Dan, I really admire this super sensible, super efficient (75 miles per Imperial gallon) Corolla but still have two major issues with Toyota. I share vertical dimensions with you but with all my height in the torso, I literally cannot fit inside this generation of Corolla sedan or hatch. In contrast, my old Matrix clone (Vibe) leaves me with at least two inches of spare headroom. Speaking of that very popular Matrix, why won't Toyota sell us the supremely sensible Corolla wagon that keeps all the virtues of this sedan but adds so much more practicality? Heck, they even sell an AWD Hybrid Corolla wagon in Japan that comes from the same factory as this sedan. Regular gas is nearly a buck fifty a litre these days, if car shoppers aren't 'hyped' about the incredible fuel efficiency and proven reliability Toyota Hybrids offer now, they never will be.
@danilika94203 жыл бұрын
I’m right there with you! The Corolla wagon is slick (though it doesn’t help in the headroom department), and Subaru has long built a similarly sized wagon that would seemingly be perfect for the Canadian market. Alas, consumers just don’t seem all that interested, while automakers would rather bring in more profitable crossovers (the Corolla Cross, for instance). Sadly, it would seem the days of the wagon are done in this part of the world.
@rightlanehog31513 жыл бұрын
@@danilika9420 With the sole exception of the larger Outback, the days of affordable wagon availability are in suspension but you can certainly buy a luxury station wagon if you have the $$$$$$. In regard to the Subaru Levorg, if anyone can still sell a wagon it is Subaru and the Levorg would be a worthwhile upgrade to the Impreza hatch. When the new Corolla Cross Hybrid arrives it will represent something close to a modern Matrix with improved mpg but its CUV shape will never be able to cut through the air like that sleeker Corolla wagon.
@danilika94203 жыл бұрын
@@rightlanehog3151 I have it on good authority that there were talks of bringing the Levorg to Canada when it first went into production, but without any U.S. interest in doing the same it was impossible to build a business case for it.
@rightlanehog31513 жыл бұрын
@@danilika9420 That's a fair point. Even with 98% overlap, we do occasionally get models in Canada that don't go on sale Stateside. The C-Class wagon, Chevy Orlando and second generation Kia Rondo come immediately to mind. In the case of Toyota Motor Corporation, we had the extra model year of Matrix, Venza and Prius v as a gesture to our different tastes so there lingers a frustrating hint of a possibility automakers might treat us like an independent country some day.
@danilika94203 жыл бұрын
@@rightlanehog3151 For the most part, these are financial decisions. In the case of the trio of Toyotas you mentioned, since the regulatory work had already been done, the additional costs were minimal. In the case of the Levorg, all the costs associated with regulatory approvals - safety and emissions, mostly - would have been up to Subaru Canada alone. With the C-Class, it’s easier, since it’s a variant. We also had the Nissan Micra for a time, which wasn’t offered in the U.S., so that would’ve been on Nissan Canada to take care of everything.

I love having lane trace and adaptive cruise control, but he's totally right that it's not AI, and you need to learn its quirks to enjoy it properly. One thing that REALLY annoys me is when the car in front of you turns right (say at a green traffic light), your adaptive cruise control will still act like something is there for much longer than it should and apply the brakes inappropriately.

What's crazy is Volkswagen developed those concept XL1 decades ago that could travel 100km on 1-2 litres of fuel but they never went into mass production due to greed and cost of producing those things. Its credible we're able to achieve those numbers today with a car that cost around 30k. Toyota's legendary brand when it comes to hybrid tech.

Great review! I can't believe that you are the first reviewer to mention the tiny button for the hvac, i saw it in the first 5 minutes and yet nobody mention this! Imagine older people driving and trying to find the right button to clear the windshield fog! This car is a nightmare on many front as for ease of use: the backseat fold but the release system is in the middle of the car(instead of close to the door), the backseat headrest are fixed, blocking view for no good reason, the location of usb port and seat heater....the ergonomy team on this one missed a couple of meeting...The rest of the car seems real good but these thing would irritate me on a daily basis....

@@beestorm7609 Thanks for your response. I can't believe that range lol! It seems that this car out performs most up to the 22 year. The mpgs drop in later models. Roughly how many kilometers per tank are you able to reach in winter driving? I drive a 2013 prius and it takes a big hit in the winter. Are you able to reach anywhere near 700 kms per tank in winter driving? 10 mile drop off a year is quite significant no?

My recommendation is to go drive both and see which you prefer! There are going to be aspects of each that I like but you may not, so it's important that you get a feel for them and see how they work for you. If it were my money, I'd probably stick with the Corolla. Cheers!
