Even when erased it’s still useless , so no you’re not giving them a brand new phone, it has a activation lock , so they can’t do anything unless they know your Apple ID and password. I would rather have my phone erased just in case.

I have lost my iPhone 11pro three times since I bought it, lost on the street, lost in a Dept store, lost on the subway, and luckily everyone Returned my phone, I was very grateful, they all were able to answer my ringing lost phone. In the past three years, I have also found approx 5 lost phones, I was able to return 4 to the right owners except 1 because a car ran over it and remained on the black screen. {Always leave a contact number on the back of your cell ph case } Just In case the phone ever gets lost. That only works if you have others Apple devices. If you ONLY have 1 iPhone…you can’t use this or the website because you don’t have access to your phone number anymore. You have to request Apple to CHANGE your number first, and then try to track it. This process can take over a week.

if you’re sure you won’t get it back, you can use the “erase this device” option. that option erases all data from the phone and makes it impossible to unlock the phone again without your icloud login

no, unless you remotely delete your data iphone through your icloud account it will wipe everything but again marking it as stolen/lost will not wipe any data, and yes only the lost device will be wiped your other device are safe.

I do security work and found a Iphone 11 about 6 months ago we did let it charge for two weeks but still no one has come for it so I am guessing it's owner has none of this turned on? Does this mean the iPhone has been erased or will I receive another confirmation email from Apple about this?
