FYI You pressed the wrong button on the cars navigation. If you hit ok, you would have then been navigated to the destination via necessary charge stations.

When making a road trip review, one would think you should know the car first. Just saying. 6 Months and no reply from him is not so good.

You’d generally never wanna go to 100, or even 90, when roadtripping - unless the car is waiting for you to do your stuff of course, which is also really relaxing 😌 Anyway, awesome video, hope you guys do more EV road trips!

My dad has this car. I took it on several long road trips this summer and they were all very enjoyable - more so than the fully loaded 2020 x5 it replaced. It’s quiet, the lack of engine noise is smoothing, the ride is soft and acceleration is effortless. The adaptive cruiser works extremely well. Finding charging was annoying, but once it’s charging, it charges really fast. Most time it’s done charging before we were ready to leave. We have converted all our cars to ev and one phev. Now I avoid taking the phev and only do ev road trips if possible.

Great video. Honest appraisal of road tripping an EV from a regular “car guy”. I think the ionic 5 was an excellent choice because of how it fast charges, smooth ride and quiet cabin. That’s everything you need when on a road trip.

I've had my Ioniq 5 since June. Multiple road trips 500 to 1,200 miles. ABRP, is okay. I use Waze with Electrify America app (free Ioniq 5 charging for several years). Living in SW Florida, many of the chargers where down, due to power outages from Ian. BTW, many of the gas stations where out of gas or 30 minutes to 2 hour wait. During power outage, I used "ChargeHub" application. This app gives user feedback, which helped me to find FPL fast charger 2 miles from work. Also have 11 kW propane generator, which I never needed for EV. Felt like I faired better than ICE drivers. Fast charging of Ioniq 5 is one of the main draws over other EVs

These EV road trip videos goes to show how over blown range anxiety can be. But the worries wouldn't be an issue if chargers were everywhere like gas stations.

Sounds like he isn't a very capable driver. Then he doesn't realize 3.2 miles per kWh is better than 3 and is concerned. It feels like he isn't putting any effort into learning anything.

Well, unless the trip is 50% of the reported 100% charge range, hard acceleration, driving over 65 mph, not using cruise control, passing “slower” vehicles and aiming for 1.5 to 2.0 miles per kilowatt , this is a good way to do that. Otherwise, speed at or below posted limit, on cruise control, and planning on 3.5 to 3.9 miles per kilowatt provides excellent range.

Question: what happens to your mileage is stuck in traffic?
@GOOBENsticks

It would go down over time of course, but much much slower. Imagine using a smart phone to watch a video (driving) and comparing the battery drain to just leaving it on the home screen or scrolling through texts (traffic).

EV Motor uses 0 power and when stopped. 1 hour of an idling ICE causes engine wear like you drove 25 miles.

Well, the Ioniq 5 is a better car than a Model Y... :) I'd rather road trip it, anyway. In fact we have done a 1100+ mile trip in ours. Among a good many other trips plus a planned 1300+ mile trip next month. Model Y isn't bad, and is more powerful and efficient, but the Hyundai is much more comfortable, and 320hp is, you'd say, adequate...

Hybrids still the best bang for the buck. Cost nearly half of a hybrid and will do 600 miles on a tank.
@howardschoenberger3526
@howardschoenberger3526 2 жыл бұрын
The only problem with a hybrid is that while you have the best of both worlds, you also have the worst in you have both sets of drives and the interface system that over time will ultimately cost money to repair. All electric is probably going to cost you a lot less over time. So, while you pay less up front for a hybrid or plugin hybrid it is going to cost you more for the energy and much more for the maintenance.
@martinekstrom6303
@martinekstrom6303 Ай бұрын
The worst of 2 worlds. On a road trip you get a few miles of electric and then pure ICE and you need to drag that battery around giving lousy consumption and performance. You have all the expensive mandatory maintenance of an ICE but also the risk of battery problems. Driving on battery you drag the other driveline around consuming loads of energy.

Well I would definitely miss the flat center console in my M3 and the superb sound system. Ioniq looks lacking there. The driving assist on the Ioniq looks to be better than mine which I never use, even on the highway. Always paying attention to driving assist actually destroys the pleasure of the drive. I hate it! I'm envious of the more comfortable ride. The M3 is fine on decent roads but should've been more compliant. I suspect the firmness is because it's such a fast car.....safety first. I charged to 80% a few days ago at 0.23 per klwt and it's so convenient and easy. My best purchase ever!!!

So damn defeatist. 500 miles is not a road trip. 500 miles would probably only involve 2 charging sessions at most. Your bladder would likely need more stops, at which time you can also charge the car. 🙄😖
