Great review on the forte gt. Great point about how you can have a calm fuel efficient drive to work but on the way home after pop it into sport and you can literally just toss it around and it's so fun when you want it to be, which is hard to find now days.

In July I got my 2023 Forte GT in steel grey. I have a 3 year lease with no money down @$247 a month. Not a single rattle or squeak. Awesome on gas. I average about 34 mpg for my basic city driving and about 40 on the highway. The Forte is packed with great options and a blast to drive for very little money and the peace of mind knowing it’s covered by KIA’s warranty for the duration of the lease, plus free oil changes and car washes. 👍🏻

This is a really cool offering in this segment tbh. Definitely my aesthetic preference to the corresponding Elantra. And it kinda has a similar sort of off-the-beaten-path appeal that the Stinger GT does. While you could argue the Si/GTI are enthusiast choices just by virtue of having been around so long and earning their “car guy street cred,” I’d say this is an enthusiast choice in the sense that to go for one of these shows you’re an intelligent buyer who doesn’t care about pedigree or stigma or brand image and just wants a different, yet still great option with great dynamics and a lot of value. If the Mazda4 didn’t exist for some reason, I woulda looked hard at one of these.

@@buildmorefarms1007 Got ya. Well I think I’d still take the Forte over the Elants N-Line. Just more options on it and the Forte is faster, too. N-Line is not a bad choice either way, enjoy it. I’m currently swapping from a Kia Stinger to a Hyundai. I originally had my eyes on an Elantra N, but decided family matters more than fun so decided to go with the AWD for winters. The utility of having the truck bed will help with lots as well. 👌🏼

I’m bout to buy one, and from what I know the powertrain and transmission are reliable and when I test drove it it was pretty quick even tho I casually drove it and the steering felt smooth and direct, and like a driver focused car. For all that car and features, you can’t beat it for the price. The Japanese segments are much lower speed wise, so I’d definitely consider

Great commentary as usual. This car is classic Kia. Simple and functional interior with lots of features, great pricing, and fun to drive with personality. Definitely a value choice over the GLI. Versus the Civic SI, that’s a tough one. The Civic does look better and more mature. And looks wise, this definitely over the Elantra N line.

Ultimately this is a compromise vehicle. And.... absolutely _nothing_ wrong with that. You get the practicality of a true compact 4-door sedan. Security of a locking trunk. Easily accessed interior. More internal space for hauling stuff, if you need it. Easy to park, easy to drive down older (narrower) city streets. Again, a true compact. Not that nonsense that other automakers have been pulling lately. Making their older compact cars longer and wider. Then having the audacity to label them as still being "compact." Current model VW Jetta as a perfect example. (Why is that traditional compact car as big as my Mid-size Mazda 6 sSport V6 model?) With the KIA you also get real performance. 0-60mph in 6.7 seconds. That's competitive. To put that in perspective, a current generation Mini Cooper S can do that too. But it'll set you back over $36,000. If you get the KIA Forte GT without the GT2 package, we're talking right at $26,000. Same level of performance for $10,000 Less! (If you can live without a sun-roof, the GT2 package really isn't worth it. You do get a lot for that extra $2,000. But nothing that actually contributes to either the GT's performance or practicality.) Performance, Value, Practicality, and Style. That's what you're getting.

i'm not the American looking for an SUV heh! i agree this vehicle is a GREAT value, and i think it would be a bast to drive. the issue at large is that i'm now closer to 30 than 20, and i'm looking to purchase a vehicle that i'd enjoy driving for 10 years. i'm 26, and i think i'd enjoy this car for a few years, but when i'm 36 i think i'd want more space, and a little bit more elegance which is why i'm more interested in the K5 GT line AWD, and mazda3 hatchback. they're great fun cars, but a little bit more mature, sleek, and comfortable to ride in.

The engine in the Forte GT isn't an older engine. Its the same engine they put in the Seltos, the K5, and the Hyundai products. What is older, is the platform. I have to admit that I didn’t even look at this (bought an Si)…..I would have gotten a manual. Causes me to wonder if the quality of the shifter is good or bad. It would also be interesting to see how this Kia compares in regard to quail of materials and handling and reliability/resale. The absence of an LSD likely means that it doesn’t do nearly the job the Honda does in managing the torque being deployed through the front wheels I think that’s the nuance that’s missing in this review if you’re gonna invoke other cars. Paying more money upfront, but getting better quality, refinement and reliability/resale - while losing some options I don’t particularly care about seems like the right move, but I think the forte GT sounds like a good challenger. I’d argue with the comment about pedigree in regard to the Honda. Yes, people have positive expectations associated with an si but it’s not simply reputation without substance. They’ve been around for a long time and they have consistently built high quality, fun, reliable cars. The Korean carmakers have struggled at times in their early history of offering cars in this segment and that seems to have been overlooked in favor of reviewing a stat sheet and an MSRP Ironic for. Cayman S owner. I have a boxster s too……paid a fair bit more for that than the brz I just sold. Was the brz a better car (much as I loved it) than the boxster because it had heated seats and my Porsche didn’t?

this is what I am wondering....maybe help me understand...?? first of all, both the GT and Si are underrated, right? the 1.6t has been dyno'd at 195-200 WHEEL torque and , the Forte especifically, at 185 WHEEL hp... For the Si is somewhere along there as well with 220 crank hp or so... So far it looks like the 2022 Si is doing 0-60 in 7 sec AT BEST, there's a few videos on youtube with the owners using dragy to measure 0-60 and 1/4 mile. Results: mid to low 7 secs, 1/4 mile in the mid/low 15's @95 - 96 mph. Forte GT '20-'22 is managing 6.35-6.65 sec 0-60 w/ the DCT and 6.7 sec with the MT, and 1/4 mile in the 14.7-14.9 sec @ 95-96 mph. Keeping in mind the whole "but the GT doesn't have an LSD!" argument.... Now, okay, that is STRAIGHT LINE performance, not the Si's FORTE or PURPOSE, right? lol It looks like the '22 Si is not pulling any better g's than the previous gen, in fact, it has worsen at .93-.94 vs the Forte GT at .93g with the MT and the summer tires.,,Now, I am sure that at the track the LSD will feel much better and likely result in a lower time than the GT...but here's the thing.....I've come across SOOO many Si owners that seem to prefer/favor straight line performance and beating mustangs and camaros than talking about lap times....that is true as well in the forums, 1/4 miles times 0-60 talks over lap times.... What I like about the Forte is the DCT / automatic option rather than just MT or in a non SI civic a damn CVT.... If TODAY both were in the 26-27k AND youre looking for a MT id just say go for the Si....But here's another thing, in my area at least, most sales on the Si are in the 31-32k USD....whereas with the Forte GT most sales were in the in 26-27k USD ....MT vs MT, that is... and w/ the DCT + GT2 most sales range in the 26.5-29k instead. Now, these are CRAZY times in the car prices segment and we can no longer argue the "for 32k id rather buy **instert name of car here**" bc THAT car is likely going to be more expensive. For example, a '22 GTI, in my area 35-36k...ufffffff...but a '22 GLI MT is also going for 32-33k...me, personally, for over 30k, id get the GLIs 2.0t....but that's just me, as I have no brand loyalty. "Paying more money upfront, but getting better quality, refinement and reliability/resale" it is still a Civic in my book, and that is true for most ppl on the road. I don't thinkg "oh lala there goes a Civic"...lol.. I value MORE a performance for money than "oh this feels nice to the touch and looks so high end"....but that is a subjective measure.... Perhaps the only good point would be resale value. However, ultimately, both are depreciating assets and from the get go one is a little less costly to start with.

@@M4B21S88 you make fair points. Drive cars vs relying on the spec sheet or reviewers. I have 2,136 miles on the odo as I write this. The Si is quick enough for my needs and handles really well. I’m coming out of owning two rwd cars (now one + the Si)…..torque steer is a big turnoff for me so the LSD (or lack thereof) is not a small thing to add into the decision. Also - I just don’t like automatic transmissions. Don’t care that they are quicker. They are less fun (to me at least), period. The quality thing isn’t necessarily a primary consideration for me (drove a brz - remember - not a ton of quality materials inside …. Though the seats and wheel were good)…..but when you’re down to plus/minus a couple grand and the performance envelope is similar…..choose the one you like better. I’d be willing to bet that the forte shifter is mediocre…..the Si is sublime……big big deal for me. Forget resale for a minute……I sleep more soundly owning a Honda vs a Kia……no guarantee that a car is free from trouble but I like my chances better w the Honda (both in terms of likelihood of avoiding problems and a brand that will own the problems more consistently…..a more robust warranty is often a bandaid against the reputation that the vehicle won’t stay together as consistently) You may have misunderstood me…..people aren’t impressed when they see a civic…..but when it’s time to sell it, they’ll pay a larger % of purchase price than with the Kia. Wouldn’t you agree? I - like you - don’t have brand loyalty as much as preference …..my cars in the last several years included: Porsche, Honda (3), bmw (6), Mazda(4), ford, vw (2),triumph, Chevy (2), Acura, Subaru (3) Bmw is the one I’d gone to most and probably won’t again. Likely won’t buy American anytime soon - although they’re much better than when I was young and stupid and bought two Chevy cars. Performance isn’t only about numbers it’s about driving dynamics…..I’ve driven a v8 mustang and it’s got tons of power and a certain visceral appeal but it isn’t fun and I’d not own one. Small, nimble, good handling/steering/chassis and a motor with character is what compels me. I think VW is uninteresting because it’s trying to do too much and can’t get the fun flingable character right anymore (the things it was known for when the gti and scirocco came onto the scene. Fwiw, I also far prefer the brz to the wrx - even though the performance envelope of the latter is larger. Brz - even with the torque dip of the 1st gen - is tons more fun. But to each his own

@@stms4411 The Si would be a great option at still 24-26k like they ONCE were (27k at MOST)..any more than that and, in MY humble opinion, it is just not worth it anymore. In my book a Civic (Si or not) is just a Civic and paying 32k for it is just not reasonable in terms of performance for the money. At that price point, it competes with the GLI and PERSONALLY id take the GLI at 33k or even 34k(for the DSG) bc of the additional power and an LSD, perhaps not as nimble and agile as the Si... but I guess that's where personal preferences come in. For 32k, id not feel good paying for a 1.5t making only ~220 hp (that at this point in time after being in the US market for 25+ yrs?? you'd hope it be able to be faster than what it currently is)...other things to consider is location, I guess. Some ppl might not have acces to twisty roads and mountains.... Now, since you brought up RWD, I believe only RWD or AWD are true drag cars, FWD cars no. However, intersting to note how HERE on youtube some channels BLOW UP bc they show drag races that include FWD cars,...going back to forums and the chatter about performance (across almost all sporty cars) , it appears a lot more ppl value straight line "wins" than bragging about handling capabilities/driving dynamics. I am not saying there is not a small group of ppl who truly enjoy lap times /driving dynamics but they appear to be a minority nowadays... I think the 1.5t had dilution issues? there was a recall for paint being too thin? some clutch issues? I am not here to argue which brand is more reliable my point is: shit happens and those that have issues will more likely get on the internet to complain unlike those who don't have issues...the 1.6t is pretty solid. I have a '12 IS 350 (still own) and now a 2021 Forte GT2 (replaced my '16 EB mustang)....my fun commuter. Got 24k miles no issues, bought it before the price craze at 24.5k (26,3k msrp).

@@M4B21S88 avg price of a new car is 46k - 28k for a civic is plenty of value. Markup is a function of demand…..the competitors that don’t command markup are showing you their relative desirability. I could have bought a vw but have no interest in them, for reasons I’d mentioned before. Drag racing?!! Not my priority in any way. Who cares. Honda has had some issues - all manufacturers do. Who has less/more? I won’t argue about the overall probability that a Honda will be more reliable than a Kia or VW - mainly because there’s no argument needed. The fact that you have no problems is good for you. We’re talking propensity to avoid problems and that’s a part of my buying decision process. I accept risk (eg 3 year old bmw) if it delivers me incrementally more fun.

@@M4B21S88 additionally - the Si was 25k 2 years ago…..they didn’t have a 2021 model and in high inflationary times they took away heated seats, adjustable dampers and driving lights and made material upgrades to: the engine mapping, steering, chassis, brakes and shifter - and they added an lsd. They made it a better driving car……not measured by a stopwatch but by real world experience…..it that priority on useable driving dynamics over optics and/or creature comforts don’t appeal to a buyer…..fine, the market finds it attractive. For perspective, they increased in price at a rate of 5% per year for the 2 years since the 10th gen was last offered. Seems fair to me
