Katy gave Checo A* but let's not forget that he didn't have a perfect weekend overall. Part of the reason he was behind Russell was because he qualified 5th with 2 runs in Q3 which is just bad considering the other car qualified 2nd with just the first run in Q3.

Idk I think team orders so early on in the season when both drivers are still in the mix is kind of weird. In 2021 it made sense for bottas and checo who were 200 points behind hamilton and verstappen to give way for their teammates but when both drivers are still in it its weird to just tell one of them to give it up, even if he is the so called "number 2 driver"

Somehow I feel Sainz didn't have as bad of a season as it seems. In the two DNF's, one of them wasn't his fault. In the most recent race, he did had a spin going into gravel but so did Max with the gust of wind upsetting the car. Still including that, he has made 2 big errors, which agreed when you are fighting for constructors, this isn't acceptable, but still his season hasn't been abysmal. He still got podiums in all the races he finished apart from Spain. He just needs to have a few clean races like Miami.

"Mercedes are back".... no. They finally became quicker because of the updates, thats good. But they are still a lot slower than Redbull and Ferrari. People need to start putting things in context. Binotto: “[In qualifying] they were seven tenths off the pace in the quali lap, which is still a short circuit. [In the race] they finished 30 seconds or more from the Red Bull, and it could have been maybe 40 seconds to Charles [Leclerc]. “Forty seconds, 66 laps, is still six, seven tenths per lap. Six tenths, seven tenths a lap is still significant. It's like Ferrari last year." Totally true!

@@Muhammad-gw8oy in Spain Russel started p4 in Miami he never got even into q3. In Miami Merc were nowhere near Ferrari and RB. In Spain Max couldn't get past George and the GOAT easily breezed past Carlos before being told to slow down after falling behind to p19 at the beginning of the race. RB didn't allow Checo to defend against Max in Spain while he was in a battle with Charles the entire race in Miami. There was no safety car in Spain that helped out George strategy in Spain unlike in Miami. You can't just copy paste times and compare the difference without looking at circumstances. Toto also said Lewis would be battling for a win with Max and Charles had he not been taken hit by the Haas.

Sainz is too eager to prove himself, and I think We all know that he thinks he is better than Charles, so his main goal is to beat Charles and prove he is the best, this lead him to make crucial mistakes. In italy Ferrari planned for glorious day, they even didn't risk and used new engine. Sainz tried to prove himself to tifosis , So made many bad mistakes and ruined Ferrari plan. In spain, his hometown, he wanted to have a great day so he has very bad start and then span. he can not tolerate pressure.

Exactly... the difference between the best and the ones that languish in second seem to be concerned with where they think they should be and what result they want to get vs just kicking ass and racing perfect laps / perfect races. Unfortunate about the tail wind spin, and I'm glad Verstappen had it too because everyone was too fast to jump on the Sainz criticism, but the fact remains that his head is not in the race/lap/sector at hand, and it makes them vulnerable to getting their head out of the game once they try not to lose or spin instead of finding the edge and focusing on point.

I feel like people keep forgetting Max was on ALOT flesher tires. Even without DRS im pretty sure he would pass Perez on the long straight because Max' exit out of the last corner would be much better on newer tires. Theres no reason to hold eachother and risk losing a 1.2 for the team. Keep in mind that Russel was still in play and could potentially get back to p1 on fresh tires if Max and Perez were holding eachother off for too long. Im prettt sure Perez knows this by now and isnt mad or anything. The team knows the data at the time and knows that its important to get Max through quickly to secure a 1.2 for the team. I still hope Perez will get a chance for a win soon tho. He drives amazing this season.

Yeah, honestly the saving grace in my view that makes me want to stay patient with him is the confidence factor. He's had a huge knock to his confidence, and that psychological factor can play a massive role in your performance as a driver. In my opinion the demonstrator of that is the lack of consistency, which is something he used to be known for at McLaren. I want to see him get that back so he can really show what he can do. Still though, this year really is his last chance to prove he has the ability to be on the same level as the front runners.

I agree with this and switching them since max is overall more likely to have more points but I think the problem was with giving checko 3 team orders in one race…. I think the main problem is that when Checko had younger tires and came up behind Max trying to overtake George (with faulty drs) the team didn’t allow a switch between the two drivers to let checko overtake George (which he would’ve done easily with fresher tires, a quicker car and drs working) rather than holding checko up and letting max have several unsuccessful attempts at overtaking George. Whereas when checko earlier in the race was behind another driver the team gave him one lap to overtake than ordered him to switch with max. Do you not see the problem there? Checko was given one chance then told to move out of the way. Then when he was quicker per lap than max the team continually allowed max to make unsuccessful attempts rather than switching. I think the final switch at the end half of the race was just the last straw that checko had had enough of team orders (3 in one race…)

There really was never any question that Max is Red Bull's number one, and I think David Coulthard expressed the situation perfectly... Checo's decision is basically "Do you want to be in Formula 1?", because there really isn't anywhere else for him to go right now. With that said, he was on a suboptimal strategy but still put his car at the front of the pack on merit. And whilst he needs to find a way to be okay with what his position in the team really is, I would hope that if the driver's and constructor's championships are wrapped up before the end of the season, they take his reigns of and let the pair of them have at it. I have no doubt that Max is fine with Checo being told to step aside. But they're both racers; and I have to believe that if you take away the need to protect points hauls for the championships (ie they're both decided), Max would want to race Checo properly because it is so much more rewarding than being waved through.

Checo would easily find another team. He could replace Riccardo at McLaren or Zhou in Alfa Romeo or maybe Sainz in a Ferrari. Don’t forget Checo was already in McLaren and he was an Ferrari Academy driver. Red Bull should be happy to have him if you see how bad Gasly and Albon did. We know all very well why Riccardo left Red Bull because of the preference for Max. Don’t forget that Max get the Updates first and than Checo gets them. If he had the same Updates he would be easily faster.

@@peter4223 whatever you say, where were all those teams when Red Bull gave him that lifeline contract? Ricardo is currently under contract until the end of 2023, Sainz until the end of 2024, why would McLaren or Ferrari go to the expense of buying out those contacts (and the likely eye watering penalties that are involved) just to get Checo? Zhou is probably only contacted until the end of 2022, but with Shanghai contacted until at least 2025, plus the finances behind Zhou, there isn't really a good reason for Alfa to want Checo in that seat instead. @erin6379
@erin6379 2 жыл бұрын

Everybody seems to be suggesting that Red Bull put Checo on the worse strategy on purpose, but they seem to forget that Max was on a 2 stop strategy as well because the seriously thought it would be the fastest. It wasn't until he got stuck behind Russell with his DRS problem that they switched him to a 3 stop strategy. And in all fairness, the 2 stop strategy could work if managed properly. Not counting his lap 1 tire change Hamilton made it work by looking after his tires and going long. Without the issues in the final laps he would have had the fastest race time of anyone. So yeah, it makes sense for RB to as Checo to be patient and look after his tires after that first pitstop.

Checo shouldn't have been significantly slower then? It's not like they held him up, Max just made up a huge gap in a couple laps. Letting them fight would have achieved nothing but Max winning anyways, AND depriving Checo of the extra point he got from being able to pit for fastest lap. You could definitely argue they should have gotten max into the pits sooner behind george, but there is not a single logical reason anyone can give for them not swapping when they had that many laps left. @@scotthenderson1218 Yeah exactly, one out of 2 years (2016, 2018) the Mercedes had basically no chance of winning at Monaco was one where he did win with a lot of luck. 2017 Bottas had a good shot at pole. Barely missed out by less than a 0.05s. Hamilton had trouble finding a clean gap, didn’t even reach Q3. 0.05s to Bottas’ a time Lewis should be able to beat. Same story for 2021, Bottas qualified within 0.03s of the race winner, Hamilton was a full 0.5s away. Likely again trouble finding a good gap. He won Monaco on pure pace once in 8 attempts at Mercedes while Rosberg managed 3 wins in only 4 attempts and didn’t get 4/4 since he sucks in the rain. 2018 Mercedes was nowhere. 2019, they qualified half an insane 0.5s clear of the RB. At Monaco… With a super short laptime… So Hamilton finally got a second win with Mercedes, but he did have a vastly superior car to do it in. I’m just trying to say that Hamilton’s track record at Monaco isn’t as stand out as the first commenter claims it is. I think he lost to Rosberg/Bottas in qualifying and/or races more at that track than any other track. It’s objectively one of his weakest tracks. While Hungary and Silverstone are some of his strongest.

One point about DRS - Whilst Im not a massive fan, I have come to accept and indeed appreciate it. People wanting to get rid (sorry Pete Windsor) are harping back to a past era with "angry old men" energy. BUT - If DRS is too powerful on a weekend, move the DRS ACTIVATION zone 50/whatever yards up the road... if its not powerful enough, bring it closer to detection by 50/whatever yards. DRS then becomes dynamic for all cars and provides a way to fine tune it to get closer to the goldilocks target. You can even do it at half race point...add another variable to confound strategists...

That being said, the car is a disappointment, and seems to keep the same issues as last year, struggling with the slow corners (even worst) and not getting the braking zones and corner entry issues solved, which is surprising to me, as I thought that was why they went with the pull rod. It's important that Daniel keeps his cool, as he always has. That's a big strength of his, and opening the door to frustration is a path with no return. He is the same driver he has always been, as he proved in Monza, during the second half of last season and he is starting this season better than the previous. I'm not very confident of a technical department that doesnt understand their own car (as they have themselves said last year) but at the same time, the car did clearly improve since the first race. Ricciardo is a more experienced car developer and I hope he is being listened to (which I believe he is, hence the pull rod). I dont understand why they got the updates on Norris first, but it's a valid benchmark approach, so whatever works to get the date is fine. These updates will need time to be optimized, so lets wait and see (Monaco will be interesting, predictabily tough for DR, but useful for comparison with last year, keeping in mind that he won one - and a half - races there). To me, the pressure is on the technical department, not on the drivers, but unfortunately that's not how average fans see it, and average fans make a lot of noise. It's the technical department that picked Daniel (I would expect) and that made a car that so far seems not to be working well to either of the drivers (so we're celebrating a P8 now?). I feel that there's a bigger issue here, and its about management and communication, decision making and validation processes. Daniel needs to keep his cool, trust his skills, and stay away from social media. It's a jungle out here, but it's made of uninformed bandwagon people and little kids.

@@JoaoSilva-on4od yeah I said he should show frustration because so many trolls who haven't been paying close attention just take his passive/positive demeanor as acceptance that it's all down to his driving and not other factors.

1:03:08 that's like saying Hamilton no A*, because Russel showed, that in quali the car had more pace. That's why both are equal

Matt you need to get a Ferrari onesie before this weekend, if that won’t break the Monaco curse I dont know what will.

I’d love to DRS only be available for once per 2 laps. With the driver selecting which one. May help with DRS trains too

thats somewhat genuis but at the same time, it would basically make the 2nd to last lap in effect, "the last lap". This would be because if you catch someone on an alt strategy with marginally better pace with 2 laps to go, but no drs until the actual final lap, on tracks like barcelona , you would be held to making a last ditch attempt on the line with drs on the last lap which is highly unlikely.

What RedBull has done by giving team orders just in race number 6 is making it clear to Ferrari that they have clear No1 and No2 at RedBull and fully behind Max for drivers championship. Now Ferrari is in a fix . Should they prioritise LeClerc over Sainz ? Ferrari can easily do that but Mattia has been consistenly saying there is no No1 or No2 at Ferrari and both LeClerc and Sainz are equal. So this is a clear strategy from Redbull to create some internal team dynamics inside Ferrari and history has proven that Ferrari in last 2 decades have always crumbled under pressure and make incorrect strategy decisions.

After they slightly blaimed Magnussen from the incident I had to go to F1 TV and watch the collision from on board cameras of both cars. It was interesting as from Magnussen's view, it does look like hamilton turns into him and therefore hamilton is completely at fault, but when viewed from hamiltons point of view, I cant really see any movement to the left. Both were holding their lines, I can't say neither was really in the wrong position (hamilton was a bit slow into the corner as he got stuck behind another car in the previous corner). As tommy said, that is pretty much textbook racing incident.
