Why does everyone always make the argument "Electronic range is effected when you are towing." As if the fuel range of any truck is not effected when you are towing. It is just physics and no something that only electric trucks are privileged to.

@@user-tb7rn1il3q As long as you use it locally it's a great truck and will do everything that my 2014 F150 V8 flex fuel 4x4 heavy duty would do. I was lucky to get 10 mpg when towing my trailer. Now with the lightning I can get 35 mpg equivalentcy easily when towing the same trailer. Everyone that complains about the lightning never consider it being used locally and charged at home. This is what it's made for, not for long distance traveling. If that's what you want the lightning isn't for you. Hauling with my lightning I can get as much as 70 mpg equivalentcy. No more ICE maintenance. No gas stations, no fumes, no noise. It's great.

The Pro Lightning is around $45k. It hauls fine with payload weight, it’s the aerodynamic drag when towing that eats range. Ford understands the working man’s truck. The Lightning is NOT for long hauls, but it very powerful and fast up to 200 miles. Any local, tough jobs on a farm or worksite and it’s perfect. It charges from 15-80 in about one a hour lunch break. Any fleet with work contained within 175-200 miles is a piece of cake for the Lightning.

You are still missing the point. EVERY light or medium duty truck will have it’s mileage and range tank when towing. The issue is charge time. A gas truck refills in 10 minutes. Plan on 2+ hours looking for, finding and using a fast charger. But, for most users that won’t matter.

Can you guys talk more about pedestrian and cyclist safety? These newer trucks are just too damn huge. I get it if you are hauling giant loads in the oil field but most of these trucks are driven by regular people. It seems dangerous to have these insanely fast 6,000 lb trucks with front ends higher than most people's chests (and far above children's heads).

Disagree a bit w/Mike that the Lightning canʻt do trucky things. It can. And more. Though most F150 owners donʻt do trucky things daily per Ford's research. The issues that make you say that I believe are really about the current lack of charging infrastructure, and how fast/slow it charges. If every gas station or Wal Mart was also a charging station location, the range drop wouldnʻt matter as much on longer hauls, being able to charge when needing without worry. So, thatʻs the challenge, needing to charge more often. But, in that case, you should already have a F250 or Ram 2500 diesel anyway. However, weʻre at the beginning of EV trucks, and technology and engineering will improve, but currently, charging infrastructure is not yet adequate for those who do want to tow/haul large loads over long distances. The other thing is how fast it takes to charge, which right now is around 45 minutes to get to 80%. Charging times are improving, and in time EVs for the masses will be more efficient and charge faster. Ford really does have a truck for every need, and the new clean sheet designs coming out will really change the conversation again. The Lightning PRO w/ER battery is really whatʻs most impressive for that "around town landscaper" type who can charge up at home every night and lives in a moderate climate. In the cold... yeah, the Lightning wouldnʻt be top of list.

Hopefully you are still reading comments on this episode. It took me 2 weeks to get through this video because I had to turn it off after 15 minutes because I was irritated with the three of you. Those 15 minutes were basically a bashing of the electric pickup truck because of its Towing range and a feeling that it just wouldn't be suitable for Towing. If you would look around KZbin there are numerous videos of the Ford Lightning Towing, there is even a video of two women towing a car across three states. The projected range was cut in half to about 120-150 MI, but their major problem was the infrastructure, finding charging units that weren't offline. Once they knew what their range limitations were they could plan their charging stops around that. But it was entirely doable. Now I agree in a situation like that in electric pickup truck is not the suitable vehicle, but you didn't discuss anything else about the truck, really, and that's what made this video so hard to watch. And Jennifer, you made the statement that your husband wanted to know what the electric truck was capable of doing to see if it fit in with his requirements, and then you never said what his requirements were and whether or not the Ford Lightning was capable of his requirements. What does he want a truck to do? Could this truck fit in with his requirements? It should be noted that weight by itself doesn't impinge on the distance like aerodynamics does, so you can have four people in the truck and something in the bed and it won't be the drag that aerodynamics is. I hope when your Ford Lightning comes in that you will test it more thoroughly, covering all sorts of cases of using this pickup truck, and Jennifer I hope that we get a review from your husband on using the Ford Lightning after he has used it for the Trucky things that he wants to. There are Ford truck owners who have placed orders for the Ford Lightning after they have borrowed one from a friend for a few days.

It seems like EV battery technology now is great for most purposes. Maybe in a few years battery technology will be better for things like towing and cold weather. I wish that EV vehicle makers would specify estimated range while under full load, with max towing, and under cold (sub-freezing) weather conditions. That would help set expectations so as not to turn away EV buyers who may end up buying the wrong vehicle for their needs.

The weight of the f150 varies from 4021 to 5014lbs. The Lightning weighs about 6500 lbs. IIHS states that you should not compare safety for vehicles that are more than 500lbs different in weight. So in a collision, this will inflict that much more damage to what will likely be a lighter vehicle. If you look at the GM EV pickups, it gets even more extreme as those can exceed 9,000 lbs. I understand that those with more wealth can afford better crash protection, and that lifted trucks can bypass the crash structure of lower vehicles and kill their occupants, but it seems we need some regulation so gross vehicle mismatch is mitigated.

The F150 Hybrid is the answer here. The hybrid includes the 2kW on board power, and for around $800 you can option the 7.2kW ProPower Onboard generator. I like that the Lightning exists, and it'll be a great truck for many, but I don't like how it overshadows the functionality of the Hybrid option. The latter allows the portable generator option without worrying about getting home or extended power outages.

As your call in segment illustrated temperature changes things alot. We also have an F150 Lightning on order, and we live in Yuma Az. Summer Temps frequently reach over 110°F. As our garage is too small for this truck, & I work nights, it will be left outside alot. I'm anticipating charging it once a week as my commute is only about 30miles round trip per day. Will the heat affect battery longevity?
@pstoneking3418
@pstoneking3418 2 жыл бұрын
I don't believe the heat will effect the trucks battery longevity because the cooling fans will turn on when the truck is just setting in the driveway not running. So obviously it will effect your range because it takes energy to keep the battery temperature down. How much range loss will depend on how much the cooling fan and A.C. has to run to keep the battery at the right temperature .

@ultratodd
@ultratodd 2 жыл бұрын
Some comments you made about range when towing and weight were misleading. The reviews by many others of the truck while towing highlighted the real problems with towing and the big problem is not the weight. It's the added drag from air resistance. A smaller trailer with equivalent weight and that's more aerodynamic has significantly better range than a big boxy trailer that catches the air. So most RVers with trailers may find that electric, for now, is not the way to go. But for the contractor hauling a chipper behind him, his range will be impacted but not by much. Before making comments on the impact on range, you need to do some real world testing. As for travel trailers, the worry about range is being addressed. Future travel trailers are being proposed with an auxiliary battery that will help power the tow vehicle. That could help overcome the loss of range and make the EV a much better tow vehicle than an ICE vehicle. Other improvements in making the towed vehicle more aerodynamic are also in a prototype stage and can improve range whether it's an ICE vehicle or an EV. Remember that ICE vehicles also lose range when towing.
@pstoneking3418
@pstoneking3418 2 жыл бұрын
Personally I don't see the range as big as issue as the lack of charging stations and the ridiculously high kwh charge. Towing and hauling you are correct. In fact local towing even large campers isn't that bad because at the slower speeds less wind resistance. But long distance traveling, this isn't the right vehicle for that.

Enough with the puns please. I don't understand the value of an electric truck. A hybrid truck makes way more sense to me. You can get the torque and the power of an electric truck but at the same time you can get incredible gas mileage with most of the ice engine providing generation of power electrically to the electrical motors. That seems way more efficient to me than having to worry about rain anxiety once you carry a heavy load. Plus if it's hybrid it won't need as much or as many batteries thus the truck itself would be lighter and not so ponderous.

Figured it out for where I live and the break even point (if gas stays high and electricity doesn’t go up) is 15 years with the current premium for the average electric or Phev over its gas counterpart. That’s IF the battery doesn’t need to be replaced. Resale on an electric vehicle with a battery that old is another gamble.

Have you looked at the price of pickup trucks? $60-$80k is commonplace. If you are blue collar maybe a well-used more basic truck makes sense. I understand buying a house for multiples of that, but the truck will depreciate and you are setting fire to your discretionary income.

You're taking public charging stations. First off DC fast chargers aren't good for the longevity of your battery, second if charging at home your kwh costs will most likely be in the range of $.07-$.15 per kwh. This isn't a truck one should purchase if you need to charge at public chargers.

CR, Is there ANY evidence the average Ford F150 driver or the average driver can safely handle 775 ft pounds of torque and all that horsepower?

The Lightning's onboard computer can handle the average maniac who slams on the accelerator. Not that I have stepped on the accelerator a few times.

Ev manufacturers and dealers are saying ev batteries are safe, kind of reminds me of tobacco producers saying the same thing about their products,.... we all know how that turned out !! Manufacturers will say anything to make a sale... Get out of the EV market while you can, it's not safe !
