Big difference between the twos. The MDX seem to be focusing more on sport-oriented luxury, whereas the GV80 focus on tech savvy luxury. They each will appeal to their own audiences.

If you want pure luxury go the GV80. If your tastes lead towards more sporty driving then go with the MDX Type S. Plus in my area the Acura Dealership was selling at MSRP the Hyundai dealer wanted $10,000 over. I walked very quickly. My choice the TYPE S.

@$10K less we opted for the MDX Type S Advanced. Plus Acura sold us the MDX @MSRP, which means it was closer to $20k less than the Genesis.

The Type S Advance or Elite (+$5000) is the more luxurious Type S model. Probably a better comparison to the GV80 Prestige Sig. It has full Milano leather, heated rear seats, dual front massaging seats, 16 way adjustable front seats, surround view camera, upgraded sound system, color HUD and the trim is painted (not the black plastic). I do think your review is spot on. If you want more sport the Acura is the way to go. The GV80 is more luxury focused. I personally think the Acura looks better and is more flexible. You can set it on comfort for that relaxed luxury feel or you can go crazy with Sport Plus and have a ton of fun with it. It really has a bunch of different personalities. I tested both of these and went with the Type S Advance. The flexibility and the looks just got me. I have also had a ton of luck with Acura products regarding reliability with is really important to me.

I love what Hyundai has acomplished, but I'm not a fan of the rear rocker panel. It detracts from the appearance IMHO. Maybe would look better in body color. I'm not a fan of the steering wheel either. Great effort but my choice likewise is the MDX. I've yet to test drive one, but love all the tech. Wife wants comfort over all so we'll see.

Great review! I’ve been comparing these two for a bit, currently driving the GV80 3.5L Prestige. These two are so similar yet also different in many ways for a very similar price. The 3.5L Prestige (which is most similar to compare to MDX type S) does not come with 3rd row but it is an option on that you either have to go for a cheaper package the advance package or more expensive with 2nd row captains chairs on the signature Prestige . GV80 is aimed at more luxury while MDX is more Sport. Genesis has up to 10 year 100k mike warranty for 1st owner, while MDX has 6yr 70k miles. MDX has air suspension which GV doesn’t, but feels more sport. MDX has a little more plastic, especially comparing the shifter, where the shift knob in GV is glass and buttons are a nice feeling metal. GV has power rear sunshades, microfiber suede headliner, 3D digital gauge, soft close doors with remote parking from fob. Can be hard to choose.

I can only speak for myself but I'm 25k miles into my GV80 3.5T and have had 0 issues. Only time I've been to the dealership is for scheduled maintenance. I did own a 2017 Honda Ridgeline and had to replace the transmission at 35k miles after multiple trips to the dealership. I know Acura is not necessarily equal to Honda but that swayed me away from the MDX.

The GV80 costs more that $10k above the Acura. What’s excluded here is cost of ownership, particularly long-term ownership. The Acura will both outlast the Genesis, and it will prove less expensive to maintain when it comes to reliability.

Acura seat ventilation doesn’t work at all in any Acura. I would’ve continued to buy Acura but I live where summers are HOT so that was and is a deal breaker. Genesis seat ventilation is even better than Lexus so I bought the 2020 GV80 Prestige and a year later I don’t regret it one bit.

Even if the GV80 isn't worth the extra $10K-$15K you can definitely see there is far more effort behind it and stellar attention to detail. This is especially impressive when you consider it's made by Hyundai. Material quality overall also looks better than the MDX. Reliability is still a big question mark for both, actually, but the Acura does seem less complex. More importantly to luxury car buyers, the GV80 sits on a proven & proper RWD based platform unlike the MDX, which sits on a modified econo-Accord FWD platform.

Ben, the price difference is immaterial. No matter how much more the Genesis might cost, I simply wouldn't pay any amount of money for a vehicle which has 3 cylinder deactivation on it. Acura turns what once was a pretty nice mid-size SUV into a POS. An engine as artificially emasculated as the MDX will never be as reliable or easy to maintain as the TT V6 in the GV80. Any enthusiast who believes a 6-4-3 cutoff is solid engineering is fooling him/her self. Once they begin to experience the astronomical bills for maintaining and repairing the Acura, they will learn any cost savings at purchase will be quickly exhausted. Go ahead, get the Acura, but when your friends tell you "I told you so," the MDX buyer will be filled with hypocritical angst.

You have absolutely no idea what you're talking about. Lol. Honda/Acura even said they went single turbo for reliability due to piping and maintenance. Honda makes every type of engine under the sun that are all reliable. Not to mention the j35 has been fine tuned over ten years now. Even with this new type s motor, I'd bet on Honda engineering any day over a Hyundai and a twin turbo at that.
