At the 2022 CTWC, over 100 Classic Tetris pros gathered at the Portland Retro Gaming Expo to vie for 48 seeds. Qualifying consisted of 2 hour attempts where players would try to rack up as many great scores as possible. In a 48-seed bracket, the Top 16 seeds earn a bye out of Round 0, while the bottom 32-seeds compete for a spot in Round 1.

In the 1990 Nintendo World Championship competition, Tetris was the game to beat. The winner, Thor Aackerlund, is still seen by many as the best to have ever played. Today’s Classic Tetris tournaments are played on that same version of Nintendo Tetris, using original NES game systems, controllers, and Tetris cartridges. In 2009, a player named Harry Hong became the first to achieve the highest possible score of 999,999 points. Inspired by this achievement, filmmaker Adam Cornelius produced a short film about Harry called “Max-Out”, and launched a Kickstarter campaign to document the world of competitive Tetris. As word of Adam’s Kickstarter campaign spread, rumors of max-out scores from other Tetris Masters began to surface, threatening the supremacy of Harry’s achievement. With the help of Nintendo World Championship veteran Robin Mihara, Adam searched for all of the Tetris Masters he could find. Jonas Neubauer emerged as an early max-out artist, along with the elusive original champ Thor Aackerlund. The idea of bringing these and other NES Tetris Masters together to compete in a live tournament became an obvious and irresistible proposition which was artfully captured in the 2010 feature length documentary Ecstasy of Order: The Tetris Masters. Under the leadership of producer Vince Clemente, The Classic Tetris World Championship is currently held at the Portland Retro Gaming Expo, an annual event which has hosted the tournament since 2012. Chuck Van Pelt and his organizing committee have built the PRGE into the largest classic gaming expo in the country, drawing around 10,000 attendees. Every year the scores get higher. Tbh, several players seem better than Eric pre-29, what really mattered in the past: efficiency etc.. But now that post-29 is everything, it seems being more efficient doesn't change a thing.

@@xenotypos I think it still matters because having a higher score at Lv. 29 gives a cushion of sorts for when you top out that your opponent has to chase down. I feel like it would be much more mentally taxing to know you have to chase down a score rather than it's your opponent that has to chase you down.

This is amazing to watch. The top 2 keep pushing the bar higher and higher each year. KZbin's algorithm first recommended a CTWC video to me in 2016, I watched it and was hooked. Who can forget the Boom Tetris for Jeff era, Jonas racking up championship after championship, and then Joseph coming on scene with two titles of his own and ushering in a wave of new talent. This tournament is awesome to watch every year and I hope to attend and meet some of the competitors in person in 2023.

I think next year CTWC might as well make 2 or 3 divisions for Rollers, Hypertappers and DAS in order to preserve the "Classic" Tetris. So that players who enjoys playing it without having to practice a specific technique but being a good construction worker. And also, If there is no change in the game, every championships will become endurance battle. That is just pure headache for players.

I'm actually watching this video for research on a video about competitive video games. In the last couple hours I've watched Smash tournaments, Pokemon tournaments, DOTA and COD tournaments. By far this tournament has the best energy I've seen. The crowd getting pumped, the players and commentators joking and laughing. It's such a positive and fun energy that makes this really fun to watch.

Started watching when Jonas played Jeff. Loved watching Joseph dethrone Jonas. Sad day in the gaming world when Jonas passed away, but looking at the evolution this is crazy. Moved to Oregon right before pandemic so missed a tournament live, but love the wholesomeness of the CTWC community. Props to yall

Once Saelee came into the picture and won two years in a row, the huge growth after he won, etc. But I feel for Koryan, he probably had his best chance of winning when Joseph took his first win, when he got Runner up. I don't think he'll ever get top 10 again. along with some others.

Unbelievable... is what I would say if I hadn't watched all the CTMs in the last couple of years. Honetly though, the level these guys have achieved in this game is beyond unbelievable! Can't wait to see what comes next. Eric was like a machine, reminded me of Stackrabbit, just wouldn't top out no matter what sequence of pieces, what misdrops... just a machine. How anyone can maintain that level of play both physically and mentally for so long is beyond me! Exceptional tournament!
