One thing I’ve seen in the comments that applies to a lot of buyers-since the bed is basically just an F-150 bed, thousands of accessories are immediately available. Also you don’t have to worry about some company that makes a cool truck going out of business and parts being hard to find (this is one reason Rivian does not look great to me).

@@solomonmarcus5496 I think there are two types of buyers, people who want an unusual looking vehicle and people who want ordinary good design. Historically unusual designs have been hot for a while (like the PT Cruiser) but often are viewed as just ugly later. The basic F-150 look has been around a long time and slowly evolves, and buyers like it.

It may not be as “fun” as the Rivian, or as “cool” as the Hummer, but I think that’s the point. It seems like every car company feels like they need to make their car look super different, and/or copy the interior of Teslas to be a true EV. It’s nice to see a company just take a current vehicle and just make it electric, without all the unnecessary song and dance.

Truck buyers, you know the people that have actually made GM, Ford, and Dodge millions in sales and will continue to buy trucks when they aren't cool anymore, don't tend to want interesting or artistic design. This is the reason why most all traditional trucks look relatively similar. Those other E-Trucks are lifestyle vehicles, which will sell well now, but cattle ranchers, farmers, and construction workers are never going to buy them for their work. They will buy this. That is the genius of their "lazy design."

Having it look more or less like a normal F150 was the absolute SMARTEST thing they did when they designed this truck. Not only does it keep the price down, it also keeps their normal truck owners interested. I personally hate the fact that the E Silverado looks like a fancy Avalanche. They should have kept the same styling, then I might be interested in going electric with GM.

For those wondering why you’d need to jump an electric vehicle: The electronics are still low voltage and often shared with the gas vehicles. But in particular the relays for an EV main locomotive battery and the key fob stuff are controlled by 12V computers. All the classic electronics like the stereo, power windows, screens, etc are usually the same 12V stuff the auto industry knows how to work with. So if the 12V battery is dead, then it can’t run the safety checks to engage and connect the big main battery to start or charge the vehicle. There’s no more starter motor and you don’t need all the cold cranking amps anymore but you still need enough to engage the high voltage circuitry. The 12V battery will be kept charged by the high voltage system where possible. This is also good for maintenance as the high power stuff is only in limited locations and it isn’t like 400V or whatever is running everywhere to kaboom in an accident.

Finally we have reached the point where automakers aren’t designing their electric and hybrid vehicles to look like they’re from Neptune. Most consumers would consider an electric vehicle as their daily car if it can do most of the things of a normal vehicle and looks like one too. The Lightning and Maverick are definitely back-to-back home runs for Ford. The consumers have definitely spoken with all of the orders before ever even seeing one in person in the case of both models. Now, just offer one with a smaller screen and more knobs and switches at the $35k range and we are golden.

Agreed - I’m not at EV guy, but I think this thing is going to dominate the market. Ford understands that the majority of truck buyers want it to actually look like a truck, and they are also able to take advantage of the economies of scale of already making so many ICE trucks that can share many components. I think the Rivian is really made for your average Google employee who wants to haul their $15K mountain bike rather than a real truck buyer, and don’t even get me started with the farce that is the Cybertruck!

Engineer here, you noticed that the ride of the suspension feels different, and I can tell you why. The TLDR is that the lightning both weighs more *and* has less lift capacity. The Lightning is configured to lift 2,000 lbs and weighs 6500+ pounds while a typical equvalent would be configured to lift 3,200 pounds and weighs around 55-5700 pounds. This makes the relative acceptable weight range of a regular F-150 around 50-60% of the vehicles weight while the Lightnings range is only 30% of its weight. This means that Ford can equip the Lightning with suspensions that are closer to their capacities, which means that they will be less stiff (and therefore less jarring) to deflection. Combined this with a lower center of mass (which reduces body roll and a few other factors) and tada, the best handling F-150 on the market. To counter this, the first 500-1,000 pounds you load a regular F-150 with will typically improve its ride quality.

The Ford Lightning is better than any other truck in the world. I mean, nobody can argue otherwise. There is nothing that comes close to this for the price, not even a diesel or gas truck. With 572 horsepower on tap, and 900 ft lbs of torque, and no transmission to burn up, it makes more sense to use this truck for work, as compared to an extremely unreliable diesel. Diesel trucks last a long time, but sometimes they break, and when their engine breaks they cost $8,000 to repair. Diesels do break down, sometimes they blow head gaskets, or the transmission can burn up. The electric truck just has less moving parts to break or wear out, and they have a ridiculous 8 year drivetrain warranty!

Whenever "gas" equivalency becomes the breaking value proposition then you know you're not ready for the entirely new world of EV transportation. Here's the truth, an EV platform can do things that an ICE platform cannot, and never will be able to fuel savings aside. Tesla figured out early on that there goal wasn't to merely provide an EV version of the standard 4 door sedan because there would forever be the Volkswagen TDI crowd saying "but I get 50 mpg and its $25K cheaper than the model S". When a Tesla test drive includes a demonstration of the key fob alone bringing the car out of the parking stall/garage with know one inside, or Summon mode where the car finds you in the parking lot, or pre heating the cabin in your garage, or over the air software updates, you know its not about fuel savings, its about a whole new technology platform. Personally, my BMW i3 does none of the Tesla stuff, it just saves me nearly $400 a month in gas, while breaking a life long ridiculous addiction to gasoline, that's all it does. Ford is doing as little as possible to impress people at this point, they know their consumer base well.

It boggles my mind people thing that'a a cool feature, I could see using my truck as a 'rolling battery' bank for small jobs: say an air compressor for airing down tires or inflating water toys at the lake. This is a modified F-150 platform where GM Silverado EV BT1 is a EV from ground up next year. Wait for Ford 2025 redesign. The Ford F-150 Lightning is already being promised a redesign for the 2025 model year. Reuters mentioned this when discussing Ford’s production plans for the Lightning.

My pile of an '06 F150 has more V8 than they offered in the rustang in that year, with 300HP and 360ft-lb when it's running. And it has a fairly modern IFS that rides amazingly well. Ford pickups outside of the Malaise era with a 460 were also fast AF from gas station to gas station.

Ford has been making trucks for a long time and know what people want in a truck. This electric truck has a lot of the gas version features they have well researched how people use their trucks. Some of the completion doesn't. Rivian is cool but the camera doesn't have a hitch feature. Ford has been making that in a Kings Ranch for over a decade.

That was one of the smartest moves that Ford did, at least price wise. It's gonna be a hit and sell marvellously. Wait and see.

They will sell all of them as long as they stay in business. Maybe 15k this year. Hopefully 80k next year. Wait list is long, so price gouging will be happening for a while.

@@davedavenport8673 price gouging won’t happen. When the Maverick was being introduced, the focal point of it being so cheap was selling point. When Ford found out that the sellers were upscaling the prices they sent out an email to all of their vendors saying that if it was found out they were price gouging that Ford would pull their license to sell their products

Gotta admit, seems Ford knocked it out of the park, truly. Actually "making enough" being their real issue seems almost like a non-issue for them so long as resources are available. I mean they are the company that revolutionized car manufacturing, so I think they can handle it.

I WANT ONE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! in my opinion the lightning is the BEST electric truck out there !!! once I get my funds together , I will be going to the lightning factory and custom order me one ; want to get one with charging ports on both sides of the truck , see if I can get the truck lifted so I could get two extend range battery packs - separated by something like an aluminum cage to allow airflow around the batteries so as to air cool them and try to get the bed length to at least 6 feet maybe 6.5 feet long to get my custom made conversion truck top on it
