%, dealerships have a hard time justifying training a technician. With a limited number of technicians to go around, dealerships have to share resources to do the maintenance. That could be one of the reasons that the dealers weren't pushing Chevy Volts when they first came out.

Excellent review and I think you sold me on the Bolt. I really do like the red color! You think with production coming back in April and with the newer 2023 model coming out around summer time, you think Dealerships will cut down the prices for the older models? Or will they do what everyone else has been doing and add ridiculous mark-ups?

I own a 2019 Bolt EV which I love. Bought it in late 2020 with >10k miles. Got my new battery in January at 17500 miles. Mine is an LT without any fancy or practical upgrades, so no DCFC. But I love it! It always recharges overnight, but I cannot drive it across the state as it would take much too long to recharge. I think your video is a fair evaluation of the Bolt, perhaps one of the best low-end EVs not called Tesla.

Ok, I scanned all the comments and no mention of your guess of a 230 mile range MINUS the recommended 70 mile reserve = 160 mile actual range. Kinda reminds me of Toyota saying the RAV4 Prime will go 600 miles but only if you run the tank empty. Or start on top of a mountain.
@DrivenCarReviews3 жыл бұрын
Defending GM is GMs job but let's live in the real world. The 70 mile reserve is a recommendation, not a hard and fast rule that GM is implementing (because it could do that with a software update). I've only talked to 4 owners but none of them were bothered by that (the furthest one of them drove was a 65 mile commute daily. They charge nightly. The only concern I heard was resale. One didn't like charging outside so much.
