2022 GMC HUMMER EV Pickup | MotorWeek Road Test

For much of the late 1990s and early 2000s the Hummer was the macho-est of macho SUVs. But the Hummer and its multiple offshoots were also a major target of eco-warriors across the country. Well, after becoming a brief casualty to GM’s bankruptcy earlier this century, a new Hummer has arisen from the ashes. Refresh my memory. Did the quadrasteer actually do true rear wheel steering or is like 4 wheel steer like on a sports car?

@@bmstylee it did true 4 wheel steering up to 15 degrees in either the same direction as the front wheels or opposite directions, depending on the speed of the truck. The rear live axle had its own rack and pinion steering assembly driven by an electric motor.

Feel sorry for electric car drivers and future owners. They will simply have to learn the hard way .. as I did. These things are a huge hassle, all those lost hours sitting in those charging stations, huge anxiety, plus a outrageous expense in the long run. Good luck trying to sell a used Electric car with wore out battery modules. You'll find out nobody wants to pay the ridiculous price of batteries ... Batteries are very ... very expensive to replace ( thousands and thousands of dollars) ... and make no mistake, you will be replacing them. These batteries are highly toxic to our environment and a constant concern for fire, also a high potential for disaster to our surroundings. These new specialized automotive grade batteries ... are not green clean energy by any means... Don't fool yourself and certain don't listen to a manufacturer or salesperson, ... they will say anything, do anything to make a sale. I wish I knew all this before I bought my car . Do your own investigation before buying ! For some of you younger people, you probably already made the mistake, but that's how you learn in life !

Putting aside the rather impressive engineering that went into this, is it really a good idea to put a 9000lb, 1000HP vehicle into the hands of the average American driver? Seems like a huge waste of resources plus a legit safety concern for both the occupants as well as ANY vehicle they might collide with in an accident...

Smashing the thumbs up! 9000lbs???? The Rivian weighs over 7000lbs. That does not sound like an improvement. Massive track time though! Thanks to electric being instant power. Just as an aside, 10 minute recharge does not sound bad, unless you are fourth in line. It still does best what it did before, go off road. I did not have high hopes for this Hummer, but seems to have put themselves in a much better place than Jeep.

Yes, but worth noting that EV “gas stations” will have to be a rethink of the traditional layout. Because electricity is easier to distribute an EV “gas station” will be more like a parking lot, so less queuing up than traditionally.

This thing weighs about as much as 2 Honda Pilots or 3 Rav 4s and moves like a missile. It's insane. If you buy this vehicle, you don't rotate the tires, you replace them every 10k miles. When you take it in for service, the dealership doesn't measure how much meat you have left on your brake pads, they just take them off and put new ones on.

Note how that's because this has a huge battery. An ICE equivalent of this with the same power & acceleration would get like 5mpg and need frequent gas station stops, while this can just be plugged in to your house every night.

RIP to anyone that gets into a wreck with someone driving one of these monstrosities. This thing is a deathtrap with that much power and weight with virtually no handling or ability to stop quickly. Notice how there was no braking performance test shown here? I don't know if I remember a Motor week test without them showing at least a 60-0 brake test. Everyone clamours on about the "break neck speed" in reviews and then claim it doesn't want to stop because the brakes are terrible, good combo GM. If you think there's a practical use for this "vehicle" other than to feed some sort of toxic ego then you are in complete denial of reality.

EV has about half the part count of a gas car, but yet these EVs cost 2 to 4 times as much.?? It has its own type of pollution ( gases from Lithium or Ultium batteries) known to expel highly toxic gases both when charging and discharging. This added to our already polluted air. The total operating cost of these EVs is extremely high on the long run.. No thanks, I'll pass. I don't want to add to the problem.!

Even though it looks good on paper, reliability won't be good. In fact if the battery does fail, it will be very difficult and expensive to repair.
